- One of the most traveled trails in Glacier National Park, Iceberg Lake is accessed via the Many Glacier area of the park. There is a small parking area right at the trailhead, turn just past the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn to reach it, or just park in the main Swiftcurrent parking lot and walk to it. There is another popular trail in the area, Swiftcurrent Trail, so watch the signs to make sure you are on the right track. The lake is usually accessible mid-June, any earlier and there can be significant snow fields to cross, and the seasonal bridge will likely not be installed leading to a tricky creek crossing.
At ten miles out-and-back, it isn't a short walk, but with only 1500 feet of elevation gain, most fairly fit people will tackle it without issue. The first 1/4 mile of trail is very steep, but following that initial warm up the rest of the trail has a more gradual ascent. It is pretty exposed, so late afternoon sun can make the trail very hot. It is impossible to predict if there will be actual icebergs in the lake, later the season the lesser the chance, but fast warm-ups can melt the ice quickly.
This trail is prone to closures, so check the official park website before going. Bears and moose frequent the trail, more so early before the heat, so make noise and carry bear spray. Once on the trail there is water at the Ptarmigan Falls area and at the lake itself, but it's a good idea to carry a few liters.
If you decide to go for a swim, proceed with caution! The water is shockingly cold, so before plunging in, make sure you have an exit strategy. It will literally take your breath!
