Y’all I fixed the problem! So what you need to do it take the battery out, leave it out for one night, then charge it again until it’s green. I did this and it worked perfectly. Try blowing the battery cartridge if it doesn’t work. It worked for me so try this!
Typical Nikon I think. SAME EXACT PROBLEM WITH MY P-500! I have since learned the problem is something to do with the crappy battery compartment design on these cameras. Evidently, through hundreds of times of inserting/emptying battery from this compartment, the bottom-mounted springs wear out. Put another way, the battery no longer makes full contact with the gold leads at the bottom. I have adopted the wedge or shim approah to remedying this vexing matter. This, in effect, adds greater pressure by forcing battery down farther into cavity so it makes proper contact. I can't believe how many people complain about this DBS (Dead Battery Syndrome). Folks - buy a cheap multimeter and actually test voltage of your battery. Mine needs to be 3.7+ volts for my P-500 to operate properly. This will prove the problem IS NOT your battery or battery charger. Nikon needs to redesign this goofy arrangement. Perhaps moving the springs to a top mounted cover. That way, if the springs do wear out with time, you simply order a need spring lid. If this helps, write me here: bcube59@yahoo.com to (hopefully) thank me.
Thanks for the info, you save me some $$$ because I was about to thro it away, I just put a piece of paper between the battery and the cover and this works like a charm!
Additionally try pressing the on/off button for around 25 seconds (just keep it pressed) ... Battery needs to be fully charged... At least 3.7v to 3.8v (check with a multi-meter) ... I tried nearly every troubleshooting step BUT this booting lag step finally worked for me and now I need not listen to Nikon's money making advice to to upgrade to a P1000 😀
Plug the camera in for an hour without the battery. Then unplug and install fully charged battery. Should come on. Mine did. No issues since. Bought mine not working. Was about to pitch it but it came to life after the affore mentioned procedure.
Hola: Tengo este problema, despues de un largo tiempo sin utilizar la camara. Voy a encenderla y solo se enciende el led y a los pocos segundos se vuelve apagar. He provado a cambiar la bateria pero nada. Alguien me puede ayudar? Gracias.
Thanks for sharing. When I purchased the camera i bought extra batteries and none seem to be charged up enough to turn on the camera. I don't think it is the battery but the camera itself. How did you fix your problem?
Plugging it into a REALLY slow charger solved it for me. The upper circle that lights up in the begginning (followed by a beep) wil turn off after a second or so, but the light next to the lightning picture (next to the display) wil start flashing. it takes ages for it to charge too...
Klemen Brezavšček I’m currently having the same issue. I just bought a new charger and the lightning light is blinking on and off... How can this be fixed?
Mine did the same...I hear the little click ,the light goes on then shuts off, hasn't worked for about a year + now. I just bought a Canon sx530...but I am not happy with Nikon for this because I baby all my devices and this happened out of the clear blue, oh same happened to an LG g4 cellphone I owned.
The transformer output is not great enough. Try a different transformer. It happened to me in Australia. I tried another adaptor and it charged no problem.
We managed to SOLVE THIS ISSUE. I went to the RUclips video ruclips.net/video/nC3vGBQd1jE/видео.html titled "Updating Coolpix Camera Firmware in 5 simple steps" from July 12, 2016-as was kindly suggested in the comments below. I pulled the battery out and let it set for a few minutes and reinserted it then I made sure the battery was fully charged, using the OEM charging cord. One problem I had when following the video instructions was, for it to work I needed to clear the old firmware which was (Ver. 1.0) off of my memory card. I used my Mac computer to format the SD card directly, instead of trying to do it through the camera, which was not working for me. Once I did this, it took about 3 minutes to download the entire (Ver. 1.1) firmware info onto the now clean SD card, I then put the SD card back in the camera and at that point I went through the instructions in the suggested video, and it worked. Camera turns on and off as it is suppose to. Hope this helps!
Ok you need to check your sub charger. My is 5 volts out put with 2 amps. And I had this problem. I found out that u need a sub charger that 5 volts out put with 1 amp. Then it will charge correctly and work later.

THANK YOU! Nikon told me my P520 is “unrepairable”. And a local camera shop told me the same. You, my good person, showed that it is repairable, quite easily too! You also saved me a few bucks! Thank you for sharing this quick fix.

@@jov84 Hello friend, greetings, I am bothering you to ask you a question, you seem to know a lot about this problem. My camera is a P510 and it has an erratic operation, it always turns off at start up, only sometimes it lasts a bit and even lets you take a picture, but the vast majority of times it just beeps, takes the lens out and turns off immediately. The screen turns on but not always, most of the time it's just a blink, the strangest thing is that it doesn't always do the same thing and I can't find any pattern. This does not work. This is a charging issue, not a turning on and off issue. If your camera won't charge to begin with, you cannot turn it on to update firmware.
