It is nice to see someone thoroughly review a WRX with the CVT automatic, every other video just has journalists take a dump on it while hordes of fanboys chant "manual or bust". Thank-you.
I've had my WRX CVT since Nov 14, it is a great car. Good review, just will say for me I no longer use I mode at all. If I drive in S or S#, I find that the only difference in mpg's between those and I mode is due to how I use the accelerator, not the mode. I average about 24mpg's as a daily, and 30-32mpg on highway trips, those are hilly near me, driving long trips over the Berkshires. Now I pretty much just jump into S# once it warms up, and drive in that mode as a daily driver. The only downside to using S# all the time is that I paddle shift down at stops (because S# holds gears upon decelearation). MPG's actually went up since I switched from mostly S to S# mode, since I think the car is less boggy in S#, even in "city" traffic, as long as you use the accelerator wisely. It is a great car, the engine offers a "camry" type commuter, and a "camaro" type sportscar, depending upon what you want at that moment. Suspension is also amazing, BTW, if you find a way to exceed its ability, you are driving way too fast for non-track locations.
Nice comment. I also have the WRX CVT and really love it. I will say that for my driving, "I" mode makes a pretty big difference in returned mpg's, particularly when driving on the interstate (I consistently see 32-33 mpg with this setting). However, "I" mode does really sap the fun out of the car when driving in a city or urban setting. I now only engage Intelligent mode when traveling at highway speeds for longer distances. It's great to have this much flexibility built into one vehicle.
Actually If you put the car in "I" mode it will utilize "6th gear" where as "S" and "S#" modes will be limited to "5th gear". Try it while cruising down the highway, switch from I to S or S# and you will see the RPM climb a little as if it up-shifted to "5th gear"
Nice vid Bro! I just subscribed... I have a '16 WRX Premium CVT Pkg. & I love my rex. IMO the cvt WRX is modern marvel... I've had my car almost a yr. & I must say, once you get to learn how subaru designed this machine to work, you will love it! This is coming from a person who left behind a 5spd. manual sport coupe... One other great thing about the automatic wrx, is that the computer also has a LEARN technology. If you tend to be heavy footed on the gas, the computer adjusts % accordingly. If your easy going ditto. Its nice to see wrx owners coming together to learn more bro!
I don't usually post comments on videos but I wanted to thank you for your realistic review of the CVT WRX. I just recently purchased a '15 WRX with a CVT and have been loving it so far. You've earned yourself a subscriber. I've watched all of your DIY videos already. Keep up the good work :)
I really enjoy your video! Ive been watching a lot of wrx cvt videos, but yours I find explains the different modes for the Si drive in the greatest detail. Thank you!
Sarah -n- Tuned there will always be a limit on power modding. There is and will always be a power limit on the engine until you have to start taking apart and rebuilding. I'm talking about throwing bolt ones and getting good tunes. Sooner or later your engine block cannot handle it. And you'll need to get bigger postpones and stuff. As far as the CVT and the manual wrx/sti. The power mods should be at the same limit. But with the CVT you would want to definitely need to have a tranny cooler.
The intake combined with a pro tune really wake the car up, though. If you got a very conservative tune you could probably go stage 2. Several guys in the FB group are stage 2 and loving it with a CVT.
The Wrx with a CVT is an excellent choice. It performs well, delivers good power, it gives you flexibility in heavy traffic, it is fun to use paddles, and it is smart when you're in a traffic jam, especially if you live in a dense city. I've owned my WRX since March of 2015, and love the car (the Smartlink/bluetooth not so much...when I get a text message on my phone I repeatedly get the car saying "you have a message" even after I hit "ignore"). Also the buttons are too small on the screen when you're trying to select a station, or change from am to fm or bluetooth.
nice vid! well i just got my wrx CVT a week ago and the only thing im concerned is the acceleration, it feels as if its not getting the correct response you want when you want to floor it from 0-...
The problem for CVT's is the Torque Converter...this will forever limit the CVT. Upgrades are limited now. I think F1 has a upgraded torque converter, but not sure if the Lag will Persist...I'll keep my eye out.
Something to consider, if you have all the traction/stability controls on when you floor it, you will get lots of lag as the ECU determines how to get you moving while not spinning the tires...it's fighting itself at that point and leaving you sitting there saying "wtf gooooooo" lol. Experiment with it off.
Mook aton XD , Thanks i will definitely keep trying to find the best way for my car to launch, Like its weird my car is responding more to sport mode than sport sharp? an is there something else aside of trac mode to be off? last thing X , Is it better to launch with hand brake up? or just holding down the on brake and acce;/?
my 2015 wrx the engine block cracked at 3000 miles they had to replace my engine and they were not happy about it, I didnt race it or drive it like a maniac like they said I was, I drove it normal and they couldnt believe it, They flew two mechanics from Japan and made me drive their test vehicle to see how I drive, and also put a computer on my car for a month after the repairs to monitor my driving habits, But I didnt mind since they paid for the two months payment that the car was in the shop. After all this the car run's fine, forgot to mention this is with the CVT trans.
" made me drive their test vehicle to see how I drive, and also put a computer on my car for a month after the repairs to monitor my driving habits.." That's just a whole other level of bizarre.
Sorry but you don't get extra boost or torque when it shift , it's just the powerband , when you at like 6,500 rpm you don't get as much torque as when you are at 5 k so when the CVT simulate a shift you just go back in the powerband
Hey man I got a question, Driving in the Sport mode, if im not full throttle is it going to feel like it shifts before redline. I thought that if you were in regular sport mode there should be no gear simulation?
Ok so from what i understand: Yes, it will shift before redline. The only time where the computer doesn't shift is when you "Launch" the car. All other modes will simulate gear shifting.
when the epa rates this car they tested it in each of the modes, I, S and S#. they average the numbers together and that's your mileage. in reality it's close to the manual from other videos I've seen.
Not trying to be that guy who corrects you, but the temp where you gauges are is coolant temp not oil temp. My gf is looking at one of these next week. :)
I have a 2016 Foerster XT. I know that the fastest 0-60 times are in Sport mode. I also know that my car jumps off the line faster in Sport # mode. Does anyone know if starting off in Sport #, going almost up to redline, then switching to Sport mode without taking my foot off the gas pedal is bad for my car? I have tried it a couple times and it seems to switch modes seamlessly.
Awesome bro. Subscribed. I test drove both. I love the way the manual feels but i realized im either too lazy or too mature to use a manual transmission and the way i travel each (60 miles) with chicago traffic im leaning towards the auto. So im goin for the cvt and hipefully gets it next week.
+AwRxA BooSteD It is great that someone is making a review of WRX CVTs, but there are a few things must be said to clear the cloud. These information can be found in other videos on youtube. If you understand the how a CVT works, it doesn't have "gears" but rather hydrologic pulleys with a metal belt connecting them. The pulleys adjust the width of the gap and changes the ratio from engine to drive tran. The "gears that it hooks on to" are preset pulley gap ratios that simulates a stepping gears. Without going in depth on the physics of the CVT, when it was first designed it was meant to hold on a specific RPM to deliver power to wheel with minimum drop off. Hence why it holds on certain RPMs. In these WRX each mode changes how the transmission react. In intelligent mode it will be CVT until acceleration is beyond 40%, then it goes into the preset stepping "gears" mode. In sports mode it begins the steps at 30% acceleration. In SportSharp mode it will always be on stepping mode. In a case where you want to get maximum acceleration with the benefit of CVTs smooth continuous power curve, you must launch it. By holding brake and gas in SportSharp mode. It will rev to about 2500rpm. Once you let go of the brake it will reach and hold at around 5800-6000rpm, and get to get to top speed as fast as it can. This is the beauty of Subaru's CVT.
It is nice to see someone thoroughly review a WRX with the CVT automatic, every other video just has journalists take a dump on it while hordes of fanboys chant "manual or bust". Thank-you.
Trades46 I hates these people talk down on the cvt this is best cvt
Wonderful video

Eric Renaud M.Ac. Holding the simulated gears does suck. Absolutely no throttle response when it does that.
I only use it when I have an "oh shit I need gas soooon" moment.
Nice vid Bro!
I just subscribed...

Well said...Thx for the support!
Anthony S. i owned the wrx 2015 and then hopped to the cvt 2016 and honestly i love the cvt, the modes are actually really fun to drive
Anthony S. do you have the eyesight package? And if so do you know if you can put tint on the front?

This was probably the most helpful CVT WRX video I've watched. Get to see the car accelerate with other cars as reference points.
I just wish we weren't as limited on power upgradability. I'm afraid of doing anything more than a stage 1 protune.
Sarah -n- Tuned dam rite. Yep.

Alex Johnson I decided to just save for an STI Brembo swap and BC Racing coilovers instead:)
Alex Johnson any slipping issues with the CVT stage 2? I'm stage 1+ with a conservative tune an it's better.

Thank you for making a real video! This is super helpful for folks!!! You did awesome! GO CVT!
The kick when it shifts is literally the same as every non cvt automatic in the world.
Thanks for your review! I just got my CVT WRX a few day ago. I can't wait to play it with all the drive modes to as well.
That's awesome!! Congrats! I know you will LOVE the car...add me on Instagram, would love to see your car. AwRxA

Asides from that, i love my car its great above 2 gear XD

Im looking into getting one of these as I do a lot of city driving and dont really want a stick as my daily driver. Very helpful review thanks!
Good review
CVT is not a bad transmission, Subaru replaced the CVT with all of there WRX s4 model that has 300bhp, and their Levorg STI wagon.
Yep..now Im sure that im buying one of these soon. Thanks bro!!!
cvt is actually lot of fun to drive
I agree.
nice review, i should be getting my 2017 wrx limted cvt next month. just to clarify, you can use the sport and sport # settings in manual mode right?
I believe You can put any mode into Manual by sliding the Gear Stick to the left while in Drive. But Sport and Sport# are most effective. Thanks!
I love my wrx manual 2008 but I had to get cvt wrx 2017, its just so convienant especially since I live near the city!
Sorry but you don't get extra boost or torque when it shift , it's just the powerband , when you at like 6,500 rpm you don't get as much torque as when you are at 5 k so when the CVT simulate a shift you just go back in the powerband
Nice vid!
So which had the better pull? S or sharp?
Hey man I got a question,
Driving in the Sport mode, if im not full throttle is it going to feel like it shifts before redline. I thought that if you were in regular sport mode there should be no gear simulation?
Ok so from what i understand: Yes, it will shift before redline. The only time where the computer doesn't shift is when you "Launch" the car. All other modes will simulate gear shifting.
thanks!
So how has the transmission been holding up? Any issues that you have come across or you should/ would expect vs manual?
How many miles to the gallon is everyone getting? 18/24 seems to be too low for a car this light.
when the epa rates this car they tested it in each of the modes, I, S and S#. they average the numbers together and that's your mileage. in reality it's close to the manual from other videos I've seen.
From what people have said elsewhere, some are getting 30+mpg highway and 20 ish city.
Did you sell your WRX?
Thanks for the review. Just what I needed to know about the CVT on this WRX.
The only car that has a perfect CVT
@Josh C. Here in kuwait for anyone who buy a car with cvt transmission .. he will have 10 years warrenty for the transmission
Thanks for this--not many vids on the WRX CVT.
that's was a good review never really seen an automatic wrx
+jaime carrasco There are a few out there but not this Detailed. One of my subscribers requested my take on it and I Shall Provide...! Thanks!
I love my new wrx 2016 cvt lots of power and super fast
its not that fast lol
how did you mount the camera
so do you think for racing on highway sport or sport sharp is faster ?
S# will def shift faster, but honestly you'll have to drive both to see what you prefer. I prefer Sport.
How many mods does the CVT have ???
Talking about my experience, Sport mode has better acceleration and smoothness than Sport# .
Is he the most relaxed driver you've ever seen?!
Good video man!
i love the car but i hate STARLINK the bluetooth is lagging so much and the overall system suck also...
I agree... it's unfortunately not a very good investment (the nevigation, bluetooth, etc). I would not buy it again. I love the car with the CVT.
fuel rating is bad eh?
Great review man!
Do you know what a blinker is? You should learn to use them, they're great!
wait...i saw you use it! good job!
Not trying to be that guy who corrects you, but the temp where you gauges are is coolant temp not oil temp. My gf is looking at one of these next week. :)
I love the CVT , I daily’d a manual transmission for the past 5 years and I HAAATTTTEEEEDDDDDDD it .
Good video man
Cool Video man!
Thank you for video! I'm looking for a Multiple sclerosis friendly tuner. The 08 auto WRX was ok,and fun but idk.
I have a 2016 Foerster XT. I know that the fastest 0-60 times are in Sport mode. I also know that my car jumps off the line faster in Sport # mode. good video and explanation!
NICE!!!!!!
Dude awesome video and easily one of the best WRX CVT video reviews/breakdowns out there! Love my 2016 WRX Limited!
Who in their WRX cares about traffic laws? Cop didn't see it, I didn't do it!

I like it
Can't really understand what you are saying because of the poor quality of audio. sorry.
