A Volusia sheriff’s deputy looking for a 13-year-old Oak Hill girl who went missing after school went searching from motel to motel until he found her in a dark motel room with a 22-year-old Orlando man she met online.
When Deputy Royce James entered the doorway of the room at the All Suite Motel at 335 N. Ridgewood Ave. in Edgewater, the girl ran into his arms and gave him a hug.
The suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Thompson (DOB 2/25/1998), was taken into custody on a charge of interference with child custody, with the Edgewater Police Department adding a charge of traveling to meet after using a computer to lure a child. Additional charges are pending.
Deputies responded to the missing child report around 6:15 p.m. Thursday, after the girl’s grandmother said she never came home, and never went to her basketball game after school, either. Deputy James started investigating, and spoke to a friend of the missing girl, who said the victim was planning on going to a motel with someone she met online. The friend said she thought the man’s name started with a T, possibly Tyler, and that he was from Orlando. She said he may have picked up the victim at the Dollar General store in Oak Hill.
Deputy James went to the Dollar General to look for security video, and found surveillance images of the victim at the store. An employee reported the girl said she was waiting for someone to pick her up.
Next, Deputy James started visiting area motels, showing the front desk clerks a photo of the missing girl and searching the day’s check-ins for a match. At the third motel he checked, Deputy James noticed a guest checked in under the name Tyler Thompson, with an address out of Orlando. Deputies went to his room and knocked on the door several times before Thompson finally answered, and the victim came running.
When she was told she’d be taken somewhere to be medically cleared and interviewed, the girl asked Deputy James to stay with her. He took her to a local Department of Children and Families facility for evaluation, and then took her home.
The motel is located in the city limits of Edgewater, and the Edgewater Police Department is working with the State Attorney’s Office on potential additional charges in this case. Thompson was released from the Volusia County Branch Jail on Friday night after posting $15,000 bail on his current charges.

what they should have done was arrest both ....the girl had to agree to meet the dude and alot of girls are doing this and trying to cry as if their the victim when their not.....she chose to go see him and should also be arrested for it to teach her to never do it again....but then again she'll no doubt do it again because she got away with it

I am sure she immediately regretted her choice when she realized she was in danger and then again as he was raping her repeatedly throughout the night. To criminalize her, the victim, is unconscionable. He got forty years, lifetime parole thereafter and had to be a RSO for the rest of his life. How much time do you think this child should get, and what would it accomplish. Do better.

Hopefully your daughter isn't dumb enough to meet strangers online for sex. It may not have been as fun as she thought and who knows if he was going to just let her go in the morning but she 100% got herself into that situation knowingly. Only reason the cops could find her that night is because she told a friend she was meeting a guy from the internet at Dollar General to go to a hotel that night..

Great job to the Deputy, but also thank you to the employees at the Dollar General and Motel who actually cared enough to help and get accurate information for the police. Things came together because people cared enough to help all around.
I read a news article that said he was released from the Volusia County Branch Jail late Friday after posting $15,000 bond. Why in the heck would a judge let him post bond? That has to be incredibly frustrating to the police officers and family of the victim.
I keep saying it over and over - the problem with the American Justice System is that it, once it hits the bureaucracy level (the courts), the only thing that matters is proper procedure and making sure all forms and paperwork are properly filed. Things like "justice" and "community safety" are completely irrelevant.
This country would be drastically different if the courts could actually differentiate between good people who messed up a little and just need a "time out", the ones who've been led down the wrong path / started life with a "bad hand" (as the gamblers say) and just need some genuine care, attention, support and a second start to be outstanding people, those who need some serious "tough love" to understand what the rules are and that they WILL be obeyed, less they face even worse consequences ... and those who aren't worth shooting simply because it'd be a waste of ammo, but should instead be hog-tied and thrown into a big septic tank under the prison to slowly starve and drown in waste.
Tragically, the system in most first world countries is simultaneously not willing to be compassionate to those who need compassion, while being too merciful to those who have genuinely earned extreme, Gitmo-levels of punishment brought upon them.

He is currently serving a 40 year prison sentence.

Thank God the girl told her friend everything. The friend told the police that her friend met him online and that they were going to a motel and he picked her up from the dollar store. He was released on a $15,000 bail smh.

Just to be clear, he's going to get locked up. Contrary to what movies would have people believe, bail only lets you go free until your trial. It's so innocent people have a way to not wait for their trial in jail if they didn't do anything, but obviously the downside is that guilty people can use it too. But once the trial happens and he is found guilty, he's going to jail and staying there. You can't just buy your way out.

Police officer deserves a medal and a promotion 100%. People are labeled heroes a lot for doing the bare minimum, but this officer went above and beyond and was able to save a young girl from what could have been a life of trauma.

Most likely, technology is what enabled this demon to take advantage of that girl.
hmmm, people can raise their kids how they want but I believe rather than making your child feel imprisoned by constantly watching everything they do, maybe instead teach them right from wrong at an early age so they don't make the decision to meet with some old guy off the internet. It's not healthy at all for a kid to feel like they have no freedom, many times that leads to them being more rebellious and doing stuff they would not otherwise do just because the parent said not to.
The goal is to successfully teach our kids right from wrong so we don't have to constantly be watching them, the former will always be better than the latter. This is from someone who is fresh out the teenage years & never felt compelled to break the rules or do a lot of dumb stuff. Certainly, it's your job as a parent to watch over the kid and make sure they're protected and doing the right thing, but by the time they are a teenager that base of right vs wrong should already be built, and from then on it should mostly be a hands-off approach to help develop independence. That's what I've seen work the most anyways
If you go rummaging around your kid's stuff and raise them too strictly, they will go running in the arms of the assholes like the 22 year old dude in this video or do stupid shit in an act of rebellion. You have to sit down with them and explain that it's not safe to meet total strangers in a motel room, of all places. Also, not every parent is smart enough to notice the changes and some youngsters are pretty good at lying, acting, pretending they are little angels, at home at least. Parenting is not an easy job.

You can teach you kid many things. You know like shooting a gun. It doesn't meant that some kids won't take that a step further. KIDS ALWAYS TAKE IT A STEP FURTHER. AND I was correct in my assumption. She lived with her grandmother. NOT her parents. That alone should tell you something. Grandparents don't parent like parents because they've already done their jobs. They parent like Grandparents and let you get a way with more things than parents. You know like the Grandparents stash of stuff for the grand kids, the brownies, the cookies, the ice cream.... Diligence is due UNTIL THEY LEAVE HOME and even then a parent is always always first and foremost a parent. Teaching right from wrong is a plus plus, but the world is no longer like it was. It is, as you could see from this report, far far more dangerous. My great niece was almost snagged at her school bus stop the other day. The bus pulled up at just the right moment. Police, school, bus driver, the whole shebang involved. Dude gone... just vanished into the neighborhood. A predator, just not a online one. She was at that age of no mom PLEASE PLEASE don't walk me to the bus stop anymore. I can do it. You know that first step of moving on from a child to a kid. And unless you HAVE kids, what you've seen "work" isn't a 24/7/365 thing. So you truly do not know.

This dummy tried to use the old "I have mental health issues" (who doesn't these day's) but the judge wasn't buying that excuse and gave him 40yrs. The officer cried on the stand when recalling that night when he found her, so glad that she was brave enough to testify against him.

The guy never took the girl in the office. Tyler went inside and purchased a room so he didn't know that he was with a child. She most likely stayed in the car so that he wouldn't be caught with her so the clerk never seen anything suspicious, just a guy buying a room.

I don’t agree.. he did not follow the law in my view. He did not read him his Miranda rights, he threatened him to talk when he clearly was exercising his right to remain silent. Someone give this Deputy a medal. This is the only time I wouldn't bat an eye of the Deputy had said his bodycam "Malfunctioned". People that abuse children deserve the old testament kind of punishment.
