It’s kind of weird that Xbox isn’t popular in Japan. I mean Japanese people prefer IPhones over Sony phones. And prefer Apple computers in places that can afford them. The PlayStation uses American software and American games. So what’s wrong with Xbox?
TLDR, Xbox approaching JP market with American mindset imaginable which either result in doubt, skeptic, and outright humiliating. 1, Xbox is pretty much thought as "invader" in JP market since they already had Sony and Nintendo which is local brand that they support. 2. Historically bad move they ever made is they release first XBOX side by side with PS2 of all console they had to compete. That alone is pretty much bad move knowing PS2 made a record sale that still stand today, making them fell off from JP market just like that. 3. The console and the controller size is waste of space. JP houses mainly a minimalist and that's a no-go that is until XBOX 360 come into play but the stigma of being large console still remain 4. Whatever library they had, PS already has it. Buying two consoles is not a common thing in JP. 5. Their first party game cater to western market solely which result in none of it pick JP market who interest is vastly varied from JRPG, all the way to Visual Novel and collecting games you can can name of. 6. Since PS and Nintendo is their local brand, they're most likely cheaper than imported XBOX to buy anyway 7. Their approach to JP game dev and publisher is very poor which lead them to lose exclusive release of Resident Evil 4 to GameCube and Final Fantasy 11 to Sony. The only time they got the big score is from SEGA but that's because they close their door on gaming console market after Dreamcast low sales, not because interest in XBOX. Lastly... 8. Even before the XBOX email leak year ago, XBOX did try to acquire Nintendo back then, while completely ignoring the fact they're just a new kid on console market at the time. Numerous outlet said they were laughed at by the whole board of Nintendo, but it also serve stigma that XBOX never wanting to invest in JP creative development; they just want easy way out for cash by having JP dev team on their brand. Compare it to Sony who literally spent time making first party developer that still hold to this day, XBOX approach to wave money at you for the sake of having you instead of investing in your idea is outright insulting, especially in JP where they really push the creativity off the chart. So yeah, XBOX pull a Henry Ford move on JP. And its not very effective.

Sega Dreamcast is underrated. It would've kicked PS2 ass because it had better graphics than the PS2. For example: MvC2, RE Code Veronica, Grandia 2, SF Alpha 3, Guilty Gear X, and SF 3rd Strike on the DC were the better versions than the PS2 version.
Just because it sold poorly doesn't make it terrible console. The Dreamcast IS an awesome that only survived 2 years on the market. Sega's financial troubles didn't help. Great system.
It wasn't going to win. I had a Dreamcast, I loved it, but you gotta be realistic. The PS2 could practically play its entire back catalogue and it was everyone's first DVD player. How do you compete against that?
Graphics don't really make a console, switch beats out the PS5 so far and their not even on the same level. What makes a console is the games, always will, the Dreamcast had some awesome games, but the PS2's library is a god tier level library. It's just not comparable.
The Switch on a tech level isn't all that, but if you look at its full first party library... it just makes you want to get a Switch. And that it's portable is really cool. The PS2 was just the GOAT, not as many first party games as the Switch but it was fully backwards compatible with the PS1 which had a great library as well and it could also play DVDs which at the time was a big deal. The DS appealed to non gamers as well as gamers, my little sister had one of those and she didn't even know what a GameCube was.
Ps2 only sold 23m in japan for almost 13 years of ps2 sells. And there's 127m of them in japan that time (2013). Except you said there's 1 out of 5 or 6 people in japan have ps2 I still believe it. Ps2 dominate in north America and Europe that sold more than 50m each (more than 1/3 or 30% sales)
Less people buying old consoles in that year of course. Also companies stop producing older ones when they have a new release. Like stopping ps1 production when ps2 comes out.

The legendary ps2 just refused to die for so many years
News flash: its already dead for a decade.
The Switch is sold more unite in half the time it took the PS2. The PS2 was out for 14 years, while the Switch has only been out for 7 years.

In that era the 75% of all consoles in the world were PS2s
Nowadays the switches are less than 40%
@@rednorth7312 But the Switch still accomplished it in half the time. The reason the Switch is only at 40% is that we have two other consoles that sold really well: the PS4 and the Xbox One. During the PS2 era, the GameCube and Xbox sold poorly.
@@rednorth7312 But ps2 is also use as a alternate dvd player back then so people that are not a gamer also buy ps2 .
NDS and Switch sold so much better than PS2 per month. That PS2 sold 156m-158m is just thanks of its longevity of +14 years, and its DVD-player which were the cheapest quality DVD-player on the market for years. Switch has now almost 130m in just 6 years and 3 months! It took PS2 eleven years to pass 150m. So that means that Switch is outpacing PS2 by lightyears.
Of course Sony fanboys are always ignoring the facts and the reality.
Yeah yeah so what its the excuse for the sales of PS4 and PSOne?
What in Heaven's name are you talking about?
For as long as I've known consoles existed, the ps2 has always been as best selling as the DS, the reason for the ps2 as of today (yes, there are so many non-original ps2s still selling in so many countries outside of the more developed countries), is portability and its lightness, and also unlock for non-original games.
O PS2 em 7 anos no mercado já tinha ultrapassado 140 milhões de unidades vendidas, apenas o restante vendeu depois disso, e olha que ele conseguiu isso sem as facilidades que existem hoje em dia

PS2 was the breakthrough in video gaming

I was surprised to see the PlayStation 3 in first place for a few moments, I suppose it will vary by region. That console did not sell well in my region, it was very hard to get.
It’s kind of weird that Xbox isn’t popular in Japan. I mean Japanese people prefer IPhones over Sony phones. And prefer Apple computers in places that can afford them.
The PlayStation uses American software and American games. So what’s wrong with Xbox?
Sony and Nintendo are Japanese companies
TLDR, Xbox approaching JP market with American mindset imaginable which either result in doubt, skeptic, and outright humiliating.
1, Xbox is pretty much thought as "invader" in JP market since they already had Sony and Nintendo which is local brand that they support.
2. Historically bad move they ever made is they release first XBOX side by side with PS2 of all console they had to compete. That alone is pretty much bad move knowing PS2 made a record sale that still stand today, making them fell off from JP market just like that.
3. The console and the controller size is waste of space. JP houses mainly a minimalist and that's a no-go that is until XBOX 360 come into play but the stigma of being large console still remain
4. Whatever library they had, PS already has it. Buying two consoles is not a common thing in JP.
5. Their first party game cater to western market solely which result in none of it pick JP market who interest is vastly varied from JRPG, all the way to Visual Novel and collecting games you can can name of.
6. Since PS and Nintendo is their local brand, they're most likely cheaper than imported XBOX to buy anyway
I’ve had both PlayStation and Xbox and I’ve never came to love a console more than the Nintendo switch. It’s such a great console and with my lifestyle and job I’m always on the move so to be able to play it anywhere and then when I’m home be able to plug it into my tv is what made me buy it

But it have the least sold even less than the Wii u. One of Nintendo's biggest failures.
@@SlainByTheWire Also, the PS2 is backward compatible to PSX.
