Lion King is the most perfect disney movie in my opinion. The way the start and ending scenes frame it is magical. All the songs are iconic, the plot is simple but the entire thing is so beautiful and meaningful- it became more than just a cartoon, it's allegoric Art. I wouldn't change a single second in it. I saw it in the movie theater when I was a child and watched it when I was 30+ and loved it just as much. I have to say I personally enjoyed Aladdin and maybe even some others a bit more but I think Lion King is the best of all of them in purely artistic terms.
Some fun facts: The story of the lion king is based on Hamlet. The character scar was based on Sheer Kahn from the jungle book, the way he moves, the way Jeremy irons speaks his lines.etc. Mufasa is the only male in the pride (aside from scar) so its very likely that Simba and Nala are in fact half siblings. Finally, scar appears in another non lion king movie. Scar is the Nemean lion in Disney's Hercules. When Herc is posing for his portrait he's wearing scar as a pelt, the real Hercules wore a lion pelt as his armor. So Zazoo was kind of right saying he'd make a nice throw rug. This is one of my favorite movies from my childhood and one I've enjoyed sharing with my own children. Great video as always.
@@markplott4820the Lion King is a copy of Kimba which is just Hamlet with animals after Shakespeare rebranded the story of the Northman. We get it. Humanity retells stories over and over again. Perhaps, just enjoy them for a moment. They're retold over and over for a reason.
The Lion King ripping off Kimba is just not true. Kimba is a TV show, first of all, which outside of the main characters both being lions and named similarly, have almost no similarities whatsoever. Watch an episode or two of Kimba and you'll quickly understand that people who say they're similar have never watched any of Kimba.
That Lion King/Hamlet story & the Kimba knock off story are BOTH WRONG. Watch this video & you'll understand. ruclips.net/video/hCB0llZfPRs/видео.htmlsi=3zfWU6zRGz8UNx-4
I watched this movie 30 years ago in the cinema with my parents. We shed tears back then and we still do now! At almost 40 years old, I'm not afraid to say, this movie still tugs at my heart
So did I, I was 7 years old. I remember how big it was… it was pretty much the biggest animated Disney movie. Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, Aladdin and Lion King were all the biggest animated Disney movies
I wouldn't judge by the mane. Even Mufasa's mane was ginger without any hint of black. But yes, his age being 5-6 years is accurate because that's when they become strong enough to challenge a king for his pride. Any time younger than that is suicide unless he has brothers to support him.
Every single time I watch this movie, I'm instantly 8 years old again. It's always had such a powerful effect on me in the 30 years since that no other movie ever has. I cannot think of Mufasa's death scene for LITERALLY even a second bc I start to get choked up. It was the first time I ever had to deal with the concept of death and doing so at such a young age sticks with you for life. The music and soundtrack are legendary as well. The messages it teaches about accepting your destiny and how circular life is (hence Circle of Life) are profound as well. Just a legendary all timer of a movie and the best one of the Disney Renaissance Era and maybe Disney has ever made. 🦁 ☀️
Adult Simba: I know what I have to do, but going back means I'll have to face my past. I've been running from it for so long. [Rafiki hits Simba on the head with his stick] Adult Simba: Ow! Jeez! What was that for? Rafiki: It doesn't matter. It's in the past. Adult Simba: Yeah, but it still hurts. Rafiki: Oh yes, the past can hurt. But from the way I see it, you can either run from it or learn from it.
Simbas cub is actually a girl! You could watch The Lion King 2 for the upgrowing of simbas daughter Ciara with new twists, it would be nice. There is also a prequel movie in the works with the origins story how mufasa became king and how scar gets his scar (his name before "scar" was "Taka")
This is my all time favorite movie. The animation, the music, the message…gets me every time. My favorite scene is when Mufasa’s spirit visits. Another movie you might enjoy if you haven’t seen is The Hunchback of Notre Dame. It’s a Disney 90s gem that tends to get overlooked. Be warned, though, its villain makes Scar look like a kitten.
I was 13 when I watched this in theatres, and its unreal how many people cried. Not just kids. Everyone. You could hear the sobs all around. What a movie!
I was 5. My mom brought me to see the lion King. It was my first movie theater movie. I was crying so hard when Mufasa died that she had to bring me out of the theater for like 5 to 10 minutes to calm me down before I got to go back in and watch the rest of the movie. 😂😂😂
Yes, they have a cub at the end, and you can learn about her in The Lion King 2. It's a surprisingly decent direct-to-video sequel, and I recommend checking it out.
Jeremy Irons absolutely knocked it out of the park. Such a fantastic Villian who followed up this with Die Hard With Vengeance. Such a fantastic classic
And also, the voices casting it´s incredible; starting with Mufasa (James Earl Jones, who was the voice of Darth Vader among another epic roles), and Scar (Jeremy Irons).
@@marktallentire3464I remember hearing that and being so excited for his character, then I watched the movie and fell in love with Timon and Pumba. Zazu who? 😄
"He'd make a very handsome throw rug" hits different when you watch Hercules and see Scar's pelt in the background as a cameo for the Namean Lion pelt from Hercules's 12 Labors lol And Scar's true name is Taka, which means dirt or garbage so no wonder he was always in a bad mood
The Circle of Life, the entrance song, was done in one take. The main singer was not reachable before they were to start recording. He never rehearsed with the background chorus. Yet, he came into the recording studio and sung as though he had been there the whole time. Lion cubs are fully grown after 3 years. So, Simba was with Timon and Pumbha for maybe 2 1/2 years. There is a midquel about Simba growing up away from the Pridelands, but focuses more on Timon and Pumbha. The Lion King 1 1/2. Those two also had their own animated series in the 1990s. Hijinks of them going around the world. The hyenas and Rafiki the Baboon also had segments in that show. Here are some suggestions of other Disney movies, some very underappreciated. The Three Musketeers from 1993, The Rocketeer from 1991, Dick Tracy from 1990(I think), Atlantis the Lost Empire, Fantasia and Fantasia 2000, TRON and TRON Legacy, and so many more.
Saw this in theaters as a kid with my Pap Pap. First memory I have of hanging out with him, just he and I. He was floored by the colors/music. And this was a very traditional/old school Navy man.
@@SilvanaPuris2310 You can look it up on YT pretty easily if you want to. For example a video called "Kingdom Hearts 2 Gameplay: Part 27 - Scar's Ghost" might be a pretty good one for that purpose.
Even in Lion King II Simba is haunted by his trauma of Scar. He still has nightmares with him and his father's death, and you can see how reluctant he is with accepting Kovu into his pride, as he resembles Scar so much. Simba's character is so well done
I was around 12-13 when this released and saw it 3 times in theaters. This movie holds up so well because you had master storytellers using classic literary themes to tell a story about life, love, and responsibilities in a way for children to digest. It utilizes both shakespearian and Arthurian (King Arthur) elements. Specifically betrayal and the importance of not only being King but a good King. In Arthur legends the king and the land are one. So a good King equals prosperous lands and a Bad King, Scar, destroyed Lands.
Haven't seen this movie since I was a kid and it was in the theater. The instant Hakuna Matata started playing I got the greatest feeling of nostalgic joy!
First off, thank you for watching my favorite movie. Second off, while I agree that Scar is incredibly evil, I have to know if you've seen Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996). The villain in that movie is so evil, God Himself is forced to intervene.
Scars real name was Taka, he has abit of complex background. He was manipulated by the Hyenas into doing some bad things (Anakin Skywalker style). Scar chose his name after receiving his namesake. There are actually several versions of Scars background. But they all agree that he chose the name himself.
I mean, sure, that might be in the sequels or tv series or whatever, but to me that doesn't really count as canon for this movie. Retconning stuff while milking a franchise rarely leads to the most logical or satisfying explanations.
17:44 This song always makes me tear up or even cry and it's one of the only things in cinema that makes me do that. Idk what it is about it, but it just gets me
12:06 my sentiments exactly. So many people say that Maleficent is the worst Disney villain ever. But I am convinced that Scar is a thousand times worse.
Scar is IMO one of the best villains of all time. Palpatine being another. They both accomplished all of their goals despite being physically weaker than the good guys. Crazy.
I have a very strong love/hate relationship with this film. I saw it in the theatre with my father in July of '94 at the age of 8 and we both loved it. We loved it so much he went out and bought the soundtrack the next day and he, my sisters, and I would spend the rest of the summer jamming out and singing along to it. That December we got the call at my mother's house that my own father was dead, by his own hand. I went from learning about the concept of death and loss from this movie to experiencing it firsthand in the span of 6 months. Afterward the post-graveyard speech and that reflection scene hit just hit so hard I vehemently refused to watch this movie for years after. In spite of all that it gives me great pleasure to see new faces enjoying it to the same degree we initially did. :)
A great reaction as always, it surprise me a lot that you have never seen this one before. It's my all time favorite movie, I used to watch this movie like 2 times per day when I was 5yo, I used to known every dialog (in the latin american dubbed version). There is a thing with the music in this movie that its simply genius. First of all, the leitmotif "This land" is associated with simba, in the beggining when appears, it does in a simply, timid way, you could say insecure, but when simba has to rise and become king, the music get more epic and full of other instruments. Secondly, the whole movie follows a semi realistc logic, but there are two moments in which this logic dissapear. one is when simba sing about be a king, thing that a child doesnt know anything. and the second one is when scar sing about kill his family to gain power. When simba start singing, the colors, the shapes and even the way the other animals are drawed are slightly different. this happens because simba is losing perspective about reality and is getting carried away in his fantasy about something that he doesnt understand at all. And when Scar start singing everything looks normal because he is only singing about his plan, but as soon as he remarks how incredibly awesome he is and how everybody has to shown respect towards him, the colors, the shapes and even the ground start to became "irreal" because scar also lose perspective and indulge his own fantasies. I do not normaly left comments on anything but since this is my favorite movie, and since you are my favorite ytreacter. well, I think that summarise everything. I would love to elaborate more but my English is rotting in my head and its too much text, so... keep with the great work and remember to laugh in the face of danger ha ha ha. salutations from the old continent.
13:06 I definitely didn’t fully comprehend it at the time but I do approve the way they treated death unlike other movies so you can appreciate every little moment with your family
The run that Disney was on in this era has never been matched in the world of animated films. It was just one hit after another. And with The Lion King, it was probably the peak. It cuts deeply at the heartstrings but also has plenty of valuable lessons like Timon and Pumbaa's mantra of "Hakuna Matata". Simba's desperation to rouse his father after the stampede clears gets me teary-eyed every time I see it. I'm glad you got a chance to watch it after all these years.
By the way, that was baby Kiara being held up at the end, Simba and Nala had a baby girl 😊 There's a Lion King 2 movie and its Kiara's growing up movie. It was a direct to VHS movie it's lower budget and lower production quality and not a classic like the original, but it's still pretty good and its nice to have a female lead in Kiara (I think she's my daughter's idol 😄).
Kiara has been one of my favorite Disney characters since I was a kid. The Lion King 2 was one of the movies I grew up watching and I didn't actually see this first one until much later on. I always loved Kiara and now, as an adult she resonates with me more than ever before, with the way she views the world and everything.
i cry everytime i was this movie. so many good quotes and philosophies, but i think the one i love the most is " yes the past can hurt, but you can either run from it, or learn from it"
The stampede scene is legendary for the amount of work and time it took. I remember seeing a documentary, and I believe it took a few years because they had to actually write programs for the animation for them, nothing like it existed yet.
Me and my brother once watched my 3 year old nephew, watching this, and watching his range of emotions throughout. This was one of the first Disney films to use quite a lot of high profile voice actors rather than 1 or 2: Mufusa - James Earl Jones Scar - Jeremy Irons Zazu - Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean) Timon - Nathan Lane Hyena Shenzi - Whoopi Goldberg Hyena Banzai - Cheech Marin Adult Simba - Matthew Broderick
The whole Rafiki and Simba dialogue when Rafiki reminds him who he is, was something they should of kept in the 2019 movie. Such a powerful message being excluded is criminal! Masterpiece!
That movie's entire existence is criminal! I can sort of excuse making live-action versions with actual actors, but a "live-action" version with cgi animals is just a whole different level of blatant cash-grab.
Saw this movie with my little sister SO many times, knew EVERY line and musical sequence by heart. We were poor in NYC, no radio in the car, so I would recite the whole movie for her while she sat in the carseat to help mom out and keep little sis occupied. She never tired of it. We didn't have much, but those are memories I'll forever cherish.
It’s beyond refreshing to see a blind reaction to this. So often, it’s people who have seen it but haven’t in a long time. Rarely do people go in with next to no knowledge of what it’s about.
I hear Timon's voice and I think about his actor (Nathan Lane) and Robin Williams in the movie The Birdcage. It's a comedy/thriller. Then you have adult Simba's actor Matthew Broderick along side Nathan Lane in The Producers remake. It's funny how paths cross in movies later on down the road for actors.
Scar's real name is taka which means worthless or trash and mufasa name nicknamed him scar after a injury he got when he lead a group called The Lion guard
Lion King came out a week before I was born, my mom went and she had to leave the theater at around the time Rafiki goes to find Simba. I was born about 5 days ahead of schedule lol. She always jokes with me that I had to see that movie too. I love this film.

"The Lion King" has many details in common with "Hamlet", the famous novel by Shakespeare. For me, it´s the best animated film ever, with one of the best OST ever composed (by the great Hans Zimmer). ALWAYS touches my heart in some scenes. It´s a truly masterpiece.
I was mid-teens when this came out, and too cool and edgy for "kids" movies. Somehow I got roped into going to see this in the theaters (little brother's birthday party or something) and I absolutely LOVED it! My heart soared at the beginning song, broke into pieces when Mustafa died, and thrilled at the triumphant return of Simba to reclaim his rightful place. It wasn't long after that I read "Hamlet" and made the connection that this was essentially a retelling of story as old as time, but done with such fantastic animation, music, and voice acting that it made an old story fresh and vibrant again! Loved your reaction, your costume, and the guest appearance of your cat!

I have to say I personally enjoyed Aladdin and maybe even some others a bit more but I think Lion King is the best of all of them in purely artistic terms.
Some fun facts:
The story of the lion king is based on Hamlet.
Great video as always.
the LION king was stolen from Japan - KIMBA the White Lion.
@@markplott4820the Lion King is a copy of Kimba which is just Hamlet with animals after Shakespeare rebranded the story of the Northman.
We get it. Humanity retells stories over and over again. Perhaps, just enjoy them for a moment. They're retold over and over for a reason.
Actually.......You're BOTH wrong. ruclips.net/video/hCB0llZfPRs/видео.htmlsi=JZgMZq2BHMfZogEG
Simba, fans have theorized, was gone for 5-7yrs judging by his lion's mane.
I wouldn't judge by the mane. Even Mufasa's mane was ginger without any hint of black. But yes, his age being 5-6 years is accurate because that's when they become strong enough to challenge a king for his pride. Any time younger than that is suicide unless he has brothers to support him.
@@dariusbrock2713 Not once has he mention a black mane, where'd you bring that up?
Simba and Nala's cub in the final scene is their daughter Kiara the protagonist of Lion King 2!

Rafiki: It doesn't matter. It's in the past.
Adult Simba: Yeah, but it still hurts.

I think hand drawn cartoon movies do have a lot more heart than CGI cartoons. They seem much more human and alive.
I second this, please watch the second movie
*Kiara
I assumed Scar got his scar from Muphasa when they grew up and took kingship, or at least in establishing his dominance and place.
nah "remmember" goes so hard, Zimmer's a beast.
Fun Fact: the skull head that Scar was holding was a Lion skull and hyenas don’t eat lions in real life so it’s possible Scar ate his own brother
@@Lunarayz.photos Perfectly understandable.
Yes, they have a cub at the end, and you can learn about her in The Lion King 2. It's a surprisingly decent direct-to-video sequel, and I recommend checking it out.
Still after 30 years this is still my favourite movie and what Jeremy irons did with scar was incredible
I'm having a hard time believing this movie is 30 years old, I watched this movie religiously as a kid good times😊
Jeremy Irons absolutely knocked it out of the park. Such a fantastic Villian who followed up this with Die Hard With Vengeance.
Such a fantastic classic
The Lion King is legendary.
Facts!
@@austingillum4807this is the 30th anniversary of it
And also, the voices casting it´s incredible; starting with Mufasa (James Earl Jones, who was the voice of Darth Vader among another epic roles), and Scar (Jeremy Irons).
Don’t forget Rowan Atkinson as Zazu
@@marktallentire3464I remember hearing that and being so excited for his character, then I watched the movie and fell in love with Timon and Pumba. Zazu who? 😄
"He'd make a very handsome throw rug" hits different when you watch Hercules and see Scar's pelt in the background as a cameo for the Namean Lion pelt from Hercules's 12 Labors lol And Scar's true name is Taka, which means dirt or garbage so no wonder he was always in a bad mood
Simba climbing Pride rock at the end is one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history. This whole movie is a masterpiece
Yep, this is the 30th anniversary of it
Crazy part was how in Kingdom Hearts 2, Scar still haunted Simba after this.
really? how was?I didn't know it, I would have to see it
@@SilvanaPuris2310 You can look it up on YT pretty easily if you want to.
My favourite quote :"the past can hurt, but the way I see it you can either run from it or learn from it."
One of the greatest opening sequences, ever!
I love that Zazu was voiced by Rowan Atkinson, famous for playing the incomparable Mr. Bean!
God would have definitely burned Frollo in hell for his actions.
Scars real name was Taka, he has abit of complex background. He was manipulated by the Hyenas into doing some bad things (Anakin Skywalker style). Scar chose his name after receiving his namesake. There are actually several versions of Scars background. But they all agree that he chose the name himself.
Taka, meaning "waste" or "desire" in Swahili.
I mean, sure, that might be in the sequels or tv series or whatever, but to me that doesn't really count as canon for this movie. Retconning stuff while milking a franchise rarely leads to the most logical or satisfying explanations.
His father Ahadi gave him that scar when he was a cub bc he tried to kill Mufasa before
@@CrispyPrince Another I read claimed the scar came from a cobra and another from a buffalo.
Im so glad you wore a costume because as a kid I used to wear a lion costume too. The lion king is one of my favorite movies of all time
I totally agree this is definitely a classic that everyone needs to see, adult and child alike.
Scar is IMO one of the best villains of all time. Palpatine being another. They both accomplished all of their goals despite being physically weaker than the good guys. Crazy.
Can we just agree that Ed is the best character?

RIP James Earl Jones
A true king among performers
You should watch Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride. It’s a continuation. You will love it.
Always makes me laugh seeing how this movie makes ppl think hyenas are so bad but in reality, lions absolutely torture them lol.
I always loved Kiara and now, as an adult she resonates with me more than ever before, with the way she views the world and everything.
i cry everytime i was this movie. so many good quotes and philosophies, but i think the one i love the most is " yes the past can hurt, but you can either run from it, or learn from it"
The fact that V is so emotionally invested is so damn adorable, I can't stand it!
A epic gem and no one can tell me otherwise, I still love this movie
The stampede scene is legendary for the amount of work and time it took. I remember seeing a documentary, and I believe it took a few years because they had to actually write programs for the animation for them, nothing like it existed yet.
That costume gives me ideas. Mostly about what my costume will be this year and where I want to go. Thx for the inspiration, V ✌️
That went in a more wholesome direction than I expected. I blame Nala's bedroom eyes for putting me in that headspace! 😄
Me and my brother once watched my 3 year old nephew, watching this, and watching his range of emotions throughout.
This was one of the first Disney films to use quite a lot of high profile voice actors rather than 1 or 2:
Mufusa - James Earl Jones
Scar - Jeremy Irons
Zazu - Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean)
Timon - Nathan Lane
Hyena Shenzi - Whoopi Goldberg
Hyena Banzai - Cheech Marin
Adult Simba - Matthew Broderick
Jeremy Irons as Scar has such a deliciously evil smoky voice. Great performance.
It’s beyond refreshing to see a blind reaction to this. So often, it’s people who have seen it but haven’t in a long time. Rarely do people go in with next to no knowledge of what it’s about.
Love the costume. Love the movie. Loving the reaction. Thanks for everything you watch
"they are the king and queen of...the biome" just...the wording there cracked me up
I hear Timon's voice and I think about his actor (Nathan Lane) and Robin Williams in the movie The Birdcage. It's a comedy/thriller. Then you have adult Simba's actor Matthew Broderick along side Nathan Lane in The Producers remake. It's funny how paths cross in movies later on down the road for actors.

Having lost my father at a young age, the “he lives in you” scene gets me every time
That is one of the most beautiful cats I've ever seen. Great reaction!
Now I need you to watch the sequel; I love the Lion King so much. Favorite disney movie hands down.
Scar was named Taka, which means garbage. Mufasa means king. So the parents named their children King and Garbage. Scar is a name upgrade.
Actually Simba has a daughter lion king two is another amazing movie
Your reaction was about as emotional as I would expect but your face at the end of "Be Prepared" was priceless
