I like how pumba accurately guessed what stars are
And Timone just shoots him down "with you, everything's gas"
Nearly all Disney films before late 90s had an evil relative, many times stepmother, and the main character usually had a parent who died during the film or was already dead before the film began.
4:21 Scar expresses a low opinion of Mufasa's intelligence, but here, Mufasa expresses an understanding of ecology that keeps the Pride Lands thriving; an understanding that Scar apparently does not have.
Saw this movie in the theatre with my father when I was 8 back in the summer of '94, 6 months later he was dead. Still hits me hard in the feels every time I rewatch it.
Sorry for your loss man, I’m glad you got to experience the film with him tho. Must really hot close to home I lm sure
I watched this in the theater only a few short years after my dad's death when I was still a small child. It really hits different even to this day.
Probably the best Disney film they've ever made. Timeless.
I think Atlantis is the best animated disney film
@@jw_gojifan19 Treasure Planet is a great film too.
@@FadeintotheShadows
Facts
James Earl Jones was perfect as the voice of Mufasa, same with Jeremy Irons as the voice as Scar
The remake was Pointless! And the new Scar was so lame!!
@@seanstinchfield-mp2xm yep, agreed
@@seanstinchfield-mp2xm That abomination shall be forgotten, the sooner the better.
Everything about this movie is as close to perfection one can get, with a movie like this.
Circle of Life always brings me to tears. There is nothing like the opening of this movie. And of course, Mufasa's death with Simba trying to wake him.
8:49
A parent calling a child with such a voice and their back turned ... you just know you're in BIG trouble.
A father calling a child*
The phrase "Just wait until your father comes home" exists for a reason, men are the enforcers.
"She's so pretty. Like Nala, from The Lion King. And she talks so smart, like... Nala from The Lion King." -Jason Mendoza
The fact that you saw Timone and Pumba show before Lion King and in your head it feeling like a cross over and seeing them as a cameo is the coolest thing. You are the first person I know this happened to. 🫨
I think it's freakin' awesome she seen "Timone and Pumba" first. You'll probably never get a reaction like that for this movie.
I think in Russia they were a little behind on American kids shows lol.
What a weird, desperate, thirsty comment. She literally immediately understood they were originally in this film. She never thought it was some cameo or crossover.
@@leslieyeich1837 nothing weird or desperate about this comment honesty
Poor Dasha. Rafiki had her thinking Mufasa was still alive literally rather than metaphorically. Love your work Dasha. Keep up the great work. I love it.
Rafiki also really made me believe that as a child, until he took Simba to the lagoon
The movie worked perfectly in that regard.
I mean, what does "literally alive" even mean? There certainly still is *something* alive of Mufasa, more than just a metaphore, to create that image in the clouds and talk his Simba into going back. Or it really was just crazy wheather ...
@@lukasr5867 I believe it more like Mufasa's Force Ghost. Mufasa is dead but his spirit still communicates with Simba.
@@corymccarty8603 Agreed. My point is, being a ghost of some kind is still a lot more "alive" than a plain corpse would be. You could even ask how relevant the physical body is to a persons self/soul. So even if the body is dead, as long as the soul is still around and somehow able to manipulate the "living" world, one might have to consider the person to still be alive in a way (similar to how many religions treat their form of afterlife).
Scar's statement "Life's not fair, is it?" reminded me of a saying ... "Expecting the Universe to treat you fairly because you're nice, is like expecting the bull not to charge because you're a vegetarian." 🤔😕🙂
I'm stealing this Dan 😂
I trust Dasha because she cried when Mufasa died.
And also, the voices casting it´s incredible; starting with Mufasa (James Earl Jones, who was the voice of Darth Vader among another epic roles), and Scar (Jeremy Irons).
5:38 "I can't marry her. She's my friend."
Who better to marry?
13:48 ..."This is supposed to be like a childrens movie"... Back then, people tend to treat children like rational human beings that can actually deal with hars themes (not by being explicit, but definitely not by shielding them from that stuff), unlike nowadays, were parents are so goddamn frail that they think their offspring are gonna be traumatized for life just for watching a scene.
Anyway, this is the light stuff, if you want to watch some hardcore traumatizing material in kids movies, try with "An american tail" or "The land before time" (Don Bluth knew how to really put you on the edge)
I assure you, there were parents who refused to let children go to any of those movies because they were too traumatic.
Hunchback of Notre Dame is even darker. It dealt with religion, just & genocide
Don Bluth films really are a whole different breed.
Everyone should watch Lion King. Every grown up & child alike. It’s so good.
It's 1 of those movies that you must see in order to function in modern culture.
Facts mate. Pure facts ^_^
"I'm going to be crying the rest of the movie"
*enter Timone and Pumba*
"The Lion King" has many details in common with "Hamlet", the famous novel by Shakespeare. For me, it´s the best animated film ever, with one of the best OST ever composed (by the great Hans Zimmer). ALWAYS touches my heart in some scenes. It´s a truly masterpiece.
And it have similarities with Bambi, which is why the movie during production was called "Bambi in Africa".
2:05 Mufasa and Sarabi: “(Individually and nonverbally to Simba) I’m *SO* proud of you”
Can we get a slow hand clap for Pumba knowing that stars are big burning balls of gas?
This is the first movie I ever saw in a Theater. I was six years old and Mufasa's death made cry so hard that my older cousin had to escort me out to the restroom 😅 I came back halfway through the Hakuna Matata song.... Such core memories I can't to watch you react to this, Dasha! ❤️ from Texas!
This and "The Land Before Time" 1988 always hit the feels.
Oh man, Land Before Time. Her watching all these old Disney movies, and now you mentioning that. Giving me some serious nostalgia/flashbacks. I honestly cannot remember much of the plot from the first one, but the song the two oviraptors sing in the second one will never leave my brain. When they sing about the eggs.
Bambi...
Dumbo...
Neverending Story.
And, hve you read the "real" versions of the old fairy tales? Limbs removed, blood everywhere, people and animals killed on a whim....😮
Yeah after this one, a nice cartoon like land before time will really cheer up 😁
13:45 Because storytellers used to understand that children need to learn coping skills at an early age. Unlike today's writers (and parents), who think everyone is too sensitive to handle life.
Unfortunately nowadays everyone IS too sensitive to handle life.
yeah, exact, children need to learn coping skills at an early age. I can't believe today's writers think they're too sensitive to handle life.
I mean Infinity War was so sensitive it killed off half the main cast.
Author Astrid Lindgren (Pippi Longstocking, The Brothers Lionheart, Mio, My Son) was good at this. She didn't shy away from tragedy and hardship in her children's stories, and I think both children and adults get more out of them as a result.
@@RX-12 But did it tho
Such a great flick, classic and has a very dark and real story. That's something Disney was very good at doing.
This is my favourite Disney movie ever it's got a fantastic story, fantastic animation, amazing characters, an all time great soundtrack and one of the greatest villains in history just a beautiful film
And they should have left it alone but the Mouse is a hungry bitch lol
"Friends, I thought you said we were the enemy."
And just like almost all of the "live" action remakes (seriously, this was still drawn) it never needed an update
@@OneArmedRetroGamer I agree the live action of this movie should NEVER have been made
The opening dialogue is Mr Bean (Rowan Atkinson) with Jeremy Irons (one of the greatest Shakespeare actors on the planet)..that is in itself INSANE. Also watch the next parts..they are brilliant as well
Ironic that Jeremy Irons is a Shakespeare actor when this movie is based on of Shakespeare's plays.
@@passionsquietrage they got lucky his mother didn’t marry his uncle aye ;)
@@ravensdark99 I think Scar says something about her being his queen or something like that
Remember Ferris Bueller? He's the voice of grown Simba! And, of course, Darth Vader is the voice of daddy Mufasa!
And Mr Bean/Johnny English is the voice of Zazu!
by far the best movie version of hamlet
Wow, The Lion King, this is going to be a fun watch.
It doesn't matter how many times I've seen this movie, the scene where Simba finds Mufasa dead in the gorge always gets me in the heart. Especially the fact that Scar gaslights Simba into thinking it was his (Simba's) fault.
Also, I am very glad they cast James Earl Jones as Mufasa. As much as I respect the actor, they almost cast Christopher Walken.
Side note: Some of the character's names have meanings translated out of Swahili
Simba: Lion
Nala: Gift
Mufasa: King
Sarabi: Mirage
Taka (Scar's birthname): Waste
Rafiki: Friend
Timon (actually Greek, since there's no Swahili translation): He who respects
Pumbaa: Slow-Witted
Zazu: Movement
Shenzi: Savage
Bonsai: Skulk or lurk

So does that mean Scar is the Neimian Lion?
@@benschultz1784 In the Hercules universe, at least.
Saw this movie as a kid back then😃 This was the peak of Disney Renaissance era
Timon and Pumba make a great duo! Im surprised you didnt know they originally were in this movie! Where did you see them first? Uncle Scar was devious but I iliked his character! Jeremy Irons gave him great presence! The Hyena's were great comedic relief and well done by Whoopi and Cheech Marin! Thanks for sharing Dasha ❤️💛
As a martial arts lover I did chuckle when I first saw Rafiki doing his martial arts on those hyenas! 😄
Opening Intro:
Dasha: "I don't know many children..."
^with her personality, she strikes me as someone who would be very good with children, but is at the age where she's just not around many yet.
Seriously. Imagine "That's The One" ... when you're in your 30's, 50's, 90's ... ... "Ms Dasha is the reason I loved learning"
She should enjoy the time with herself. Later when she is around children/has them sometimes she will miss those days. It is after all a circle of life.
She should do what she wants, oeheaven, not what you think is best for her. Maybe it is later in life, or maybe it is soon. That's up to her, not for others to tell her what is best for her. Many people choose to wait until much later these days, and many regret making the decision to wait. There are a lot of interesting surveys on the happiness of people who have a family while young and of those who do not.
My point is that no one here has any right to tell her what she SHOULD do. Her life is up to her, and I am sure that whatever she decides it will be something she thought about a lot and came to a decision that works best for her.
15:34 Your joy when realizing this has made all of America fall in love with you.
I don't think I've ever seen someone who had seen Timon and Pumbaa, but not The Lion King! Such a unique reaction to them! The older I get, the more I appreciate the duo. They are much-needed comic relief after the tragedy of Mufasa's death and Simba's exile, and they provided Simba with a safe place to grow up after the trauma he endured. They were pretty much his parents for most of his life. Then, they willingly leave their idyllic home to help their friend/son fight for his home.
I hope you check out more of the classic animated movies. Any of the 2D Disney films from Snow White to The Princess and the Frog are winners. I'd also recommend anything by Studio Ghibli. Another trio of movies to check out, if you're interested in Irish folklore, are The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, and Wolfwalkers by Tomm Moore.
Yeah, I also think so. I always continue appreciating this fantastic duo more, and I love the relationship they have with Simba, him being both a friend/adopted son to them, they were really needed after Mufasa's death and to take care of Simba during his exile, their cheerful energy really carried somewhat the movie, and also I admire them for leaving their paradise "no worries" to help Simba fight for his home ;it's incredible that she watched their serie before the movie (it took me a while to discover that they had their own series
You get baby fever when you watch this movie. I get baby fever watching your reactions.
This movie was my childhood
Great reaction Dasha ❤ fun fact: the animators of this film spent weeks at a zoo watching all the animals so that they could get all the movements down correctly. Talk about dedication 👍🏻

The Rescuers Down Under (1990)

5:06 Scar Warns Simba To Never Go to the elephant graveyard
I literally just got the connection when ppl say 'a monkeys uncle' 😮😅
To this day, the whole stampede sequence is the saddest moment I ever seen in a movie. I always dread it. As a kid to now. Death was not underplayed with Disney back then. But The Lion King is a very special movie. I’m glad people can still enjoy it today, but back in the day seeing it was truly remarkable. Interesting that you saw Timon and Pumbaa before The Lion King!
I've seen animals watch that scene and understand it. Amazing storytelling.
I saw that movie in theatre with my mom when I was 6 LOL

"Truth is in the eye of the behold."
Ehm ... not quite, Scar... 😅
The German & Russian versions of "Be Prepared" ("Seid Bereit" and "Будем ждать/Budem zhdat" respectively) are equally more intimidating than the English version!
Great reaction Dasha. This Disney movie came-out in 1994. Disney was well-know for this kind of movie back then. It was a known as a coming-of-age film. A very good children's movie. ❤
It was the middle of the Disney Renaissance. A decade where every animated movie was gold.
So Jeremy Irons voices Scar. In the song, Be Prepared, he tried to sing it but i cant remember if his voice went out a bit or he just couldn't hit some of the notes. Anyway, Jim Cummings, probably most known for the voice of Winnie the Pooh, took over. So they patched it up with both of their voices. Itd be interesting to see who can pick out when its Irons or Cummings
I love your reactions so much! Thank you, miss Dasha!

Quoting Simba: "Dad dad dad dad dad dad dad dad..."
😉😂
13:50 Because it's a good Disney movie. Al most all parents of protagonists die in a good Disney movie (e.g. Bambi, Frozen).
13:36 a theory is that it wasn't the fall that killed Mufasa, since it was not as high as it looked.
Instead he got trampled to death because he was injured and unable to get up.
I've seen fancomics re enacting this scene from his perspective, where he was still alive when Simba was calling him. But very soon after he passed out/passed away -_-
Horrid either way

Honestly though, Be Prepared is on my list of Top 5 villain songs.

Fun fact this was the very first movie I saw in the theater back in the day
13:45
"This is supposed to be like a children's movie, right?"
And it is one. There are children who were more prepared to cope with death when it happened in their real lives, because this movie helped them understand what it was.
Cried as much as you did to this reaction.
the first 5 minutes of this movie is literally the greatest animation in a movie period EVER.
but the entire film's animation is incredible
Mufasa was voiced by James Earl Jones, who did darth vader in star wars.
also,in that song when scar was singing "be prepared"
the hyenas were literally doing the nazi goose step that they did for hitler.
This was the first movie a remember it bring me to tears at 5 years old... But the second one is called: The Land Before Time(1988) oh Dasha... You must see it, I hope you do
Land before time only gets more dad the older I get!
Don't watch the remake Dasha, it's very bad, nothing beats the original.
the live action was good to me but I like the original more tho.
5:06 Scar Warns Simba To not to go to the elephant graveyard it's really dangerous
Dasha: _shock that the dad_ actually dies _in a _*_Disney_*_ movie_
Me: Clearly, you have never seen Bambi…
Great disney movie. Would recommend jungle book from 1967 aswell one of the best.
When I was little I always thought Hakuna Matata was made up for this movie. I was stunned when i learned it was an actual Swahili phrase said in east-Africa
18:38 "You know, I was hoping that Mufasa was actually, like, turn out to be alive, but looking how much time has passed, it doesn't seem it's gonna be the case."
Well, it hasn't really been that long, Dasha. Male lions reach full sexual maturity by the time they're two years old. It's typically _another_ two years before the average male lion actually _breeds,_ but it hasn't really been all that _long._ They're not like human beings.
Hakuna Matata Dasha. I miss this era of Disney
I don't know why Disney suddenly took an interest in CGI-live-action reboots of previous hits. I've seen the CGI-live-action reboots of _The Jungle Book, Pete's Dragon, Beauty and the Beast,_ and this, and they're just not the same. And, somewhere along the line, I became disenchanted with the notion.
Why?

Disney's Magnum Opus. I'm BEYOND HYPED for the 30th anniversary re-release. I never saw the original Lion King in theaters, but I did see the live action version in theaters.
So very glad you enjoyed this Dasha. Truly one of Disney’s best ^_^
This was the first animated movie i saw in theaters at 18. Had absolutely no expectations of even liking it.I still love it to this day
Hard to believe this is your first time watching this movie
Hello Dasha!😊 Wow! I can't believe you are just watching this one now!🤯 I actually bought the CD soundtrack to this after I saw it in the theater.💿🎶 James Earl Jones is the voice of Darth Vader and Mufasa here, LEGEND!🎙🏆 Jeremy Irons was a great choice for voicing his brother Scar. I totally forgot about the Timon & Pumbaa cartoon. That is cool you have seen that. TRIVIA: James earl Jones & Madge Sinclair are the voices of the king and queen here. In "Coming to America" they are the king & queen in live action.😉 Super emotional reactions to this classic animated musical, Dasha!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏 Have a fun Canadian weekend!😊
Fun fact: Hanz Zimmer composed the music for Lion King and both Dune movies. You should do a reaction to the latest Dune 2 movie, it’s also interesting to compare and contrast how both Lion King and Dune 2 deal with the issue of a king and his right to the throne.
Well, normal family ties don't work in ruling families, because here relatives are rivals for the ultimate career move in the family business. The line of succession is practically a stabbing order, where your place in line denotes exactly how many people you have to kill to become king (the so-called Richard III. method of succession; whereas at other times, the standard practice was more of a battle royale, with everyone killing everyone, last one alive becomes king). History is full of that and it's the stuff for great royal drama - after all, this is a Shakespeare plot ("The rest is silence", I'd say).
Fun Fact: Mufasa and Darth Vader are voiced by the same person.
Dang. You are the first person I’ve heard made a reference of the Timon and Pumba show.
Timon and Pumba was a fun show, i remember that. But yeah, you get to meet Rafiki here, and he's the total Yoda of the movie. Best character.
My favourite movie from this era was Hercules.
I grew up watching this all the time
12:37 We call those "wildebeest" in American English. Also, "gnu", but that is much less common.

You should definitely watch and react to "Lion King 2 Simba's Pride" too. You'll love it and it shows Simba as a Father and a King
1:53 Knowing what's coming, this made me chuckle. I watched the crap out of this movie as a child. I haven't seen it in decades now. Watching you go through all these old Disney movies has been a blast. Back when they knew how to make good stories.
I never bothered with the live action. From what I heard all the magic is gone from it, but eh. Maybe they're wrong.
This is an animated masterpiece.
The animation is beautiful. The scenery is exactly like Africa (my dad was in Africa and he said the sunrise is exactly like at the beginning of this movie) and the artists had actual animals to model making their movements so lifelike.
Every character is wonderfully done. Scar is one of the most evil of Disney villains and Jeremy Irons is obviously having fun performing this character, Timon and Pumbaa are the funniest of Disney sidekicks, and James Earl Jones gives Mufasa a voice of power and wisdom of a good king and loving father.
Every song is enjoyable and the music of Hans Zimmer gives every scene the audience the correct feeling for it.
And the story is well balanced. The dramatic moments lead to very emotional scenes that really hits the feels, then we have comedic moments to help calm us down from the sad stuff and the action leaves us at the edge of our seats.
All and all, it's an excellent movie and will always be my favorite Disney movie.
"This is supposed to be a children's movie why do we see a parent die?" -- You sweet summer child :D, this is basically Disney 101. Whenever they do NOT do it is the exception, not the rule.
Nala was about that action tho. Notice when the jig was up that hyena steadily creeping and when scar confessed and they ran to jump simba. Immediately nala ran in, even before his moms lol
This movie was also why my mom told me to watch what i say bc you dont know whos listening
Keep up the great work Dasha!
You are such a wonderful human being ❤
I can’t believe adult simba is voiced by the actor who played ferris buhler! 18:32 I learned this last year 😮

Great reaction to Hamlet with animals! Love this movie. Funny how you knew Timon and Pumba but not where they came from.
Actually, Disney movies are not without parental deaths (e.g., Bambi) and young characters without parents (Cinderella being subjugated by her stepmother).
Those are wildebeests that are stampeding.
Another one of their classics and Can You Feel The Love Tonight was beautifully performed by Elton John. Masterpiece of a film from the 90's in Disney's history.
It always weirds me tf out when Sarabi says, “Tell me it’s not true” and looks all distraught when Scar says that Simba killed Mufasa. Like, bruh, how tf would it have been his fault?? He was a small child. Like, I just don’t understand. Obviously, even if it was “Simba’s fault”, he was a little kid. Like, obviously he didn’t murder his fucking dad. Why tf did she respond that way?? Wouldn’t everyone immediately know that Scar is making shit up??😂
Another great reaction Dasha. I saw this in the cinema when it came out and has seen the stage production of it. I still like this movie after all this time.
Can't watch this until seeing the film, completely.
Was lured a few times before ( in the past ).
Easily one of the greatest animated films ever made. I see many people talking about James Earl Jones' fantastic performance which I totally agree with, but there is another I think would have made an excellent Mufasa that I wonder if Disney ever considered; ironically also named James: James Avery. Avery was already established as one of America's favorite dads in Fresh Prince, not to mention he had that deep, raspy, powerful voice that I think would have fit very well.
