    Edit: It turns out the listing is real and he has since updated it a bit. It is a Fender "Flame" model which is very similar to the Fender Esprit in style.

      It’s so funny you were looking at this guitar. I almost bought a Squier Espirit on reverb this morning. These kinda remind me of of the Roadstars with the maple cap and top binding. My first electric I bought with my own money was a hideous sea foam green Roadstars II with original Floyd. Awesome guitar.

    Of all the different solid body Fender shape styles the flame is actually the rarest, fewer than 1000 exist. The esprit was reissued by squire later. The flame and esprit inspired the later Robin Ford model
    Their original Schaller pick ups ROCK!
    They’re also fender’s first ever set neck.
    Google ‘fender master series’ there’s a great website.

  • @brendenpavao2071
    @brendenpavao2071 4 года назад +24

    The Flame and Esprit were two different Gibson fighters from the Master Series. It's tough to spot the differences when they aren't side by side, and there's a lot of confusion about them. They were designed by Dan Smith and made in Japan. They both have chambered bodies, set necks, and 24 3/4" scale lengths. The Flame is around the size of a Les Paul, and its cutaways are offset like an SG. The Esprit's cutaways are symmetrical, and their size is closer to something like a 339. They're both really cool guitars. There was also the D'Aquisto, which was a straight up jazz box. The D'Aquisto Ultra seemingly had no pickup because its pickguard was its pickup, but I digress.
    It's a pretty good price if the ad is legit. It's tough to say with one picture posted by a brand new account. This one is a bit of an oddball. It looks like a Standard because of the dot inlays, tuners, and tailpiece. The mini switch usually only came on the Elites and Ultras. I've seen a couple more like that though. The Master Series was sort of pulled from the market abruptly in 1986 and sold at closeout prices. I assume they were just using what they had available at this point. Fender was good for that kind of stuff. They started selling the Esprit Ultras as the Robben Ford the next year. They discontinued those in 1993, and in 1994 they came out as Custom Shop models. Those were discontinued in 2003.
    Squier released their own Master Series for 2005, which included the Esprit. Dan Smith designed the M-80 for this series too, which was another unique design that came with your choice of a bolt on or set neck. There's also the Chambered Tele and Thinline Tele, which were both dual humbucker, set neck 24 3/4" scale guitars. They were all designed along the same lines as the original Master Series, and they're all really underrated, underappreciated guitars.
    I think that about covers the whole Master Series family tree.

    • @stephen3164
      @stephen3164 4 года назад +2

      Brenden Pavao - were the Esprit and Flame offered at the same time, or did one model replace the other?
      I remember that Squier line - it was so out of left field to make “Gibson competition” guitars with the Squier label. Fender never really outdid Gibson at their thing, and Gibson never outdid Fender at their game. You’d think they would have each learned to stay in their lane.

    • @brendenpavao2071
      @brendenpavao2071 4 года назад +3

      @@stephen3164 They were both sold from 1983-1986, and then it was just the Esprit/Robben Ford/Esprit from there. Squier had the Series 24 guitars the year prior to the Master Series too, and they were all basically rebranded DeArmonds.
      I always thought it was cool that both Gibson and Fender were at least willing to play the other's game at different points in history. It resulted in some really interesting guitars from both sides. There are quite a few of them that I'd like to own, even if it's mostly for novelty and conversation's sake.

      @@stephen3164 Oddly enough, an Epiphone EM-2 Prophecy just showed up locally on Facebook Marketplace for $300. It's extra tempting after this conversation. I know much more about pricing Fenders and Squiers, but this seems like a pretty great deal for one of these.

    • @stephen3164
      @stephen3164 4 года назад

      Brenden Pavao - not sure the value on the Prophecy but they’re cool looking guitars you don’t see often. That said, I think some “tv show/commercial kids band” had one as a prop and it was cringeworthy. I shouldn’t judge a guitar based on seeing it on tv used as a prop, but that’s what I think when I see them. :-/ But they are unique and uncommon.

    • @texanfournow
      @texanfournow 4 года назад +1

      @@brendenpavao2071 If it's the blue EM-2 Prophecy, $300 is what they sold for new. They have Epiphone ceramic active pups and no tremolo. For $400, they sold a black flame version with a FR tremolo. Getter harder to find these for sale; even new, I don't think they sold many. I briefly had the blue std. model. I currently have two Korean-made EM-2s made back in the early 90s. They both have H/S/H pups with FR-style tremolo. My black one has upgraded APC pups which are outstanding. There is a black one from the Korea era on Ebay now for $220 with what appear to be original pups and also a red one for $240, and a handful of blue (non-trem) and black trem Prophecys. To me, all EM-2s are bargains and fun.

    I am a longtime Fender Flame fan, and own two of them, a Standard model with the dot inlays, and one of the Ultra models with block inlays that came with a Kahler. They are great guitars in their own right, and because of the scale length, construction, and heft, Gibson players usually take to them right off. The one in the photo/listing isn't stock. On stock Flames, the pickup have some unique mounting, with two screws on the low end of the pup, and one in the middle on the high end. The one in the picture shows more traditional type humbuckers. It looks like this started out as a Standard, because of the dot inlays. The Standards only have one switch on them for pickup selector. The higher end model had a coil split switch, and it looks like whoever modded this guitar was going for that same kind of thing. Again, they're great guitars, but I'd try for one closer to stock to really get an honest feel/review. As a side note, with a name like "Flame" trying to look for them with a search engine is a pain, usually I get truer results using something like "Fender Master Series Flame"

    Not surprised about the shop not knowing what it is and making a guess of it. Lots of the mid-80s Fenders from Japan had no domestic literature about them other than an odd or small mention in the Fender catalogs of the era. Sometimes the shop just doesn't know what they have or the model is really obscure and they don't do much research on them.

    the color difference in those fender monitors is driving me insane - when you first got them, i didn't think it was a big deal, but now that they sit right behind you, you can see the difference a mile away!

      I think you mean Gibson Monitors, they are supposed to resemble a tobacco sunburst Les Paul.
      And I agree, once Austin pointed out the differences it is a sight that cannot be un-seen.
      It wouldn't hurt to separate them, in real life a pair of monitors wouldn't be used sitting right next to each other, they need at least 3 or 4 feet of separation to work well.

    I live in MA, and back in the day someone used to post a Twin Reverb Reissue once a week on CL for $100-$200.
    I bit many times, on the off chance that maybe it was real and maybe the amp just needed some love.

    Hi Trog, you've come across other sketchy ones in the fairly recent past from xxx Gear Outlet this, or xxx Gear Emporium that, and the like, whether it's the instrument itself or the newly created version of the seller name, and other related clues. Have you noticed this? Thanks for all you do!

    Hey Trogly - that isn't an Espirit, it's a Fender Flame Standard.
    Very similar models, but the flame had a slightly smaller body with offset cutaways like an SG, whereas the Espirit was slightly larger and had symmetrical inlays like an ES-335.

    Buy that Fender Flame at 900, if possible. After the additional pictures, it seems in good condition.

    There was an obscure jag bass that was strung in guitar octave low Open E (not six strings bass tuning)
    Reissued in the 2000’s I think
    I really want one, and baritones are on the way back in, why not start LOW

    Hey Trogly, so I’m trying to help my friend and Gibson SG with a bigsby, as he already has an epiphone SG and needs an upgrade. Do you know any guitar that has a feel to an SG but has a tremolo system? I really wanna help my friend find an amazing guitar!!

    • @wessoncolt1844
      @wessoncolt1844 4 года назад

      Corey Cann No his range is unfortunately 500-600. The sad thing is I suggested reverb but like when I first started he is nervous and is afraid he will be scammed etc

    • @alexrishi2740
      @alexrishi2740 4 года назад +2

      Try Greco, or Ibanez for some lawsuit era sgs. As for the tremolo what type does he want? A bigsby can easily be put on and would be easier to just buy. If it’s a maestro tremolo you can buy one on eBay or reverb and put it on. Maestro tremolos are a bit pricey though. Around 200-250

      Alex Rishi He likes a bigsby as he tried a Gretch. As a proud Greco owner, I’m looking into this as I own an 1976 EG-900 with upgrades. However, it’s hard finding one in good condition. I showed him with with patina and he saw the condition of the headstock and was spooked. Like I said, he is scared of reverb and we are not fans of PayPal

    • @alexrishi2740
      @alexrishi2740 4 года назад +1

      Wesson Colt I also love Greco as I have a great 85 59-50 les Paul. If he’s spooked about patina and reverb maybe he could check out one of the used cheaper end Gibson sgs from guitar center with the batwing pick guard, dot inlays and no pickup covers. Usually in a walnut finish. I seem them for around 400-500 in good condition. Again the bisgby is tough to buy stock. Best bet is to buy separate and put it one or get a guitar tech to do it.

    My favorite reverb ads are always the $300 squire that have $100 pick ups... asking price-$450. Like the new price plus the upgrade equals the used price. A $300 squire used is a $175 guitar. Regardless on how much you spent on the pickups. When I am buying a used guitar you did not "upgrade" anything. You changed things.
