  • How to Build a Pochade Plein Air Painting Box!
I used an Eylar Hard Case and built a pochade outdoor painting box to take out on my plein air trips! This video shows you how to do the same! You will see me build the interior creating space for supplies, the palette that hinges and leaves room for a palette garage (see materials list below), and the panel holder and wet panel compartment. There is a place to hang a wash can and the knob works to also hang the trash bag. This box is also equipped with a tripod attachment. I’m quite pleased with the outcome of the project and I’m relieved at its sturdiness.
Below, I have included links to the Amazon products I used for my box. If you click on a link and purchase the item, you won’t pay any more than the item’s regular cost. I will make a small amount from Amazon for each sale.
    Supplies I used:
Forstner Bit Set for Wood Drilling
    amzn.to/3SJFrI7
Velcro Strips- cut into thinner strips
    amzn.to/3KGcqes
Keeper- 10” Mini Bungee Cords (cut and knotted to size for different panel sizes)
    amzn.to/3ktyOx7
    Hillman Stainless Round Base Tee Nut (1/4"- 20 x 5/16” x 3/4”)
    amzn.to/41qrmDk
Gorilla 2 Part Epoxy, 5 Minute
    amzn.to/3xXZAAu
    Palette Garage 12”
    amzn.to/3Yaz9T4
    Eylar Protective Camera Hard Case (13.37" x 11.62” x 6”)
    amzn.to/3kFqeLt
Wood Pieces for Supports- I used various sizes of square wooden dowels
(no link but there are some options on Amazon)
    3- 9”x12” 1/8” panels glued
    amzn.to/3ZxBGrD
    Small Hinges and Screws
(no link but find thin small hinges at your local hardware store)
Wood Glue (any wood glue will work)
    amzn.to/3SyH7nT
    Mini Knob
    amzn.to/3SPifIv
You will also need a sturdy tripod with 1/4” screw plate attachment.
This is the tripod I use but there are less expensive brands. The tripod
for this box must be sturdy however.

To me the greatest things about being an artist is creating what we need to be specific to our needs.

That is also most enjoyable for myself. I once took a college course that brought up the view that there are no new artistic ideas, only borrowed. I don’t believe that. I think our creative endeavors are inspired by our needs, how we see the world, what we feel from our experiences and also others’ ideas. But we generate our own ideas from all of that and more. That’s creativity on a personal level. I love creating my own ideas from other ideas!

What a great idea and build. The company Harbor Freight carries a brand of similar cases, Apache, and I have often looked at them and though there is probably a way to make a pochard box out of one of them.

Thank you! This was a fun and fairly simple project as you can see. I love the Harbor Freight supplies and I’m sure their box is comparable. I’d like to know if you build one and any changes you make to meet your needs.

These will last longer and cost far less than anything you'd buy from an art shop.

Your handy! I bought a pochade box last year. So far I like it, but you are giving me some ideas.

Thank you:) Ha ha- yes, I have too many ideas! I have other boxes as well that I’ve used over the years. I think this one might turn out to be my favorite because of the storage and ease of use. The other boxes work well but I find I’m always having to bend down to the ground to get more paint. Last night I added a velcro strip that runs up the back panel to hold a moveable panel foot. I’ll show it in the next video and how it stabilizes my panel while painting. Thanks for watching!

Great idea. One question: isn't the knob in the way when storing the panels in the panel holder?

    • @artistinthewoods9378
      @artistinthewoods9378  Год назад +1

That is a good question and quite perceptive. There is at least a half inch space for the knob height, however mine is taller than 1/2”, but where I placed the knob makes it still work. I’m storing 8x10 panels which allows me to push the panels towards the right away from the knob. It wasn’t actually an issue I found when using the holder. Others may want to look for a knob that is no taller than 1/2” if there is a concern or if the panel will be longer than the 8x10. Thank you for bringing the height of the knob to my attention.

After your comment, I found a small knob that will be less intrusive. I’m ok with what I used, but you brought up a good point. I’m including that knob as an option in my list under my description. Thanks again!

My son built two boxes for me, he just cut off a small corner of the pallet where I could get my finger in to lift the pallet
