Judas was the treasurer and when he left, they assumed he was paying the restaurateur for the Passover dinner. Then he went to the religious officials to betray Jesus and collected 30 pieces if silver.
Judas Iscariot received thirty pieces of silver (the price of a stolen or lost slave) after he left the table. He was the usual keeper of the coins, so holding a purse would identify him in this painting. According to the Gospel of John 12, verse 6, he also found occasion to dip into the funds for his own use.
I’m not convinced. Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder’, so is ‘significance’ and ‘meaning’. We see what we want to see, always. So there are ‘four groups of three’, but why? Interpretation is just guesswork.
Not a religious person, however the explanation of this painting in the movie ,I found quite intriguing. It actually had me seeking out a copy of the painting just to be able to follow the train of thought presented.
I’m sure someone with imagination could use any other element of that painting and propose an entirely different interpretation. Da Vinci has probably never intended those details to mean anything special.
Definitely still believe ‘John’ is Mary Magdalene….in a patriarchal society, they had to villainize her…Da Vinci was clever and rebellious by including her…love it! Also, early christians that were persecuted were mostly women because Jesus empowered them and men couldn’t stand that, so they persecuted.
It looks more like the effiminate male model that Da vinci used in his paintings even to depict Jesus Christ, and that male model is rumoured to be Da Vinci's lover
“Peter’s hand is on John’s shoulder”. Why is the color of Peter’s sleeve, on that hand, not the same color as the sleeve on the hand holding the knife? Time: 7:59.
It looks to me like what we're seeing with his hand that's near John, actually IS the color of the other sleeve right there just under his wrist. This makes me think that what I'm seeing that's a different color could be like a mantle draping over his actual sleeve. A lot of prophets wore mantles back then - Samuel, Elijah, Elisha - and Peter would fit the role of a prophet. That's my interpretation of why the difference, anyway.
The mantle is covering most of the sleeve, but you can can see the blue cuff of the sleeve. His hand is not on HER shoulder. He is whispering to her and and gesturing towards Jesus. Honestly, if that's a man, da Vinci had a stroke when he painted 'him'. She does not look masculine in any way. Compare her to the men surrounding her.
There are two Last Supper paintings being used in this narration. Looks like one of them copied Leonardo's, but the faces look different. You can easily tell the difference. And the reference to the bag Judas is holding as possibly the 30 pieces of silver he received for betraying Jesus is simply ridiculous since his betrayal and receipt of the silver hasn't happened yet. There are many other discrepancies in this. Not very well done.
The painting has definitely symbolic representations but we are not sure what are the intended symbols and what are those of the imagination of today, personally I am not fascinated by Da Vinci's paintings but i can understand why the fuzz
The painting is thought to be a depiction of the argument over transubstantiation, when Jesus says This is my body, this is my blood. Those on the right of Jesus accept this as true, those on Jesus'a left are repulsed.

Why are the archways/windows on the left high, but low on the right? Why 10 large pieces of bread on the table, and 6 small pieces (assuming that is bread too), when there are 13 of them? Did they order a table for 26, but all wanted to sit on one side? Or are they looking out a window as well, and setting tables to the wall for the view was normal in those days?
Believe or disbelieve, the figure of John being construed as Mary Magdalene is still very interesting to me. Everyone is reacting to Jesus in some way, but John (or Mary) does appear to be out of place in his reaction, or the lack thereof. In the "Da Vinci Code" we see how you can move the figure to the other side of Jesus where it then interacting with him and thus makes more sense. I don't think it proves Jesus and Mary were married as the book contends. I do think, however, it raises the question of what da Vinci believed. There's another thing I notice. The book points the space between Jesus and Mary as the chalice. Let's assume it does show a chalice, but instead of that proving John is Mary, look at what is near this chalice--the glass of wine Jesus is reaching for. His other hand is reaching for bread. In the negative space on that side, you see the raised finger--divine bread was the mana that fed the Jews in the desert for 40 years. What I get from that is what the Catholics call Transubstantiation--when the mundane bread actually transformed into the body of Christ in the Eucharist. It could be one more layer of da Vinci's meanings.
But why move the figure to the other side of Jesus so they are interacting?? Then move Thomas, Bartholomew, Andrew, Judas, Matthew, Simon, Peter, Mark, Phillip, James, James the son of Alpheus, and Thaddeus.
One fact that most people do not know is that the person sitting as Jesus is the same person sitting as Peter after just two years of alcohol abuse. This was found in my large family Bible that belonged to my Dad.
Observation: For centuries the church teaches this is the Passover celebration where Jesus institutes the so called "eucharist". Well, this is not a Passover table, this is a "Mithraic" table..! In a Passover table there are many elements missing in this table like the roasted lamb, bottles of wine, the order plate with the elements or spices, unleavened bread or "matza" is missing and instead there are loaves of leavened bread which was forbidden during the 7 days feast..! This is the table of Mithras where only wine and leavened bread was offered to "males only". According to the Hebrew scriptures this is a highly pagan observance. Nice origins of the church huh????
This spring I had the opportunity to attend a service where a Jewish representive taught us about the Passover Sadar. As I remember it consisted of salty, bitter, sweet, I think sour food sample (I can't remember the last one) I know it wasn't in that order. Before each there was a Hebrew verse. And after each one it was followed by a taste of wine. It was very interesting. I think the meal is served after the Sadar. I had the opportunity to attend a Passover dinner; my cousin has relatives that are Jewish, the dinner consisted of matza ball soup, Gefilte fish, turkey, side dishes, can't remember everything, it was years ago. But if you ever get a chance to go to either don't hesitate, go.
Jesus joined his followers to celebrate the Jewish Passover.. after Jesus told Judas to go in John 13- 27-30. he had left after the Passover meal . It was then the lords evening meal was implemented by Jesus. This was to grant his faithful followers a place in his kingdom as kings…. So Judas was not at the last supper only the Passover.. Da Vinci had this particular detail wrong… two celebrations not one.
The painting of St. John the Baptist looks nothing like "John" in the Last Supper. The figure in the Last Supper is not a feminine looking man, it's a woman. Compare to his "Head of a Woman."
@hanne. John the Baptist wasn't John the disciple, but agree how this figure is feminine. Always find his paintings a bit eerie and disturbing, but symbolism and codes were very much a feature of art at this time. Holbein excelled at it.
Bread and wine - it's the passover meal, not some random eating together that accidentally foreshadows communion. How many hand does Judas have? - 1 clutching bag, 1 reaching for bread, and an unknown plural number hiding under the table to symbolize deceit. Not much thought went into this analysis.
I'd declare that do to the vast number of different depiction of the "Last Supper". I've never seen a copy let alone the actual real drawing of it. Thus never seen or been able to see those thing's you pointed out. But have on occasion's due to their being depiction's of the real one, had variious thing's in which would be simular ly hard to spot unless scruntinized.
Dear lady with the voice, this is not a polaroid, da Vinci was not there, nor did he interview anyone that was there. If da Vinci could hear all the speculation about this really just OK work, he would get a great laugh, as he has played you all that argue about it.
I'm not a religious person. What I see is a beautiful painting of men, and a woman, conversing while enjoying a meal. Da Vinci was a brilliant man, but he had no positive proof that the supposed last supper happened at all, or in this manner.
All history trough christians convicted Judas for betraying Jesus and the Jews for killing him. But I think that’s totally wrong, since we all now what would have happened if Jesus wasn’t crucified, so we actually have to be grateful. The apogryphes even say that God asked Judas, if he wants to take this burden and he told him „the humans will hate you for that!“ but he didn’t care, „it has to be done!“ was his answer.🙏
Sorry, I'm still not convinced that is John to the right of Jesus. Once you see Mary Magdalene in that figure, the idea just won't go away. And Mary was way more that what the canonical texts tell us. Remember, it was She to whom Christ first revealed Himself. If you research the ancient Egyptian origins of the name, Mary, you might understand. Margot Kinstler's book, "The Moon Under Her Feet," is also most enlightening to the open mind. Incidentally, if someone has seen a musical score in the arrangement of the items on the table, what is it? Tell us more!
Remember, Leonardo painted what HE thought would be nice. He was a Catholic who did not know, thanks to the pope, that he was painting lies he was told growing up. Jesus did NOT have long hair, nor did he dress differently from every other Jew. Mostof the depiction I. The so called Last Supper were Leo’s imagination.
This is what DA VINCI imagines that is how the last supper looked. He was not.there. No one knows whether that figure is JOHN OR MARY. It might have looked completely different.
The REAL secret is that this painting represents the Sun and the twelve houses of the Zodiac. Jesus is the Sun of God. The apostles represent the twelve houses. The four groups of three represent the four seasons of the year. From the left, the sixth person is NOT John. It is Vergo and it is a female, that is represented by Mary Magdelin. In Ezikiel, when he describes his vision of God , he talks about the four faces. They are the fixed houses of the Zodiac. The lion (Leo), The man (Aquarius), The Ox (Taurus) and The Eagle (Scorpio). Just do the research. The truth will set you free!!!

The last supper akways a foodie❤❤🎉
One fact that most people do not know is that the person sitting as Jesus is the same person sitting as Peter after just two years of alcohol abuse. This was found in my large family Bible that belonged to my Dad.
I'm sorry but I see no obvious halo
Christ, sometimes a painting is just a painting...
Not when it's a mastepiece.
@thisone9
That's a matter of opinion.
Not everyone is a fan of Da Vinci, regardless of his varied 'creations'.
@@Logans3Run Not when you've studied symbolism in art over the ages and expressive compositional principles.
@thisone9
"Symbolism" being the operative word based on speculated events, carried out by characters that are more than likely, entirely fictional.
Leonardo had a perspective device to assist him to paint.
Please it wasn’t like the artist was there. The artist was bored and decided to have fun. It wasn’t unusual.
Excellent and thought-provoking video. Thank you for your astounding work.
"We'd like a table for 26, please..."
"But...there's only 13 of you..."
"Yeah but, we all want to sit on the same side of the table..."
This was not a photograph, it is his interpretation! So disturbing.

I know that, but the painting is presented as an example of a "feminine" figure in the video. It doesn't look feminine to me at all.
All it tells us is that nobody was prepared to sit around the table like normal people.
This is only one man’s representation of something that may not have taken place. All man’s imagination.
That doesn't look like a "John" to me.
Fold the picture in half (matching the converging lines together) and then how do the disciples interact?
John's/Mary's hands are calmly folded. Is it because Jesus had already confided in him/her?
St. John the Baptist doesn't look at all feminine or youthful the way Mary Magdalene does.
John the Baptist was Elizabeth’s son, beheaded at the whim of a woman. John the apostle was a different John.
I'm sorry but that's Mary and not John
Dear lady with the voice, this is not a polaroid, da Vinci was not there, nor did he interview anyone that was there. If da Vinci could hear all the speculation about this really just OK work, he would get a great laugh, as he has played you all that argue about it.
Looks like Mary magdoline on his left
“John” is more of a Joanna.
Yeah, even if a very young man, you’d see the shadow of his (John’s) “Adam’s Apple.”
Why are the wine glasses clear?
Because DA VINCI WANTED THEM VLEAR.
You have said nothing about the tablecloth
Why don't we make up whatever we want people to see?
I still think that's Mary. Cheers Rosemary Western Australia 74yrs
Judas was the treasurer so the bag holds the money of all of them, not the 30 pieces. That error invalidates most of your other assumptions
Who was the Membership Secretary?
“ ok, guys, if you want to be in the photo come over to this side of the table “
