The front penal of the plastic box is a concave lens which reduces an object (squeezes the horizontal axis; like a funhouse mirror makes you very tal and slender ) profile when an object is placed behind it (0:32 you can see the profile of the statue as a hazy vertical line), because the back wall consist of horizontal lines there is no effect on its appearance.
Thanks for the review Blake. As a Tenyo collector I appreciate people taking the time to review these items which are considered childish and toy like to most - but a good presentation can make these tricks into little miracles :-) Nice idea with the bill and card by the way!
There is something I learned from Penn and Teller: "If there is only one a trick can be done, that is the way it is done". Notice that the bars are always horizontal. If he put them in a vertical position we would see how the effect is done. The front facing side of the box has tiny-ridges refracts the light onto the sides where it is reflected by the semi-reflective sides reaching the back panel. The light is effectively being diverted around the object in the middle. It forms a little equilateral triangle of reflected light, where whatever is inside this triangle is effectively invisible to us. Very clever I have to say :)
The trick is in that transparent box (apparently) , but actually that box manipulates the light waves which is being reflected from behind the box , basically the light waves coming from behind the box isn't coming straight to your eyes , rather it's forced to take a different route due to some weird effect caused by that box , the result is that the light waves reflected from the statue doesn't reach your eyes , and therefore you can't see it , like when you are walking at night and you can't see nothing cause there no light , It's just my theory , I don't know if i am correct .
Ok I hope you still get this being an older post, but Can you please tell me if you did just a tad editing at one point because you showed the back panel cleanly front and back showing the insert card before putting it on the base and the Statue production? Every other version i have ever seen does not show that (for obviois reason I assume, wink) I'm considering buying this and wondering if it wasnt a small edit how you did what you needed to do?? lol.
at the beginning the statue was behind the blue striped card, when he placed the transparent box and removed the blue striped card shows us, how then place it back but keeping the statue this time in front of the blue strip card, the so called transparent box show you the image of the background but it shows you the images of the edges only that way it keep the center hidden,
The box is a horizontal lines glass, it will show the content inside when it is tilted 90º (vertical), the background is a thick horizontal lines (so it will look like it's completely transparent). the translucent plastic is a linear fresnel lens, its focused at the background.. so anything in front of it is out of focus... you can use lenses to basically see through things. Same effects as with cameras, when you focus at some distant object... things in front of it will be so out of focus that they don't show up in the picture.
0:41 he pushed the object in. Lots of this trick is posted here in youtube, but pushing in something is that is common. Objects are only visible in this box if they are close enough.

I wonder how the box is constructed, I can see it's not just flat planes of transparent plastic. That's the actual tricky part

there's a detachable glass at he back of the glass box that covers up the statue at different times of the videos
i know how you did it. that camera close up at 0:41 gave it away

It pretty much seems to be like blurring but mostly it may be light reflecting on camera
