Thank you all for watching the video! Unfortunately it took a bit to long to make but i wanted to tune up the video since it was initially being rushed. Unfortunately I left out the rematch with Pegasus and didn't have a way to edit it in smoothly. I might end up making shorts and will use one to talk about his stage lmao. Here is a direct link to the channel of oak who made the libra mod for this game! So if you liked what you see or already a fan and want more from the game, check out some of the stuff on their channel and website! I don't think it's against the rules to put a link to the creators channel heheheh www.youtube.com/@OakCMC Also links to the channels I shouted out! www.youtube.com/@ScrubBusta www.youtube.com/@JasonGravesPoser
Dude I want to know which games were shown when you were showing the different attack animations after you showed duelist of the roses and another game
@@ingamingpc1634 In order it was Final Fantasy Tactics, Pokemon Battle revolution, Disgaea 4 and or 5 I think, Street fighter 6 and fire emblem towards the end of that segment
as a person who's been recently SUPER into yugioh and also a long time player of fire emblem, this video hit my recommendations tab at a terrifyingly PERFECT time
This video got delayed a lot and I was worried it might not click with my audience. I'm happy I delayed it to make it as good as I can and be shown love for it. Welcome aboard!
You can FEEL the love they wanted to put into this. Voice acting, the in depth rules, and honestly... These STAGES? They look incredible. We need a modern version of this, asap.
I love how the Easter Island statues go do their meme noise but Gameboylad still explains everything normally without being interrupted That's how strong the Moyais presence is
49:58 another thing could be that cherry blossoms in japan are both symbols of beauty, love and due to their impermanence: death. So it kinda fits with Bakura/yami Bakura being the love/death duality.
Don't know if this was intentional in the editing, but Mai snickering because Yugi "finally came" made me laugh way harder than it should have. Great vid as always, btw.
The fight with Mako would've been more interesting if the game a.) forced you to go out of your way to trigger the ship rising and b.) signaled to you that this was a thing you could do. Then the ship rising and helping you out would've been a reward for engaging with game mechanics rather than just "a thing that happens"
Its probably a reference to how the water monsters got weaker in the anime. but like you said it would have been better if the player had to work for it rather than hand it to them
I feel like the reason they keep bringing in Shadi in the older Yu-Gi-Oh games, despite not playing a game himself, is cause he's a huge and important character in the original DM series, and they want to be as thoroughly
First off, LOVE the video, as always, it was worth the wait, you clearly put a lot of effort into researching the games you play, and the editing got an audible laugh out of me several times, which I've come to expect from your videos. Excellent content as always. This is one of my favorite games. Cuz it's good? Not necessarily, It was just my first tactics game from when I was a kid. I thought back then (and still think now) that the movement and attack patterns for the pieces has so much potential. Similar to your evaluation, I agree the potential was there but the execution wasn't so good. Since I'm nostalgia blind for it, I wish that you could say you enjoyed this more than you did, but it sounds like you enjoyed this more than most games you've played on this channel so far so I'll take that as a win. Given that this is one of my favorite games of its genre, I have a lot to say, here are some miscellaneous tips (in case you ever wanted to go back to this game in your free time, or if anybody else in the comments wants them). I'll probably post another comment with other thoughts, because I'm annoying like that. But hey, it's good for the algorithm right? - First off, defeated units can be used again after one battle like you mentioned in the video. Thing is, it doesn't matter if you win or lose that battle. To get around a unit being faded out in your pool (and thus, the consequences of losing it) you can literally just surrender in the next battle, then go back in and retry. There is no punishment for losing. - Speaking of surrendering, I didn't hear you mention it so I don't know if you're aware, some units have special unlock conditions, like the Celtic Guardian needing the player to surrender 20 times in the third and/or fourth area (for some reason??). Other far less tedious unlocks include a Wind unit which is unlocked basically if you don't play wind units (less than 10 wind units after beating Grandpa / moving on to area 2) and a Fire unit unlocked by having 10(?) hours of play time in area 2. Those two are easy to get on any playthrough, so you could make a plan around them if you were using those symbols. There's also a Water unit that can be unlocked by owning 50 water units, but that's not really worth it since you already have FIFTY Water units to chose from. - I didn't catch you mention it, but in areas 2, 3, and 4 you can fight opponents in whichever order you want. Mako's fight is funny in this regard actually, If you choose to fight Mai before him, you can grab her harpie lady, a wind unit with big movement. If you place it in the right spot, you can actually kill his fiend kraken when it's still in its egg, since the opponents with signature monsters like to be drramatic and release them after a few turns. This somewhat rewards planning ahead, if not for the fact Mai's battle is way harder in the first place. Still cool though. Keith's Barrel Dragon is another possible egg-kill, though there's a bit more variance to that one, it won't always go as planned. - In Yami Marik's first map, the one with the sinking tiles, you could just use an entire team of "rook" movement pieces and, provided you go first, you can chip his entire team down by getting rid of a lot of tiles right next to each other so his units have nowhere else to go. This one is often a freebie for me in challenge runs. -The player vs player mode has a cheeky secret in that you're allowed to keep changes to your pieces. If you wanted to, you could fuse/evolve a unit in the pvp mode, surrender, and now you keep that unit.
OOOOOOOH I had no idea about the celtic guardian lmaoooooo. I knew about the fact that units come back just by surrendering but i felt like that was more of an oversight lol. I didn't want to knock down the game too much. especially since i only noticed that was a thing when I started the libra mod. I enjoyed the idea of the game and the presentation a lot. I just wish things were more fleshed out. the libra mod actually gave me the itch I was looking for in this game which is great!
@@gameboylad Coming back to this comment just for posterity. I just finished my first Libra Mod playthrough and I actually find it really OVER tuned, especially the end game, which just turned in to me one-shotting the opponent's capsules or them one-shotting mine, no strategy other than "make sure you draw first blood otherwise you'll lose the numbers game". The mid game was very fun though, really made me think more than I ever have in the game before. Goes to show TRPGs are hard to balance, who knew? Info: I chose randomly and landed on the Thunder symbol, so maybe a defensive symbol makes the experience notably different?
@@BaritoneBeard Thunder apparently is the best in the libra mod and also the vanilla game. For me it was more or less the same but It was fine since the majority of the game was a lot better for me. Also I picked wind so that might have been why my endgame was crazy. It's less about trying to make it balance and more about making it fun and I think it did a good job with that. The vanilla game is just not fun at all for me lmao so this was very much welcoming. balance can come after the game is fun.
@@gameboylad I see your point, I had fun up until the last area when the aforementioned one shot contest was at its peak. As for it being the best, it could be that thunder is the best attack wise but the punishment for making a single mistake was dire, a glass cannon type build. I guess thats on me for not doing a bit more research on exactly how hard the mod was. Its probably worth a playthrough with a defensive team, Water or Earth etc. Pleasure chatting, I think its great that you take the time to respond and interact with your community. Im eargerly awaiting the next video whenever it's ready
This video was so perfectly timed! I just got inspired to go back to Capsule Monster Coliseum recently since I never beat it. Hearing your input on the game made me realize my concerns about the EXP system were unwarranted (2 exp per hit seemed so low!) but it's a shame that end game fights aren't as wild as they should be. No wonder I once saw a video of a Kuriboh one shotting a Blue-Eyes! Sounds like Libra Mod is the go-to for if I want more! It's awesome seeing community efforts to improve games. Your content is top notch and your editing is superb!
47:24 There he is, in all his glory. Fun fact: Pegasus is 24 years old during the DK arc, he's the same age as Mai... This knowledge shall be your curse too.
I think a lot of video essays are just back ground noise with huge runtimes. I strive to make my videos engaging enough for people to keep their eyes on it. Challenging when it's a long video but worth it
@@gameboylad I mean it absolutely is. Not to mention you actually have a lot to say about a very specific source material game, rather than just reading a Wikipedia article. It’s phenomenal stuff.
Can I just say I appericate your choice of music when it comes to these videos. Helps make the gameplay feel more exciting than it normally is. Helps that you post the name of the tracks for anyone wants to hear more of the tracks on their own.
Music is so important when it comes to creating anything. I don't think there's a single person who can create something in silence. So I'm not sure why most youtubers treat music as an after thought lol.
I personally liked it when these old Yugioh games added their own unique takes on a story, as opposed to simply copying over the material from the original series. It offers a way for us to see the characters in a different facet, and as you kinda went over in your Reshef of Destruction vid, it allows for character interactions we never see. They're a swing and a miss a lot of the time, but they're charming in their own way. Great vid as always, seeing these games remind of simpler times. You've earned yourself a sub and I definitely can't wait to see more!
Good to see a game like this getting the spotlight after the disasters that were the last two. While it may have quite a number of issues, particularly the requirements for some of the evolutions, and having to play through the campaign every time you want to get experience for your capsules, it still remains one of my favorite Yu-Gi-Oh video games, right up there with Duelist of the Roses. Something I find weird about the game, not necessarily an issue I have with it, just something kind of odd, is how it calculates damage. Normally it's just subtracting the defender's DEF from the attacker's ATK, which is all well and good, but Advantages and Disadvantages kind of make things messy, as the game's not consistent about how it calculates these advantages with every Attribute. With some of them, Earth and Thunder being the ones I know for sure do this, when units attack an enemy with a disadvantage, they'll do damage equal to their ATK, completely ignoring the opponent's DEF. But then with other attributes, it instead gives a boost to the ATK for that one attack (as seen when Larvae Moth attacked One-Eyed Shield Dragon in this video), the exact amount of which I'm still unsure of to this day, and I haven't been able to find a concrete answer. For all I know, the boost that the other Attributes get when attacking an enemy with a disadvantage could be different among each other as well. I feel this makes planning movements and attacks out in the heat of a "duel" a bit more frustrating than it has to be once Advantages come into the mix, as there will probably be a bunch of times where an attack will either do much more or much less than you were expecting, simply because of these inconsistencies that, to my knowledge, the game doesn't even bother to tell you about (I myself didn't realize this until years after I first started playing, and only when I really started to try to learn how to calculate how much damage I'd be dealing/taking on the fly). It's a bit easier to work with once you get to know it, but I would have preferred it if all of the Attributes had just one consistent way dealing damage against a Monster with a disadvantage was handled.
I HAD NO IDEA! I've been playing the libra mod and at times it feels a bit frustrating not knowing how much damage I can potentially do at times when I have advantage. That's so weird. it's interesting as an idea but I think that's to much for quirky back ground mechanics for a player to retain in their head.
Made me happy to see Nightmare Troubadour getting shouted out early in the video. Good video over all, makes me wonder what capsule monster could have become if it was more widely accepted by the audience.
Yooo this is the first time i catch a new upload of yours since i subbed randomly discovered your channel and LOVED all of the previous yugioh videos keep the good content coming im hyped to see more
Finally off work, and have the time to finish the video, so I decided to start it over. Can't miss any of this glorious selection of music you've got here 😂
Thank you for making a review for this game. It was one of my favourite games in my childhood and my first ever Trpg. I fell in love with the gameplay, the visuals, and the music of it all. Unfortunately, the cd for it broke before i could progress much into the game 😢
Glad you made uploaded this when you did. Had just enough time to download it before my flight took off. Also, i can see where the extra time went in. Video looks good, and scriptin is nice. Shocked to hear the voice acting when it came up, and even more so to find out the reason they sounded familiar is because it the actual voice actors. I love when games can do that!
The creativity this game has is incredible. An underrated classic for sure. Maybe it didn't maximize its potential, but it's a wonderful game regardless.
I'm glad I got to be in your video man, been watching your stuff for a while now and I really like it. Thanks for covering my favorite Yu-Gi-Oh spin-off game ever, I've actually finished a playthrough of it this week, so it's nice to see someone else's perspective on the game I really wish that this one got remastered or something like that, I know that's a reach, but a man can dream, right?
Thank you so much for pointing out the libra mod! I had no idea and it seems a lot of other people didn't have a clue either and their fans of this game.
This was the video I would've made myself if I got off my ass. One personal note I picked up from playing the fuck out of this as a kid: Dark is the most powerful symbol in the game. Not only are there more dark monsters than any other attribute in the roster, but most of the game's big bosses and staples are dark. Dark Magician, Dark Magician Girl, Magician of Black Chaos, the Exodia pieces, Red Eyes Black Dragon, and even Kuriboh can all obliterate all opponents with a full power Dark symbol. It also makes Light opponents a breeze, because Dark buffs the attack (or was it defense?) of Thunder type monsters, with Two-Mouthed Darkruler and Oscillo Hero being particularly powerful thanks to their above-average movement. This meant that the only really *difficult* battle I had was against Ishizu at the final area, mainly because of the layout of the map being so unusual compared to the rest of the game. The opposite was Odion and Rex, thanks to them being Earth types. I'm not sure where Light fits on the tier list here despite monsters like Blue Eyes being in the game, but if you ever wanna breeze through the game in any playthroughs, pick a Dark type symbol with an emphasis on MP and AP. If you do your math right, then by Area 3, the game starts to play itself for you.
Found your channel a week or two ago, been adoring your videos ever since. With all of the little gags and touches you put into them it makes these pretty enjoyable to rewatch. Glad I finally caught a video close to its release, keep up the stellar work dude!
I discovered your channel a few days ago and I'm a huge fan of your content, I hope you get the fame and recognition you deserve cause this is some good shit.
I cannot believe there are Yu Gi Oh games not based on the card game, but are based on the game featured in the manga before the card game... That just blew my mind. As someone who didnt get into Yu-Gi-Oh as a kid; this rabbit hole is so freaking interesting.
This feels like the spiritual successor to Duelists of the Roses, seeing as that game made the "grid-based" take on yugioh popular (or perhaps DotR was the spiritual successor to the Capsule Monsters game from the manga). Also, they reused assets from DotR in this one, which tbh was a great decision, seeing as those assets looked fantastic, and it would have been a huge waste of time and money to remake hundreds of assets that nobody cares that much about again. I have always felt like that concept had a lot of potential, so I'm glad they took another jab at it, but its a shame the execution was poorly handled. As you say, with all the beautiful character sprites, voice acting clips, creative maps and gimmicks, its clear that some of the team was very passionate about making this game rad as hell, so its tragic that it failed to achieve its full potential. Sometimes I wonder if people like this made/will make games of a similar genre without the yugioh branding. I mean all these games deviate highly from the TCG rules, but that allows them to feel fresh and fun, to do their own thing. Perhaps if they just ditch this franchise and all that baggage, they can focus on creating their own characters, stories, and universe. Idk about you, but I would be hella interested to see what crazy shit they can cook up. Side note: maybe Pokemon has brainwashed me, but every time I see an "elemental rock paper scissors" mechanic in a non-Pokemon game like this, I always find at least 1 weird thing about it. For example, wind beats water and lightning beats light. What kind of sense does that make? Shouldn't wind beat earth, and lightning beat wind or water? Even if 90% of it is fine there's always something sus.
LMAO no I feel the same way. It feels like they try so hard to not be like pokemons type advantages, they end up looking weird. In this games case, I'm pretty sure you can get your fill with games like fire emblem or final fantasy tactics. But for duelist of the roses, I don't think anything has even tried that kind of system which is a shame.
@@endmii4096 Wind disturbs water, sure, I guess, but wouldn't it make more sense for wind to beat earth or wood? Speaking of which, why does wood beat wind? The more I think about this, the more it frustrates me haha
A lot of card battlers and their spin offs fade into obscurity and I played a huge chunk of them as a teen. Didn't see many talk about them on youtube or in a way I would like to watch so I might as well do them myself
Battle animations like that are definitely a complicated issue. Part of the reason I prefer games of, say, the NES era is because things usually feel pretty snappy. I'm laser focused on my own performance even when the challenge is unfair because there isn't anything getting in the way of that focus. When you put more of an emphasis on spectacle, the challenge has to be accommodated for so it's challenging enough for each victory to feel satisfying, but it also makes the losses all the more demoralizing because you have to watch the same animations over and over again to the point where it just feels like a waste of time. I think games in an interest of becoming more mainstream have to lean towards the spectacle and making a good first impression. I think it reduces the replay value of a lot of games, but with so many games available now at varying price levels, it's become more about playing as many different games that can hold your attention as possible.
It's crazy cause if you think about it, the issue has been solved but the answer is not satisfying enough for mainstream appeal. You gotta have bigger spectacles to make a buzz. I think the trend of bigger spectacles is cooling off but a large chunk of the 2010's was pushing for that hardcore
Well gahh damn. Never would have given this game a look at, thanks for the review man. Watched all the way through. Your commentary and memes are top tier also bro, keep it goin. Subbed last video, and not disappointed in the least
Yo dude someone finally made a full english translation for the Monster Capsule GBC game! I’ve been playing for a couple days now and it slaps, would love to see you cover it!
Hey man ive been burning through your vids lately and they’re quality, keep up the good work and I hope your channel continues to grow and get the recognition it deserves!
Man the nostalgia. I bought the shonen jump magazine subscription in 2005 (I still have all my issues), before that I had bought any issues I could find whenever my family went to thrift stores. Yugioh besides DBZ, One Piece, Yu Yu Hakusho, and a couple others I forgot was featured back then in SJ. I looked forward to Yugioh the most out of all of them. That same year, EB games/Electronic Botique (which later became Gamestop) had a used copy of this game, a rarity where I lived at the time. I begged my parents to buy it for me. And when I finally played it I was so confused. I only played it for like a week or 2 and then pretended to keep playing it so my parents didn't get upset they spent money on it. 😂
It really do be like that lmao. reminds me of the time i got shadow the hedghog for my birthday and the game was so ass but i pretended to like it cause it was a gift
48:54 Fire Emblem DOES have stupid stuff like that sometimes. Like, in FE7 if you want to promote one of your thieves to assassin they need to be Level 10 and you need to find a Fell Contract. There are only two of them in the game: One is dropped from the boss of a secret chapter that you have to do specific things to unlock and the second one can only be bought in a secret shop in one of the last chapters where a character with a Membership Card (which you also have to find first) has to stand on a specific tile on the map to enter said shop. Or recruiting Stefan in FE9 and 10 where you have to stand on one specific tile with a specific character in a specific map. In FE9, if the wrong character stands on that tile Stefan will just give you his sword and peace out. So you'd have to reset the chapter if you want to recruit him but accidently stepped on the tile with the wrong character.
Lmaoooo yeah it happens in fire emblem. TBF it's not like a majority of them. Just a few exceptions to the rule. this game the weird conditions are the rule
I put so much time into this game that my PS2 couldn't clock in any more time after 99hrs 99min 99sec. Still love this game to death even with its fumbles and such. I was definitely hoping someone made a mod for it and you came with the good news! Kind of sad you didn't talk about the Pegesus rematch since he always gave me a run for my money. I really enjoy seeing these retro yugioh games and can't wait to see the other lesser known ones before we hit the World Championship series!
At the time this video was being made a lot of things irl got in the way which ultimately scrapped some of the writing and editing. I then had to remake almost the whole video and it came out much better but with the way the pacing was in the video, I couldn't fit in some guys. I planned to probably make a short about Pegasus at the least!
I recently discovered your channel and I absolutely love your thorough reviews of these games. It’s really apparent the effort you put into these reviews and how collected your thoughts are in the script along with some fantastic editing. As a huge fan of Yugioh that didn’t play some of these games, it’s so cool to learn about the interesting history of Yugioh video games.
A little late to the party -- things have been hectic and chaotic on my end --, but nonetheless... Gameboylad, Thank you so much for suggesting my mod for your community! I'd also like to let everyone else know that I'm working on another version of this mod, covering a New Game + mode and some improvements to the original Libra Mod. As soon as I have more news, I'll upload more content to my channel! On a side note, I really liked your video, man. It was a very fun watch, and you explained the game's mechanics very well. PS: Yeah, I've decided to abandon Pokémon and focus on taking care of Yu-Gi-Oh monsters hahahah
Now I'm the one late to the party with replying to everyone lol It's an honor to hear you enjoyed the video! I can't wait for more libra mod updates. Had a couple of mutuals hooked to it at the time I showed them it.
So, randomly found some of your videos looking for some good Yu-Gi-Oh nostalgia. And I gotta admit, you have some of the best og game reviews out there my guy. I hope to see more. You do hella work
41:54 Oh I absolutely get this being frustrating. I played another game like this (Kamidori Alchemy Meister, yes I played it because of SsethTzeentach's video on it) and trying to keep your units alive on some maps was just an unbelievable struggle since you can't move or attack on the turns you use abilities, and many of the units had super limited range and power on their abilities and certain types of terrain counted extra and some other bs, that you were really just better off attacking to try and kill the enemy unit or running away than trying to use abilities. Games like this really do remind you that, despite all of the criticism and questionable design decisions, Fire Emblem really is the peak of SRPG games in terms of QOL and just general tightness of play. Like, you really learn to appreciate just how upfront FE is with damage calculations when you go play Tactics Ogre. Or when you miss 9 90% accuracy attacks in a row in Kamidori because of some goofy quirk in the attack formula, or just any of the other bullshit other SRPGs throw at you. Hell, even a game like Advanced Wars, by the same fucking company as Fire Emblem, still has intentionally obtuse mechanics like Luck Damage and that the defense terrain gives you scales down with lower hp units. I will say though, the maps look cool as fuck. I think this game needs a good ROM Hack or something to balance the difficulty or make it so you can choose different symbols so you can try stuff out. Oh, by the way, a guy named Kartal did a difficulty ROM Hack for The Sacred Cards, and it looks really good since it directly addresses your, and everyone else's, biggest complaints about that game, namely that it's a curbstomp game. Back on topic, I think its most frustrating when you can really see that there was a good game here, and they just bungled it. Like, this isn't Lagoon or Pepsiman. This definitely could have been a great game and maybe it could have brought some of the different games played in the manga to a wider audience. 49:07 Lol in Binding Blade, Roy couldn't class change until almost the end of the game because he had to be above level 10 and have the titular Binding Blade. I also think Leif had some bs to his class change in Thracia 776 too. I know Sothe couldn't class change in Radiant Dawn until the 3rd to last chapter or some shit too. So yeah, there is some bs in Fire Emblem for class changes. 53:42 Radiant Dawn has a sequence like this. In the first part of the game there is a map that has a ton of gold in the aesthetics followed up by a defense map in some ruins. 12:31 There's a game for that! It's called Animorphs for the GBC lol. Its literally Pokemon without animations, and some other bullshit. I don't recommend playing it, but you should definitely watch speedruns of it since its a super RNG game and it can just completely ruin your run out of nowhere.
I just realized I made a mistake in my video. I played BLAZING BLADE not binding. yeah that's the icky one with roy being a lord end game lmao. And yeah Kartal was actually in my discord posting all of his progress when making the sacred cards patch lol. This game has the libra mod which makes the game SO MUCH better. some of the stuff like Specials and how they work can't change, but oak has changed the effects of some to at least be viable to sacrifice movement for an ability.
I didn't know about those board games Takahashi made during the lockdown. That was so nice of him. Man, the presentation in this game is topnotch, but my problem would be with the gameplay. From the footage I find it very unintuitive compared to other games in the genre. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance was my first SRPG ever and I understood what I had to do right away. Same thing when I picked up Fire Emblem 7 shortly after. In this game I feel like I would be completely lost without a guide, which is not a good first impression. The lack of a proper story to keep you engaged also doesn't help. At least it gave us some really cool visuals and it has the voices we know and love. I might give it a try with the mod, but I'd have to be in the right mindset for it. 12:32 What game is this? It looks sick.
Disgaea 5 lol. I only played 2 and 4 but I have hundreds of hours in those 2 entries. I'm often told 5 is the best gameplay wise. 2 probably has the best story I think. I really loved the characters in 4 though
@@gameboylad Thank you! Hey, aren't those the games where the unit stats go ridiculously high? Like 99999999 and I might be missing nines? I've always been intimidated by that ever since I saw a random screenshot a long time ago.
This was a game I got as a kid, and at first I couldn't understand or create strategies to win. This game trained me to become an Strategy game player. also grinding for the exodia peices was my first video game grind
I havent playrd Yugioh since I was around 11, but youtube randomly recommended your channel and i already watched a ton of videos Good shit man, youre very funny and i like your vids a lot
You mentioned permadeath, and personally, I think the game would benefit from some Nuzlocke style self-imposed challenge. I put my list of "Nuzlocke" style rules at the end of this comment, if interested. I know there's a Patreon tier for this, but I threw it in here in case anyone else in the comments wanted to try it. The number one problem I have with this game is lack of difficulty. Not even as a veteran tactics player, but even when I was a kid this game was piss easy. Because the opponents' pieces never really scale past level 1 or 2 (as you explained in the video), the game has the opposite of a difficulty spike. A difficulty valley, I guess. Once you have a single level ~5 unit you can just body half of an army with that one piece. No matter how iconic Blue Eyes, is, a level 1 BEWD will always get bodied by a level 4 or 5 Steel Scorpion. 20:06 Another big problem with the difficulty in this game is described here, perhaps without you even realizing it. You can actually use this tactic for every enemy. I think they all have the same AI? You can just sit, wait for the opponent to come to you with one or two pieces at a time, then jump that piece with your whole army. Rinse and repeat until you win. This works for probably 23/25 maps, only real exception being Mokuba's and Yami Marik's first maps, due to the hazards. Even with Nuzlocke-esque rules, the game is still painfully easy. Again you pretty much just need a single level 5 or 6 and you're good. If they ever remade this game, the number one thing I'd need is a hard mode where the challenge actually scales. I haven't tried Libra Mod but My assumption is the core "easiness" factor is still present since those are architectural issues with the games rather than individual pieces or team comps being the problem (attribute boost, for example) so maybe this sort of self imposed challenge works for that as well? Dunno. If you're interested in doing so on a replay, Or if anyone in the comments section is interested, my "Nuzlocke" style rules are as follows: -Mono-Attribute, optionally you can choose an attribute that isn't your symbols. I usually don't, I still want to have a little fun. -Permadeath -Only singleton pieces (Even though you get two fire reapers from Joey, you can only ever use one) This makes it easier to remember when they died without needing a notepad or something. This isn't perfect, it takes some adjustments, as you NEED 10 units to start the game so you'll probably have some dupes at the beginning. -Once you assign a unique piece to one of your 50 slot pool, it stays there. No other piece can be put there, and When it dies, you remove it from that slot. This way you are able to run out of pieces for a game over, and it makes you think about which pieces to use or how many. Otherwise there really isn't a challenge. Again, this needs an asterisk because for at least the first area you will have dupes since you need to have at least 10 units in your pool. -If you lose a battle outright, restart.
I just found your channel and love your content. I would also absolutely watch a Capsule Monster Coliseum Libra Mod playtrough of you! Not enough good playthroughs of that mod out there
The second I saw that Under Night intro I knew it was gonna be a good one. More games to look into when I get on another yu-gi-oh kick and get bored with tag force 1, thanks for the great video!
To explain the Solomon map apparently its a map based on one of the boards from the Capsule Monster official board game which explains why its only fire and wood
I am enjoying your look back at Yugioh games, it has gotten me to play Sacred Cards and Reshef (I played a mod that makes it less grindy and resets your LP to 8000 every duel and makes the NPCs have 8000 LP other than the postgame). I found your vidoes at the same time as Zane Sliver's who is doing a retrospective on all the yugioh games. Maybe the two of you would want to collaborate or something.
I watch a few other people for references on things in my videos post gameplay. That's one of the channels that was helpful for me at the start. I think I need to get my feet a bit more wet before I start to do collabs for my videos but if people are willing to bring me on I'm open to it
For the starburst attack patterns, don’t think about it as an awkward attack pattern, they have the attack pattern of both bishops AND rooks WITH the ability to hit to the sides and the rear and the only drawback is that they can only hit from a distance, they are incredibly flexible but you run into problems if you use too many of them. I usually have just one, max two in my team. Think of them as archers, limited but flexible. For starburst movement, they move like both rooks AND bishops but can only move a specific number of spaces at a time. If you only run one you can definitely run into problems with enemies dodging tf out of them but if you take TWO and place them right next to each other, one will always be able to hit, a lot of fun but definitely not for everyone, I’m not as big a fan of this type as the first type since movement is awkward but for the first type, Giselle the king of mythical beasts is SOO much fun (I play earth symbols and they get an hp buff so it’s great) For starburst move AND atk…. Just no, leave that shit to die in a ditch 😂😂😂😂
I'm currently only about halfway through this huge video and I gotta say it's wonderful. Currently really only have one nitpick and it's less about the video and more the description, that being that while you shouted out Jason Graves and Scrub Busta it would have been nice to have a link to their channels in the video description. But maybe the description of the video ran out of space with how much nice information is already there.
oh yeee you right lol I gotta get that done stat! I got swamped by some things cause july the 4th is coming up. They should be there right after this comment !
I remember when I was a young kid and I played the hell out of this game, though it was basically brute force and trial-and-error over any real strategy due to my age(went mono-element, overlevelling certain pieces while underlevelling others). I had a tendency to reset a lot if I ever got stuck at certain levels, and I remember for quite a while I was hard-stuck in the 4th area, especially vs Kaiba. Only reason I ever won was because I cycled through elements between each new playthrough, and when I landed on Thunder, it made the endgame an utter joke (the last Earth duelist is Odion at the midway point of the game, and the second half of the game, 6/12 of the duelists were Light). Funnily enough, the only other Thunder duelist in the game if the player doesn't pick it was Mokuba, which might have explained why he was the Capsule Monster champ, all things considered
Great video. :) Never even knew there was a PS2 capsule monsters game, and it's kinda sad to see that if it had a few tweaks and some polish, it could have been a great cult classic. But the idea to not level enemies or allow for Crystal changes is so oof. And the telltale sign of rushing in the 70-80 dropped monsters. I eagerly await your next video, they never cease to attain. Thank you for your time and effort.
50:20 regarding the map, you can probably attribute to Bakura using fiends and spirits in his card decks, and Japanese lore has nights like that one playing host to the March of a hundred demons (or might have been thousand).
Yeah a few of the decks in this game have names referencing things and puns like Rebecca's big bang usa being a pun since apparently fire princess name in ocg has word play with big bang
I considered skipping that game cause I felt like it wouldn't offer much but it seems people would like for that video to be a thing so i'll make one down the line for sure
@@gameboylad great! whenever you can man, i like the Kaiba puzzles in that one, the story and decks seem to be similar to the ones you've already cover so i get it
Clicked on this off of recommended and was not expecting that UNI music in the beginning. Somehow its music seems to make it everywhere. UNI is great. I had not heard of this game till now, seems pretty cool.
@@gameboylad I wish my locals had uni theres like two people who sometimes show up that play a little bit, but its mostly street fighter players and a handful of guilty gear. Wish it got more recognition. Its sick to see some UNI fans out in the wild though.
Just finished the video and I gotta say this game looks like it could've been a long running thing alongside the card game. It looks like a lot of fun even if it's a bit easy. I know a lot of people have probably said it by now but if Konami ever tries these kinds of weird games again (it's extremely unlikely they will) they could easily get away with just making like 200-300 new models of monsters old and new for people to play with and see animations for. I don't think anyone expects them to go and make like 1000 models or something like that but a lot of people really wanna see some of the newer cards and the cards between get models and animations. Like imagine that evolution mechanic but with the Evol monsters till you land on the big boys like Dolka or Laggia that'd be so cool! Maybe even something like Baby D turning into Ultimate Tyranno or Super Conductor Tyranno.
it would be so cool for konami to experiment with making single player games like this again but them making games like this is not something I see happening ever again in our lifetime lol

I gotta say, as a fighting game fan, I really like the Under-Night inspired intros and the amount of tracks you use for the videos. It's a nice vibe.
Glad you like them! These tracks have been ear worms for me for years
Don't know if this was intentional in the editing, but Mai snickering because Yugi "finally came" made me laugh way harder than it should have. Great vid as always, btw.
Not intentional at first but I noticed at a point and kept it in 💀
The fight with Mako would've been more interesting if the game
a.) forced you to go out of your way to trigger the ship rising
and b.) signaled to you that this was a thing you could do.
@@gameboylad I haven't tried Libra but with that review for it, it sounds like I'll have to give a go!

Capsule Coliseum was one of the best and most unique Yugioh games to ever exist. I still remember when I first got blue eyes ultimate dragon.
This and duelist of the roses are definitely at the top of being unique games
This video was so perfectly timed! I just got inspired to go back to Capsule Monster Coliseum recently since I never beat it.
Hearing your input on the game made me realize my concerns about the EXP system were unwarranted (2 exp per hit seemed so low!) but it's a shame that end game fights aren't as wild as they should be. No wonder I once saw a video of a Kuriboh one shotting a Blue-Eyes!

47:24 There he is, in all his glory. Fun fact: Pegasus is 24 years old during the DK arc, he's the same age as Mai... This knowledge shall be your curse too.

These videos are top tier watching. Usually I use videos like this for background noise, but I actually pay attention. Good stuff.
Yeah I wished these games leaned more towards the interactions between characters like reshef did. Thank you so much for watching and subbing!
Happy you bringing back the nostalgia for us that grew up with these games. I definitely would like to see your take on Duelist of the Roses.
For sure. It'll be a while before i get to that game but i have big plans for it

If you do your math right, then by Area 3, the game starts to play itself for you.
yeah it seems like dark, thunder, wood and fire are extremely good. Id assume dark being the best because of exodia lol

I cannot believe there are Yu Gi Oh games not based on the card game, but are based on the game featured in the manga before the card game...
That just blew my mind. As someone who didnt get into Yu-Gi-Oh as a kid; this rabbit hole is so freaking interesting.
For a long time at the start of the card game, the video games just simply did not play like the card game lmao
There was a physical version of this game as well used to have a Sanga figure and Celtic guardian
Your production value is so good. Love these
Red Panda! Glad you like them!
The first match against Yami marik in this game was fantastic.
It felt like a real shadow game.
One of the top maps of the game for sure!
I remember it as thunder blinds the light and wind messes with the tides of water. Weird logic, but at least it makes some sense.
@@endmii4096 Wind disturbs water, sure, I guess, but wouldn't it make more sense for wind to beat earth or wood? Speaking of which, why does wood beat wind? The more I think about this, the more it frustrates me haha

I was looking for your account after watching your videos a month or two ago and could not find it. Good to see YT recommended works.
glad the algorithm did it's magic and brought you back!
Well gahh damn. Never would have given this game a look at, thanks for the review man. Watched all the way through. Your commentary and memes are top tier also bro, keep it goin. Subbed last video, and not disappointed in the least
Thank you for pulling up! I try my best with these and I'm happy to see yall like em
The interesting thing is there were a lot of turn based board games in the 00s. One of my favourites before I found Fire Emblem was Robot Warlords
there was this one on the dream cast. I always forget the name but I've been wanting to play it for years
Yo dude someone finally made a full english translation for the Monster Capsule GBC game! I’ve been playing for a couple days now and it slaps, would love to see you cover it!
Way down the line maybe lol
First time viewer, this video is awesome! I never knew something cool like this existed 😮 Looking forward to more videos from you!
More to come hopefully soon!
@@gameboylad I get that. Any like light for Pegesus Rematch in this game is good enough for me.
My man, you just made my day brother \o/
Glad to do it
I recently discovered your channel and I absolutely love your thorough reviews of these games.
Now I'm the one late to the party with replying to everyone lol
It's an honor to hear you enjoyed the video!
You do hella work
Welcome aboard and thank you for watching!
I love the idea of capsule monsters so much, been waiting for a fan translation of that PS1 game for years.
The mechanics of the game remind me of monster rancher lol
@@gameboylad Yeah the libra mod is what I got for not watching the video all the way until the end before commenting lol.
Amazing video as always 👏
It may take long but these are some top quality reviews
thank you! I wish I could get these out faster but sometimes life happens
Oh my god finally hes back
In the flesh!
I feel Capsule Coliseum has the best music in any Yu-Gi-Oh game.
Some of the music in this game is solid. I think ishizu's stage is one of the better ones for me
Heard Xenosaga battle music. Had to sub - excited for future vids!
I adore Xenosaga and I'm happy to own the games to this day
I didn't know about those board games Takahashi made during the lockdown.
@@mateobonavento3939 the later entries. I think all that started around 5? It's just numbers getting bigger for show mostly
This was a game I got as a kid, and at first I couldn't understand or create strategies to win. This game trained me to become an Strategy game player. also grinding for the exodia peices was my first video game grind
I can definitely see how this game was a lot of peoples first foray into strategy games
Letsssss gooooo! If I may be so bold, I would love to see duelist of roses at your own pace good sir!
It'll be a while before I do that game. mostly because I want to get to a point where I can afford to give that game the production it deserves
Another Banger My Guy!
I havent playrd Yugioh since I was around 11, but youtube randomly recommended your channel and i already watched a ton of videos
Good shit man, youre very funny and i like your vids a lot
Thank you jack frost!
Dunno.
If you're interested in doing so on a replay, Or if anyone in the comments section is interested, my "Nuzlocke" style rules are as follows:
-Mono-Attribute, optionally you can choose an attribute that isn't your symbols. I usually don't, I still want to have a little fun.
-Permadeath
-Only singleton pieces (Even though you get two fire reapers from Joey, you can only ever use one) This makes it easier to remember when they died without needing a notepad or something.
Not enough good playthroughs of that mod out there
Welcome aboard! Once I have a schedule down, I'll be able to do it!
The second I saw that Under Night intro I knew it was gonna be a good one. More games to look into when I get on another yu-gi-oh kick and get bored with tag force 1, thanks for the great video!
Glad you enjoyed! Some of the older games have mods that improve the issues they had so be sure to look into that too
Breaking out the old magics with "is that a gun?"
Oldie but Goldie
To explain the Solomon map apparently its a map based on one of the boards from the Capsule Monster official board game which explains why its only fire and wood
I heard the Unist music and immediately knew I was in for a good time
Under night is just too good and the OST is perfection
@@gameboylad Frfr it has Merkava
Apparently the cherry blossoms in Bakura's stage represent the fragility of life, representing how Bakura lost his mother and sister in the manga.
Ooooh this might be the one!
Looks like you're blowing up. Good work.
Slowly but surely, I'll take what I can get!
Finally, a new video!!! Lets go!!!!
It's been 3000 years
I am enjoying your look back at Yugioh games, it has gotten me to play Sacred Cards and Reshef (I played a mod that makes it less grindy and resets your LP to 8000 every duel and makes the NPCs have 8000 LP other than the postgame).
If you only run one you can definitely run into problems with enemies dodging tf out of them but if you take TWO and place them right next to each other, one will always be able to hit, a lot of fun but definitely not for everyone, I’m not as big a fan of this type as the first type since movement is awkward but for the first type, Giselle the king of mythical beasts is SOO much fun (I play earth symbols and they get an hp buff so it’s great)
For starburst move AND atk…. Just no, leave that shit to die in a ditch 😂😂😂😂
I like rooks that attack with that pattern like the shark. they were more consistent in kills and don't have many blind spots.
@@gameboylad he is a good one 👍
@@gameboylad psychic kappa is a terrible monster but it evolves into hyosube and that is actually pretty good
Found your channel recently and I'm already a fan of your content. Love the under night intro
Under night is awesome!
Haven't played Capsulee Colloseum but now I am mighty interested. I would also love to see you stream or at least cover the Libra edition!
Just gotta figure out a schedule for the streams and i'll be on it!
@@gameboylad Love your active engagement with all members of your community. Keep it up man
I'm currently only about halfway through this huge video and I gotta say it's wonderful.
Libra mod is absolutely game-changing
Leave it up to brazil to breath new life into these old games
Just found your comment; thank you! :)
Yeah I hear thunder is incredibly powerful in this game. seems like the bread winning elements are wood, fire and thunder for sure
This man literally only posts bangers.🌹
Only the finest around here
Seeing you play the libra mod would be cool
been thinking about it. Just need to pick the proper schedule for it
@@gameboylad btw i assume the mod require some kind of cord from pc to ps2? Or can you play on pc?
@@SoulWhiteAngel You can play it on PC. I think that's the only way cause its an app that changes the data of the game on the fly rather than patch it
@@gameboylad good to know thanks! I still own the game but had to check
Glad you enjoyed it! The choice to not increase the level of the units you fight mid to late game is baffling
Can't believe Tharja and Yugi got together and had a kid, that's crazy
Time skip went crazy with this one
i just binged all your videos man, you're awesome! can't wait for you to cover ygo 7 trials to glory, love that game!
The OST in the games are really good. My locals had UNI back then so it's been a part in my brain for years
@@gameboylad I wish my locals had uni theres like two people who sometimes show up that play a little bit, but its mostly street fighter players and a handful of guilty gear. Wish it got more recognition.
Its sick to see some UNI fans out in the wild though.
I had heard of the other capsule monster games but not about this one. Looks interesting enough to try out myself. Thanks for another great video!
It has a lot of interesting concepts and I highly suggest playing the libra mod of the game for sure
