I experienced this with a flower shop white phalenopsis orchid before I knew it was even possible. It had 40-50 flowers in perfect condition all at the same time and was glorious! However, it went into rapid decline shortly after blooming and I lost the mother plant. Fortunately, the base of the stem produced 5 keikis that all survived. Two years later, two of them are blooming.
@@janvandeventer8101 A keiki is a baby plant. I’ve had them grow at the base of the plant or on the flower stalk. It can look like a flower stalk is emerging at first but then the leaves emerge. They can be removed and grown as new plants but only after sufficient roots have grown.
@@lindaannb When did your plant produce keiki,? I have a flower shop phal with 6 flower spikes that are still blooming but the plant is showing a rapid decline (6 leaves are yellow now and only 3 green left). I've heard it can produce keiki during blooming but I'm not confident with this one. Should I cut the spikes to save the plant?
@vy_ngkp I'm definitely not an expert, but I think I would cut the flower spikes to attempt to save the plant. The keikis on mine formed on the base after most of the leaves had yellowed and died. I left the remains of the stem there for a long time and cut back a bit on water. I figured, with no leaves, it wouldn't transpire very much.
Thank you so much for making this video! I’ve been wondering about the frequency of blooms on my phals. For the last three years, they’ve been blooming more and more often with more and more blooms. I thought it was fertilizer, but no, my home is just too cold. Now, they are constantly growing new spikes or blooming and not growing much vegetatively. This has led to spikes starting higher and higher up the stem, and now one has a terminal spike. I never thought 72F was too cold based on the info I’ve read, but with air conditioning, it’s the same temp all day long. I’ll have to do something to keep them warmer, or switch to colder growing species. I’m eyeing some draculas. P.S. I’m so happy to see that I have so many of the same phals as you!! ❤️ I just love you Danny! You’re such a wonderful person! Wishing you the best from Kentucky, USA
Hi there Danni, Your phalaenopsis blooms are amazing. Your flower shop, no ids are especially lovely. The colours are superb. Thanks for the advice. It's winter here in Australia and I have brought my phals inside until it warms up! 😁 Have a great day. 🐞
I think I have one of those. I was gifted a spectacular orchid with tall double spikes but it had root rot then was set back. Then it starts blooming again! I thought it would be a while after the set back. I’ll have to keep eye on that one
I witnessed it even with regret care because my environment is close to where orchids grow and they are more resilient or more drought tolerant. And in line with these type of orchids are native orchids in my area 😁😁
Yes it’s possible. I didn’t know and a few 😂bloomed themselves to death. A couple I loved the colour. I see them for sale. Out of my price maximum. I have faith that I will see them again. ❤ Carol
I started following your tutorials from last year with 1 orchid n now I m up to 15 with alot of joy. A job well done with passion. Keep up the excellent work.
Thank you for introducing me to orchids. It has brought me so much joy and I love that I get to share it with my students at the school where I teach. I have a question about keikis. I saw your videos on producing keikis on store bought Phals and have been able to produce a few with Keiki paste. Is this possible on summer blooming Phals? If it is, where would you apply the paste? I really love the pink Bellina and would love to get a keiki to share.
That’s exactly what mine are doing now! They’re growing more keikis after I removed and potted some and I really don’t know what to do other than continue potting the keikis xD
My mini new hope did that 😔, I was new to growing and stressed it until it thought it was dying, so it had 3 keikis that I removed, and then it started 2 more, and now it's at deaths door.
I have a giant phalaenopsis that is blooming profusely all the time. There’s a year old flower spike that bloomed then when done blooming had a secondary spike and when done blooming got another secondary spike while having a flower spike on the other side of the orchid. I’m worried about it. I may have to cut the spike that keeps producing. I think blooming once a year is enough but the flowers are gorgeous!
My Cattleyas bloom more often than my Phals and haven’t bloomed themselves to death, maybe you can address that in another video. After the Phalaenopsis produces the spike, it doesn’t cost any “energy” to maintain the flowers because at that point it isn’t growing.
Hi Danni, I was thrilled to find your videos! My orchids are not very happy. I am sending you photos of my latest sad orchid which has been dropped many times and I don’t know if I can bring her back this time.
Yes my phalaenopsis Summer Rose almost died until I cut off the spike. It was its first time blooming and just wasn't big enough to handle growing and blooming. I chose growing.
Hello Miss Orchide I have been following you for a while and have saved and grown my orchids with all your videos.I have a question 2 of my orchids have a lot of leaves but haven’t bloomed.Could you tell me what to do.Thank you very much and continue your good work.
Hello Danny I appreciate all the good information you provide. I purchased a couple mounted orchids and was wondering what is the best method to acclimate them to live in pots. My orchids are sedirea japonica and maxillaria tenuifolia. Thank you once again.
Yes mini phals are the worst for it! Or could say the best if you like lots of flowers... I usually chop off the spikes if they go on for more than 6 months these days... After I had a few that over taxed themselves.
I got one of those grocery store discounted phals in Feb, the kind with white flowers and yellow in the center, kind of a twinkle. She spent all her 3 spikes and I cut them, and at the same time as growing a leaf she started a new spike a couple weeks ago. I don't want to cut it bc she is doing well seems healthy and so I will keep unless she starts stressing but so far so good. I don't want her to grow any more spikes though bc this is at least the 4th 🤞
My grandma has about 10 orchids. They are in a terrible condition, most of them have root rot and are literally leafless (because of sunburn...). But all of them bloom even more then mine. I can't believe that everytime I see it.
Thanks for the explanation about flowerings. My problem is having only two to three flowers and not having a cluster of flowers. Why is that? Is it not feeding them to often? I have nice green roots. Thank you.🙏🙏🌺🌺
Hi, want to start by saying I truly appreciate your videos. One thing that I can't find anywhere on the internet is whether Phalaenopsis' can simply die of old age. Is this something you can answer. I got into growing orchids from my grandparents who had a whole greenhouse of multiple varieties. After they passed I took as many as I could. However, recently one of them, a catalaya died which I assumed was due to my house not being ideal for it. However, now one of the phalaenopsis' just lost its last leaf after a massive bloom (just one stem). This is the first time I've had anything like this happen with a phalaenopsis and I was wondering if it simply reached the end of its lifespan. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again
I had a gorgeous purple speckled phalenopsis with six flowers and four buds that was thriving! It was bulging out of its small pot so I re-potted it this morning into a 6" orchid pot and cut off a couple of dead, brown roots. While re-potting and repositioning the stake my arm snapped off the spike with all the flowers. Now I'm left with four buds and am heartbroken. How can we avoid those sensitive long, long stems that snap off easily. Also...when a spike with beautiful flowers breaks off can you put that in water and will it grow new roots to replant or it just dies? Thanks Danny for all your help. I knew nothing about orchids until I found your channel.
Are extra branches a bad thing off your main spike? I have 10 potential buds on the main spike, but also have two additional branches with buds starting. Should I trim them off?
And what do you do if you have bought a orchid and every single one of the eyes on the flower spike has branched into a new flower spike?? Should i cut them all just to be on the safe side and only leave the main bloom??
Hi Dani, Sharon here again. I can’t figure out how to send photos of my sad orchid. But basically both leaves have been broken. One of them a long time ago and had mended. But yesterday when I dropped her again her only second leaf was damaged. I put cinnamon on the breaks but I don’t know if I should just cut the leaf off and keep trying. The roots were unhealthy too so these accidents happened after I had repotted her. So this poor orchid has a lot of healing to do. I have 5 more also needing help. Do you have an email I could send photos to?.
Hi Danny, I have a mini phal called Kolibri Liberty White. It's been blooming for months and started off with 9 flower spikes! I have been cutting the spikes, one by one, when the blooms look tired hoping to repot and wait for new growth. But it's just sent up another flower spike! No new leaves! What do I do now? Keep feeding with the bloom formula, repot anyway.....? I've got a photo but can't figure out how to share it. Much love, Lennox
The reason because Phalaenopsis can bloom to death is because the type of infloresence, it is an indetermined infloresence, which means the flower spike can keep growing, i think the best example for this in orchids is the Epidendrum radicans or Prosteche cochleata which can be in bloom all year. (Sorry for the shity english). Your videos are great, , im waiting to see another african violet video.
I have lots of spikes but their only 2-3 inches. Haven't grown any for a month, the orchid itself is looking pretty limp and tired. Do I repot, and remove all the spikes??
I left this question on a very old video so I'll pose it again: I have a north facing window over my driveway with the next house some 60 feet away. This is an extremely bright area with the sun bouncing off the driveway but no sun shining directly into the room. Is this an adequate light source for an orchid? Thanks
It’s really hard to tell without being there, but it sounds great for orchids. I have mine under a simple led under counter light on a timer since I don’t have much natural light where I live, and they are doing fine. You can try it and see what they do. As long as they don’t get sunburnt

I love the orchid in this video with the roots standing straight up like antennas…so cute!

With my mini phaels I only allow three actively open flowers at a time. When a bud starts to pop open I remove one of the three already open flowers.

Dehydration I would say

Is it possible to get vanilla orchids?
My phaelanopsis orchids have bloomed so well over three years that they burnt themselves out. Those that didn't die look as though they will do.

I sent you a letter are you going to respond ?And also can you make a video on pollinating slipper orchids
Do you have links to scientific articles to document these amazing statements? I don’t think you have your facts straight.
