Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way.

Hats off to beautiful MP and her father for tackling the electrical. Its not easy and requires alot of concentration. Father and daughter working together...priceless.
MP is now the official ships engineer. She has taken on so many different tasks and learned so much. i am proud of her and am sure all her new skill sets will make for worry free cruising when out in the middle of nowhere... anything that goes wrong... MP can repair it!!!!! Cheers 🙂
The issue about the lug screws is that the constant varying of the load on the chainplates will create a fretting and possibly loosen the fixing, a through bolt is much more secure and can accept that fretting without even getting loose. The lug bolts/through bars are all in shear so that any loosening of the fixing will translate to a fretting of the chainplate on the bolts that will eventually wear through.

I'm typing this on my wife's phone. I've been building wooden boats and teaching wooden boatbuilding for over 45 years and I just love watching your project. Watching the two of you become boat carpenters, riggers, mechanics, metal workers, and electrical engineers, has been a joyfull experience. Your chain plates will be OK but keep an eye on them over the years as they can back out. You need to replace the bolts on the anchor roller with flat heads as those proud bolt heads will damage your chain and be beat to crap themselves. Best to you guys!

Ben you need to put carriage bolts on the anchor thing the chain will automatically grind off those bolt head's. Have a good afternoon.
He did put 4 x lag bolts or carriage bolts as you call them, plus two all thread rods with locknuts at each end.
BTW: the chain won't rub significantly on the bolt heads as the line between the front roller and the gypsy is high above the chain guide and as the chain will be tight most of the time it won't touch the bolts.
@sailingsjofagel in time yes it will. And the carriage bolt head is rounded on the top and flater so the chain can travel over it without catching.
It would be great to see a side by side picture of Yaba when she was first hauled up and when she's just about to splash. 😊

I agree with the comment about the destroyed nuts if the chain is running on the metal - it would be better to use countersunk heads or even rounded. Great channel !

A hole in the water lined with wood, metal, glass fibre etc. into which you pour money.
Your spreaders are a good place for antennas and a radar if you ever put one on. They are also a great place to put a couple of flood lights shinning down at the decks, very handy for dark nights and deck parties. Yaba is looking better every day. The daily videos have been great, I can't believe you manage to get them edited and published every day. Keep up the good work.

Something to remember when mixing low voltage wiring and high voltage AC: You can cross over high voltage with low volt but do not run parallel with or next to it. High voltage will induce electromagnetic Flux in the low voltage wiring and can cause a charge in the 24 volt lines as well as frequency Interference in radio and control sytems.

Willeke and I feel very happy for the 2 of yours that the total refit of Yabá is going so progressively and all looks so nice that we think this beautiful schooner will be a very reliable ship and a pleasure in sailing. Like you both we hardly can’t wait for Yabá’s launching although we realize that there still needs to be done quite a lot of details before launching can take place. We keep our fingers crossed you’ll be ready before the shipyard will be full with other ships.

I'm not a structural engineer But Ben I would not worry about the chainplates you've done a great job those massive lag bolts grabbing that much wood will definitely hold up that mast . MP you and your fathers attention to detail on the electrical system is very impressive . Every piece of Yaba is coming together the rebuild has been epic Hats off to the whole crew !

Ben, the boat looks great. you and MP have been doing an excellent job. I highly recommend that you run the bolts all the way through the hull and bolt them with a backing plate. Worst case scenario si in high weather the lag bolts can pull out, through bolts cannot. Safety first for the safety of you and MP and crew. Better safe than sorry.

Looking through the comments, I see a lot od the nay sayers are back with their negative comments about the rebuild.
It is obvious that they don't realize that these types of vessels are often out in the Atlantic with conditions similar to the Southern Ocean.
But with the shipwrights that have been involved in the rebuild this vessel will handle most conditions, but I can see you two spending a lot of time coastal sailing and not venturing too far off shore.
But so far so good.
As to the number of thru-hull fittings that you have. That is a reasonable number for the size and use you will be using Yaba for.
MP, you have done an excellent electrical refit under the guidance of your father.

I think the lug screws will be ok. I typically don’t like them because they can strip out, but the load on the chain plates/shrouds will be ninety degrees, so it should work. Plus after launching the hull will swell a little. You will want to check them periodically to make sure they’re still tight. Good work. You could add some thick acrylic pieces on the anchor support to protect those bolt heads from the anchor chain.

Hi Ben IMPORTANT!!! please consider the weight and scouring that the anchor chain is going to put on those bolt heads in chain guard section, that chain is going to destroy the bolt heads and those 2 x nyloc nuts...really hope you read this....
They don't reply to any thing of importance very concerned for their safety once back in the water
Perhaps not ideal but the could put several axles across the channel with rollers on them? An add on rather than re engineer the mount. As an alternative they could add a slider plate above the mounting nuts
@@markshepherd3195agreed. I can already see the coast guard picking them up in the middle of the ocean. The rebuild has too many safety issues and not up to marine standards. They are better off using the sailboat as a museum on a rack.
They should have also added pressure washers under the bolt heads…
Some durable plastic like PDE would make a great liner for the chain way. Your issue will present itself in time and will become one of the many things to repair.

Please look into getting a victron battery balancer. You need one of these because your battery bank is series in parallel. @@SailingYaba

No doubt when you bought the boat and found it needed a huge amount of work it must have made you both very stressed and quite upset. As they say, every cloud has a silver lining and the silver lining here is that you now know Yabå has been rebuilt/repaired to a very high standard and between you both, you will know all the systems inside out. Kudos, for doing an amazing job producing all these daily videos and the many others along the way. Now I’m sure I hear the sea calling.

I watch and try to support several boat building videos. The trouble I find is the size of the T shirts. The problem for us lounge chair or ex sailors is that we have expanded around the waist. 4x and 5x t shirts would aid us in supporting you.

So many ppl bashing. This boat has been around decades already and been just fine. Settle down arm chair boat builders. Ben has stated already that the mast system doesn’t even require chain plates, so i doubt these are gonna fail, it is extra!!

If you have any concerns about the naysayer and the chain guide, just ask those professionals in the boat yard but I’m sure it will be fine. The front roller on the guide brings the chain up and over and will keep the chain between that point and the winless up in the air. Meaning it won’t touch those bolt heads. As I mentioned to him, you have a lot of good experts around you helping with that boat, and they don’t wanna see the reputation damaged by creating a dangerous situation for you, because they’ll lose business from all those commercial boats who won’t want to risk losing their ship while they’re out trying to make a living.
I think you need the counter-plates on each of the chain-plates not just because of the thickness and length of the bolts but because of the tork that the rigging with be putting on them under sail. Over time the pressure of pulling and flogging under sail could create a weak point (Point of Failure). Counter-plates would spread the load on each of the bolts
You can always add a 24v alternator to your diesel engine. We have a converted 1960 passenger bus converted to an RV… It’s equipped with a 12 and 24v alternator. All the internal bus electrics are 24 volt, (starter, heater fans and such), signals and headlights all 12.
We have it as well ☺️ but why not use everything, right?
