my boyfriend and i were in the botanical gardens in athens today and there were lots of free roaming tortoises and we met one really brave and feisty one and it wouldnt stop attacking my bf's shoes!!! i had white shoes but my bf's shoes were black! made me think of this guy, I wonder why this is... looks like a tortoise maybe?
Basically: He probably thinks your boyfriend's shoe is another tortoise because males tend to headbutt a nearby male because they're competitive like that. They also do it to females, but they're less aggressive towards them.

It's because the black shoe is obviously darker and therefore "looks more like another tortoise" to the tortoise. Very dumb and simple logic but that's how the tortoise think. You could have put anything there that would be slightly darker and it would attack that too.
You are right! And in fact the turtle is trying to have sex with the shoe. No joke. Turtles headbutt before mounting other turtles, and there are videos of turtles headbugtinf then mounting shoes all over yt.

If it were, it would be hitting the white one. Stadistics said so, despise the disproporcionate crime rates of the black community. Ah, but nobody cares when is the white shoe the one hitted.
Turtles are prey for crows and ravens, also they eat some bugs that are black when they are young so they naturally want to attack the color black
