I’m so excited to share this video, "Painting Storm Clouds and Waves en Plein Air!” This is my tutorial of a day I thought would be rained out, but I managed to paint a wonderful little high key study that captures a threatening, stormy sky and atmospheric ocean scene. Do you have your box on a tripod in your van? Or is it on your lap? I’m fascinated with your van setup. I’m older and disabled. I drive a mini van and I would love to be able to paint from my van.

    • @artistinthewoods9378

      At times I will put it on a tripod in the van. Mostly, I find it easier to set it on a short table or stool and bungee it to hold it in place if I’m inside. Then I can sit on cushions and get a better view out the side door. Otherwise I will stand outside the door or sit at the opening with my feet on the ground and box on the tripod. This is most comfortable actually depending on the weather.

    To me the greatest things about being an artist is creating what we need to be specific to our needs.

    • @artistinthewoods9378
      @artistinthewoods9378 Год назад

      That is also most enjoyable for myself. I once took a college course that brought up the view that there are no new artistic ideas, only borrowed. I don’t believe that. I think our creative endeavors are inspired by our needs, how we see the world, what we feel from our experiences and also others’ ideas. But we generate our own ideas from all of that and more. That’s creativity on a personal level. I love creating my own ideas from other ideas!

And the color of the cloud shadows was very helpful as I struggle to see the temperature of shadows. It was very obvious in your cloud demo. Great idea. One question: isn't the knob in the way when storing the panels in the panel holder?

    • @artistinthewoods9378
      @artistinthewoods9378 Год назад

      That is a good question and quite perceptive. There is at least a half inch space for the knob height, however mine is taller than 1/2”, but where I placed the knob makes it still work. I’m storing 8x10 panels which allows me to push the panels towards the right away from the knob. It wasn’t actually an issue I found when using the holder. Others may want to look for a knob that is no taller than 1/2” if there is a concern or if the panel will be longer than the 8x10. Thank you for bringing the height of the knob to my attention.

    • @artistinthewoods9378
      @artistinthewoods9378 Год назад

      After your comment, I found a small knob that will be less intrusive. I’m ok with what I used, but you brought up a good point. I’m including that knob as an option in my list under my description. Thanks again!

      Thank you… yes we have been hit hard by drought and wild fires, thus everything is trimmed back and dry at various times of the year. I will need to paint Yosemite for you😂 which is an hour over a couple of ridges from my home studio. Remember that California is vast with varying landscape features. A bit of rain which we are now beginning to receive will give us a new and greener view:) Walking through a redwood forest and along the ocean are favorite California experiences, but I do still see a subtle beauty in the dry desert landscape especially during sunrise and sunset with purple and orange light on the dry rocky terrain. Check out some Edgar Payne paintings. He settled here and painted it all. Ansel Adams also gives you a beautiful perspective as well! Thanks for watching and I will continue👍🏼

      @@artistinthewoods9378 or does have its own beauty there is no doubt about that. Thank God for the fires huh. For without them forests couldn't survive and there would be no evergreens. Although I bet that does leave things dry looking. I never thought about that. Must be why California has such great nutrient rich soil. All the carbon put back into the soil while nature cuts back on the weeds. I always thought the native Americans were brilliant for burning all the plains every year and almost all the west. Which herded the animals, cleared the land and forced new growth. Bloody brilliant of them to know that. My wife is from California. Long Beach. To hear her tell it I always pictured blue oceans and green grass. You are right. I forget California is vast. Can't wait to see where you go next and what marvels you produce.

    Isn't it funny how we each see things so differently. You saw beauty and captured it. I see dry waste land and a little hill. With that said however, I do like your painting though.

      It took me awhile to see as an artist while I was learning my craft. I remember driving down a country road after my first few classes learning watercolor and suddenly seeing the color variations and the value changes. I was so excited! Now when I’m in nature, I relax and let my senses respond. Life is busy for most of us and sometimes it’s difficult to start a painting because of the fray. But I do push myself in my process starting with seeing and feeling the scene. That’s usually all it takes to get motivated. Thank you for taking time to watch the video and also for your comment. I have my computer and RUclips's volume tuned up as high as it can go but it was often hard to understand you. The music, too, would sometimes drown you out, which is a shame. The music and the info was good, I am going to watch some others of yours. I am new to gouache, but not to watercolors. I've not really painted much with opaque paint. I spent years doing tole painting, including a few on canvas in oil, but switched to acrylic, and then quit because I grew tired of painting someone else's designs. I can figure things out in watercolor but it is not easy switching to opaque!

    I really liked the original painting, especially the colors, can’t wait to see what you come up with on this new one! I am enjoying your channel. Please keep the, coming!

      Thanks, yes the original has some positive features- just a little dark and unclear. Hopefully with the composition changes and clarity of value masses it will be much better. I’m gearing up to get back to it this morning. I will definitely keep them coming!

    Did you take the seats out of your van?

    • @artistinthewoods9378
      @artistinthewoods9378 2 года назад

      Yes, all the back seats. It was a chore😏 I’ll do a video specifically showing the interior soon. We’re planning a painting trip to Idaho and I’ll have it all ready for a camp/paint trip and will do the video then. The bed slides in to make space for painting and a sofa of sorts. I am looking at a new van, but the middle seats may not be as removable. Because I’ve got the far back seats out, I have oodles of storage in the seat stow area for painting gear.

      Ok… I did post some in one of the videos, but perhaps I should always show my sketch in the video. Point taken. I’ll go back and see if I missed posting some. Thanks for asking. I want to know what viewers are hoping to see in the videos:)
