Here is how I see it:
The mom was in a abusive relationship probably and was debating on weather or not to leave and considering she said she took a sleeping pill she hasn’t been getting much sleep she has been the one taking caring of the girls not the bf. Meanwhile, the bf probably invited the other dude over for some drinks. If what he said was true he was passed out on the couch drunk while the girls were calling for there sleeping mother. Since she was asleep they kept crying until the bf came into the room drunk and killed the child.
