Great guide! 1 comment i need to make is in the consumables section (because this is for wotlk classic) most people use warcraft logs especially if you're in a good guild and due to a change in warcraft logs if you use a battle chicken the logs will become invalid and youre guild will not want you using it. in tbc our engineers are currently supper POed about this. only reason i bring it up is its BOP so alot of serious people will go gnomish for the battle chicken and then swap to goblin for sappers and itll waste time/materials to get this item

But ultimate yes you’ll use double DV/DC until you kill heroic LK. After that, there’s room for you to farm ICC and reassess a new meta for unholy trinkets that include the RS ones as well

Picking the Runic Power talent ( Dirge )over the one that increases Plague/Scourge Strike ( Outbreak ) damage seems weird. Isn't Scourge Strike the main attack for Unholy?

I’m not very good at arena and like to do some casual BGs aswell as PvE content. Was wondering which you would recommend, DK, Ret Pala or Mage? Not sure which you’d say it the easier of the three and easier to master. Appreciate the help!

I'm pretty sure the rune refresh mechanic after a doge, if it works properly will devalue expertise even more. I think it's just slightly off in your statweights. Sorry for the rude comments on other videos.
It also should be noted that if you don't reach certain breakpoints with str/haste gems str/crit should be stronger. In Multitarget fights str/crit gems also pull ahead.
My only recommendation from my personal experience (also played on a progression server from start to finish as unholy) is that tailoring should beat out jewelcrafting in terms of DPS gains because of snapshotting your gargoyle. It's also way easier to level and make lazy gold off of so that's nice too. I'm personally extra lazy/money hungry so I'll even take enchanting too even though I know that engineering is better. I generally would top 1-3 DPS on pretty much every fight during progression and farm content all the way from Naxx to ICC 25 heroic so I never felt like I needed it. Also I will say that I generally prefer frost subspec over blood subspec even if it's the start of the expansion. It synergizes with both Necrosis and Blood-caked Blade, so it should win. This is also an important boss debuff and is basically our version of improved Thunderclap from icy talons. Furthermore, I would take a look at 3 points into Outbreak (3rd tier unholy) and getting rid of Unholy Blight and Dirge. I personally was never super impressed by Unholy Blight's damage and Dirge felt outpaced by Outbreak because the extra runic power felt unnecessary. The spec would otherwise be completely the same. I tried out the Dirge/Unholy Blight spec during Ulduar and I just couldn't get it to beat Outbreak. That all being said, I wouldn't be surprised if even with these changes that it's so close in output that it doesn't really matter, and your opener/melee uptime/snapshotting accuracy will be the primary deciding factor in an Unholy's DPS. Just my own personal take, great video otherwise. My only gripe is that you could have recorded yourself performing the opener on a target dummy or something and possibly highlight when you have a prime snapshot moment to gargoyle. Possibly slowing down the recording at key moments when needed. The unholy DK opener sounds brutal to perform at first, but it really comes down to muscle memory after a handful of weeks.
Im playing retribution for tbc and i love the difficulty of twisting perfectly. and since they remove twisting in wotlk im not so keen on it. and thinking of unholy. it seems like unholy has abit of a skill cealing wich is what i want. is it something you would recomend?
Hey buddy I've played ret and I main unholy in many wotlk P servers. Ret is extremely fun and easy, you'll switch from seals depending if your aoe or single target. Unholy is all about keeping your diseases up and dumping your runic into death coils, It takes practice but it's very easy once you get it locked down.
Tailoring is a great choice, but playing around the proc can be a bit finicky at times. I'd still rate the raw flat stats from JC higher. Also be aware that tailoring is a dead profession for DKs in PVP if you plan on doing that, as you'd want +35 spell pen enchant on cloak instead.
This seems like a very beginner's guide to Unholy DK. You don't go over applications of glyph of pestilence. You don't even mention how you can use blood tap to get multiple death runes. You don't reference disease juggling. And you can literally just face the opposite direction instead of running out of melee when summoning gargoyle.
Heya, awesome & clear vid! Good job! One question I have though is about Wandering plague. I've read and from my own (limited) testing, it seems that wandering plague has severely reduced impact on diseases spread by Pestilence. Wandering plague would have a 1s ICD and diseases spread by Pestilence tick at the same time = only 1 shot at proccing wandering plague but also only 1 proc if both ticks crit. Do you have any knowledge on this? I tend to play with glyph of disease e.g. so does that mean I cuck myself badly by using it?
Hey, dont really understand the tip with scripting gargoyle that meles. Does it mean, when im in melee and nuking some boss / group of mobs i should go out of melee to summon him or when some boss / group of mobs only melee i shouldnt summon him in melee ?
I played an UHDK on Warmane through H25LK and one thing I have to say is how important these videos are. The amount of misinformed guides for 3.3.5 is crazy. Nothing more fun that being a DK on the LK fight 💀

Hey so I've played uh dk on quite a few pservers, was just wondering what you think of insane str pot over haste pot, had a guild leader who had me farm the recipe because he said it was more beneficial for me.
the haste pot is 100% better for the purposes of the snapshot on gargoyle. Insane strg is good, but mostly only good for really niche fights and burst windows of dmg. Even then, I'd still want to use haste pot on Unholy--I'd really only strength pot on Frost DK for fights like Hodir HM for example.
Hey mate, during the opener if none of your trinkets have proced do you hold off and wait for procs before summoning your gargoyle or do you just use it anyways with the heroism? Thanks
Great video, but I have some questions. Why do you take 3/3 Morbidity instead of 3/3 Outbreak, and why do you Scourge Strike before Blood Strike in your opening rotation? Should you not Blood Strike first to proc Desolation before you Scourge Strike? Thanks in advance.
Its ok guide for starters. But for end game have many flops. For glyphs you will use for ghoul, frost fever, and for pestilence, or you will miss 1 scourge strike and waste 1 gcd. Your dmg source will be from top to bottom from you melee, frost fever, blood plague, scourge strike and then death coil. If you play horde if you will chose orc. If you start near boss (LK for example) you opener will be blood strike for 5% dmg for all you attacks. PS Rugs your editing is amazing

How are you generating these values for stat priority? In retail it's as simple as running a Sim through Raidbots, but I wasn't aware that something like Raidbots existed for Classic.

Yeah I thought not taking Outbreak but taking Dirge was weird too. And is Reaping really worth it just for an extra Scourge Strike? I feel like a Scourge Strike isn't much higher in DPS than 2 Blood Strikes and an extra 3 Talent Points.

@@colinhobbs7265 You go Unholy, it has twice the AoE damage Blood has, and you can tank any mob anyway as Unholy. Just go Unholy with Blood subspec and use Frost Presence and Death Strike for elites.
Going Unholy I feel like its my obligation to go orc despite being intrigued by that troll racial [not regen]. Is it a big difference or its mostly the same..also are there any notable differences in solo blood build farming between orc/troll/tauren?
I'm confused as why you apply your diseases before you go blood presence? you snap shot them with unholy presence on them which means they don't have the +15% dmg from blood presence
We aren’t running glyph of disease so the disease damage snapshot isn’t being refreshed anyway. The unholy presence is WAAAAY better for gargoyle’s snapshot than for your opening disease snap
Hey, there are a few things that I actually don't completely agree on: . Talents> You're not putting 3 points in outbreak while deciding to go for those 3 extra points on necrosis regardless of playing blood subspec or frost subspec. I've never seen any point (besides dual-weilding on unholy) in which 3/3 outbreak is less damage than 3/5 necrosis, if there's any point that would be on frost subspec. It makes no sense to me not-to spec into outbreak with blood subspec given that Scourge Strike will probably be your hardest hitting ability paired up with melee on total numbers. Also, speccing into Dirge looks awesome for a rotation performed on a dummy but it's not a must-take talent when you got a resto druid on your raid that's aware of how much value Revitalize brings up to the table (and even if Revitalize procs don't make up for it, when they generate on average 160 RP with full uptime on rejuv/WG in one entire minute, you get one free gcd for horn or even better rune tap+ bs). Opening those 1/2 extra dirge points could go into Necrosis for example (in the case of Outbreak being better) or 1/3; 2/3 outbreak. .Glyphs> GoDD is amazing early on but starts decreasing it's value on endgame gear. If you were actually going for a glyph choice on endgame gear with 2+ targets to cleave GoIT and GoDnD will just do better due to the multiplicative effect on the amount of targets and GoTG would surpass GoDD due to the insane amount of Strenght you're actually getting at that point. .The stats weights are from a specific point of gear? Arp has an exponential effect so the number should ramp up towards endgame thus changing the value. Also there are no stat weights when considering AoE in which crit is amazing for those kind of fights. .The opener> DnD + Army was just a way to proc 2nd t10 bonus so it became popular; it gives 25 RP total but at the time of the pull you're on 14-15 RP. Of course it is great on any single target encounter but in the case you're opening with 2+ targets in which you can DnD it would be better to delay it. Starting with IT is situational and definitely not the best way to open. I'd add that on roleplay fights or those that you can sprint to the boss in les than one GCD the best opener would be BS>PS>IT. Not only because diseases carry on DiM's such as desolation but also Rage of Rivendare talent and potential trinket procs/effects like DMF: Greatness & Unholy Strength (Fallen crusader enchant). All of this being multiplicated by Wandering plague. It's worth to note that when you go for unholy presence over blood presence, althought your ghoul and garg get the 15% extra haste (garg snapshotting it) you're also loosing the 15% damage on diseases; UHP opener is good on some cases but also situational (reasons explained below). It's always discussed wether if Troll or Orc are the better class choices for unholy but there's a thing that has been a subject of heated discussions back then: GCD is 1.5 seconds on most cases while spell GCD cap can go lower up to 1 second. Gargoyle strike is a spell and thus GCD cap should be 1 second. Some people were saying that pets could go lower than that GCD; long story short> there were people that provided evidence that's not here nowadays (worldoflogs) and all that's left are forum discussions poiting that garg GCD was/wasn't affected by spell cap and thus your gargoyle can/can't do more than 27-28 casts on it's full 30-seconds duration (due to the summoning animation). Which version is the true one? We will find out (or maybe we'll never find out if they change shit) when WoTLK classic is released since we also got completely different coding within private servers (some having a boosted garg that can easily go over 30+ casts and some others in which you're stagnated in those 28 casts since naxx till ICC-RS) Depending on which case is true (it happens to be some info about , some things could be completely useless. If the GCD cap is actually a thing and we take in count a BL opener with some amounts of haste (legit100 haste) + gloves anything that pushes gargoyle strike below 1 second is a waste and the 3 things stated above (on a raiding environment AKA with Imrpoved Icy talons, Icy talons and moonkin/ret on raid) cover the ''1 second cast gargoyle strike''. This basically means that Potion of Speed, Berserking and UHP on opener are actually useless. This is the main reason of why some things can't be spilled as the truth because we are currently lacking information to prove it, specially since world of logs shutted down. As it was on retail, Gargoyle actually should have a downtime between casts (which most servers don't have coded) of about 0.3 seconds, which would bring the value of Berserking snapshotting lower. All of this w/o taking in count that orc provides 322 AP snapshot for garg (which should be 128.8 extra damage if you're specced into 5/5 Impurity) on top of a 5% extra damage. So even snapshotting gargoyle and with GCD going lower than 1 sec and no delay between casts, we could think that orc isn't actually far when it comes to garg damage from troll. Now, if spell GCD cap isn't actually a thing, the discussion to choose between Orc and Troll would go like this, tipping the balance more into the orc side: On progression with buffed HP bosses and fights lasting quite a lot orc will probably do better specially on AoE fights where you can one disease rotation with pestilence and DnD with Blood fury. Now, if the fights would last so little (let's say around 1m) that the gargoyle effect on your total DPS would still be massive then snapshotting Berserking into Gargoyle would still have to be tested due to the inconsistencies stated above. Now if all this shit worked like on Whitemane where the fucking Gargoyle was a fucking MG 42, go troll. But things won't be like that, the only matter of discussion is gargoyle being affected by spell gcd cap or not. Little tip into AMS usage (for whoever reads this)> if you know you're going to get a shitload of it you can do a DnD on the ground where the target is to open that free GCD to dump one extra DC once you get the RP.
RUGS!!!!!!!!! I need your help BRO!!!! I really want to roll a 2h frost DK(I know DW is more optimal) and have some questions about runes usage. The talent set up I want to run is 02/51/18, Basically UH sub set to get Blood-Caked Blade. The other talent set i was thinking is 13/51/7 to get Death Rune Mastery to make sure most of my runes are death runes (In my mind this seems like a good early expac build to make it easier to spam obliterate without worrying too much about what runes are up). I plan to roll Horde, so I'll be going Orc for the racials. Any tips would be appreciated, or even a small vid demonstrating rune usage on a target dumby. No, as frost you never go into Death Rune Mastery. If you wish to get as many Obliterates as possible which is 3x Obli. You go into the Unholy tree for epidemic (21 second diseases) which allows you to 3x obliterate without diseases falling off. In phase 1 and two you don’t take “Blood caked blows”. This is because early phase weapon dmg is trash and the Bloodsub with Dark convection and Bladed armor gives you too much value compared to minimal damage from blood caked blows in Phase 1. Alongside bloodsub giving you 2hand spec which would help with 2H frost. Depending on how talents are released, DW frost with full blood sub is confirmed optimal till around late Ulduar.
One question i have currently playing progress server t7 me and naother dk i always have WAY more gargoyle dmg better snapshots on it but he always beats me on frost fever damage and scourge strike. do note we have literaly the same gear and im pretty certain i do my rotation as flawless as possible. still always kinda weird to see he does way more frost fever damage while my gargoyle dmg shits on his

I think phase 4 could either split into a phase 4.5 with RS or just a full 5th phase

That all being said, I wouldn't be surprised if even with these changes that it's so close in output that it doesn't really matter, and your opener/melee uptime/snapshotting accuracy will be the primary deciding factor in an Unholy's DPS.
Just my own personal take, great video otherwise. My only gripe is that you could have recorded yourself performing the opener on a target dummy or something and possibly highlight when you have a prime snapshot moment to gargoyle. Possibly slowing down the recording at key moments when needed. The unholy DK opener sounds brutal to perform at first, but it really comes down to muscle memory after a handful of weeks.

Im playing retribution for tbc and i love the difficulty of twisting perfectly. and since they remove twisting in wotlk im not so keen on it. and thinking of unholy. it seems like unholy has abit of a skill cealing wich is what i want. is it something you would recomend?
Hey buddy I've played ret and I main unholy in many wotlk P servers. Ret is extremely fun and easy, you'll switch from seals depending if your aoe or single target. Unholy is all about keeping your diseases up and dumping your runic into death coils, It takes practice but it's very easy once you get it locked down.
Tailoring is a great choice, but playing around the proc can be a bit finicky at times. I'd still rate the raw flat stats from JC higher. Also be aware that tailoring is a dead profession for DKs in PVP if you plan on doing that, as you'd want +35 spell pen enchant on cloak instead.

This seems like a very beginner's guide to Unholy DK. You don't go over applications of glyph of pestilence. You don't even mention how you can use blood tap to get multiple death runes. You don't reference disease juggling. And you can literally just face the opposite direction instead of running out of melee when summoning gargoyle.

One question I have though is about Wandering plague. I've read and from my own (limited) testing, it seems that wandering plague has severely reduced impact on diseases spread by Pestilence. Wandering plague would have a 1s ICD and diseases spread by Pestilence tick at the same time = only 1 shot at proccing wandering plague but also only 1 proc if both ticks crit. Do you have any knowledge on this? I tend to play with glyph of disease e.g. so does that mean I cuck myself badly by using it?

Hey so I've played uh dk on quite a few pservers, was just wondering what you think of insane str pot over haste pot, had a guild leader who had me farm the recipe because he said it was more beneficial for me.
the haste pot is 100% better for the purposes of the snapshot on gargoyle. Insane strg is good, but mostly only good for really niche fights and burst windows of dmg. Even then, I'd still want to use haste pot on Unholy--I'd really only strength pot on Frost DK for fights like Hodir HM for example.

Great video, but I have some questions. Why do you take 3/3 Morbidity instead of 3/3 Outbreak, and why do you Scourge Strike before Blood Strike in your opening rotation? Should you not Blood Strike first to proc Desolation before you Scourge Strike? Thanks in advance.
Its ok guide for starters. But for end game have many flops. For glyphs you will use for ghoul, frost fever, and for pestilence, or you will miss 1 scourge strike and waste 1 gcd. Your dmg source will be from top to bottom from you melee, frost fever, blood plague, scourge strike and then death coil. If you play horde if you will chose orc. If you start near boss (LK for example) you opener will be blood strike for 5% dmg for all you attacks. PS Rugs your editing is amazing

We aren’t running glyph of disease so the disease damage snapshot isn’t being refreshed anyway. The unholy presence is WAAAAY better for gargoyle’s snapshot than for your opening disease snap

Hey, there are a few things that I actually don't completely agree on:
. Talents> You're not putting 3 points in outbreak while deciding to go for those 3 extra points on necrosis regardless of playing blood subspec or frost subspec. I've never seen any point (besides dual-weilding on unholy) in which 3/3 outbreak is less damage than 3/5 necrosis, if there's any point that would be on frost subspec.
It makes no sense to me not-to spec into outbreak with blood subspec given that Scourge Strike will probably be your hardest hitting ability paired up with melee on total numbers.
Also, speccing into Dirge looks awesome for a rotation performed on a dummy but it's not a must-take talent when you got a resto druid on your raid that's aware of how much value Revitalize brings up to the table (and even if Revitalize procs don't make up for it, when they generate on average 160 RP with full uptime on rejuv/WG in one entire minute, you get one free gcd for horn or even better rune tap+ bs). Opening those 1/2 extra dirge points could go into Necrosis for example (in the case of Outbreak being better) or 1/3; 2/3 outbreak.
.Glyphs> GoDD is amazing early on but starts decreasing it's value on endgame gear. If you were actually going for a glyph choice on endgame gear with 2+ targets to cleave GoIT and GoDnD will just do better due to the multiplicative effect on the amount of targets and GoTG would surpass GoDD due to the insane amount of Strenght you're actually getting at that point.
.The stats weights are from a specific point of gear? Arp has an exponential effect so the number should ramp up towards endgame thus changing the value. Also there are no stat weights when considering AoE in which crit is amazing for those kind of fights.
.The opener> DnD + Army was just a way to proc 2nd t10 bonus so it became popular; it gives 25 RP total but at the time of the pull you're on 14-15 RP. Of course it is great on any single target encounter but in the case you're opening with 2+ targets in which you can DnD it would be better to delay it.
Starting with IT is situational and definitely not the best way to open.
I'd add that on roleplay fights or those that you can sprint to the boss in les than one GCD the best opener would be BS>PS>IT. Not only because diseases carry on DiM's such as desolation but also Rage of Rivendare talent and potential trinket procs/effects like DMF: Greatness & Unholy Strength (Fallen crusader enchant). All of this being multiplicated by Wandering plague. It's worth to note that when you go for unholy presence over blood presence, althought your ghoul and garg get the 15% extra haste (garg snapshotting it) you're also loosing the 15% damage on diseases; UHP opener is good on some cases but also situational (reasons explained below).
It's always discussed wether if Troll or Orc are the better class choices for unholy but there's a thing that has been a subject of heated discussions back then:
GCD is 1.5 seconds on most cases while spell GCD cap can go lower up to 1 second. Gargoyle strike is a spell and thus GCD cap should be 1 second. Some people were saying that pets could go lower than that GCD; long story short> there were people that provided evidence that's not here nowadays (worldoflogs) and all that's left are forum discussions poiting that garg GCD was/wasn't affected by spell cap and thus your gargoyle can/can't do more than 27-28 casts on it's full 30-seconds duration (due to the summoning animation). Which version is the true one? We will find out (or maybe we'll never find out if they change shit) when WoTLK classic is released since we also got completely different coding within private servers (some having a boosted garg that can easily go over 30+ casts and some others in which you're stagnated in those 28 casts since naxx till ICC-RS)
Depending on which case is true (it happens to be some info about , some things could be completely useless. If the GCD cap is actually a thing and we take in count a BL opener with some amounts of haste (legit100 haste) + gloves anything that pushes gargoyle strike below 1 second is a waste and the 3 things stated above (on a raiding environment AKA with Imrpoved Icy talons, Icy talons and moonkin/ret on raid) cover the ''1 second cast gargoyle strike''. This basically means that Potion of Speed, Berserking and UHP on opener are actually useless. This is the main reason of why some things can't be spilled as the truth because we are currently lacking information to prove it, specially since world of logs shutted down.
As it was on retail, Gargoyle actually should have a downtime between casts (which most servers don't have coded) of about 0.3 seconds, which would bring the value of Berserking snapshotting lower. All of this w/o taking in count that orc provides 322 AP snapshot for garg (which should be 128.8 extra damage if you're specced into 5/5 Impurity) on top of a 5% extra damage. So even snapshotting gargoyle and with GCD going lower than 1 sec and no delay between casts, we could think that orc isn't actually far when it comes to garg damage from troll.
Now, if spell GCD cap isn't actually a thing, the discussion to choose between Orc and Troll would go like this, tipping the balance more into the orc side:
On progression with buffed HP bosses and fights lasting quite a lot orc will probably do better specially on AoE fights where you can one disease rotation with pestilence and DnD with Blood fury. Now, if the fights would last so little (let's say around 1m) that the gargoyle effect on your total DPS would still be massive then snapshotting Berserking into Gargoyle would still have to be tested due to the inconsistencies stated above.
Now if all this shit worked like on Whitemane where the fucking Gargoyle was a fucking MG 42, go troll. But things won't be like that, the only matter of discussion is gargoyle being affected by spell gcd cap or not.
Little tip into AMS usage (for whoever reads this)> if you know you're going to get a shitload of it you can do a DnD on the ground where the target is to open that free GCD to dump one extra DC once you get the RP.

RUGS!!!!!!!!! I need your help BRO!!!! I really want to roll a 2h frost DK(I know DW is more optimal) and have some questions about runes usage. The talent set up I want to run is 02/51/18, Basically UH sub set to get Blood-Caked Blade. The other talent set i was thinking is 13/51/7 to get Death Rune Mastery to make sure most of my runes are death runes (In my mind this seems like a good early expac build to make it easier to spam obliterate without worrying too much about what runes are up). I plan to roll Horde, so I'll be going Orc for the racials. Any tips would be appreciated, or even a small vid demonstrating rune usage on a target dumby. No, as frost you never go into Death Rune Mastery.
If you wish to get as many Obliterates as possible which is 3x Obli. You go into the Unholy tree for epidemic (21 second diseases)
which allows you to 3x obliterate without diseases falling off.
In phase 1 and two you don’t take “Blood caked blows”. This is because early phase weapon dmg is trash and the Bloodsub with Dark convection and Bladed armor gives you too much value compared to minimal damage from blood caked blows in Phase 1.
Alongside bloodsub giving you 2hand spec which would help with 2H frost.
Depending on how talents are released, DW frost with full blood sub is confirmed optimal till around late Ulduar.
