I feel you're getting ripped depending on the QUALITY of your fish! The $1/pound charge is too high to me. That should be "eaten" by the wholesaler. We are getting $3.00 /pound in Hawaii for 100 pound bigeyes, but double that for sashimi quality fish. The fact that you got $10 a pound on one fish and $3 on another goes to show quality is everything. Hawaii has a fisherman direct auction where the commission is 10% on sale price, not by weight. Maybe the problem is just the way your distribution works in your area or just very few options. I agree with others. You should contact local Japanese restaurants or poke shops to buy directly from you! That's what's done in Hawaii on the outer islands like Maui. But I do agree with you that commercial fishing is a rough gig! Long hours, with little reward. You gotta do it for the love.
I believe your 100% genuine when you did this video. I watched the show also and I seen it as low as $6 a pound for them also and I don't know if it matters the region if it sells for more up there because they do mention that some of their Tuna's go to Japan. I would like to see your input on that also. I been watching for a couple of months now and I enjoy your videos. You're doing a great job thanks.
I fish lobster and halibut in Canada. Seeing shows about it and how blowin out of proportion it can be is crazy. People don't see of of the harsh reality of fishing. Nothing is guaranteed in the industry. People don't see the days where you go and catch nothing. And when you do it's drastically less that we get paid compared to store prices and prices you may see on shows.
Do you guys always tail-rope your catch? If you drag them forward into the current for at least 30mins the meat quality increases for sure. Might get you a buck or two extra per pound.
They don't, not really. You only hear the big numbers during the first big auction of the year. The large purchase price is more symbolic than anything. It's a marketing gimmick because you get international advertisement when you do it. It's an investment that is anything but indicative of the market.
The wicked tuna characters make vast incomes from piloting airplanes and fixing exotic cars, not commercial fishing . Like everything else in life, do your homework before you decide what's real or not .
@saltwaterfishinguniversity lol I got some tuna friends here on the north shore of Massachusetts. Just saying . They absolutely do it for the fishing the money helps but they like you will always be fishing .
The value of Tuna is based on fat content. Fishing in NC will never get anywhere near the money that fish caught up north will. Tuna migrate North in Spring/Summer and South in Fall/Winter. So fishing for Tuna Connecticut to Maine get way more money than anywhere South. Tuna swim North then just feed and get fat for the migration South. Fat content is highest up North. Value of Tuna is highest up North.
Wrong we get shit prices here in mid coast maine all season, these buyers ( consignment leaches) have a different excuse everyday on why your fish is too big too red markets full markets empty too round not round enough blah blah blah bullshit
Terrible prices up and down the coast the last few years. Too many factors at play, but farmed fish the exchange rate, and the popularity of the show has made it so I don't even go anymore.

I’m a commercial fisherman in Alaska. They are currently paying 8$ a pound for hook and line king salmon
who is ''they''? lol
@ The fish buyers Yakutat Seafoods in my case
You actually did well a lot of fish being sold in RI this summer got sub $2.00.
@@captpepin Ouch. Terrible.

Great job guys
I hate bs and congratulations on the fish but the lies being told on tv is the death of tv.
@@jerimahjohnson8698 Yep, trying to keep it real.
@@jerimahjohnson8698 100% I haven't watched anything on discovery in probably 10 years. I'm one of the earliest cord cutters out there.
Great video yall 🤙🏻🤙🏻
As usual commercial fishing is a dicey endeavor. Not to many billionaires fishing for a living.
So true!
I love fishing. One of my favorite things to do. However I’d hate to do it for a living. Those are some long days
10 bucks per pound in California if you are lucky and the fish is in awesome condition
40k per episode is where it's at.. I know exactly how much you CAN'T make doing this.
How much do those net boats in the Mediterranean make when they catch 10,000 2lb bluefin?
Sounds like rudy is making the real $$ 😂

Seems to be a lot of debate on that. We’ve heard both sides a lot.
I would hate to lose a catch to a shark, or try wrestling it in the boat to keep it from a shark. Heard horror stories about sharks and caught tuna.
@@chuck.reichert83tuna, swordfish, heck even a few divers 😂
It's stupid how those things get auctioned off in Japan for 7 figures

And if you look up chartering one of their boats it’s 2000 a day. If you catch a fish they retain the money less charter. That’s if you catch one
I don’t believe this… No way your getting $1500 per fish.. You’d lose money even on days you caught fish.
Y’all should do a P&L session on your whole business model including charters, RUclips ref, etc. We’d love to see that!!
Will do!!
I got 5 sounds like Forest Gump
your net money you actually lost a crap load. you grossed 10k, probably lost 50k net
You need some japanese friends. Cut out the middle guy.
We’re taking introductions! 😂
