    💙 Who are we?
    We are Ben and MP!
    Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the work needed was much more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way.

    When you clamp cables you always put the saddle of the clamp on the load side and the hoop on the dead end. Always remember " NEVER SADDLE A DEAD HORSE'.

      I'm glad someone else realized the cable clamps were wrong . Never saddle a dead horse . Once you know it you never forget it.

    Looking good. I did notice you put the cable clamps on wrong. Never saddle a dead horse. Put the round end on the dead side and the saddle on the live end.
    Can’t wait to see you in full sail. Keep up the good work.

      Saddle type clamps can go either way around but good practice to alternate directions.The shackle type clamps have to go as you say so that as load comes on the movement of the wire doesn't unscrew the pin.

    The green trim on the sails is a sacrificial UV protection strip. It should be on the outside of the sail when furled. You need to roll up the sails in the opposite direction or the sail cloth will be degraded from the sun.

    • @TheBeaker59
      @TheBeaker59 Месяц назад +1

      You are correct in theory, it is hard to tell from the video if you are correct in practise definitely something important to check though.

    • @anthonyelyas2040
      @anthonyelyas2040 Месяц назад +3

      @@TheBeaker59 it was clearly furled opposite from the flashback clips, and on a big screen tv it is clear to me they are incorrect.

    • @mbv_1
      @mbv_1 Месяц назад +3

      I had the same impression. It looks that it's backwards.
      The green stripe is a UV protection for the sail when it's furled ✌️

    • @freddy.hoogstoel
      @freddy.hoogstoel Месяц назад +1

      Not a sailor here, so excuse me if I use incorrect terminology ...
      I also am under the impression that the sails are rolled up the wrong way around ...
      See episode #102 at 00:00:22 : Darker green on the outside and no 'white spot' in the middle ...
      Like your video's ... nice pass-time ... keep on going with your enthousiasm !

    • @Akvav1tix
      @Akvav1tix Месяц назад +2

      I've been fiddling enough with furling sails and UV-protections to confirm that the sails are now in fact rolled the wrong way around. Luckily, its not a big job to correct it; a bit of a hassle though. You just need to roll the furling line the opposite way around.
      Another tip for the front sail (no idea what Yaba's sails' correct names are), furl the furling line into the furling drum prior to hoisting the sail. Makes it a lot easier.

    You folks have learned a lot about rigging and adjusting. But now having a "rigger" stop by to make final adjustments is very helpful. They see stuff you don't see yet.

    • @kenhudson904
      @kenhudson904 Месяц назад +2

      “Tight and Perfect” is not what it means to tune rigging. I would not want to be on Yaba in big seas and a gale.

    I didn’t realize that you didn’t have a boom on the smaller mast , that makes it a staysail schooner ! I was looking at a staysail schooner made by Cabrini yachts it was a 48’ but we didn’t purchase her . Great sailing boats ! Your sail rig should give you a tremendous amount of ability to adjust and set sails , can’t wait to see her with all the sails up and on a beam reach ! 👍🏻👍🏻

    I see that others have mentioned that the sails are furled inside out. Very easy to just unfurl and wrap the drum the other way around.
    When you get around to running your furling lines, note that the #1 cause of furling problems is when the line doesn't enter the drum at 90°.

    I haven't read all of the comments, so excuse me if I am repeating what others have said, but you put the some of the wire rope clamps on backwards. The saddle side (as opposed to the U-bolt side) should always be on the "live" line that is taking the load. As the saying goes, "Never saddle a dead horse". I love your podcast and have been watching since you started redoing Yaba.

    Guys, I think you have furled the sails in the wrong direction, the sun/UV protection is on the other side of the sail. Also, your masts are not in line, at first glance it appears that your aft mast (Main) is leaning to the right compared to the foremast. I suggest a measurement from the hounds down, either side and compare. Cheers

    Congrats on rig progress...but please get a pro rigger to check that cable for age and fatigue. You can also get a Loos gauge to check your cable loas versus breaking strength of cable and use that measure to spread the load equally around the hull. Also if you don't run the halyard to its own cleat but inside the furled sail where you can't access when you need it, especially underway, then one day you are going to be very unhappy! Good rigging reference is by Brion Toss digital edition is easy to get...love your voyage! Peter, Pegasus Voyages Berkeley CA
