My personal list: 1.)Live Service 2.)loot boxes 3.)micro transactions 4.)Single player games that require a constant internet connection. 5.) Killing games and not providing an offline mode.
Microtransactions will never ever fade away. Just look at pop-ups, they still exist. As long as it makes some kind of money, it will be there. There will always be whales to buy it.
Micro transactions were fine when they were MICRO £5 for a bundle or £1 for a skin now it's £15-£29 for a skin/bundle like wtf and on a paid game *COD*
Hotter take, anything from 360 era on doesn't need to be remade. Its not like we were still dealing with tank controls as the norm by mid-late 360 era. They controlled almost exactly like now all it would be is graphics.
remakes are still fine but it's the remasters that I have a problem with, I recently played the Alan Wake remastered and for some reason, it felt more janky than the original and honestly I didn't see much of graphical enhancement either, the original still looks fine. the remastered is just badly optimized slop like someone tried to convert a red velvet cake into a chocolate cake by slopping chocolate frosting on it and now it's worst of both worlds.
Developers aren't taking risks because they're making games for streamers who are playing games for advertisers who are sponsoring games for shareholders who need everything dumbed down to the lowest inoffensive common denominator, and nobody is making games for gamers anymore. Okay, there's a bit of hyperbole there, but this baffling trend of paying to watch other people play games is insidiously ruining the industry for those of us who just want to play games. The love of monetization is the root of all kinds of evil.

Got Rainbow 6 siege to play with a friend towards the end of the year. Took me a solid hour before I finished setting up account, logging in, and playing through the required tutorial. Wow was my motivation to play the game killed by that point.
Decent list, but two points that I would have included are having massive file sizes for games that aren't visually stunning (Dead Space remake is 60 GB, Black Ops 6 is 254 GB) and releasing games in an unfinished state. That's not to say eliminate every possible bug or issue, but for every Cyberpunk redemption story, there are too many failures. As a consumer, I want a quality product and not a rushed-out-the-door cash grab.
Today as default I'm a player who waits, at least, for the first patch release before buy the game. Unless is a game that I Hyped to play (usually nostalgia remakes like as Crash N Sane, CTR and Tomb Raider 123 remastered). Online patches made developers spoiled with: whe launch now and fix later.
The fact that cod has been filling up entire hard drives for like half a decade is so crappy. Even when folks don't have the full game just the f2p micro transaction farm.
Worst thing is when they cancel a game that would be hype like that Spider-Man game were you can play multiple spider men and they do that for absolutely no reason
I’m sure they had their reasons. I think instead of making a full blow out multiplayer game, they should dip their toes by making a more concise multiplayer experience alongside their single player game. Like imagine picking one of two spidermen, swinging around and doing a couple missions and some combat. Making a full blown game sounds out of their area of expertise and could come across as a downgrade and cash grav
For me what has to stop is: 1. half-assed releases, its ridiculous that games being finished 2 years after release has become the standard and people actually cheer this behavior. 2. Paywall content: battlepass and micro-transactions. 3. AI anything. 4. extra launchers 5. PC exclusives ( looking at you EGS). 6. Consumerism - consumers gotta chill stop asking for early releases and a new game year after year let things cook so they are actually good and innovative. 7. live service has to go, or at least not become a thing. 8. Ubisoft.. just stop making games at this point please, they are soulless and uninspired like a slot machines.
While I don't support number one, games should release in a playable fashion, I understand the cheering. It's that they finally fixed the damn game and got into the shape it should have been before taking people's money that is being cheered. It's that they bothered to fix it at all. So many games come out in crap shape, and the devs just move on.

3rd point i disagree with. You know with all the AI advances if there is one thing that i wanted to see is AI, as in NPCs, enemies etc being at higher level than they were two decades ago in FEAR, HL2 or Far Cry 1. So that one thing youd expect is nowhere to be seen. Probably because you need the rest of the game to work well and that is heavily lacking. So far AI is being used to ditch workers. You would think with so much time and workforce saved the games would be... cheaper to make. And they are. Where is the price drop i wonder.
If Xbox and PlayStation get to have exclusives, PC gets to have exclusives too. Either ditch exclusives as a whole or start making the exclusives worth it. EDIT: Just realized you might of meant exclusive to a specific store front. That's on me.
A.I. is going to be a larger problem than most people know. There''s no place in gaming for that slop since there's perfectly good voice actors and script writers out there looking for gigs. take away the human element and it becomes a depressing brick of artificial misery.
Who is there to hire when everyone goes crybaby mode because they want another ten thousand dollars on top of their ten thousand dollars? It's the VA's faults. They acted extremely stupid throughout 2021-2023, especially with pushing that only people who share race with a character should voice that character.
This is an unfortunate reality with venture capitalism. The would rather have 3 major wins in a year than a dozen mid-level successes. Even though the industry was essentially built on sub 20 development teams. Probably
AI replacing artists and other talent. That stuff in BO6 makes me sick. I did a review on BO1 and it really just brings into perspective the lack of creativity in the more modern entries. That’s not to say there’s 0 creativity, but Execs are undercutting artists with that garbage.

Netflix is a big indicator of how the majority of consumers just want to consume. Good or bad they just want the content which is sad. I could understand if you couldn't tell the difference because then it would be proper deception but it's the fact that AI art is noticeable and yet people still accept the lower quality.
It's not Activision fault it's delusional employees think they ARE a character developed BY Activision. Voice actors need to S T F U and understand that the character is NOT theirs, the voice they choose to use is NOT theirs, it's the characters.
Here are the trends that I wish they died already; - Live-service - Ubisoft - EA - 1 to 1 game remakes for the ones that are already accessible and not outdated for modern audience (Sony in general) - AI-generated games - Unnecessary big budgets - Oversatured open world - Too much focus on fidelity rather than using art styles

2024 was also the year of QA professionals being fired en masse. I know a lot of people still looking for work. Also, I now need a game with Falcon as a voice actor.
I can understand wanting to remake/remaster a game that's old, like for instance the Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario remakes from last year. Both are remakes of much older games, one of which used to cost an arm and a leg if you wanted to buy it for the Gamecube. The remakes that shouldn't exist are those of games that aren't buy maybe 5 or 6 years old and haven't shown their age. Games like The Last of Us Part 2 Remaster and the Horizon remaster were completely unneeded. Give us more remakes like the two listed above, as well as Silent Hill 2 and RE2 and 4, and less of what Sony's been doing.
To be fair the horizon one does look way better and it was only 10 bucks for it if you already had the other version. So that's not that bad. They could have charged 40 bucks for it but they didn't
I am a voice actor who has done many small games, but all the big studios seemingly just want AI, so now I am building my own team of fellow steadfast voice actors because of the debacle.
@@holdupits420 thank you! The struggle is real, appreciate the kind words. 🙏 AI won't compare with actual originality, just make somewhat convicing copies. Artists of all kinds don't just understand this, we believe it to the core of our being. This is why I am not only gathering genuine voices, but also writers, illustrators, designers of all kinds. And, seeing as now I am simply hiring myself, then I actually agree with you - AI can keep doing nothing for nothing while human ingenuity rises to the challenge to go further. ✌️
@holdupits420 yeah and if it keeps going like it is then it'll stay being terrible. You CANNOT replace real people with AI and get the feeling voice actors put into their work. If you think they can you're delusional and that's being nice about it
Blame the black sheeps on your industry that threatened to hold strikes on their employers, or change the lines of anime dubs without permission. These people have brought a plight to your jobs, and why studios are looking into AI instead.
i think the worst part about the account requirement issue is when they slap it on a SINGLEPLAYER GAME (lookin at you sony), i kind of get it for multiplayer, especially if you're going to allow crossplatform play, but for single player games, theres no point. at all. Also Falcon begging video game devs to feature his voice in a game is hilarious, would genuinely love to see that in any game, hope you get there someday Falcon!
Cross saves are a minor bonus, but a lot of games on Steam that have that requirement don't offer Cross saving. In the case of Forza Horizon 4, technical issues (as stated in the FAQ) are the reason why your save data from the Microsoft Store and Xbox versions can not carry over to Steam. Only your Backstage Passes are shared between all 3 versions.
@spiderwraith0 Cross Saves could work for Single Player games, too, but there's always one reason or another that Cross Saving doesn't happen. Heck, even Gran Turismo 7 has cross saves between PS4 and PS5 since an SEN account is required to play.
Example - Concord Don’t release a trailer that just shows a high def cheeseburger wiggling around on a spaceship if that has nothing to do with your game
Nah Concord clearly failed because of wokeness with the pronouns and purposely making the characters fugly. Everyone knows two/three letter words are the real enemy and ugly characters make total sense to do. If you couldn't tell, this is a joke. But people DO think this.
In order to get my ps5 controller working for some PC games, They have to be run through steam, So when you're playing an EA game, or rockstar/ubisoft etc, that you bought on Xbox gamespass, Thats now a complex circuit of 3 different launchers to get your game/controller working. Its enough to make me chuck my pc in the bin.
Worst trend they ever made was....pre-orders without beta testers. Releasing games still in beta but rebranding it as "pre-ordered". Games that require better hardware because they don't want to spend the time optimizing the software to run on older systems. They drop tons of money into development and then don't stick around to finish and get all the sales off hype. I actually stopped buying new releases until at least 6 months to a year after they come out.
The worst part about corporations buying studios is that they think they're just acquiring a brand and that's what will make the money, not the people who actually created the stuff. This isn't Apple, I don't give a shit about the brand, I care about the artists making the art.
I'm 50 and I hated mobile phones when they begun to take off in the late 90's. Hated how it tethered you to work, even after hours, made you 'always on'. Previously if you were away from a phone and not at work, you were uncontactable, and I liked the freedom and delineation of that. I refused to get one for years. But of course I have a phone now. Everyone does. My point is, see how you feel about AI in 20 years, when it's ubiquitous and just part of the default societal experience.
Number 6: When you play the Mas Effect trilogy it launches the EA app thing first, then from there it launches the game launcher, then the game runs which is actually just another launcher for the three games inside it. There had to be a smoother way to do it but here we are with a launcher for our launchers launcher. Launcher-ception. 😂
Should have been an extra point thats more specific to PC gaming, and that is for devs to stop half assing optimization. The amount of terrible ports and straight up unoptimized garbage pc games that released in 2024 by all metrics should be downright illegal. The issue is a combination of out of touch dev teams that think everyone can afford to spend thousands on top end hardware to brute force past thier terrible code, or the mismangement of tech such as upscaling and frame generation. I think its baffling how so many companies want to make a profit but then release a game where an overwhelming majority of pc gamers cannot feasibly run the game at an acceptable level, because despite what the internet will say, the vast majority of pc gamers are on very modest hardware, not halo products such as 4090s.
I'm on a 4090 and Jedi Survivor still ran like crap when I played it. I honestly don't know how anyone not as deranged as I am about PC hardware even managed to get it running.
To play devil's advocate as a game programmer, when code bases get large enough, it basically becomes unfeasible to refactor it in a clean way. The game I work on isn't large by any means, but even still, I've seen some pretty cursed code in it. But as for optimization, a large part of that is the design and the art. There's a bunch of crazy and neat tricks that programmers use to make sure that the assets work with the game, but if the designer wants a million polygon mesh in the game, there's only so much programmers can do to make it work
As a relatively new gamer (got into gaming in 2015 after graduating college lol), I actually really appreciate the remakes of old popular games! Because I didn’t grow up playing games on old consoles, I’m spoiled by the new tech & the only games I want to play are the ones that are latest and greatest in graphics
I think it's worth expanding your understanding of AI voice actors to AI images as well, as they're just as bad as the AI voices and they also steal from the artists you're supposed to care about. Prompting is not a skill, it's just describing to someone else what they should be doing. Illustrators, modelers, etc also deserve to have their property not stolen from them and then used to compete against them.
This is truly annoying in today's gaming. Not being able to put the game down is the ultimate disrespect of my time. The way saving has been implemented in the past decade is criminal
First trend that comes to my mind that immediately need to die is having early access locked by a pre-order or 3-7 days early access that is only accessible by buying the most expensive edition. STOP IT!!!!
I worked in video games as a concept artist for 10+ years, and I agree and enjoy hearing everything you commented about bad practices inside the industry.
4:17 Just straight up wrong. It’s was $40 to buy it new or $10 to update it to PS5. Got a whole new game mode and a ton of features in a $10 update. Now the Last of Us *Part 1* remake was absolutely egregious. The part 2 update remaster was not.
This is unfortunately a double edge sword. Without hype games can get cancelled due to lack of public interest but it also puts unnecessary pressure on an upcoming game. Plus the public essentially became free beta testers so you can't always hide the game away until release date. I'm not sure how to solve this problem
@@TurinAlexander I will say that pre-ordering games is a bad habit and ideally a practice I wish people would stop doing but that is wishful thinking. Early access is a fools errand. It's essentially players paying to test unfinished games. But hype should be only for games with actual release dates and any significant delay causes all hype to be permanently dissolved until the day the game officially releases.
Dont care for battlepasses. Dont care about skins. Dont care about lootboxes. Dont care about DLC's. I just want a complete game that already has everything I paid for. People with disposalable incomes will always buy this trash to support it. So it will not change.
I get what you're saying @ point #5, but Dark Souls is not a AAA game. From Software was definitely a AA studio when it was made, they were not a household name and that game did not have a AAA budget. Games like Elden Ring and later games were made with a much larger budget and could be considered AAA. I get what you're saying though, the range is From Software (current) and Naughty Dog (current) which makes sense.
I'd be happy with "remasters" of games from the NES/SNES and N64/PS1 eras. All that would need to be done is to update the graphics to look like something released today and i'd buy it again. But yeah, but it makes the game worse, its an absolute fail. And when its just a re-release with no graphical updates, it just gives you access to it on a modern console, i'll pass. But the main trend that needs to die is the onslaught of "passes" in games. I am so tired of season passes and battle passes in games. I'm buying a game to play, not a subscription service to additional content that is locked behind a paywall.
It`s worth noticing that The Finals footage was from the beta and it doesn`t sound like that in the real game, it`s so much better now and with human sounds too lol
they also use it for semi-dynamic commentary that wouldn’t be even possible from real voice actors. There’s rarely a case where this works in the industry, but here this is the exception rather than the rule- even if it doesn’t seem that way since The Finals is the first real notable game to use AI. It’s literally a multiplayer game with real-time commentary. If there was going to be a scenario where AI voices were okay, it would be this one and this one alone.

Bethesda pushing their so called "next-gen" update on PC users was utter bullshit. We had 4k mods for their game literally the same year it released. We had better "HD" graphics than their HD update gave us, and they took up a fraction of the storage space. You want to give people some kind of "next-gen" option, fine, do that. But I think I can speak for literally all PC gamers; we don't need or want any of your shit "upgrades" for your games, modders have it covered.
Using dark souls as the benchmark for why aaa runs together like carbon copies is more apt than every other point. It's iterative of every game before it, but receives all the praise being groundbreaking.

Falcon talking about voice acting like he isn't voice acting felt rather confusing. To be clear: even providing voice over narration is a form of voice acting.
Wish they would stop putting all that DEI garbage in our games, that is a trend I think is absolutely coming to an end. Most gamers won't buy anything with it in games anymore. I know I won't. If they/them don't stop, they will go broke.😅

The only game with a battle pass I liked is Deep Rock Galactic. It's where any new seasonal content is added for free, no hidden costs, just play and earn the experience to unlock the content. The best part is that it is permanent, no time limit whatsoever. Helldivers 2 did a similar thing with their battle passes being permanent, but they did make a mistake with the Killzone items being limited time.

I'm a little surprised the complaints about microtransactions didn't mention one of the biggest "microtransaction" of the year. The $90 mount in World of Warcraft. The mount is a non-flying mount when everyone can fly at lvl10. It has an auctioneer and some other vendor which is the same as in-game cities and some towns. At most, it saves you a couple minutes of travel time. Essentially, you are buying a $90 status symbol. It sold very well, of course, so there will only be more like it.
I wouldn't mind Sony doing remakes of their less heralded games, like those Champions of Norrath games or Primal or Rise of Honor. Even The Getaway games had their fans...
We Gotta boycott micro transactions in any paid games. I won’t buy any game with micro transactions until it’s price drops and all the micro transaction stuff comes with it (though, I guess that’s a PC privilege). And some companies I have price limits based on company behavior (EA? $5 whole game max, and only with all micro transaction items included). It’s hard. Some games I want to play, but I won’t give the company money on principle. If nobody else does it though, then nothing will change.
With Number 3 I have to stay if its done RIGHT, then I'll have incentive to get said "Micro" transactions. But within reason. No, a freakin shirt skin for my character (that I have to play in 1st person, mind you) is worth anymore than a couple bucks, ever. BUT, there are some games that do it right. For example, Season Passes that basically give you the same value spent with in-game currency rewards, plus all the goodies along the way. Sure I spent $5 - 15 bucks, but I got that back with in-game currency to then spend when and where I like, plus all that passes other goodies. Or, take Halo Infinite - Its basically free, but if you miss out on a pass, you can always purchase it later and enable that season track and play it as you wish. There's incentive to play it, when its happening tho if you rather not spend the $$$.
They are skewing the concepts of a remake vs a remaster. Seems to not like remasters not REMAKES. Horizon and last of us 2 are remasters. Res4, silent hill, ff7 remakes.
In modern corporate america, the difference between their astronomical sales "expectations" and the reality of their sales can be listed as loses and comped by the govt as tax breaks b/c they promised that amt to their investors. this lets them make profits from a game, keep them (not pass them on to their investors) and still pay off the investors by skipping out on paying taxes, and they might even qualify for a subsidy or bailout to boot to pay those investors. (yeah, bailouts are still happening, btw, and they're part of the corporate financial structure now). it's the new industry standard for all of industry. this model also allows them to make profits from companies that never make anything, those fake companies from pt. 1 raked in billions in investor's capital, then just shuffled it around. it's disgraceful. EDIT: note that this is the new standard, it's not going away unless legislators step in, and the GOP and their "Glorious Leader" have already announced that they're going to make it all worse.
Regarding remakes, my favorite games these past years have mostly been remakes (Dead Space Remake, RE2R and RE4R, P3Reload, Silent Hill 2 Remake, the FF7R games etc). Remakes of older games are important and amazing, its unnecessary remakes like the TLoU remakes that shouldn't exist.
8:30 Hey Falcon. Would you be interested in being a voice actor for one of The InBetween's upcoming trailers? Or have you record a line similar to your Gameranx intro that'll be an easter egg in the game?😅
I just realized something. Bare with me here. Closing a development team after one project not preforming how the publisher wanted it to is kind of like firing a head coach after their first year not going how the owner wanted it to. Some people need time to build something worth while, and a lot of times it takes more than the first attempt to do so. First impressions aren’t always everything.

Good points on all 10 plus the bonus, but regarding number 9; nostalgia can garner excitement and actual joy for a good remake/reboot depending on how long we have waited. Dragon Quest 3 hd 2d is a fine example as I have put 40 hours in since I purchased it recently and it harnesses the love and art of its original creators mixed with the quality of life stuff that we didn’t have back in the nineties. Perhaps other large companies like Square Enix could learn a thing or two before belting out a 60 or 70 dollar title that nobody asked for and pay attention to us gamers that have literally spent thousands in the last thirty years on stuff we like
@27:00 - the new Instagram avatars are also like this. My partner (who loves using the Avatar to react) wondered why the update made them weird; I explained her the weird state of art when companies make it both cartoon but realistic rather than one or the other
I’m a gamer, but I work full time so the time I actually get to play is precious to me. The fact that I’m finding it harder and harder to find any NEW games worthy of spending that time on is a troubling sign indeed. I’ve spent the last 4 months jumping around all the Valve Classics which are miles better than any of the monetized dreck flooding the market today. Omg, how friggin amazing was Left4Dead?!?! Basically, Devs and Corpos need to remember to make games for gamers, not streamers.
23:20 "You've gotta do one game as a proof of concept, and if it does decently, the *second* game is where the money goes in." A prime example: Solasta. The first game wasn't visually impressive and didn't have great voice acting, but it managed to take the current D&D rules, iron out flaws, and show it can be fun to play. They recently announced a sequel, and it's REALLY obvious they're giving it a much larger budget.
Remakes aren't a problem in & of themselves... but remaking games that are LESS THAN 5 YEARS OLD (looking at you Sony) is absolutely ridiculous, especially when there's 10+ year old games that could actually use remaking (cough Fallout 3 & NV cough)

Hot take: Anything under ten years shouldn’t be remade.

Hotter take, anything from 360 era on doesn't need to be remade.
Its not like we were still dealing with tank controls as the norm by mid-late 360 era. They controlled almost exactly like now all it would be is graphics.
That means the Witcher 3 could be remade
I'd say anything under 15 years shouldn't be remade
remakes are still fine but it's the remasters that I have a problem with, I recently played the Alan Wake remastered and for some reason, it felt more janky than the original and honestly I didn't see much of graphical enhancement either, the original still looks fine. the remastered is just badly optimized slop like someone tried to convert a red velvet cake into a chocolate cake by slopping chocolate frosting on it and now it's worst of both worlds.

Previously if you were away from a phone and not at work, you were uncontactable, and I liked the freedom and delineation of that. I refused to get one for years. But of course I have a phone now.

Very fun video Falcon. I had a good laugh, especially the hypnotise remix you came up with 😂
I'd be happy with "remasters" of games from the NES/SNES and N64/PS1 eras.

Number 0 - annoying activists ruining game studios and attacking customers
nope
You colossally failed to address the critical issue affecting games today

Yup...

6:39 NO ONE holds their flashlight like this. NO ONE. It's absolutely RE TAR DED to do this. It is literally the worst possible way to hold a flashlight.
Plenty of people hold flashlights like that???
@@UsoRich685 Nope. If you do that, you are controlling it with your shoulder and biceps with no fine control. It's completely unnatural and fighting basic anatomy. They throw this in movies, and if you have any military friends, they will be laughing their asses off
@ ??? Do you have hand eye coordination problems? You can easily control that with your wrist. The buttons on flashlights used to commonly be on the bottom so holding it like that give you an easier way to turn it on or off with your thumb. And wtf does the military have to do with it? No one cares what a bunch of dudes in the military think 😂😂
Hey Falcon, former AAA dev here, doing a solo game right after leaving the industry, please lend me your voice! I have the PERFECT role for you. Perfect role.
11:48 - No, it does not make games look worse.
Sony Pony. 😢
Rock and Stone!
Preach falcon!! I would love to have your voice in a videogame. You got my vote sir! 👏👏
Currently replaying The Witcher 3, since it was on sale on Steam and I do love achievements... SO annoyed to discover that I have to launch the game in Steam, which then launches the CDPR launcher, which *then* lets me launch the game if I want the damn achievements to actually register. I *HATE* all these extra launchers!!!
Stop making everything digital only
If they want to have a bigger success they need to eventually make copies of games that have all the dlc already included
I can’t remember the last time a resident evil game came out that has the dlc on disc thanks to that I still haven’t played the dlc for the last 4 or so games
Console games that when loaded say "Press any key to continue", and pressing any key takes you to the menu to load your save game, or change settings etc. Just load straight to the menu.
Also, do you know how long it took for me to find a keyboard that has an "any" key?
I’d love a Resistance remake so much.
noticing a lot of qualifiers for these trends that suck 😅 love you guys❗️ ❤️ 🎉
We Gotta boycott micro transactions in any paid games. I won’t buy any game with micro transactions until it’s price drops and all the micro transaction stuff comes with it (though, I guess that’s a PC privilege). And some companies I have price limits based on company behavior (EA? $5 whole game max, and only with all micro transaction items included). It’s hard. Some games I want to play, but I won’t give the company money on principle. If nobody else does it though, then nothing will change.
The HL3 announcement at the end 💀 me! Keep up the great work, Falcon! Btw, I would 100% support ANY GAME that hired you or Jake as voice actors!
Remakes from 6th gen or below are okay, some 7th
The piggy song and the AI voice acting made this peak entertainment. LONG LIVE THE FALCON!
8:30 Hey Falcon. Would you be interested in being a voice actor for one of The InBetween's upcoming trailers? Or have you record a line similar to your Gameranx intro that'll be an easter egg in the game?😅
You did a voice in Day of the Tentacle. Don't lie :)
EA's 'remember me' function on logging in is cancelled any time an update occurs. I don't play through EA often. When I do I always have to update.
