Alanda screaming “BREAK UP WITH HIM” five minutes into the reaction was extremely satisfying. Hatred for Christian is like a positive litmus test for this movie lmao.
The whole movie is a litmus test for how susceptible people are to cults. I don't hate Dani or Christian, and I feel like they passed a point of no return way before her decision to kill him. The cult was never going to let them go - especially Dani. If she had chosen the other guy to die, she would have failed their loyalty test/entrapment scheme & been placed inside the burning building along with Christian. I think something similar happened to Pelle's "parents" (he said they died in a fire) and Maja's child will probably be taken from her & raised with another couple, to believe he's was orphaned & adopted, just like Pelle.
@@sarahsarahsarah9093 Because he recognized that Dani was damaged and toxic, and didn't want that in his life? It's disgusting how women want men to deal with their problems, but won't stick with a man the minute he shows vulnerability.
@@BusterCherry1 Then he could have, ya know, broken up with her 🤷♀️ I have no issue with her problems being too much for him to deal with but he dealt with it like an asshole. I didn’t perceive his character to be struggling with the vulnerability that situation might bring up in someone but rather just trying to find an “out” for a complicated relationship without actually confronting the hard stuff and expressing his feelings to her.
Jack Reynor has said playing Christian put him in a very dark place, especially because they filmed this whole thing in 2 months. So he heavily invested in self-care because besides the horror, just being in Christian’s head was thoroughly depressing. He ran every day, and went to the gym, read a lot of books, cooked for himself, went to bed early, gave up alcohol, and made sure to get 8 hours of sleep. He said in an interview that he read the script and thought, ‘I can handle the cult stuff, but being the guy who STROLLS to his girlfriend’s apartment after her family got murdered…” He has said most people who recognized him just tell him they loved the movie, but occasionally a certain type of guy will say “you know, I was rooting for Christian,” and he’ll just go “huh…interesting.” 😂
That makes sense! I always think about how playing these characters can mess you up. The crazy thing is Florence Pugh literally starting shooting little women weeks after this movie! Talk about range!
He also was the one who suggested that after he got r*ped by the cult, he should be completely in the nude, because so many damn movies will put female nudity up on display, and he thought it was only fair to make the men uncomfortable for once. He may have played a damn right son of a bitch, but he seems like a cool dude irl.
@@MonyXChanthat’s actually a great point. I “appreciate” (for lack of a better word) Ari and Jack touching on such a sensitive, complex, and even controversial topic not only of r* through coercion and drugs but also of men. Many people believe only women get r* and men can never be victims of these heinous crimes. So to see it portrayed in a film, it felt so gut wrenching and I couldn’t help but sympathize with the character because he was nowhere near in his right mind to even consent to it. I do understand he knowingly went to have s*x, he didn’t want to do it with that woman and he was merely a puppet in that moment. You can just see it in his eyes that he really did not want to be there and ugh I hated that scene so much. It really stuck with me. The whole movie did but that’s one of those scenes that broke me.
You know what’s wild? So the beginning it’s snowing, so maybe around January or so. They talked about the festival being in June at that time, around when Dani FINDS OUT about Christian going. So he already planned to go for around 5 MONTHS without telling her and gaslights her by saying he only decided to go that day. Trash
did they talk about it at the beginning of the movie (Christian and his friends?) There is a time skip between the beginning and whenever they have that party and Dani finds out. But still - trash!!
@@specificsoup yess it’s only a line but Pele is talking about all the women Christian will impregnate in June, plus after the time skip since it’s so sunny it’s at least spring/summer so at least a season had gone by. So we can infer at least 3-5 months had passed
@@rogerromero2663yess they were planning the trip for a long time, he was planning to break up before traveling but was too coward for it. You can see when asked he said 6 months less than Dani, because he tapped out that night her parents died
Oh my gosh I never put that together. Thank you! He is just the WORST. In the extended cut, he's even grosser, and that's saying something with all this.
Florence is an INCREDIBLE actor. Her face conveys *exactly* what Ari Aster wrote in the screenplay, which says Dani has “surrendered to a joy known only by the insane. She has lost herself completely, and she is finally free. It is horrible and it is beautiful."
Can I be real for a second? I feel very lonely sometimes and today started out as one of those days, but I've spent the last like 7 hours watching horror movies with you and I just realized I don't actually feel lonely anymore. I'd just really like to thank you for your content. Your channel makes me feel like I'm watching these movies with a friend.
@@JaSoNfAn222the character was supposed to be emotionless and broken, completely closed off from the world, kind of a wet blanket for the otherwise rowdy friend group. Someone that broken is going to be easily manipulated as her character was. She played it perfectly.
Dani really traded one bad, unhealthy relationship for another. Christian was trash and regularly gaslit and neglected her to the point of abuse, but the cult is no better. They constantly drug Dani to keep her out of her right mind, isolate her from her group, and manipulate her with love-bombing and grooming. In the end, she's only given the illusion of the freedom that she deserves and she doesn't even realize it. That's what makes this movie scary.
It’s not the illusion of freedom that she gets, it’s the illusion of love and family. She really wanted an emotional partner in Christian, she’s very codependent, and it increased after losing her family. She’s terrified of being alone, and now in this crazy cult, she’s happy because she’ll never be alone again.
that was a very precise and illuminating way to put it. The only thing I wonder is the the guy who brought them in, I wonder if he loved her, but then they will all have to go out to seduce strangers so maybe not.
Does wanting to have an emotional partner make her codependent? I don't think she's happy at the end, but it's one of the emotions Ari Aster wants us to know she's feeling
What I like about the movie is that it sort of messes with your interpretation of what the ending is. A lot of people think that this is a happy ending because Dani has found her "family" and isn't suffering anymore. But honestly, that's how cults function. They take someone at the most vulnerable and make them believe that they are "happy" without these certain people. Glad to see you are back and doing better!
Definitely room for a sequel, I think the ending is abrupt. Never watched this movie because it looked boring (in my regretful opinion), but the part where it seemed like someone was wearing the friends skin as a mask left me surprised and wanting more explanation. Anyway of a sequel surfaces I’d watch it in theatre
@@Hey_JamieI have. Lots of folks. Some on reactions of other RUclipsrs, some on social media. There was this whole discourse about whether or not it was a happy ending.
i mean, not to be rude, but most of the people i saw who thought the ending was ‘happy’ were either white women or people with 0 media literacy. there is something really white feminist coded about a white woman getting ‘revenge’ on the people who treated her bad, even tho literally everyone else can see she is brainwashed and completely stripped of her own identity.
@@orangewarm1u clearly didnt got the point of the movie then... they were starting to be brainwashed, and even if they planned to leave they would kill them before like they did with that one couple
As a Nordic person born on Midsummer, I find it so interesting to see how people react to the traditions depicted in the movie. The creators clearly did some excellent research because many things from the naked love spells to the maypole dancing and even the burning of a wooden structure come from real things that are done on that day, of course with none of the death haha. Even the cliff derives from a Nordic legend about "age cliffs" (ättestupa in Swedish). Having grown up and seeing stuff like gathering sets of flowers, and arranging them to make people fall in love with me, as a normal thing, it's fun seeing how strange it is from the outside and definitely perfect material for a horror movie.
I find the rituals and tradition beautiful, and they were beautifully portrayed in this movie (minus the death, LOL). Ari Aster seems to devote a lot of his time to really getting to know the ins and outs of his stories. He definitely did his research here. As someone who has only read about these things, it is nice to get a confirmation from someone of that culture of how close to reality it actually is. Really cool.
@@LibertineDeSadeyes! Even with all the events going on, I disassociated to cope and couldn’t help but think “I still want to go there!” 😂 it’s so idyllic and serene. The festival itself was always so beautiful to me! He did an excellent job of separating the two. You know it’s a real tradition BUT you know this is overdramatized. We get some history and background, but it’s been warped by this cult. This was honestly a very smart ‘anti-fairytale’.
well it looked really beautiful til all the shit started happening. It actually looks like a wonderful festival. I wish Americans had things like that. Well I guess some do, no one in my family tho has traditions of any kind.
I think midsommar does a really good job of making the audience hate Christian and condoning his murder. Despite Christian being an awful person and human, the events leading up to his death (drugging him to being assaulted and make worse decisions) are horrifying and set up to make Dani choose to kill him. It’s a very uneasy ending because we’re sort of happy for Dani finding people that want her but we the cult also got what they wanted by manipulating this vulnerable girl 😭
After I got through the whirlwind of emotions, I sat back and thought about what happens to Dani the day after and that's when the horror really set it. She's gonna come down off all those drugs and the high of being the May Queen (the lovebombing phase), and she's gonna realize not only did they kill all those people, but she essentially killed Christian. She won't be special anymore - she'll just be a worker bee in the hive. They're gonna put her to work in the kitchen and garden, she's gonna sleep in the communal bedroom, she'll never have a committed boyfriend or husband, they're gonna choose who she sleeps with, who she gets pregnant by and when (whether she ever wanted to have kids or not)... And she has no way to leave. They'll kill her if she tries. It's one thing to grow up in a cult believing all this, but she's already been "indoctrinated" to be an individual in the real world. Her only hope for any semblance of happiness is if she's been thoroughly, completely broken and accepts all their ways. Ari Aster did a great job in manipulating us into the ways of the cult too. We all have a day after, where we realize wait, Christian is horrible, but he didn't deserve to be raped and murdered for being a bad boyfriend. But we were rooting for that. At first we're happy for Dani - until we realize what happens after. We have to wake up from the cult indoctrination too. That's some masterful storytelling.
@@lunacouerthe way this exact question kept me up weeks after watching this nightmare. It’s all “fine and dandy” until she comes down from those drugs and reality sets in that she’s alone and stuck with this psychotic cult. She’ll constantly have to be drugged up and then ultimately her life is no longer her own. I really do feel like at the end, Dani had already reached a breaking point because that smile doesn’t seem like one of sheer happiness for finding her tribe. To me, it felt like she kind of accepted the inevitable. Her life was already changing so quickly and drastically but the events that occurred in the movie just sealed the deal. It gave me shivers and still does! And your last paragraph is PERFECT! It really did feel like a rollercoaster and reality hours days later that we also fell into the trap and begin to question ourselves. I surely did!
When I saw this I really didn’t feel happy for her at all, she looked crazy at the end and whilst Christian was a shit boyfriend and a not nice person he didn’t deserve to die
To be fair, the end of the script states that Dani snaps and that she’s completely gone at this point and that watching Christian being burned alive was the breaking point to her old life.
just saying, he chose to take that drug, he chose to sleep with that girl (he knew it was coming), he knew she was about 16, and he did it either for his school work or just because he wanted to. He never seems like a terrible person because he's so damn low key but he's a lying rat bastard who not only is happy to treat her like shit but also steals his friend's project. I didn't want to see him burn up but I didn't feel too bad for him either.
Fun Fact(?)- The Old Male Sacrifice is played by Björn Andrésen, who in the past was a young world famous model (and yes he was unfortunately abused too), he was considered “the Most Beautiful Boy in the World,” and he was the inspiration for some manga/anime characters- including Griffon from Berserk and Dio from Jojo’s
Favorite details: * The first shot shows a tapestry foreshadowing the entire film. * When they walk through the arch into the commune, they walk through the back side. The front side is visible to the Hårga, as if it is a stage curtain the guests are walking through to become the cult's entertainment. * The glass Christian is drinking from in the second table scene where he finds the hair in his food has visibly redder liquid than every other glass, showing Maja has done the blood ritual with his drink. * Terri's face can be seen in the upper left corner of the trees when Dani is being carried on the platform.
watching this in theater was the best experience ever. miss flo ATE DOWN the role. from that opening scene to the micro expressions she did throughout the movie🧑🍳💋
As a Swede I tell people to watch this movie to learn about our culture 😂 But tbf ari aster did his research, everything about the pole and flowers, dresses and dancing is pretty on point. Can't say I ever drank period blood though, I hope.. I have so many photos from my childhood dressed like them, and now when I look at the photos I just think of this film lol
This movie is like a thesis statement on not dragging out being in a relationship that you don't wanna be in. Because it turns living normal life into this experience emotionally.
One of my fave horror in years. I also love how Christian is trash we know this. But the one time he actually is a victim, she catches him and sees him doing something terrible with out the context. Yet overlooks all the other trash he does.
@@Zombina638 well yes. the whole movie shows him as a bad person which he is. but not a single person should've been treated like that with such a crazy death. the movie made u chose at the end and making it seem as Florence was in the right by choosing his fate
Since you're sick, it's probably a good thing to miss that the girl that fed Christian her pubic hair also flavored his drink with her own special flavorings. If you want more specifics - remember that tapestry at 21:15.
I’ve been waiting for this reaction because I knew you’d love it! Glad you’re back. I’d rather deal with a sickness than find myself isolated and stranded in the boonies of some Scandinavian country’s backwoods cult …. No mam, not today….
This was one of my very favorite theater experiences ever! Went with my friend and our screening had these two 70+ women watching together. Now, you'd know within the first 10 minutes if you walked into the wrong theater, but they stayed the entire movie. About every 15 minutes one of the ladies kept saying, "Omg that's terrible!" and it was amazing. One of them went to the bathroom, and when she got back the other lady gave her the greatest recap about all the terrible things that happened. Hope those queens are still out there going to see horror movies. ❤
Florence Pugh is such a power house of a performer. Especially in horror and thrillers. Her performance in this is exceptional and should be studied in acting schools/courses. I also recommend ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ (2022) & ‘Malevolent’ (2018) as well. She is everything in those films.
Alanda, your rage at Christian is every woman’s feeling watching this!🤣 It shows how well the character is written, because you literally can’t stand him in the first five minutes. The directors cut has a few extra scenes with Christian & Dani, and he’s even more of a douche. 😂 Loved your reaction as always!❤
So some things that were not translated in the movie but that adds extra to the film - the banner over the road in the beginning has the slogan bevara Sverige svenskt which translates to keep Sweden Swedish, unsurprisingly a nazi dog whistle, but it speaks to some of the darker undertones of the film - idk if it’s the theatrical or extended edition but at one point Pelle and Christian are discussing Maja and Pelle says she is “byxmyndig” which I think they translate to “old enough” or “adult” (basically telling Christian she’s of age to have s*x). The thing they didn’t translate is that byxmyndig is 15, while it’s still creepy to get with this random 18 year old, she ain’t even 18. (Edit: she’s 16 if she came of age the year before)
thanks for the comment! there's a definite white supremacist element to the film cult and I know that there's strong currents of it in sweden irl as well 😑 thanks for the translations and the context
Idk if anyone pointed it out yet, but when they first arrive to the commune, Pelle goes up to the man, hugs him, and afterwards the man greets the rest of the friends. He shakes all their hands and says welcome but when he gets to Dani he says "Welcome Home" and hugs her and shes the only one he says that to. It's very quick and there isn't any emphasis on it so definitely easy to miss. (This happens at 18:00 in the video) The theory about this is that the whole idea of Dani getting to the Commune was all orchestrated by the Hargas. also at 8:40, the painting above Dani shows a girl kissing a bear on the head. Clearly this is foreshadowing to Christian being put in the bear and Dani saying goodbye to him.
Also Pelle was saying that he was especially excited for her to go, and she hadn’t even originally planned on going. She probably wouldn’t have (at least not with them) if Christian hadn’t mentioned it, but Pelle was already looking forward to her specifically going
I KNEW you would pick up on Christian being trash minutes in! I got so triggered when I first seen this from having an ex that used to gaslight me and made me feel alone while being partnered with them. That ending with the bear suit and being burnt alive, is HORROR. That bear fat only increased the burning and melting onto his flesh.
The scary part of this movie was the most genius: it's a movie about how easy it is to be pulled into a cult. Dani is the prime candidate to be taken in by a cult. She's alone, she's emotionally and mentally vulnerable, and even the horrors she's seen seem perfectly preferable to what she's already been given. Like, we all know that Christian and his buddies are either POS or just did wrong things, but we normally wouldn't condone mutilation and murder. But by the end we're thinking how DESERVED their fates were and how happy we are for Dani until it hits you how easy it was to be pulled into it yourself.
that ending though... "A SMILE finally breaks onto Dani’s face. She has surrendered to a joy known only by the insane. She has lost herself completely, and she is finally free. It is horrible and it is beautiful."
I think the drugs they gave me in the tea put him in a state where he just does whatever someone tells him to because he's confused and can't think clearly. The woman (was her name Ula?) didn't lie to him when he asked what it does- "it opens you to the influence"- he drank it anyway without asking any why it's just for him in particular. Really, I'm surprised the guy lived THIS long, as he has no survival instincts whatsoever. He's an easy mark for just about anything. Then the stuff they made him inhale "for his vitality" gave him an erection. So I'm going to say no, he doesn't want to participate in this. Maybe I think he was flattered by Maja's interest and wanting to cheat on Dani given the opportunity, but I think her being underage and the odd interest of the community hooking him up with her was weirding him out. When he comes to awareness, he's clearly freaked the fuck out. I would not call him a cheater. Unfortunately I'd call him a rape victim.
Fun facts about the film: when they're carrying Dani, the trees and shrubs in the background make up the image of her sister with the tube in her mouth. Also, the paintings all have hints or directly say about what is going to happen. Spoilers for The Invisible Man: Midsommar was one of the three that I love that end on a smiling woman. The VVitch, Midsommar, and The Invisible Man. It is my opinion that they end on a smiling, single woman because there is nothing more frightening/threatening to a man than a happy single woman.
You’re right! I didn’t think about that and I’ve seen all of those films too!! All 3 of these women smiled in the end of their films… for different reasons of course!
I wouldn't say Dani is HAPPY. She is broken. She has been brainwashed and driven mad. Honestly, I would say the same of Thomasin in The VVitch, too. She is a young girl, 16 years old, and is broken down by her families deaths into joining the witches by Black Phillip. She saw herself as damned and figured she may as well enjoy material luxury instead of losing her whole family for NOTHING. Black Phillip never tries to make her a deal BEFORE every member of her family is dead or gone and she has no options. Like, hell yeah, imma smile while flying until I learn that the ability to make me do so is from my dead infant brother. As for the Invisible Man, ABSOLUTELY, yes, good for her.
Women find those smiles frightening/threatening too so uhhhh maybe those smiles are scary cos of the INSANITY and not cos its a Strong Independent Woman smiling or whatever bs? 😂😂😂😂
Couple things you missed - 48:16 look at the trees in the background. See anything? Like her sister’s gas-masked head, maybe? Haha Also when Christian found the pube in his food, you didn’t see that his cup was the only one that was a different color. It was more orange than yellow. Because red had been added. You remember the “love story”….
I was holding off on watching this until I watched the movie with a friend and now that I have _rubs hands together_ time to enjoy another wonderful Alanda reaction!
Ari aster makes you look away and then cuts to something inoffensive once he knows youve covered your face. Then you uncover it so he CUTS to the most disgusting slow-mo detail ever. Genius 😂
Both this movie and your return in general have LONG been awaited, so happy to see you again and that you’re feeling better! And with an HOUR LONG video, you feed us so well. Definitely think Midsommar and Hereditary are sister films. I agree that Hereditary is the more viscerally disturbing and scary, and I think that Midsommar overall is the stronger film. Florence ATE DOWN. See you next week, excited to see what’s on the docket for spooky season! ❤
55:30 the death simon had is called a blood eagle, it’s a supposed type of torture/death from the viking era, it’s also done while they’re still alive… i had to research after seeing it in this and then also in the show “vikings” where it was even more graphic, horrifying but interesting to learn about.
At 20:30 - Dani and Christian were together for four years, but as we heard, Christian was contemplating ending it for over a year and a half. He was planning on leaving Dani (But what if I want her back?) and then Dani's sister annihilated the family. Perhaps he stayed with her out of pity. I'm not letting Christian off the hook for his toxicity, but he's been on the fence on breaking up with her for awhile.
Having Dani constantly worry about her sister and her parents only to have those fears confirmed to a near T is a primal fear that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. I reckon it's worse for people with OCD.
Though the movie doesn’t scare me as much as make me feel uncomfortable, the suicide-murder scene (especially with the music score and the wailing of Dani combined) is genuinely haunting and nothing else comes close to the way that scene in the movie and the way it made me feel. Probably to do with my own mental instability.
The black dude was way too calm about being in that situation (I mean, technically about going in the first place, but whatever lmao) and then he had the nerve to disobey their rules? Lmao come on now. If I walked into that place and saw that I was the only (unambiguously) black person, I would have walked my black ass right back to where I came from.
pretty sure he was never meant to leave there alone, his disrespect for their tradition is just an excuse, but since they're pretty much white supremacist eugenistic pagans.. I have no clue why they'd let him go..
Ari Aster said that Hereditary is about grief and Midsommar is about break-ups. Both movies are VERY disturbing, but Midsommar resonates more with me and I enjoy watching it more than Hereditary. For sure, you were 100% correct to not watch this movie while nauseous. Glad we did not get to see you get sick in your reaction.
I saw an ad for the film, thought it was interesting. Two years after a coworker told me how it scarred her immensely. I rented it, couldnt finish. Then bought it the next day. I think its beautiful.
Spooky lil fact, what Simon went through is a blood eagle. A viking execution involving the ribs, back and lungs being aired out while the victim is still alive so... Simon may have been alive for maybe five or seven minutes before blood loss. Sorry Alanda!
Why would anyone want to be part of any of this? The whole commune lacks diversity. (I know they are in Sweden, but still!) No running water. No electricity. No Wi-Fi. All of the makings of crazy.
@CC-si3cr I don't think people go to places like Namibia, China, Russia, Iraq, Cameroon, etc for diversity. Kinda makes the trip pointless if you're looking to experience the native culture lol
So glad you finally did this one! I did like Hereditary more just in that it scared the living 💩 out of me, but I am so impressed with Ari for managing to make bright, sunny, vibrant scenes scary! Also really appreciate that he didn’t set his “foreigners are scary” kind of story in a developing country or one with people of color as the antagonists (looking at you Eli Roth 😒). Best breakup movie ever!
At 48:42 -The flowers are breathing. How are they doing that? Remember that all of the dancers for the May Queen competition and Christian are very high. The flower isn't breathing. It's the bent perception due to the drugs. But it is a cool cinematic trick, either way.
Simon’s grotesque fate is something known as the “Blood Eagle”. It’s a legendary execution technique from the Viking era. There are writings describing it and I think even a visual depiction or two in scrollwork or tapestries. I refer to it as legendary though because I don’t believe there is much proof it was ever actually carried out and I believe that the few depictions were made later in the Viking period centuries after it was supposedly done to anyone.
The effed up part is that you are still alive when this is done to you. You can even see Simon’s lungs inflating and deflating because he’s still alive, barely. 🥺
The director’s cut manages to make Christian’s awfulness even MORE overwhelming - and also makes it clearer that he understood and consented to take part in the sex ritual BEFORE they gave him any drugs.
It's still r*pe. At the time he had sex, Christian was so drugged he was barely able to speak. He was in no condition to consent in the moment. It's the same as someone agreeing to sex early on a date, but is blackout drunk a few hours later when someone has sex with them. If no consent can be given in the moment, sex shouldn't happen.
@@ShortThe1st Oh for sure, since they clearly didn't fully explain what the ritual would entail. But it at least gives him more definitive agency in the decision to cheat on Dani, and makes his mercenary nature all the bolder (since he partially agrees to the ritual so he can write about it in his thesis).
When I first watched the director's cut, I was like "OMG...he's actually evil. Why didn't you leave these parts in?? Now it's so clear he's abusive and wanted to cheat on her!" Later I realized how smart it was to leave it out. The theatrical cut makes us question ourselves on how we could be ok with him essentially being raped and murdered. He's awful, but does that mean he deserves that? Are we really going there? The director's cut gives us too much of an easy out, with how villainous he was and making it seem like it was _all_ consensual. We miss the point that once he was drugged, not once being told how this was gonna go down, it was rape. And we definitely needed to look at that. This movie really did open up the dialogue about male rape, and I'm glad it did.
Oh I also forgot to point out that the director made this movie due to his own breakup with his ex and dealing with it. Which is wild. He’s basically Dani but without the blood and violence lol.
Am I the only one that noticed with these midsummer reactions that women and gay folks never make fun of Dani's crying at the beginning of the movie? When it's straight men reacting they always say that she has an "ugly cry" like she didn't just find out her entire family's dead 😐
Actually, there’s been some clarification that he was dead but his lungs looked like they were moving because of the drugs. It’s like the flowers moving.
My theory of how dani got into the cult at the end was always that she had no one to share her pain with , she’s alone , her boyfriend and friends are emotional monsters , she needed someone , anyone , sadly that was the cult , when the elders jumped off the cliff and the guy didn’t die and they all started screaming to “share his pain “ , I feel like Dani started to get sucked in , she was vulnerable, that’s how cults gets you even in real life , they target your weakness some of them even do mandatory fasting to even weaken the person , so at the end especially when she see’s her boyfriend having s3x and all the villagers gather around to scream to “share her pain “ , that was the lock in for her
Dani will suffer the worst; her mind has broken, but she will come to, and when she does she will not only have to realize that she was party to all of this, but she's to be a captive breeder for the cult who is performative in their feelings without having to be genuine about them. We don't even know anything about this cult and neither does she. Her nightmare continues. It's one of the most terrifying endings I've seen in a long time.
This movie always makes you immediately regret getting what you want for the characters. Like yeah we want her to have a family but this family makes her a murderer. Yeah we want Christian to feel bad for his inaction but then they take away his ability and agency entirely.
Alanda coming through with her longest reaction yet girl thank you so much made my morning literally just woke up and smiled. Happy your back and feeling well we all missed you. If you decide to I know it's not really the format of the channel anymore but Chucky seasons one and two are on peacock season 3 first four episodes will air Oct 3rd I believe it's so good just as good as the movies more stories to get into more full circle moments for Andy and Kyle and finally glen and Glenda return won't say much more but Jennifer Tilly shines the most in season two she owns it. The strike has haunted production on the last four episodes of the new season till it's resolved of course hopefully soon. I'm sure it's okay to react to the first two seasons just not the new one yet.
Great reaction Alanda, I missed you and am so glad you’re feeling better, you should add practical magic, witches of eastwick, and assassination nation (strike dependent of course) to the list ❤
I've seen this movie in theaters and it was one of the best horror movies I've seen in a long time. The writing, the directing, the acting, cinematography *chef's kiss* Bravo! 👏🏾
Problem is Florence is now part of the cult, so she has to suffer in her own way moving forwards now. 😔 If only she talked to that friend at the start a lil' more. EDIT: my favourite theory is that, as explained before the sacrifice, the swedish friend had brought them all there intentionally so it stands to reason that perhaps Florence's family was less 'murder suicide' and more 'murder', considering how duct taped the sisters tube-mask was.
I don't know if you have watched Fifth Element or not, but you should give it a watch! Chris Tucker is hilarious! Also, thank you for being a sunshine in my life. I've started rewatching all of your videos a few days ago and it makes me so happy. My mom passed away last year, and we were very close so still going through many emotions about that but watching your videos can give me a smile on my face.
Florence definitely deserved an oscar for this performance! I don't think I've ever seen an actor/actress cry that well, to the point I could feel the pain. She was robbed!
i love watching certain movies with my cousin reactors because yall can really break down what i might miss.. when the other side watches a black movie, all they do is talk bad about the people (not even their charaters or roles)... thank you
all the characters except florence are students. it makes sense they wouldnt be reacting normally because they came in with an open mind (nearly) ready for anything. anthropology takes a lot from the mindset of viewing without obstructing so they were more willing to ignore red flags for the sake of research. meanwhile florence is the only person not there to study
I like watching these videos as I get ready in the morning to combat the coming anxiety of the day and particularly the day at work, and this hour long video ("Yes! Finally Midsommar!) being posted like an hour and a half before I'm supposed to be at work? I accept the risk and thank you for it Ms. Parker. Feel better soon!
this movie has shed a lot of light on a recent relationship and seeing this review reminded me... we all deserve a man/woman/person who will love us thru hard times, remembers our birthday, takes us to family things/weddings. fuck christian. love what you do here beautiful
Glad you're feeling a bit better Alanda. Great to see you back and doing movie reactions again!! Hope you can do a reaction video on Cobweb. It's got vibes of The Boy, Malignant and Hereditary to it. It's creepy af. Should have been released at Halloween instead of Summer, as it's set around Halloween. Anyone, gonna sit back now and enjoy this video now. Saw Midsommer a couple of years ago, but this is worth watching for your reactions alone 😀
Christian’s feelings aside, he was clearly drugged into doing that. And I can’t entirely recall the details, (because this whole film is an acid trip in the best and worst ways), but there was a cut(?) out scene where he made it clear he didn’t want to be with Maja.
I find it very questionable when people root for his demise "because he's an asshole" and completely abandon the fact that he WAS drugged, and WAS raped, AND THEN BURNED ALIVE! 🤣 All that "go girl, you deserve better" shit should go out the window when you look at the particulars.
@@reservoirdude92you can feel sorry that he was drugged and assaulted and hate him as a person, you know. i personally didn’t feel sorry that he died but i did feel sorry that he was drugged and forced to have sex with maya.
@@reservoirdude92imagine if the roles were reversed. I wonder would people had made a fuss if it was a woman being forced like Christian was? It’s very easy since men are easy prey to pick on more.
This was an "in your bones and blood" disturbing kinda a movie. The movie poster is what made me wanna watch this movie. Florence's face is so expressive. When I finally did watch this foolishness, all I could think about was the following: 1) Does anyone ever get away from this weirdo cult? 2) Why don't they eat FOOD? I was so sick of all of their flower meals. 3) Where is the dishwashing hut? They use so many glasses and plates. 4) Are they all botanists? All of 'em seem to know a lot about what flowers can do. Like the movie "Precious", I never need to see this movie ever again.
"i dont give a muthafuckin fuck!" was my favorite line of this 😂 i think i remember watching it and it being such a clusterfuck that i hated it..bless your beautiful mind for finding the good in this horrific movie! Dont leave us waiting so long PLEASE and get well soon ❤
The commune was expecting Dani because she was supposed to become Pelle's partner. You can see hints at this throughout the movie, one of them is when they talk about their zodiacs, she's a cancer while he's a taurus, a preferable match. Pelle succeeds in his mission to not only bring someone into the cult but a partner as well.
Alanda screaming “BREAK UP WITH HIM” five minutes into the reaction was extremely satisfying. Hatred for Christian is like a positive litmus test for this movie lmao.
I call Midsommar my “red flag movie” - based on how people react to Christian 😅 🚩
I think something similar happened to Pelle's "parents" (he said they died in a fire) and Maja's child will probably be taken from her & raised with another couple, to believe he's was orphaned & adopted, just like Pelle.
very that! I’ve watched some people (men) react to this movie and immediately hate dani and side with christian… it’s extremely concerning
@@sarahsarahsarah9093
Because he recognized that Dani was damaged and toxic, and didn't want that in his life?
It's good that he resented his character so much and recognizes Christian's toxicity, but still played him so well.
And supposedly it was his idea to run around naked during the ending too
He also was the one who suggested that after he got r*ped by the cult, he should be completely in the nude, because so many damn movies will put female nudity up on display, and he thought it was only fair to make the men uncomfortable for once.
Also, they were together four years AND TWO WEEKS which implies he also forgot about their anniversary and she let it slide
You are not alone...
I think that's the same for about half the folks watching. Humans like socialising and when there ain't no socialising these are next best thing.
Same 🫶
Florence Pugh should have totally been nominated for this movie.
peak contained acting
Sadly the academy keeps overlooking the horror genre.
Same for toni collette in hereditary😩
I totally disagree Pugh was one note the whole movie , depressed an sobbing .
Show me some range girl
Eh
Yeah, Midsommar is mad tragic. All the sunshine, flowers, beauty and empathy make it all the more dark and unsettling. Brilliant film.
Have never once seen anyone interpret the end as being happy.
@@Hey_JamieI have. Lots of folks. Some on reactions of other RUclipsrs, some on social media. There was this whole discourse about whether or not it was a happy ending.
@@Hey_Jamiei have seen a lot lol
i mean, not to be rude, but most of the people i saw who thought the ending was ‘happy’ were either white women or people with 0 media literacy.
there is something really white feminist coded about a white woman getting ‘revenge’ on the people who treated her bad, even tho literally everyone else can see she is brainwashed and completely stripped of her own identity.
Directing a movie that manages to be scary in garish broad daylight looks really really challenging, but Ari Aster somehow manages it.
The original Wicker Man is much better. As if anyone would hang around after two people leapt off a cliff, clapped on by a crowd of people.
@@orangewarm1where the hell else are they supposed to go, i’m sure they’d be stopped no matter what
I would say this movie is more unsettling and disturbing than scary, I felt uncomfortable watching
@@orangewarm1u clearly didnt got the point of the movie then... they were starting to be brainwashed, and even if they planned to leave they would kill them before like they did with that one couple
@@kels154do you mean the cult members or the guests? Dani was the only guest to get brainwashed
Sounds like you grew up around a cult. The stuff you just described is not normal or ok. Sounds sick
I always knew the Swedes were up to something and this movie confirmed it 😂
Just kidding, greetings from Finland 😊

So that's why Dead Meat called him the most beautiful something in the world.
Favorite details:
* The first shot shows a tapestry foreshadowing the entire film.

This movie is like a thesis statement on not dragging out being in a relationship that you don't wanna be in. Because it turns living normal life into this experience emotionally.
Hell is other people.
One of my fave horror in years. I also love how Christian is trash we know this. But the one time he actually is a victim, she catches him and sees him doing something terrible with out the context. Yet overlooks all the other trash he does.

“Am I in the cult?”😅 Glad you’re feeling better Alanda! It was worth the wait ❤️
Now that youve seen the movie, it really adds new light to Pele saying "my parents burned up in a fire."

Since you're sick, it's probably a good thing to miss that the girl that fed Christian her pubic hair also flavored his drink with her own special flavorings. If you want more specifics - remember that tapestry at 21:15.

How did they react to *that* scene 😂
@melissarose597 It was terrible and they could not believe it was happening, with an oh my goodness thrown in for good measure! ❤️
That is so iconic
Florence Pugh is such a power house of a performer. Especially in horror and thrillers. Her performance in this is exceptional and should be studied in acting schools/courses. I also recommend ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ (2022) & ‘Malevolent’ (2018) as well. She is everything in those films.
I watched my first Pugh movie without even knowing it 😅 She's great in Fighting With My Family.
I really enjoyed both of those movies because of her performance in both.
The faces she makes in this are truly mesmerizing. She’s so expressive.
Convinced that her smiling at the end is her brain/psyche officially cracking after all she’s been through
I had to pause and laugh for two days after she said 'its just eating plates of flowers and then a sacrifice!". Literally walked away
So some things that were not translated in the movie but that adds extra to the film
- the banner over the road in the beginning has the slogan bevara Sverige svenskt which translates to keep Sweden Swedish, unsurprisingly a nazi dog whistle, but it speaks to some of the darker undertones of the film
- idk if it’s the theatrical or extended edition but at one point Pelle and Christian are discussing Maja and Pelle says she is “byxmyndig” which I think they translate to “old enough” or “adult” (basically telling Christian she’s of age to have s*x). The thing they didn’t translate is that byxmyndig is 15, while it’s still creepy to get with this random 18 year old, she ain’t even 18. (Edit: she’s 16 if she came of age the year before)
thanks for the comment! there's a definite white supremacist element to the film cult and I know that there's strong currents of it in sweden irl as well 😑
thanks for the translations and the context
I have been WAITING for this one since she watched Hereditary. These are my comfort movies 😌
The police are on their way.
(This happens at 18:00 in the video)
The theory about this is that the whole idea of Dani getting to the Commune was all orchestrated by the Hargas.
also at 8:40, the painting above Dani shows a girl kissing a bear on the head.
"no i don't wanna do poppers right now" lmaooo ALANDA!!
Ari Aster is a talented director. But, he's also a sick lunatic. Great reaction! 👍🏿
that ending though...
Spoilers for The Invisible Man:
Midsommar was one of the three that I love that end on a smiling woman.
@@rincaimo812 it's also very creepy that Black Philip makes her sign even though she's illiterate.
That's not happiness, don't associate a smile with just joy.
This and 'hereditary ' are two of the most innovative horror movies of the last decade.
“Look at this stupid bastard stumbling over” has me ROLLINGG🤣🤣😭
Couple things you missed - 48:16 look at the trees in the background. See anything? Like her sister’s gas-masked head, maybe? Haha
Also when Christian found the pube in his food, you didn’t see that his cup was the only one that was a different color. It was more orange than yellow. Because red had been added. You remember the “love story”….
I was holding off on watching this until I watched the movie with a friend and now that I have _rubs hands together_ time to enjoy another wonderful Alanda reaction!
Florence can do no wrong. I have never been disappointed by a performance from her.
For a less upsetting horror with miss Flo - Malevolent 2018
If I walked into that place and saw that I was the only (unambiguously) black person, I would have walked my black ass right back to where I came from.
he clearly only hangs out with white people though so he probably lost that sense. could never be me! 😂😂
pretty sure he was never meant to leave there alone, his disrespect for their tradition is just an excuse, but since they're pretty much white supremacist eugenistic pagans.. I have no clue why they'd let him go..
You are so adorable. You said all the thoughts in my brain during this reaction! Loved it and can't wait to see more. I love this movie so much.
"I don't wanna do poppers right now!" When I say my soul left my body laughing when you said that! I so adore your reactions!
Alandaaa, you've been truly missed!! I'm happy you're feeling (kinda) better now, hope everything is ok around there ❤
Ooo girl talk your shit! "visual journeys that are as pretty as they are poisonous" I LOVE that line
I'm late, but welcome back!!! So glad to see your face again! Glad you're feeling better, hope you continue to feel better.
This movie was batshit crazy in every sense of the word.
@@CC-si3crthey have electricity, as there was a part where they say they’re going to watch Austin powers
We are used to horror movies being dark and dimly lit, this was the absolute opposite
The director’s cut manages to make Christian’s awfulness even MORE overwhelming - and also makes it clearer that he understood and consented to take part in the sex ritual BEFORE they gave him any drugs.
I mean even with him consenting before the drugs being applied it's still a very fucked thing to do and feels very date rapey.
Now it's so clear he's abusive and wanted to cheat on her!"
Later I realized how smart it was to leave it out.
@@lunacouer Nah... nothing he did in either version justified burning him alive. Anyone who felt Christian deserved it fell into an artistic trap.
At 31:33 check out hor Danni and Pele are seated, and whats positioned above their heads. The foreshadowing in this movie is masterful.
WOW! That's amazing!
This movie is both so good and so traumatizing at the same time. Glad to hear you are feeling better!!
Damn man. Toni Colette, Florence Pugh, Mia Goth and much more actresses and actors that deserve Oscars and they don't get It-
Simon wasn’t dead when Christian saw him. They gave him a blood eagle. You could see his lungs breathing
Actually, there’s been some clarification that he was dead but his lungs looked like they were moving because of the drugs. It’s like the flowers moving.
@@TheBrookelynChickthat’s not how a blood eagle works
The blood eagle doesnt work. Its a myth @Hey_Jamie
I was lucky to find the script before i got to see the movie...it reads more graphic and disturbing but so well written
What a weird thing to want to do. Instead of just watching the movie you want to read it. Nope. Not in a book, but the script. Odd.
My theory of how dani got into the cult at the end was always that she had no one to share her pain with , she’s alone , her boyfriend and friends are emotional monsters , she needed someone , anyone , sadly that was the cult , when the elders jumped off the cliff and the guy didn’t die and they all started screaming to “share his pain “ , I feel like Dani started to get sucked in , she was vulnerable, that’s how cults gets you even in real life , they target your weakness some of them even do mandatory fasting to even weaken the person , so at the end especially when she see’s her boyfriend having s3x and all the villagers gather around to scream to “share her pain “ , that was the lock in for her
I STAYED UP ALL NIGHT FOR THIS AM I CRAZY?!?? IDCCCC im here Alandaaa❤❤❤❤❤❤ pls get better soon!!
"That's part of your seduction tactic?" 😂 Meanwhile, you missed homegirl doing blood magic when she put her period blood in his lemonade!
Your hair is always gorgeous . Stay slaying girl. Love your reviews. Glad u are feeling better
Pay attention, Pelle wears a crown without flowers, he's the May King
When i get sick i look like something u see in a tim burton movie. Alanda here looking flawless as always.
Live is not fare😢
ALANDA I CANT BELIEVE YOU WATCHED THIS 😭😭 this movie is how I found out I was not his strongest soldier 😩
If I had watched it just one day sooner it woulda been the END OF ME 😭😭 I honestly don’t know how I made it 💀
This movie always makes you immediately regret getting what you want for the characters.
You chose the perfekt outfit & styling for this movie..👍🏾💥🔥😂😘
I've seen this movie in theaters and it was one of the best horror movies I've seen in a long time. The writing, the directing, the acting, cinematography *chef's kiss* Bravo! 👏🏾
Problem is Florence is now part of the cult, so she has to suffer in her own way moving forwards now. 😔
If only she talked to that friend at the start a lil' more.
This movie was a trip to see in the theatres. Great vfx!
"i don't wanna think about that when I lay down and go to sleep tonight"...
me: whew chile... just wait.
“I don’t wanna do poppers right now!” AHHHH I SCREAMED
This just made my day! Happy you’re back and feeling better! Thank you for your videos they really brighten my day
One of my friends got dumped on Halloween so we decided to watch this movie and I will say the ending was kinda cathartic for her that night
Christian’s feelings aside, he was clearly drugged into doing that. And I can’t entirely recall the details, (because this whole film is an acid trip in the best and worst ways), but there was a cut(?) out scene where he made it clear he didn’t want to be with Maja.
Then again, he didn't want to be with or cared for his own girlfriend either lol
@@justjdnltrust me, he is a gaslighting jerk, I won’t deny that. Still doesn’t change how he was pretty clearly drugged and raped
I find it very questionable when people root for his demise "because he's an asshole" and completely abandon the fact that he WAS drugged, and WAS raped, AND THEN BURNED ALIVE! 🤣
All that "go girl, you deserve better" shit should go out the window when you look at the particulars.
When I finally did watch this foolishness, all I could think about was the following:
1) Does anyone ever get away from this weirdo cult?
2) Why don't they eat FOOD? I was so sick of all of their flower meals.
3) Where is the dishwashing hut? They use so many glasses and plates.
4) Are they all botanists? All of 'em seem to know a lot about what flowers can do.
Like the movie "Precious", I never need to see this movie ever again.
"i dont give a muthafuckin fuck!" was my favorite line of this 😂 i think i remember watching it and it being such a clusterfuck that i hated it..bless your beautiful mind for finding the good in this horrific movie! Dont leave us waiting so long PLEASE and get well soon ❤
the girls danced, laughed, cried and wailed with dani, became her true friends
The commune was expecting Dani because she was supposed to become Pelle's partner. You can see hints at this throughout the movie, one of them is when they talk about their zodiacs, she's a cancer while he's a taurus, a preferable match. Pelle succeeds in his mission to not only bring someone into the cult but a partner as well.
