I’m in Highschool, just started. Yet it feels as if I haven’t been in school for years when I listen to this. When I listen to this, I feel like all my bad memories leaving & both my future and past come together to become bright. This is one of my favorite songs.
I'm 37. Only just realised how special this song is after listening for years. The live version, is what music is meant to be. Much love my young brother. I hope life delivers all you request. And much more
Jeff's sparse guitar shimmers over Billy's gritty acoustic chopping, Mike's drumming is spot on, and Nicole's understated bass gave a strong foundation for the guitars. They really did this song justice here.
It has been nearly 22 years since this song first hit my ears. 22 years. I'm not young anymore. Hearing this version fills my head with the exact same dream and vision as it did in 1995: Crusing in a jacked-up 1970 Plymouth Fury S-23 with my elbow hanging out the window down a lone two-lane highway. There is no substitute. If I had produced the original music video, that is the exact car that would have been used. I understand that these are all new (and extremely talented) band members except for Billy. With all the respect to the former band members, this live acoustic version invokes an emotion that the original studio version can't quite reach. These kids didn't miss a fucking note. Talk about a song and a version that makes an average guy get out of bed every day of his life and go to work....this is it.
Klint Regan I’m in Australia man and feel the same way and yup when I first heard it was a Friday night just cruising in an EH Holden (a great Australian car) just chilling smoking weed drinking beers. Listen now and it reminds me of how great my teenage and early 20s were, life is short, chill and enjoy!
Shakedown 1979, cool kids never have the time On a live wire right up off the street You and I should meet June bug skipping like a stone With the headlights pointed at the dawn We were sure we'd never see an end to it all And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues And we don't know just where our bones will rest To dust I guess Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below Double cross the vacant and the bored They're not sure just what we have in the store Morphine city slippin' dues, down to see that We don't even care, as restless as we are We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts And poured cement, lamented and assured To the lights and towns below Faster than the speed of sound Faster than we thought we'd go, beneath the sound of hope Justine never knew the rules Hung down with the freaks and the ghouls No apologies ever need be made I know you better than you fake it, to see And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues And we don't know just where our bones will rest To dust I guess Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below The street heats the urgency of sound As you can see there's no one around
To think the drummer was six years old when this song came out! Nicole was probably in High School. Fuck I feel old!!! I will always love the Smashing Pumpkins with the original members!!
Whoever engineered this gig did a commendable job. The drum sound is marvelous, and the electric guitar tone is heavenly (although a bit poorly intonated). The performance otoh is just spectacular. Hats off to Billy and the band!
That breakdown section is gorgeous. For me the whole song builds up to that section on the original recording and this version does it justice in my opinion.
This freakin song G, came on my old radio clock, the first year of law school, and that was it. I liked so many before, but sing solidified, yes, every incline I had to totally enjoy Mr. Corrigan. Cheers my love.
English is not my first language but I have been listening this band and this song since I was a teenager and now, after 3 years of living in an English-speaking country and practicing it every day, I realized what the lyrics means...simply beautiful it is not just a beautiful melody and riffs,is It is far more than that.
I just lost my first bestfriend yesterday. He gave me hoodie at my 2021 birthday with small note in the left edge, turns out it was 1979 lyric. I just notice a moment ago, it was his message to me. I'm heading his funeral right now. God Bless his soul.
So many years of playing and writing, and writing and writing....and this is arguably a masterpiece. And it's all him. Every bit of it is his finding something so stunning. Obviously not the greatest vocalist, but this needed his voice. So impressive.
I find Billy to be one of rock's great vocalists ever. No other voice could carry this great lyrical content. Start with the premise that the voice is terrible. Won't be long til you realize it is brilliant in its uniqueness!
This whole set is amazing. My favorite version of “that’s the way” as well. I wonder if the radio station just has a great sound guy or who else to thank for the great mix. But also a great performance and arrangement
What an honor and an unforgettable experience these 3 had. Billy is a 90s rock God. Pumpkins are and will always be my favorite band of all time. I'm glad Billy has his head on straight. Hard to imagine music after he and Eddie are gone.
One of the best (last) rock n roll bands of all time. So glad I got to live to see the end of a decades long era, even if I was just a little boy and couldn’t appreciate it at the time. Music today is dead. Utterly and unequivocally dead.
i dont know why but theres something about 90s music that seems to be eternal.. i was in the elementary school when this song released. i watch soooo much MTV back then. this is one of my fav song
this version, even tho it's 10 years old now, is still a gift to all smashing pumpkins fans like myself. hope this song is keeping you alive in quarantine as it is keeping me. regards from brazil to everyone!!!
E qualcosa nasce dentro di noi quando troviamo ciò che fa incontrare il pensiero con un cuore che cerca solo il tempo per vivere in un ricordo che ti porta al presente...
Props to the sound guys cause the band sounded really neat specially the drums ;) PS: Billy calling you a bunch of freak was magical, I even got the chills and wasn't there! I can only imagine how cool was that show
gwa 83 it's sad really. Billy destroyed the pumpkins legacy because of his own selfishness and stupidity. if he only let D'arcy and James help record the albums, they would be just fine
I think he did in the beginning but Butch Vig said they were not proficient enough and that if they were allowed to record the parts it would take forever.
That snare is satisfying as fuck...
that recent high school graduate's snare is giving me life like I'm a deatheater
So is Billy ;)
ya! great placement in the mix and just the right amount of sustain. and the tone is right on!
That drummer has got the Gig of his life at a young age. Wow.
Who is the Kid ?
Vol deMort the kid won an audition to join the band. I read it in Rolling Stones.
Mike Byrne: ruclips.net/video/OOIHhG4croE/видео.html
Vol deMort Corgan fired the bassist and drummer after one album and replaced them with clones of himself banging pots and pans.
and was fired after three years in the band and looking hella bored at this gig.
This is probably the best live performance of this song that I have seen. He sounds great.
The Smashing Pumpkins was one of the best bands of the 1990's.
Trueee
Yup
Nirvana tho??????????
@@alexturnerismybae “one of the best”=plural
U misspelled "ever"
I'm 38 years old. And I fucking love this song.
James same here mate! Pumpkins were the soundtrack of my life.
i am 5yrs old and i love it more than you 😀
oh yeaahh, im here!!!!

Amen to that sir
My High School girlfriend loved this song. Always reminds me of her.
Don't consider yourself average!
Likewise

sounds like the best smashing cover band ever!
they're cheating tho, they got the real singer to join their cover band, not fair! well done tho
Never appreciated how good a guitarist he was. There are some great chords and interesting timing there.
Man, awesome Jazzmaster. That bassist's voice. The drummer's accuracy and energy. I have never seen something so wholesome in a long time.
To think the drummer was six years old when this song came out! Nicole was probably in High School. Fuck I feel old!!! I will always love the Smashing Pumpkins with the original members!!
I was five when it was released. I'll be 31 next month 😂
Best
This is one of the best songs ever written
wow..it's been 25 years and still love this song...Thank you Billy for making us this everlasting song...
Just perfection. I love this performance
RUclips algorithms working me back into my old school goods.
Whoever engineered this gig did a commendable job. The drum sound is marvelous, and the electric guitar tone is heavenly (although a bit poorly intonated). The performance otoh is just spectacular. Hats off to Billy and the band!
very good
Lol.. You cant judge the quality of live music when listen through a video! The best and ONLY way is to be there.. You know live.
Agreed
agreed 100% I was thinking dayum that snare sounds beautiful
Very dry vocals and drums. Normally I'm not a fan of that sound, but it fits on a live version of this song.
That breakdown section is gorgeous. For me the whole song builds up to that section on the original recording and this version does it justice in my opinion.
The bit where Billy was silent? ...
As soon as I hear this song start I always picture that damn tire rolling down the hill. :)
Art, in whatever form it may be, shall always transcend time.
This is truly a timeless beautiful song that will never leave our heads, or hearts. My best friend used to love this song.
I love and miss you beya

The drummer even't born when the song came out. You're the grat Billy.
the memories from this song are so strong
that sound engineer was a drummer
abedzilla agree.... hahahaha

True 😂
Love seeing Billy smiling.

Absolutely brilliant!
Love this song almost as much as life!
October 2020 here, right before the time for smashing pumpkins

the kid at the drums is really great--as well as the others. lovely, lovely version
this is actually one of the better live versions of this song I have heard. Well mixed and I think the acoustic made it sound really clean.
This whole set is amazing. My favorite version of “that’s the way” as well. I wonder if the radio station just has a great sound guy or who else to thank for the great mix. But also a great performance and arrangement
1979 on 2018 feels like the 80's....

Quando inventarem uma Maquina do tempo sou voluntário e faço questão de ficar preso nos anos 90
sounds like the best smashing cover band ever!
Billy corgan is an excelent guitarrist, almost all the song is his guitar tune and drums. I've always tought there were two guitars.
i dont know why but theres something about 90s music that seems to be eternal.. i was in the elementary school when this song released. i watch soooo much MTV back then. this is one of my fav song

There's only 1 PUMPKIN here.
He couldn't stop fighting with members
He did most of the work
billy and jimmy did all the work
