      @@joshuamooney4509 What kind of trimmer are you using? I found that investing in something cordless that makes as little noise as possible freaks my timid cat out the least amount possible. Also try turning on the trimmer and just resting it close to your cat while giving them some pets or treats. Once they seem unfazed by the trimmer in their environment, try using it on your cat from there. I'm no professional but have a cat who used to be feral and is afraid of EVERYTHING and this helped her.

    How do you keep from nicking the cat's skin? My vet told me you need to be very careful to not go too close because cat's skin can get nicked very easily.

    • @NationalCatGroomers
      @NationalCatGroomers  4 года назад +27

      Hey Justin! Your vet is correct, cat skin can be easily nicked if shaving while not using proper technique. The skin needs to be flat and taut, so the clipper glides over it smoothly (without catching any wrinkles). We also only recommend a #10 blade as the safest for shaving cat hair, our favorite clipper for this is the Wahl Bravura on the #10 blade setting.

    • @a_tiny_orange
      @a_tiny_orange 3 года назад +6

      Since people shave too, if you ever try it yourself you may find that it’s very intuitive and you already know how to avoid nicking. I just gave my cat a whole lion cut last night, first time ever shaving a cat and it wasn’t TOO difficult! No nicks! I was a bit worried in the armpit areas but as long as I stretched kitty’s arms alllllll the way out, it was OK! And yes keep the blade on the most protective setting possible the whole time!

    • @a_tiny_orange
      @a_tiny_orange 3 года назад +5

      I bought the same Wahl blade she’s using in this video. Except mine is pink 😁 My cat LOVES me, and will let me do whatever grooming on her myself. Shes a mamas girl…. But she has bad separation anxiety when she’s away from me. She’s not comfortable in new spaces without me (like a groomers) So now we can do it at home together, it’s much nicer for everyone!

    Is there a way to avoid the little nipples on their belly? I've unfortunately gotten 2 cats nipples (only one, and always the very bottom right one ) even after trying different positions/angles. I use the same type of clippers. Do I need a new blade? It doesn't typically snag on things. Or do you recommend a different type of clippers/cutting tool when encountering cats with more visible/prominent nipples?

    • @NationalCatGroomers
      @NationalCatGroomers  Год назад +3

      Hey! Nipples can be a bit tricky. Typically I use less pressure to skim the hair off so I can see them clearly. Then I can have an easier time shaving around them instead of directly overly them. Hope that helps!

    • @NationalCatGroomers
      @NationalCatGroomers  4 года назад +36

      Thanks for commenting! We've found that keeping a cat calm during the grooming process comes more from the cat groomer's actions then of the cat being inherently calm already. Trust me, there would be no way to have a cat only grooming salon, running full time with multiple groomers, if we didn't see cats of all temperaments and personalities every day. It comes down to the way you handle the cat. If you have the guard on to prevent then from biting, it’s much easier to maintain control. Look at the way she positioned herself in relation to the cat. She established control over its ability to move, which made it seem like the cat was calm, but it’s something you have to learn to do or figure out so the experience is quick and safe for both of you. Just practice with the clippers off first to make sure the cat can’t make sudden movements while getting clipped.

      There's a big difference between a cat being afraid of something they've never been introduced to and preferring not to be touched and handled in a specific way. Most cats do very well with calm, confident handling that takes their preferences and temperament into consideration, while also relieving painful areas or performing grooming services designed to prevent them from happening. I'm sorry to hear your cat hasn't been introduced to clippers (or to new experiences) appropriately. A trained, Certified Feline Master Groomer will best know how to approach grooming a cat with previous bad or non-existent experiences.

    AWFUL. This video should have a DONY TRY THIS AT HOME disclaimer.Maybe only a trained professional knows how to shave so close to the skin, or pull a cat's legs and tail so harshly without causing harm, trauma, anxiety, but I would NEVER treat my (or any) cat this way - unless he is sedated and won't remember and hate me for the rest of his life. I know the tech doesn't have time for kindness and coaxing, but if you treat your pet this way, you're an asshole. Watch videos by The Cat Butler and so many other kind groomers.

    • @NationalCatGroomers
      @NationalCatGroomers  2 года назад +12

      We are not techs, we are cat groomers. And there were no harsh positions or movements, and shaving is done with a #10 blade (the safest blade length) to keep their sanitary area neat and tidy to prevent matting. We also use this blade and positioning when a cat comes to us very matted and they need to be removed. The skin must be held smooth and firm or else the risk of cutting is greatly increased. We always consider the cat's body, natural movements and preferences when choosing which techniques to use and when - this is demonstrating one way of providing a sanitary trim.
