The odds of summoning a level 4 are 1/36. With those odds, a level 4 monster should have stats or effects that are virtually game breaking.

10 Months late to when this video dropped, but I've always loved the idea of DDM. My biggest issue with it is, like you said, it suffers from the same issue as early Yugioh: too many monsters are just trash. I've actually gotten kind of obsessed with DDM in the past couple weeks, and have been working on making custom content for the Tabletop Sim version, including a better table, with better pieces to the main DDM mod, and JP style cards. I was mostly planning to just use it for myself and friends, but if there are people out there who wanna check it out, I'm down to share what I've gotten done so far.

This game is fun if you can find a second player, otherwise it's quite the slog against the computer (too many opponents with such a small dice pool, not much room for variety in those super long matches). DDM is a solid concept that has the potential to be something truly enjoyable. It deserves to be more than that one thing Duke Devlin is remembered for. Also DMG being so difficult to obtain is a crime against people that like to 100% games.

  • @lpfan4491
    @lpfan4491 Год назад +15

The genuinely most fun part is how they just sorta took everyone from the early days of the story they could think of and just pushed them in there, even if it makes absolutely no sense. Even better being that the localization decided to go completely off the rails at points because these guys didn't have dub names and the manga was more niche. They renamed Ushio(The guy from the very start of every version that beat up Joey, Yugi and Tristan and that will be called Trudge in localized media from 5DS onwards) to Demitrius of all things, which is just so funny to me for some reason. Even if I like "Jackpot" and "Director Lucius" more than the generic "Escaped Prisoner" and "ZTV Director" respectively, it was still so unnessesary to change any of these, why do it?

    • @gameboylad
      @gameboylad  Год назад +1

Yeah at the time I wasn't entirely sure who most of the characters were in this game but late in the editing I figured that they were early day manga characters. I remembered the Bruce Lee knock off in pre card game ygo and saw him in the ui while editing

    • @THEGRUMPTRUCK
      @THEGRUMPTRUCK Год назад +1

I find it both funny and also really neat that Ushio, literally just a background character in Duel Monsters that only existed to explain why Joey and Tristan (Jounochi and Honda) have such a strong bond with Yugi eventually was briefly mentioned in GX as one of the people who disappeared after losing to a Trueman and then became Trudge in 5D's where he has significantly more impact two whole series' after his initial appearance. What a legend.

I tried it again and didn't even last 15 minutes of playing. There's a lot of problems with DDM but there's also some interesting attemps to play.
1.- Some people here on Mexico have a bussines creating oricas, proxy, custom playmats and merchandise for YGO, they're Gaia Oricards and recreated all of the cards of the board game (plus most of the videogame and some extras) and sell them for... like 100 dollars i guess. It's a easy (and cheaper) way to get all cards for the game.
2.- The figures are really hard to get so I'm making my own ones at a different scale (Galactic Heroes and Super Hero Squad figures), also i heard about someone who was using a 3D printer and sell figures (but they're also expensive, like... 10 dollars each one, my production cost for each figure is like 1 or 2 dollars but it's more an extremly limited artistic process).
3.- There's a facebook group but... most of the people there are just for collecting. Sometimes I upload custom cards (like Dark Scorpions or Traptrix), people share their progress with 3D painting dungeon paths, rule FAQ and updatesetc. Some days ago there was a question about the viability of a tournamente, and there was like...50 votes (most of them from USA, next UK, on third place México with 5 guys, etc.).
The videogame sucks but it's really interesting at times, you can just play a LV1 pool and rush your opponent (there's a speedrun using only Beaver Warrior, Penguin Soldier and Ryu Kishin, or use Mammoth Graveyard because it's tunnel hability), I use only LV 2 and 4 die with interesting effects (like Giant Soldier of Stone to remove shelled ground tokens, Feral Imp to negate flying ability, the extremly broken Blast Lizard to insta kill monsters, Twin Swords Knight to move quickly, etc.).
The game has a lot of issues (the three rulesets fot the videogame, the american board game and the japanese one, the unbalanced mechanics, Blast Lizard, unxeploit mechanics like Shelled Ground Tokens, etc.) but it's really fun to play with friends and it has a lot of potential (like the reborn project, custom cards that sometimes I make like the Dark Scorpion, the Traptrix and the Hero, etc.). It just needs some more love.

    • @gameboylad
      @gameboylad  2 года назад +2

These are the kind of comments I love to read honestly. I wish the game put me in a position to talk about some of the nonsense dice in the game and more gameplay theories but the CPU is so bad at this game. I was only able to explore a bit playing 2 games with a friend. I only found out recently that USA rules didn't allow copies of the same dice in the pool where in japan (this game is also based on the japan rules) there is no limit which is insane. On one hand DDM is like a genuine idea that was an idea before the trend of figure collecting became big. But Konami handled it as if it was just a trend.

This game (and especially board game) was such a missed opportunity. It was released in a time period where it had no chance at all to be financially successful given how popular TCGs were becoming, and it sucks, because the game is really cool conceptually and there's basically no good way to play it nowadays. Great video as always! Looking forward to the next one!

Saying it in the comments as well but once again my bad on the late video. The holidays were pure chaos and moving right before hand was stressful. Expect videos to come out a lot more often and consistent. 2 to 3 weeks per video give or take. Also let me correct a small mistake I made. So the Japanese rules of DDM you need 15 Dice. In America you only need 10 to 12 I think? It's still a lot for a start & very stupid for Japans and Americas rules to be so widely different. Also I didn't mention that the music is absolute dick on the ground in this game LMAO.

Man. All of this is making me realize just how bad Konami is at tabletop/card game design. Like I always figured Yu Gi Oh's issues were due to it being designed by someone who liked card games but wasn't a designer and Konami having to work with what the manga set up. But here they've got something comparatively fresh, and... it's awful. Nothing about the established groundwork requires this kind of bad balancing, with so many chaff/jank card- er, dice. The physical game has issues based on having so much actual physical stuff but a video game version should alleviate that (rolling the dice, spreading out the dice, price of dice, etc) and yet it sounds so poorly balanced. That sucks.

Sometimes you get a extra duel with Yami Yugi at the end, it must be like "beat the last tournament 3 times" or something. But I actually never managed to complete the Free Duel roster, since the only way to fight each character is randomly through the tournaments, which is another downside for sure. Much like the failed Pokémon Trading figure game, it’s incredibly difficult to market figure collecting games to kids because of their significant price to entry, not to mention all the loose pieces that would make it really hard for kids to take to school or clubs, it makes sense why it just didn’t catch on like the card game. Most modern figure based games are marketed as more expensive premium items, aimed at an older audience, so maybe the nostalgic Yugi boomers with their own income would be more into it nowadays.
Honestly DDM and CapuMon would work amazingly as modern video games, just put it up on Mobile, Steam and Switch and I could totally see a community forming around it. I really hope Konami gives those games a second chance.

not a modder, but after watching this video, i find it absurd that konami hasn't figured out a way to make this game availible to the masses. with the success of master duel, the methodology paved out by warhammer-type games, the ability of simulators to be made for just about anything, and the fact that the entire template of the game is literally sitting there ready to be reworked into a tighter package (to say nothing of the absolutely MASSIVE pool of cards they can pull inspiration from), i can't fathom why konami hasn't even remotely dipped their toes back into DDS,
Seriously, two dedicated fans, a reasonably skilled coder, and one long weekend would be all it takes to make a complete rework of this game that's balanced from the ground up for longevity. hell, i'm fairly sure i could do the mechanic tweaks, monster balancing, pretty much everything bar coding, solo given sufficient time...
matter of fact, i'm gonna try it, and post what i come up with below. 99% sure i can make a game that fits the modern card game, covering monster types, spells, traps, and extra spice mechanics so long as i have enough time to type it up.
edit: have a template set, but gonna be a bit before i can finish, i have yet to get a proper weekend break, so i've been working on it in increments.

Yeah, I finished the skeleton structure, but as far as monster templates, i really couldn't figure out what monsters i wanted to place into the first set. that said, i'm placing the redo here, and wandering about online to see where i can drop it off to gain traction.
      Dungeon dice monsters revamp.
      Design inspiration and design goals
This is a document to create an updated model of Dungeon dice monsters. the rules of the original game will be the basis, taking inspirations from the japanese, english, manga, and video game rules to create the core template, with some minor inclusions from games such as forbidden memories, to allow for additional strategy/interaction. the adjustments will be designed to allow for more game stability, aiming for futureproofing against too much powercreep, by outlining design philosophy of the monster, spell, and trap crests.
The game sections will be broken down as such:
      1. Beginning of Game rounds, and board configuration/setup.
      2. Gameplay & Turn Phases
      3. Abilities/Traits
      4. Monster types and Guardian Stars
      5. Item dice
      6. Design philosophy
*1) Beginning of Game rounds, and board configuration/setup*
⦁ Each game is a best 2 of 3, or best of 1 as players like.
⦁ The board is 13x19, but can be adjusted to suit the game.
⦁ Each player chooses 12-15 dice to create their dice pool at the beginning of a round. Players may not have more than 2 level 5 Dice, 3 Level 4 dice, and no more than 2 of any individual monster in their pool of 12-15 dice. Besides this, die and monster will not be tied together like in the gba version, outside of needing the appropriate level to roll a monster. One may choose however many level 1 and 2 monsters they like.
⦁ Between rounds, if playing more than 1, each player may adjust their dice pool as they like within the bounds of selection rules, but must retain the same number of dice that they began the first round with for the game (if you start with 12, you must stay with 12, if you start with 14, you must stay with 14, and so on).
⦁ Each player then chooses their monster lord, and sets their guardian star. players may then select a monster lord crest to place within their guardian.
⦁ the starting player is then chosen (if multiple rounds are conducted, the losing player selects the game order), and the game begins.
      *2) Gameplay & Turn Phases*
At the beginning of the game, each player chooses 3 dice to begin rolling with. Dice are replenished from the dice pool, until a player has 3 to roll with at the beginning of each of their turns. The phases are: _Dice roll - Movement 1- Combat - Movement 2 - End phase,_ players can go back and forth between movement and combat, so long as you have available movement/attack crests. if you have no attack crests, you cannot enter combat and the same goes for movement. When exiting combat, if you have no movement crests, you must move to the End phase instead of a movement phase.
⦁ Dice roll Phase - Crest rolls, Summoning, and storage
Crest rolls: In the dice roll phase, the turn player may roll their 3 dice up to two times, Upon rolling, the player may choose to store their crests into the crest pool (all crests aside from summon crests can be stored) and roll again, to gain additional crests. if the turn player summons with their first roll, they may not replenish dice between rolls, and their second roll may only be conducted with the remaining dice. they still keep any resulting crests.
Summoning: If a player rolls two or more summoning crests of the same level, they may summon one monster of that level to the board from the rolled dice pool, if a player roll results in 3 crests of the same level, they may summon a monster 1 rank higher than the rolled crest from their rolled dice, or may summon any monster of that result level from their remaining dice pool, upon summoning, the dice used to summon is removed from the game, a 6 tile layout called a "plane" ("dimension" in the og version, can be adjusted to avoid lawsuits from WotC) is placed upon the board connected to your currently placed tiles, and 1 movement crest is added to the crest pool.
Storage: Crests That are stored are maintained in an area visible to both players. this may not matter as much in a virtual setting, but may come up if the game is ever physically implemented, so i thought i'd put it down here.
⦁ Movement 1-2 - Movement rules, crest usage
In the movement phase, movement crests are spent to set monsters along the available paths, 1 movement crest=1 tile moved. Up to 6 movement crests can be spent per turn, with each monster being movable a maximum of 3 times per turn (outside of effects). Opposing monsters cannot move past each other without specialized abilities or traits.
⦁ Combat - combat rules, crest usage,
Each attack costs 1 attack crest, and each monster can only attack 1 time per turn. monsters attacks are based upon attack range, abilities, traits, and effects in play.
In combat, attacking monsters damage values are determined based upon the ATK value subtracted from the HP, if a player has any defense crests available, they can use them to subtract their defense value from the ATK of the attacking monster. if a monsters' HP is reduced to 0, they are destroyed. if a monster has higher defense than the attacking monster, the upon using a defense crest, the remaining defense is subtracted from the attacking monsters HP.
In combat with a monster lord, the monster lords' attacks cannot be defended against, and monster lords only take 1 damage from any attacks. monster lords may be immobile, but they can resolve any designated monster lord traps or spells that they are equipped with.
      ⦁ End phase
During the end phase, any effects that resolve during the end phase now resolve, and any effects that last until the end of the current turn disappear.
      (...end of part 1)

    • @vla1ne
      @vla1ne Год назад

      (part 2:)
      3) Abilities/Traits
Monsters in this game come with abilities and traits that change how combat and movement may play out. there are several traits, and a large number of effects in the game, but starting with traits:
      ⦁ Traits:
there are a set number of traits that exist on monsters: *Flying, Burrow, Diver, Far Strike, Penetrator, and Armor.*
Flying, Burrow and Diver allow monsters to freely move across obstacles, while also preventing them from being attacked by creatures that lack the appropriate traits (flying can be attacked by flying and far reach, while burrow and diver can be attacked by the same respective trait, or by penetrator).
Far strike and penetrator don't allow more movement options, but they allow monsters to attack creatures that possess flying (Far reach) and burrow/diver (penetrator). penetrator allows monsters to gain an additional 10 atk for each rank (so +10 for rank 1, +30 for rank 3, ect) while far reach allows monsters to attack across an additional space and through monsters.
Armor allows creatures to defend without using crests, and adds an additional +10 def for each rank similar to how penetrator does for atk.
      ⦁ Abilities
similar to effects in yugioh, abilities are effects that monsters grant while present. there is a limitless number of effects possible, but just like the card game, if there is a discrepancy between the rules of the game and the effects of the monster, the monster effect will tend to take priority.
      4) Monster types and Guardian Stars
While the game is tied to yugioh, the monster types for the same monsters may differ from the original types.
The attributes in this game are the same base 7: EARTH, FIRE, WIND, WATER, LIGHT, DARK, AND DIVINE. there are effects in game that grant bonuses and demerits accordingly.
The types in this game are : *_Creator-God, Divine Beast, Pyro, Aqua, thunder, rock, plant, beast, reptile, beast warrior, winged beast, dinosaur, dragon, fairy, fiend, wyrm, machine, cyberse, zombie, spellcaster, warrior, illusionist, psychic, insect, fish, sea serpent, and reptile._* same as the attributes, effects in game may grant bonuses and demerits accordingly.
      Guardian stars
guardian stars are an optional feature in dungeon dice monsters. the game can be played with or without guardian stars. but in chase you choose to play with them, this is how they work:
Monsters come with two inherent "Guardian Star" typings. these alignments are taken directly from cosmic bodies and are arranged as follows (> means "is superior to"):
      Mercury > Sun > Moon > Venus > Mercury
      Mars > Jupiter > Saturn > Uranus > Pluto > Neptune > Mars
While monsters have inherent guardian stars, the monster lord is allowed to select any guardian star at the beginning of the game, and upon summoning monsters, the summoning player is allowed to choose whether or not they will place their summoned monster under one of its' own guardian stars, or under the chosen star of their monster lord.
when a monster battles an opposing monster, compare the guardian stars, if the guardian stars are comparable, then the monster with the winning sign is granted +10 to all stats except hp for that battle. no effect is applied if the signs have no winning comparison.
      5) Item dice /Black dice
Black dice are dice with 0 monsters on them. they are effectively item dice, that have multiple effects when rolled. you can have up to 5 item dice in the pool, and until you have had at least 1 monster on the playing field aside from the dungeon lord, you cannot roll any item dice.
crests attained from item dice go into the crest pool, while dice effects must be used on the spot, or simply vanish with no effect. Item dice effects can sometimes change the terrain, and on rare occasions, even more drastically, influence their affected area.
when rolling an item die, the number within the die determines how many of that result must be present to gain the effect displayed by the die. oftentimes, the higher the number, the more powerful the effect.
      6) Design philosophy.
Monster design guidelines are present to maintain stability, without creating too much power creep. for example, for lower rank dice, the goal would be to not create creatures that invalidate higher rank monsters, and for higher rank dice, the goal would be to create monsters that are worth using, if nor for their stats, then for their outside effects.
guardian stars is an aspect included to add an additional layer to the game based upon older games, and is only there for those interested. it's a way of adding bonus power to weaker monsters in scenarios where they need it, or even reinforcing the lead that strong monsters may have should the opponents' board be poorly compatible. even as a mere +10, it can help prevent monsters from being overrun by effects like penetrator and armor,
For the item dice, the goal would be to give each die complimentary effects, while making adjustments to each overall die effect, according to how powerful the best and worst effects on the die are.
overall, i want the game to be capable of resisting powercreep for even longer than games like magic and yugioh have, with controlled releases for proper testing. i want the focus to be on interesting effects, and proper managing of resources in ways that allow for the games to be more engaging overall.

and that's about it. i have way more that i want to type, like my plans for the templates of monsers, and what monsters i would release first to establish the game (obvious DM monsters aside, i'd pick most flagship monsters to be level 3s', and a number of the more recognizable monsters for the early numbers to pull people in) but holy hell do i lack time these days.

Since you say at the end you're looking into non-Yugioh TCG games I want to highlight a game called Hex:Shards of fate. It was a digital only MTG clone that had a fantastic single player mode. Unfortunately it was tied to their servers, so the game is no longer playable, but if there's any way it can be played again it would be a great example of the untapped potential of Digital only card games.
In the single player mode you had an RPG talent tree layered over the card game so you could get exclusive cards for your class added to your deck, start with minor boons in play or get bonuses for playing certain types of cards. I still fondly remember the rabit cleric deck that worked by spamming the board with 0/1s that I could then buff to overwhelm the opponent.

My modified rules were real simple. Build your team like normal but don't build any of the the board except for one 7 sided piece and one hero to use as your boss which if it goes down you loose. You use 2 D6 dice. 2 1's or 6's gets you a one squad or hero part of your team. A roll of 3 or 11 get you 7 sided piece . A roll of 4 or 10 gets a 3 sided piece. 5,6,8 or 9 gets a 2 sided piece and 7 gets a 1 hex piece. All pieces rolled can be replaced with an equivalent number of water/lava/snow/ etc terrain instead of the usual terrain styles. After that try to reach your opponent and k.o. his boss. Battles follow Heroscape rules and use their dice. It worked. A player having trouble pulling out their team might build defenses. An aggressive player will got straight for kill.

And yes, you can still spam level 1 monsters, but that doesn’t work against Kaiba spamming blue-eyes. I loved it but the game is definitely a grind, and you definitely need all the crest so you can alter your pool accordingly to cater towards the opponent. @@gameboylad I feel that. I definitely feel like It suffers from a lack of innovation. I wish they would have tried to stick with it, and did a few FAQ. Some of the monsters also didn't get ported right into the game. Jinzo has an ability that destroys all of your opponent's trap Crest when it etbs.

Didn’t DDM recently have a new version come out or am I thinking of a Capsule Monsters thing? I swear there was some short lived hype pre-COVID about some Yugioh flavored dice game. I saw it at several of my favorite gaming stores and I feel like I remember seeing people playing it once or twice and talking about how popular it had gotten.

God, I wish I could have played the actual dice game. I watched the anime episodes that showed the game off, and I thought it looked awesome! I just couldn't afford to buy them.
If I can get a 3D printer, I'm going to try printing miniatures based on the monsters, and make cards to go along with them. I have a wet erase mat for D&D, so all I need is a couple of markers to highlight the squares for the paths. Getting custom or blank dice shouldn't be too hard, so there's a way to make that work.
Would love to adapt some of my favorite archetypes to the game. Definitely want to make miniatures for Kozmo for my own set, and either Vampire or Grave Keeper for my wife.

The US starter set comes with 6 figures not 4: Knight of Twin Swords, Thunderball, Strike Ninja, Gearfried, Vorse Raider, and Buster Blader (and also a Monster Lord figure). Booster packs were $5 each and only came with 1 figure and the card for it. I wanted this game so bad as a kid, but we couldn't afford it (same with regular yugioh booster packs). The Japanese version of the board game, each figure came with it's own unique dice with unique crests and folds out a certain way. I played DDM rom recently and it stinks. For some reason the CPU's in the ROM online are super brain dead, and drop rates for good dice are terrible. I've been playing the IRL cartridge version lately and the opponents are much more difficult and summon extremely consistently, drops are a lot better too. I play Dungeon Dice Monsters online on Table Top Simulator with my friends a lot and it is super fun. Feels like chess, except all of the pieces are unique. A lot of the IRL dice have different effects than the gba dice. Like IRL Jinzo removes all of your opponents trap crests when summoned (he's still ass tho). Also IRL game you roll dice twice per turn, which greatly speeds up summons and crests.

I do personally remember that brief period where DDM was selling for full price. Walmart and TrU prices for "boosters" ranged $15-$20, and I remember looking at DDM, and purposefully choosing to just not ask for it because I could not for the life of me understand how to play it, and how it could convert to the real world, with the "drawing" dice from a "deck" and having to randomly unfold said dice to draw a pathway to attack the other side. It felt like the sort of game that would not translate well to real life; the sort of board game that NEEDS to be a computer game to be properly playable.
And, well, hey look, a video game that's a substantially better experience than real life DDM.

    • @gameboylad

Fun Fact: There are materials out there that have a memory structere and fold or unfold in hot or cold water. Dice unfolding themselves could be done in the real world (if you are willing to put your playfield under water, that is).

You've got a lot of Japanese learning ahead of you if you're looking for DCGs; some of the best never escaped the islands. If you willing to struggle through something like Card Hero or Shaman King blind though, I'll be here to watch for sure.
On DDM, I never had much time with it myself but its nuts to see how bad the dice pool is in that game. I know early Yugioh was scant on effects but it's like they flat out forgot to finish some of the monsters here. The physical game itself had more meat but was gimmicky, and that was without the unfolding dice Japan got.
Can't wait to see how you tear into Destiny Board Traveler, as I remember that game being functional at best. Play something like Culdcept afterwards, it's a night and day difference.
