He is an amazing content creator!.. Chris Roberts should be paying him because i have known of SC for a long time but had absolutely no interest until stumbling across this channel lol.. I spent the entire evening yesterday (my first day of holiday vacation) watching his videos. Lol
Morpholigist is better for ship designs and details, but lawofthewest is best for deciding what ship to buy and learning lore. The visuals are top notch as well.
An interesting way that could dock with the Mechantman would be externally, with a Tevarin airshield on the Merchantman so the crew could still breathe while entering the mother ship.
Maybe they could have the Defender plug into the BMM. With it's landing gear up and arms extended, the Defender looks like an older US style electrical plug. They could have two slots on the BMM that the arms could go into and allow for a lock/unlock of the Defender for docking, along with a central (airlock/Tevarin airshield) to enter/exit the BMM by.
I am seriously loving my defender. The most optimal way of fighting I found is to stay at 2.5-3k range, strafing laterally and sniping with the hitscan guns, not allowing opponents to rush me down. If they persist, go full speed, decouple and shoot backwards. Sabers and hornets have no business chasing after me, and lighter fighters melt in 3 shots. But on top of it's excellent fighting ability, it has near-vanguard range and facilities. Absolutely brilliant. Also, those shields are not really worth it for combat without a copilot. I'd swap them for smaller recharge delay shields when solo.
Great and honest assessment about this cool new ship. Remarkable that CIG is able to make a ship that feels so original. It has it's quarks but damn it's awesome. Thanks LotW!
Glad I stayed to the end. Greycat Buggy is just barely to large. It is very cool that you can get a Nox in there. I'll have to try that. That opens up even more possibilities for this ship.
Great review! I do wonder how many takes and how many edits you make to get such smooth narration, with no tongue ties, no "umm", and no errors. I feel like I'm listening to an audio book, and almost expected to hear some plot twists or foley effects. So what's the secret?
I love the Banu lore, style and tech.As an artist myself I've been naturally attracted to their artistically designed ships. the only thing I'm not entirely on board with is making it's unique tech available to everyone in the future. Like, installing a Banu style shield on a Valkyrie... i like when each race have their own advantages and disadvantages.
I guess the Quantum Effect will be hull locket, while logicly it should be locked to the engine type. Would be cool though to have different types of engines with different types of effects and have them interchangable so you can customize it to your liking.
Hey LotW, The greycat does fit, you just need someone to close the baydoor, when you are at it's highest point :). get the Greycat out again can be done by one person. Loved the review, love my defender!
Hi LAWoftheWEST, nice video about the Defender and its fight capabilities and tactics. You also the first one mentioning using fixed weapons instead of gimbles when flying solo. Would be nice if you could make a short video about using fixed size 3 weapons in Arena Commander compared to size 2 gimbled.
A sweet fighter can see some great potential in it if 1 could break the rules or not I like it either way very different on looks. Thanks for the video .
i feel like this ship should be a strafing run ship, it adds some diversity in the light fighter line up of brawler/dogfighter ships. but thats just my take on what it could be. and also my favorite tactic to use in duels, go fast, hit hard.
Law, I wanted to say that I think I have been able to get hits at around 4k but normally when a target ship is stationary. of course at this range it is all luck to hit them. but that does seem to make the max range a little longer. I do agree that under 3k is optimal to start laying into someone when your closing in on them.
Anyone else feel like it looks like a flying turret? I kind of feel like if it docked to the merchantman, it's arms would draw back and then rotate out and start firing while repairs were made, it was rearmed, refueled, and gained the protection of the merchantman shielding
I am way excited toi see the merchantman as I also have that ship :-) In my opinion the cannons on the defender are very strong. It kills an Aurora in like 2 salvos. Maybe 5 toi kill a cutlass assuming all cannons land the shot. I think the damage level is good, maybe need to make them over heat a little faster to balance them out. I think the shields are a good level of strength but the ship becomes unflyable once you've had both limbs broken off. That is the biggest issue I have with it. Once the limbs break you can't stop yourself from spinning out of control. If only one is broken off its almost flyable but it is pretty terrible. I understand the need for them to break off but definitely needs to be much tougher to get to break off. As far as flight performance ive been using the warden a lot lately so the defender feels great as far as maneuverability. It's definitely better than the vanguard but not as good say the arrow not at all.
Don't think of the defender as a sniper rifle or an SMG. Think about it as a DMR (dedicated marksman rifle, think of the m14 or Halo DMR). Medium range accurately puts shots into a target. No one shot kills, no brawling at knife-fight range, find that sweet middle ground mop the floor with pirates. I can't believe how well they nailed the feel of that weird type of engagement. This also makes the ship really vulnerable to light fighters. The handling is supposed to make it feel like a turret or DMR that is easy to aim accurately but not a dogfighter.
I imagine if they make it a dogfighter that has good range, they could have the lasers cycle through one at a time instead of firing all at once. That would be awesome. If they're going the sniper route, which would be my guess, they should add some capability to zoom in.
Sounds like this ship is very much like German fighters in WWII, Zoom and Boom tactics. Approach an enemy at long range and high speed, then rush them at full speed past them, flip and continue firing until out of range.
Anyone watch Macross (Robotech)?.. Th exterior design sort of reminds me of an Invid ship of some kind lol... The Interior looks like something i'd expect a Xenomorphs to be lurking in.. Picking my crew off one by one, waiting to jump out and eat me lol
I have the defender and it is pretty awesome but the limbs break off way too easily. It hits pretty hard though. It's shields are not too squishy but those limbs are just so easy toi snap off
Light Fighter with Heavy Fighter power output. No lie, I was in my 600i, power to shields. I lifted off from PO and got hit 5 times. By the time I looked at my shields, I had all shields down except the rear. The defender needs to be tonned down in weapons to maybe Gladius levels, right now? its got rail gun output. a Large ship should not blow up in about 6 hits from full power.
It's WAY worse looking than the concept photos. The concepts used ingraved black metal, and a bronze-looking metal. I think the bronze-looking metal was MUCH better looking than that bone texture they used. I mean, I get they're going for that crab look, but putting actual bone on the inside is a bit much. XD
Lots of ship reviewers out there. Law of West is my favorite. Very informative and complete. Joy to listen to. Please keep up the great work
AGREED!!

Thank you very much for this real analysis. I'm so tired of all those cheap "first look" videos without real details and in-depth informations.
The only person I come to for ship Reviews! Keep up the great work!
absolutely love the Banu Defender, thanks for going over for us LAW, you rock!!!

I could build that shield today without 29th century tech lol.
Someone didn't cover his bases at RSI.
@@EvitoCruor Found the kid that tries to impress people by saying he can build anything.
The work you've placed into this is 'wow'. Thoroughly enjoyed.
oh my god. MY favorite SC content creator! you make it like a documentary, and the way you record and portray the image of the thing in question.
OK Law, you win. I am back on the Banu Hype-train. Toot Toot!!

well done , i look forward to flying mine . and still await the release of the merchantman . thankyou for another great review
A new place to come for ship reviews and i just bought one to go along with my merchantman.

One of my favorite ships so far.

Notification squad! Also I love this ship allot. Perfect for multi-role co-op, fighter aside.

who else is here after buying a merchantman in the alien week sale?
Actually came to see if I should CCU my Hull C to the BMM. Half way through the video, I did.
Sc,needs more alien like ships, city's. Etc.

The interior gives me Farscape vibes. The exterior reminds me of the updated Battlestar Galactica Cylon Raider. It's like Moya and Scar had a baby.
Quality videos like always !
Hey man just recently found your channel, really enjoying your content keep it up
A sweet fighter can see some great potential in it if 1 could break the rules or not I like it either way very different on looks. Thanks for the video .
With the new QT limitations this ship is amazing.
I'll be looking forward to seeing a Banu mid size exploration ship. Not a fan of the crab look though.

Looks like a giant crab to me
I think a slower speed along with its range and maneuverability makes sense for this ship. It's supposed to stay close and protect the BMM after all.

not sure i'd use it. but its components might come in handy.
Good information, this could be, if they don't nerf it, a perfect escort for not just the Merchant man, but the Hulls A-E also! : )
Law of the West sounds a lot like a guy that does ship reviews in ED called The Pilot. Probably the same guy. Good reviews.

so the Defender is basically the boom and zoom master of star citizen
Nice ship review once again! Ever thought about doing a video on the Polaris?
Any chance of doing a review of the reclaimer?
Sounds like this ship is very much like German fighters in WWII, Zoom and Boom tactics. Approach an enemy at long range and high speed, then rush them at full speed past them, flip and continue firing until out of range.
reminds me of IG-88's ship.
the design reminds me of the Vasudan ships from Freespace.
How do you repair the ship without landing at pad?
Treat the ramp like an elevator, raise it with the greycat on the ramp
May i add, that the superhornet is not an brawler neither?
Anyone watch Macross (Robotech)?.. Th exterior design sort of reminds me of an Invid ship of some kind lol... The Interior looks like something i'd expect a Xenomorphs to be lurking in.. Picking my crew off one by one, waiting to jump out and eat me lol
Watched a player ram that ship into a landing pad over and over
Optimal strategy
I wonder how hard it will be to get one of these in the verse
probably riduculously hard. Just use ur wallet much easier heh
VERY, First you have to find it. Then have enough reputation with the Banu so they let you have one. that's why I sit on my BMM.
I have the defender and it is pretty awesome but the limbs break off way too easily. It hits pretty hard though. It's shields are not too squishy but those limbs are just so easy toi snap off
Hard is an understatement, as a Banu owner I can even admit, it needs a big nerf
What’s the name of the red ship?
It makes me a little sad that I've zero way of getting this or the vanduu blade, atleast zero way I could find
What is this ship released now ?
strange they defined this as a "defender" for the merchantman, but armed it as a sniper which would be more suited for a stealth ship.
I enjoy my bucky 'o hare toad ship.
*has better components than sabre*
"Alien Light Fighter"
Sabre is a first strike stealth fighter, you can scrap those components for others and give up stealth but why would you?
@@rooster1012 yeah sabre was never a brawler but people got the idea that it was this undedable killing machine because it was broken for so long.
@@lordsheogorath3377 remember when it had 3 coolers and 4 powerplants?
@@Neptunesplayground0 and with 4 omniskys that was some good shit
I would love to see the defender and sabre go head to head in a dog fight.
and u can fit a couple boxes in it =)
feel odd that the gun seems to be slanting to one side.
The arms moving seem unnecessary. It looks cool but has no actual function that could be done simpler with less moving parts
I wish I could pull the arms back in combat
If the arms would move forward but at a slightly lower angle it wouldn't obstruct view as much.
Long range escort two cockpits two beds two big guns... no toilet
Sounds like a futurist zero
