I watched this come in from the edge of the runway at Warton, and enjoyed seeing the first three aircraft being tested over the next couple of years. Very sad for the men and women who worked on it.
Why? It was £800 million over Budget and 9 years late, despite cutting the order from 20 to 9. On top of that it was an incredibly old design. Had they actually been delivered on time they might still be flying, but barley 2 had been delivered by the time they were cut.
This is why all the remaining aircraft in this project were cut up and not at least preserve one of the aircraft is so that the politicians who, pulled the plug won’t feel the shame of cancelling a beautiful and capable project.
I only worked days but I did know a few on nights. I will tell you if I knew him. I think you can send a private message if you don't want to tell the world.

This aircraft would have been better than the Poseidon
What a crime it is not still in service!

It never reached service. That was the problem.
Yes, I worked at Woodford for over 20 years.
What types are the chase planes?
Not sure of the exact models, but it was a PC9 and a Hawk.

Wouldn't of happend to have worked at woodford would you 1mactavish2? If you did you probably know my dad who worked on this aircraft
Cancelled when 9 years late and 800 million over budget. Gotta love the military establishment wasting tax pounds.
Gotta love BAE Systems for seeming to always want to start up a project so they can cancel it and close a manufacturing aerodrome.
This sounds political and I’ll bet the Yanks had something to do with it because they couldn’t achieve the same results. Always the same.
