One tip I would add... read it again. I appreciated it a lot more a second time, picking up on some of the foreshadowing and actions of minor characters that you don't realize are relevant the first time around.
Was just about to say this. It's funny that she mentions things like how hard it is to keep track of who is talking. I remember that being a big problem for me on first read but on rereading is not a problem at all. I almost was thinking was there something wrong with me the first time I read it what's hard? So yes, it is a book you must reread and you'll start picking up on the themes that you totally miss the first time. Also, what makes it great on the 2nd read is you understand that there are things that just aren't important to know. Herbert doesn't spell everything out and that is by design. You'll appreciate that more on subsequent reads. I remember being super annoyed the first time when he described a fight scene in the most passing words seemingly possible. Then when you read it again you realize that's be design and his style.

I haven’t finished a book in years, I always struggle with keeping characters and plot lines straight, and I especially struggle with inferring tone from text… plus, I’ve never ever read sci-fi. On paper, Dune should be my nightmare. Bought it on a whim because I’m a huge Villeneuve fan, I’m currently about 50 pages in and I’m obsessed. I actually get excited to sit down and read. I went back and read the physical book and it was even better. Great perspective Lisa... Only recommendation is to work on your mic audio quality.

Couldn’t agree more. When I first started reading Dune, I had no idea what was going on but I found myself being repeatedly sucked in to the storyline. Once you read a bit more and get a bit deeper, the meaning behind things you don’t understand at first are ultimately revealed after a bit (:
It would also help to take notes. I know its a bit time consuming but it really helped me keep track of the characters, character motivations, events. I wrote down questions like "why is this person doing this?". It's a bit like being back in my literature class but about the half way point I just naturally picked up on the story.

Great tips! Audiobook sounds awesome! I think something those of us who read a lot of sf/fantasy forget is how fantastical names/words can be for those note used to those genres!
Fantasy is hard for me because I am not a visual person at all. When I read LOTR, I just couldn't imagine the characters or the world which is probably one of the reasons that I found it such a chore to read. At least Dune has a movie trailer so I could see some of the characters and have more than a blank canvas to work from (and thus made the book more enjoyable to read). Thanks for watching and thanks for your video on Dune! It is such a great book!
I bought the first Dune book recently and was so excited to dive right in, but after having read the first couple of pages I felt so dumb and gave up. This video was so comforting to see that it’s not only me!!! I’ll definitely be trying again soon ❤️
Honestly this is one of my favorite books. Just finished it today and absolutely loved it. Loved the movie and loved the book. I really hope the second movie is just as good as the first. I’m excited to continue reading the series!!!
As far as pronouncing words correctly. When all parties learned the words by reading them you will find differents schools on how to pronounce them. Some dont even like how Frank Herbert himself pronounced them. As a spanish speaker, any word I read that I dont understand how to say in english right away i will read it in spanish. It is always fun thing to talk about when discussing the books.
I was fortunate to have read the first 2 books in “The Book of the New Sun” series before reading Dune. This trained my brain to deal with complex concepts in sci-fantasy, in turn making Dune a really enjoyable experience the first time around. Definitely looking forward to reading it again.
I just recently bought that book in a box set that includes it as well as the two sequels Dune: Messiah and Children of Dune. I love the cover art. I read them once before and I intend to read them again. I hope you’ve enjoyed that franchise.
How could anyone struggle to read this? The world building is so immersive, completely drawing someone in. I first read it in a day, hardly able to put it down
I must be the only person who wasn't lost or confused on page one. Lol. I understood it immediately, and it's become one of my, if not favorite, book. I'll probably reread this book a few times. Its great.
I discovered Dune in 1989, never looked back.. I have read the original 6 books dozens of times. It's one of my favorite series. I've tried reading the son's books, couldn't do it. However, the originals are amazing!
This made me smile! The second book in the series is pretty high in my TBR. It has some very tall shoes to fill so fingers crossed it is just as good as the first book!
Hi ! Just a question that's bothering me.. Should we read all 6 books to get the whole plot. Is it like we should read all Harry Potter's 8 books to complete the series? And is the movie released in 2020 gonna adapt all 6 books? Idk anything about the book and I'm really excited to read it. But this question is bothering me a lot and I just wanted to know some thoughts about it. Would be great if shed some light on it! Thank you!!
I love this book and re-read it every couple of years. The first copy I read I got from my Junior High library, I would have been 13 or 14, around the same age as Paul. At that young age I was used to knowing nothing so I was not surprised that I didn’t initially understand what was going on so I just kept reading confident that I would learn as the story progressed. I remember being blown away by the time scale and the richness of the story’s cultural history. It’s a fabulous series.
Thank you for this video! I have it ready to go but have been putting it off because it is so intimidating. I will absolutely use some of your tips. I can't justify using an audible credit though since I have the actual paper book, although it sounds awesome. So good to know about the guides in the book. Determined to read it before the end of the year!
I've read the first two books (Dune and Dune Messiah) in 1 and a half weeks! Never been so gripped by a book before! Decided to take a break from reading ahead to gather my thoughts...definitely will read through to the end of the saga!
First time readers should accept that it could be an awkward read for them. That’s to be expected. It’s a fantasy story set 20,000 years in a space-faring future. They shouldn’t be to hard on themselves. Some of the words and concepts introduced early will be explained overtime… some concepts aren’t explained at all… Dune has a lot of supplementary history that isn’t explained in the story, but is discussed in the appendices that follow the novel. I can definitely see why some people think A Song of Ice and Fire was inspired by this book.
Thanks this was a good watch. I bought my copy today at target. The movie trailer has me very interested so I want to read the book prior to the movie coming out. Also just wanted to say I think it’s awesome one of the first peoples review of this book lives so close! My wife and I both work in Troy and live in one town over!
I've read the whole series several times. I find it difficult to set the books down. They're absolutely spellbinding. I can't imagine needing help to get through it.
The reunion between the Baron, his cousin, and Piter IS the responsible for making a lot of people drop it, I'm sure I remember I read the epub, and the first time I run through all that politicial drama on this reunion, I HAD to look for a picture of the planets and universe. And they don't say the main cast comes from Caldan at first
Okay so i just read the first 27 pages is the reunion you are talking about our first encounter of the baron ? Because I struggle to understand everything in their conversation 😂
I just started it a few days ago and I'm probably 20'ish pages in. Even though I've finished quite a few trilogies and other fantasy books, I feel completely lost with this one. Glad to know I haven't been the only one
I had a similar experience reading the speak trilogy by William Gibson. You’re thrown head first into this world with little explanation, and slowly it all begins to make sense. Hopefully it will be as rewarding to read dune as it was for me reading neuromancer
Even dialogues are smart spiritual adavaita zen u name it …it literally explores determinism how even if we see something coming we still have to go through it just like movie arrival ..very similiar
Your tips are well thought out. You have compassion for the reader and appreciate the effort it takes to enjoy/read the book. My tip is to reduce the plot to its lowest terms so no one is lost. Imagine most of the people on Earth are addicted to a drug only found in the Sahara and all nations are fighting for their share. Desert guerrillas control it and in the middle of this struggle a genetically-engineered messiah shows up early and tips over everything. Ta-da. (Expand this to the size of the galaxy and you see why multiple books are needed._ Enjoy)
That first chapter can really be brutal... but it's actually what drew me in. That first chapter conveys this idea of a completely fleshed out world with eons of history behind it's religions, politics, planets, languages... and that idea always excites me. And Dune did not disappoint in that regard at all. It has long been tied with Lord of the Rings for my favorite series of books. They are both considered the grandfathers of their genres. And both excel at world building. Dune just chucks you into the deep end and laughs at you while you try to learn how to swim. :Dz As to the prequel... there are 3 trilogies that make up the prequel... so 9 books there, plus the 6 of dune. Plus there are a book each for the schools of dune. Plus there are more books. :D

@@dharunbharathis3597 So, movie 1 covers about the 1st half of book 1. Movie 2 will cover the 2nd half. And movie 3 will cover book 2 (it's a pretty short book). There is an underlying theme to those 2 books (3 films) that ties up nicely. However, the story does continue on past book 2 in a very fluid and connected way. All 6 books are incredible reads and by the end you feel like you've lived in this universe for thousands of years. Countless worlds, peoples, cultures, customs, religions, etc. All tied together beautifully. I always recommend reading them. And after that you can read the books written by Brian Herbert from Frank's notes. Details going back that show the start of the feud between the houses, the start of the great schools (Navigators, Mentats, Sisterhood). You get Duncan's backstory and so much more. I promise, they are all great reads.
wait right here, I just started read Dune two days ago, this is the coolest video about this I have seen, specially tip 7. tell us more about what you think about this book thanks for such a kind video hugs from Buenos Aires!
i felt this way with soiaf. the thousands of characters with difficult names made it unnesesarily complex. Dune, however, really clicked for me.great read
Thanks! I bought that version of the book a while back but kind of gave up/ forgot about it. But I really want to read it so I hope these tips will help. I think the audiobook idea might help me the best, that and maybe the glossary. I'll try to take notes/sticky notes too, that helped me in school while reading books, so it stands to reason it'll help here.
Something that helped me a lot is, that after the first two chapters, (yep i was lost too 😅) i have read the back section of it. It was a much easier read after that, and now i just love it!
One of the things that I have noticed is that I have an extremely difficult time imagining the things that the author describes. If you put out 3 dominos and ask me to memorize their location and I study the dominos for a few minutes and remove them, I could not tell you where to put the dominos - I have a very difficult time with visualizing space. A few pictures or video clips go a very long way with me!
I’ve wanted to read this book for a long time. Finally got around to it. I got a few chapters into it before I accidentally came across that additional stuff in the back of the book. Then the beginning started to make sense.
The first time I read the first book I was 17 now am 59 and have lost count how many times I have read the first 4 books. Not lost from first page the first time around.
Tip #4 is the one that helped me tremendously! If you're copy of Dune doesn't have the appendixes or doesn't have the terminology, Google it and keep that tab open at all times. Refer to it immediately when you come across a new term. This will save you time and frustration because you will know what is going on and you will enjoy the read because you will be enlightened by the purpose and depth.
I appreciate your tips. Some of the book's fans, and sci-fi fans in general, can get fan-atical. After all, an adolescent male is the protagonist and the book is geared towards that audience. Good to see women getting into the discussion.
im in my first hundred pages and its so interesting but it feels like i keep on missing things as I often feel confused at certain points, im definitely going to have to read it again
It’s important to note, voice actors don’t always know how to pronounce the words either. Roy Dotrice mispronounced Brienne’s name all through A Song of Ice and Fire (GoT) and it bothered me every time.
Also pro tip: if you like a particular pronunciation for smth, but you’re worried it’s “wrong” or ppl will feel you’re silly for it, you really don’t need to worry about that tbh. While there are the ways that Frank Herbert “officially” pronounced them, he didn’t really care, and also basically every Dune Fan has their own preference about it. If anything, that’s kinda part of the fun about talking to other Dune Fans honestly. Also whatever you do, do not read any of the books that aren’t written by Frank Herbert. The Brian Herbert prequels/sequels/miscellanea are so much worse
Oh and less a tip but more a warning: God Emperor of Dune, like. Definitely read it if you think you can get through it but understand that like. If you’re at the level where reading the first book has become manageable for you, God Emperor will be as overwhelming and confusing as your first readthrough of Dune was. And if you’re not at that level yet… it’s going to be tough. It is basically hundreds of pages of an omniscient worm god person just talking about philosophy and human nature and history nonstop but in an extremely “Dune Way”. There is also essentially none of the action or pacing that kept the earlier ones moving. Also some weird homophobia in one section, and a woman literally straight up nuts just from seeing a guy climb a cliff. Extremely worth it tho
That song is constantly in my head whenever I'm looking at anything Dune related. Used to sing along to the lyrics without knowing what they meant, lol.
Lisa, great video. I had never heard about Dune before, so thanks for the recommendation and explanation of where you struggled. I do, too with Fantasy Books, sometimes. Worth it to read on most of the time. I laughed, someone commented Why Read it? Just watch the movie trailer. Too funny. Imagine his house doesn’t need a new bookcase like mine. Anyway, thanks so much. Will add it to my TBR list. Love your reviews. 📚
I am diving into this book this year! Excited to read it, great tip with the audiobook companion also! - I must not fear, fear is the mind killer, once the fear is gone, only I will remain.

started the book yesterday and put it down almost immediately but I still wanted to read it the audiobook tip really helped! now I cant put the book down!
I really like the Amazon doing audiobook, but I did find a confusing that sometimes the actors read for their character and then the rest of the time the narrator read for their characters instead. I don’t understand why that was.
I listened and read along to the audio book for the first fifty pages or so. Also after reading various chunks I watched Comicbookgirl's book club videos to better understand the story. That helped me get into it
Yes! I also listened and followed along in the book. It was really helpful! I will have to check out Comicbookgirl videos. I think someone also mentioned them as well. I always love connecting with other Dune fans! Thanks for watching!
I wanted to develope a book reading habit and my stupid ass chose dune to be the first ever book I read because I was eager to watch the movie and I wanted to read the book before watching the movie. I am an intermediate in English proficiency but I felt like I started learning it yesterday. I have to use dictionary after 2-3 lines . But still going on finished 50 pages and still interested. To finish it
Does anyone use any specific color code to mark dune with post it? Wach color with a specific subject that should help in understanding the story... I'm going to start reading it for the first time and I confess that I'm a little lost with all the terms and topics 😂😔
My tip is use the glossary of terms at the back. What's a Gom Jabber look it up. I'm sure purists will look down on this, but I it helped my brain immensely.
One tip I would add... read it again. I appreciated it a lot more a second time, picking up on some of the foreshadowing and actions of minor characters that you don't realize are relevant the first time around.

I’m like 15 pages in and your tips are so helpful, thank you
Aw! Thank you! You are so welcome! I hope that you end up loving Dune by the end like I did!
@@LisaOfTroy I loved the second book as much as the first. If you love intrigue and tragedies it is excellent. It is not an epic as the first though.
I am the only person I know that prefers the last 2 books to the rest of the series. I love the portrayal of the BG, and the Honored Matres.
Comic book girl 19 has a Dune book club on RUclips. That helped me A lot!
I will have to check it out! Thanks for sharing!!!
@@LisaOfTroy plus the Dune Discord has a book club too, but not sure where they are now with it. You get there via r/dune
Thanks, Mel! Your words mean the world! Hope you enjoy reading Dune as much as I did! :)
@@LisaOfTroy Thanks, I’ll let you know! 😂
I just finished dune today and I couldn’t understand a lot and felt like a chore to read 😭 i wish I watched this video before
I've read the first two books (Dune and Dune Messiah) in 1 and a half weeks!
I really hope that you enjoy Dune as much as I did! It is great seeing other Michiganders in the book community!
I've read the whole series several times. I find it difficult to set the books down. They're absolutely spellbinding. I can't imagine needing help to get through it.
Amazon has all of the audiobooks. They help so much and the narrators are amazing.
So agree! In my version, it sounded like Robin Williams did one of the voices. Did anyone else think the same thing?
Where can we find the amazon audiobook??
The reunion between the Baron, his cousin, and Piter IS the responsible for making a lot of people drop it, I'm sure
I remember I read the epub, and the first time I run through all that politicial drama on this reunion, I HAD to look for a picture of the planets and universe. And they don't say the main cast comes from Caldan at first
That was exactly it for me reading the audiobook
Okay so i just read the first 27 pages is the reunion you are talking about our first encounter of the baron ? Because I struggle to understand everything in their conversation 😂
I just started it a few days ago and I'm probably 20'ish pages in. Even though I've finished quite a few trilogies and other fantasy books, I feel completely lost with this one. Glad to know I haven't been the only one
It helped me a lot to google any names or words i didnt quite understand. Just to keep track of people with a solid mental image of the character.
Great tips! Especially the one about going back and rereading!
The 1984 and 2000 films are pretty good. A bit cheesy but it makes it easier to understand the overall story
Never was frustrated reading it, just had to reread parts of it many times to try and understand what they meant
The old dune movie is on HBO Max it helps a lot to understand the book
Your tips are well thought out. You have compassion for the reader and appreciate the effort it takes to enjoy/read the book. My tip is to reduce the plot to its lowest
terms so no one is lost. Imagine most of the people on Earth are addicted to a drug only found in the Sahara and all nations are fighting for their share. Desert guerrillas
control it and in the middle of this struggle a genetically-engineered messiah shows up early and tips over everything. Ta-da. (Expand this to the size of the galaxy and
you see why multiple books are needed._ Enjoy)
I'm glad you liked it. Welcome to the Landstraad.
I had trouble reading Dune before but I’m going to try again! Thank you for the advice :)
:Dz
As to the prequel... there are 3 trilogies that make up the prequel... so 9 books there, plus the 6 of dune. Plus there are a book each for the schools of dune. Plus there are more books. :D
Hi ! Just a question that's bothering me.. Should we read all 6 books to get the whole plot. Is it like we should read all Harry Potter's 8 books to complete the series? And is the movie released in 2020 gonna adapt all 6 books?

@@dharunbharathis3597 I’m a year late but yeah read all 6 books.
wait right here, I just started read Dune two days ago, this is the coolest video about this I have seen, specially tip 7.
tell us more about what you think about this book thanks for such a kind video
hugs from Buenos Aires!
i felt this way with soiaf. the thousands of characters with difficult names made it unnesesarily complex.
Omg... I literally made a REALISTIC plan for myself to read this book... I was planning on reading it on a two month span... this woman said 1 week.
Something that helped me a lot is, that after the first two chapters, (yep i was lost too 😅) i have read the back section of it. It was a much easier read after that, and now i just love it!
I found Dune pretty easy to read, but thats just me, I get your feelings tho,and its how I felt reading Neurmancer...so I can relate
@@LisaOfTroy definitely can relate to that. And it comes so easy to others!
I’ve wanted to read this book for a long time. Finally got around to it. I got a few chapters into it before I accidentally came across that additional stuff in the back of the book. Then the beginning started to make sense.
Very helpful, thank you, this gave me the motivation to purchase it
Glad to hear it! It is a great book! Thanks for watching!
I'm going to be reading this book after the new year! Thanks for the tips 😊
I first read Dune when I had just graduated from high school
Watch the movies, listen to audiobook, never try to read it. Then you're good.
I appreciate your tips. Some of the book's fans, and sci-fi fans in general, can get fan-atical. After all, an adolescent male is the protagonist and the book is geared towards that audience. Good to see women getting into the discussion.
I'm halfway through and it's the most amazing book I've ever read.
im in my first hundred pages and its so interesting but it feels like i keep on missing things as I often feel confused at certain points, im definitely going to have to read it again
The audiobook tip is legit. I probably wont read the hardcovers coz i don't read a lot. I am enjoying the audiobooks thoroughly
It’s important to note, voice actors don’t always know how to pronounce the words either. Roy Dotrice mispronounced Brienne’s name all through A Song of Ice and Fire (GoT) and it bothered me every time.
Man, this is super helpful. Thank you.
I bought the book last year, this same edition and it's been rough. Can't get through it. Will give it another try
I'd highly suggest to listen to a song called "To Tame a Land" by Iron Maiden and you will get an idea about what this book is about.
Use that glossary! I read the book in the days before audio-books!
I am diving into this book this year! Excited to read it, great tip with the audiobook companion also!
- I must not fear, fear is the mind killer, once the fear is gone, only I will remain.

I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one who is struggling/ struggled while reading dune 😅
Random question- did you finish reading the book?
@@thepaperninja3123 no not yet. I’m almost at the third part, The prophet. Why?
@@pineapplepanda5582 nothing I was just curious how long it takes to complete the book.

Should I watch the film first ? And I have. I idea what to expect as I have never read this book. Awesome video!
I just starting reading it today. Thanks for the tips. I kinda affraid that i'll give up like reading war & peace by leo tolstoy after 200 pages.
started the book yesterday and put it down almost immediately but I still wanted to read it the audiobook tip really helped! now I cant put the book down!
Glad you are enjoying it! The audiobook really made the difference for me, too!
Thank you! I just saw the 1984 movie, bought the whole collection, and I'm ready to start reading them.
Loved your video!
Awesome! Thank you! Hope you enjoy Dune!
That's what I did back in the 1980s. I'm now awaiting the new film hoping that it's good and that the rest of the books become films.
I really like the Amazon doing audiobook, but I did find a confusing that sometimes the actors read for their character and then the rest of the time the narrator read for their characters instead. I don’t understand why that was.
Watched the movie yesterday and ordered the first book first thing when I got home haha
I tried to read this and I thought I was stupid but I guess that everyone has the problem with not knowing who was taking
ahhh okay I'm going for it
Did you finish? I am curious what you thought and if you had any tips to share. :) Thanks for watching!
I just couldn't get through chapter 1 so I just stopped reading. I'll give it another try
It's kind of sad how many readers let this or lord of things go over their heads. It's really not that complicated.
I honestly wonder at the content of this video. I read DUNE in my teens and had little trouble keeping track of its contents.
I try not to judge people, but I have to concur.
To finish it
Way to go! That is a great accomplishment, and I hope you enjoy the rest of the book as well! :)
How's going now !?
I suggest listening to the first Harry Potter book! It is fantastic and the narrator, Jim Dale, is one of the best.
Thanks for the good tips. ☺️
Did you forget writer's name?!
Thanks a lot !! It helped me a lot
one more tip! read the first Dune- Graphic Novel
Lisa of Troy. Love the channel's name.
