I might be wrong, but i think Drew installed a mod that names city after it's location(Barcelona in actual Barcelona), and i think the mod named it Istanbul while the actual ingame name is Constantinople. I might be wrong though
@@voxlknight2155 for some reason in these tsl games the cities are named based on their location rather than the civ that founded them i personally hate this as it gets really confusing
It’s from one of the mods. Every tile on the map has a city name attached to it based off of the most modern settlement. In the case of Constantinople it has to go off the Turkish version “instanbul” because it’s the most modern. You’ll notice that every city on the map has a funny name that usually won’t appear in the civs regular list.
Bysance was the capital city of the empire, took by the roman who renamed it constantinople then by the ottoman who renamed it istanbul. The game is a bit inacurate but not entirely wrong.
well, i think that placement is due to map size. The earth map is pretty cramped in europe, so there's probably not enough space to actually fit Gaul into where Belgium is.
4:05 Those Indian cities are both in geographically correct positions. 1 is the start city ofc but I am really surprised the game picked up the right name for the 2nd city. Edit: The rest of the cities of both leaders are in correct positions too. I guess TSL is coded to pick names accurately. I just assumed it was random.
The Brazilian city names in this mod are a huge mess, only Rio de Janeiro get the real localization. I was playing yesterday and my second city got it name from a state / county, not even a real city
Fun fact: locally, the city of Constantinople has actually been called Istanbul (a corruption of "the city" in some language of the region) since the days of the Byzantines!
everyone complaining about istanbul is peak "i get all of my history exclusively from video games and youtube". stimboli was used in vernacular greek for centuries before the turkish conquest. constantinople was merely the official name used in official documents. from stimboli comes istanbul.
Istambul is name of greek origin. It come from phrase: Istim Polis - "To The City". Constantinople as biggest and most important in region was often called just "The City".
Just gonna go ahead and recommend the Berbers for the next one. It's nice to have a north African civ that's able to take Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco.
It's Istanbul because you have Real City Naming option enabled. Cities will be named based on real world geographic location instead of the Civilization that founded it. That's why Canada founded St. Louis and Phoenicians founded Jerusalem.
Hey Drew, are you gonna showcase the new game modes at any point in time? Like the zombie defense one, or even the random techs and civics? Also what are your thoughts on Portugal (Mr. FreeRealEstate)?
I was curious about City-states and Natural wonders! I didn't see any City-states in the game, and wasn't sure if there was a way to make City-states show up in their real world location, or a way to make Natural wonders show up in their real world locations. It would be pretty funny if Aztec discovered the Bermuda triangle near Cuba!

Honestly, there is so much weird stuff going on in Greece for this game.
When I first saw Bizantium's capital: NO, GOD, NO, PLEASE GOD NO!
There's no way the Byzantines would call their capital Istanbul
Its Turkish propaganda, they said if anyone sends letters to them labeled byzantium, they would burn them
