🇨🇦❤️My mother and brother were recovering alcoholics so I asked them to tell me if and when they thought I should stop drinking and my mother told me while we picked tomatoes in her garden.
It was a dramatic moment for me and I nodded and watched my tears drop down onto the tomatoes as I continued on with what I was doing. The best way to describe it was that it felt like a giant page in the storybook of my life had turned over. She took me to my first Alcoholics Anonymous meeting later that evening.
Alcohol had been my “friend” for about 15 years at that point, and I didn’t have to be accountable for my actions as long as my “friend” was in my life. That meant that my disregard for my own well being was somehow justified. Essentially, I wasn’t worth taking good care of, so no harm, no foul.
Sobriety was weird at first and I didn’t like it. I attended AA meetings off and on for a year, but as an atheist, the “higher power” aspect of the program wasn’t appropriate or applicable.
I stayed sober for thirty years and the only awkward aspect was the hostility exhibited by a few of my former drinking buddies, and that was ultimately inconsequential.
After my life’s major responsibilities were completed, (parenthood, career, etc.), I decided to try a sip of wine and to my astonishment, I didn’t like it! I tried spirits, beer and as many other types of alcoholic beverages as I wanted and I had completely lost my desire for alcohol!
That was ten years ago and I’m still not interested in drinking. I have beer, wine and spirits in my home, but they’re used mostly for cooking and baking. I’d rather have an iced coffee or a glass of milk or water these days.
If I hadn’t stopped drinking, I would have died long ago.

I was a moderate drinker. But, I was also a consistent drinker. Couple of beers after work every evening, maybe a few more on the weekends. Never got real drunk. One day a friend told me he was quitting drinking for a week. Said if one cannot put it down for a week, that is a sure sign you have a drinking problem. Made sense to me, so I took the challenge. Quitting drinking for a week left me feeling so much better, when the week was up I decided to carry on for an additional week! The benefits of general well being, and getting so many more things done that needed doing, convinced me that alcohol was a total liability. I never did go back to it. That must have been around 1999, 2000 and honestly I never missed dropping alcohol from my life. It wasn't that hard to do either.

I think for many of us, as we get older the joy of drinking diminishes. I'm 51 and I drink far less now than even a few years ago, and its not some sort of conscience decision. It doesnt taste as good, I get hung over with far less alcohol, I hate the hangovers, I get full and tired after a few beers ect. In fact, I bought a case of beer a month ago and still have 12 of them left, just a few years ago, that might not have lasted a weekend. I have other friends that are experiencing the same thing, many experienced it in their 40s. Whiskey hangovers are too bad, for me to really drink it much any more. I still drink but its pretty much down to a few beers on a Saturday night because I dont go to the gym or work on Sunday. I just quit chewing a year ago. I think I'm becoming a mormon lol.

I've never been an alcoholic, but for a while I was having 1 drink (either a beer or a glass of whiskey) a day. For some reason, one day out of nowhere, I started on a drink at night after I got off work and immediately lost interest in it as if it just completely bored me. Poured the rest of it out and haven't had a craving for an alcoholic drink whatsoever since then. Now it's just water, tea, coffee, and carbonated water, and the clarity of mind I always have now is absolutely wonderful. I don't know what happened that last time I had an alcoholic drink, but I enjoy being sober and don't miss it.

  • @Will-no6te
    @Will-no6te 2 года назад +5

I did a year sober a while back and it was the best year of my adult life. I then tried drinking "one or two drinks on big occasions only" and that quickly went right back to old patterns.
I wasn't an alcoholic or a problem drinker, just performing consistently below what I was capable of in life. I find joy in performing well at things I'm passionate about, and even a drink or two can mess up sleep, and I can't give it my all the next day.
Back sober for 3 weeks and the benefits are creeping back in. Sleep is improving, I have more emotional control, and can focus more on things I care about.
For me, it's an "either or" scenario. Either I find joy in putting my best foot forward with passions, or I find temporary happiness in a couple of drinks throughout the week and cope with being mediocre. Tell myself it's ok.
The polite thing to say right now is "everyone is different and you need to find your own balance whatever drivel" but I don't buy it. Sounds like the excuses I made to sell myself short and drink.
Be careful with going back to "occasional drinks" - it'll catch up to you the moment you're not diligent. I hope you stay sober and keep enjoying both the non-alch beers and the piano :)

Congratulations! I never had a problem with alcohol but gave it up completely to be healthy and because of articles I have read about the bad effects of alcohol. Over a year ago I had dinner with friends who bought expensive wine and I drank some to be polite. It had a horrible effect on my brain. I am glad it happened because it solidified my commitment. I have discovered since that several of my friends do not drink alcohol. With other friends who still drink, I am the designated driver. I feel so much healthier and alive without it. I have read that one immediate effect of a drink of alcohol is brain inflammation. That can’t be good.

Totally. I used to be a hardcore weekend binge drinker, but eventually just got tired of all the downtime I was wasting on recovering from those weekend extremes (and it seems to take longer as I get older...). So I just let that habit fall by the wayside, and now I find my life generally has a baseline of more clarity, focus, and balance. I still don't think there is anything wrong with drinking, but I'm personally just not interested in it anymore. Happy that you also found new clarity and enjoyment--!

And then I got a notification about this video :-D

  • @wolfie1027
    @wolfie1027 4 года назад +8

I was CRACKING UP the entire way through your video!! 🤣🤣😂🤣😂 I've downloaded most of your courses at work..and because I love to learn, as I have my entire life, I have about 100 courses, at least, to play. Naturally, I'm getting a lot of links now to go to RUclips and don't have time to do so..but I clicked on yours, and I'm glad I did as it was so entertaining and funny!!! As far as drinking goes, I had to quit in my late 40s because I was getting SO many stomach aches. This was in great part thanks to corn syrup, which began to reach critical mass in my body in my late 40s after having ingested the crap for seemingly decades..I later found out..They put it in beer too!! No wonder. I was getting so much stomach distension and stomach pain..no doctor could figure out what was wrong. I lost 25 lbs in 3 weeks which ended my inner debate that I couldn't lose weight lol!!! This happened because my stomach would only allow a handful of food a day. So the allergist's and the doctors were useless and I started to do my own research. I finally figured out it was corn syrup and I began eliminating it from my diet and all the symptoms subsided, and best of all I wasn't going to die of starvation! Thanks a lot doctors who knew nothing! Oh and by the way, so I went back to all my specialists and I told them it was corn syrup that was causing my problems and they just stared at me with a blank look on their face, lol. It took my stomach a year to mend, which meant I could not imbibe anything that would be acidic or corrosive, and this list included soda, coffee, high fat foods..and anything with HFCS..corn syrup..AKA maltodextrin, etc. I couldnt even eat corn. Its a dastardly toxin. It is amazing that it took so many years to reach the end of the line, I think.
Because I couldn't have alcohol during that time, I began to adapt to not drinking it at all. To me alcohol always signified fun in the sun, happiness at night and a party to be had with interesting people that I could converse with. Also when I was younger it was a great way to break through my inhibitions. Later I developed my own strategies to break out of my shell and no one would have ever dreamt I had ever been shy. Waaaaaaa.. haha.

I liked the playfulness and cleverness of this video.
Anti-alcohol or alcohol warning sites are usually run by dour recovering alcoholics keen to monetise their recovery, you have a different approach. Though you regard alcoholism as something that has nothing to do with you, but confess to having some fondness for alcohol. I’m of a more liberal mindset and though not suffering from the more gross aspects of alcoholism; being blackout drunk, behaving disgracefully and not remembering, appalling friends and family while drunk etc, I believe that the net of alcoholism is broader than this. I think of myself as mildly alcoholic. I gave up alcohol about 8 months ago and have found that it’s a little bit of a struggle. I mix only occasionally with other drinkers and I mostly drank alone. I have tried on a previous occasion a few years ago to stop drinking, I got to 8 months off, but visited Singapore where the heat and continuous thirst directed my thoughts to alcohol, particularly beer. I now find that I’m never very far from an innocent or non-alcoholic drink. I should mention that I’m 72 years old and like you I began drinking aged 14. I don’t think that there’s a good side to alcohol or that it has any positives at all.
I’ve given up drinking alcohol and never intend returning to the habit. I need constant reminders of why that is and value your very kind video, for which thanks, alcohol is I believe, far more insidious and dangerous than you allow. Best of luck with your project to control its use in your life, and to all others engaged in similar activity. ❤❤❤😁😁😁

Hmmm, I stopped drinking over twenty years ago. At first, I took the traditional route. I went to meetings and subscribed to the belief systems, alcohol, lifelong recovery, and disease theory. I quickly realized if I kept thinking about drinking or not drinking, I was going to start drinking again. Because it kept the alcohol ball in play and was always on my mind by going to meetings and talking about my past and other’s struggles with alcohol. So, I stopped talking, thinking, and adapting my identity around alcohol and got on with my life. About ten years ago, I looked for answers why I didn't struggle and found neuroplasticity provided a lot of clues. Simply put, I stopped walking the same path and forged a new one. I never talked about it and lived a life without any limitations of being around alcohol and if I ever wanted to drink I would. I just haven't wanted to. I didn't drink for taste. I drank for effect. Who I am today I have no interest in affecting my reality. Have you ever read or listened to Marc Lewis?

I am on my 43rd day of sobriety. I did seven weeks a few years ago during Covid and felt good but it was for medical reasons and I went back to drinking during the holidays. This time I don’t know what made me stop, but I just had a marital separation felt like I was drinking too much wine nightly and I gained almost 10 pounds. I decided to cut alcohol out and I’m on my 43rd day, I honestly feel like you and what you described. I don’t even want to go back. I’ve been drinking since I was probably 13 and I haven’t done much binge drinking in my time. But I also as an adult started to drink a couple glasses of wine with dinner every night. Anyway, I decided to do sober October but I actually started in the middle of September at and like I said, I am about a month and a half in. Thanks for your video.

Great effort! I never really drank alcohol, except during my studying days because of peer pressure. Just never really liked it. Similar as smoking and all that. But from the socially induced vices towards an cup of tea or coffee, maybe small, but ultimately the same questions arise. There is a physical/mental reaction especially when drinking coffee that has triggered a lot of debate about it use and its health effects. The next step would be the amount of food you take, especially important in this age where so many people are obese. In the end the conclusion could be that every type off food has its effect it is possibly only the quantities you take in. Anyway, the discussion on this subject is not finished....my brain tells me I have other things to do.....

After drinking alcohol-free Guinness for many months, I tried the regular version and it tasted like the alcohol-free version.. but with added hairspray. I thought something was wrong with it at first but then I realised it's what my 14 year old self experienced when I first tried beer.
    Long live alcohol-free versions 👍

Mental anguish, and emotional rollercoaster.....oooffff. Dealing with life without the liquid sedative is a painful wake up call. But only then do we realize how sedated we really were! Good luck to anyone going through it! 🎉🎉 It will, unfortunately, never get any easier... to stop. Alcohol is extremely addictive.

I’d be curious to hear how your experience is with this now, after so much time. Did you find a new balance with little to no alcohol? Or did the old habits kick back in? What’s the effect on your brain?
I definitely recognize what you’re saying. I’ve had several completely alcohol free periods of several months (also currently) and the clarity is amazing. The social pressure (fellow European here) is tough, I think. It’s not “gezellig” (Dutch word for something like convivial) if you don’t join. Alcohol free wine is indeed not a true option and I can’t do (alcohol free) beer bc of a gluten allergy. I’m happy to see the alcohol free drinks are more and more accepted now!

Today is my 100th day without drinking. I decided to see how long I could go back at the start of the year. Never said I would never drink again. I just wanted to see how long I could push myself. I was drinking anywhere from 6-12 cans of beer everyday. I had known I had an issue with self control for awhile but things started to get really serious when I started drinking before work. At my worst I was having to drink almost 6 beers before driving to work. I’d start around 9am most days. Then after work I’d finish the other 6 in my car outside of my house so I could hide it from my family. Still to this day I don’t think anyone really knew how bad it got.
If I’m going to be honest. I think I do miss drinking. I miss how music sounded when I was drunk. I miss how happy I felt around my friends kicking back and slamming beers. As terrible as it sounds, I think I kind of miss the extra challenge being drunk added to driving home.
Now I’m 100 days in to sobriety and I’m bored. Plain and simple. I don’t know when or if I’ll pick it back up again but I do hope that if I do, I’ll be smarter and safer about it.
I’m trying to be proud of myself. But that’s a whole different thing I struggle with. I think I’m just impressed that I lasted this long.

Even when I think of the hell I was in whilst drinking (many, many bottles of wine a day) I still feel like I want to drink again, even although I know I’ll be back in hell again!! Don’t know what the heck is wrong with me but it’s quite nice knowing others feel like I do.

I'm 59 now and quit drinking back in '98. Drinking was becoming more of a habit than an occasional libation. So I quit drinking and bar-tending and started over with a nice job working at LA County Department of Parks and Recreation at South Coast Botanic Garden. 100% change in my life and lifestyle. I didn't do the "12 step program" I'm not religious and I don't crave alcohol, I despise it because of the way I felt about myself when I was drinking. Now I'm as healthy as I ever was, and don't miss it a bit. I drink NA beer around others, mainly to make them more comfortable - I like St Pauli NA as my favorite. Heineken Zero is real good and when I was in Ireland (didn't think they would even make NA beer), but they do and I found a great one, just don't remember the brand. Lastly on this, when I quit drinking, I found I was experiencing extreme anxiety and was diagnosed with depression. Now I'm trying to get off the medication... The moral? In moderation kids, moderation. My new vice? Meditation - it works!

Also like the Jenever Fun 0.0% beer - very crisp and dry, which is unusual for a zero alcohol. Also tried a 0.0% Guinness the other day, and that was as good as the original!

Interesting. I go alcohol free every February, kind of a 'spring cleaning' . First week I kinda miss an evening glass of wine a few nights a week but I know its temporary. After the full month it's not uncommon to go even longer until a social occasion arises and I have a few beers with the boys. Actually having a glass of Cabernet while watching this, first glass in a week but with summer coming up I'm interested in which non alcoholic beers you found acceptable? I used to like the Warsteiner 0.5% but its very hard to find here (Canada) .

I've never had an addictive personality, at least not since my early 20s. I don't like to feel out of control. I enjoy good wine, beer and spirits. I drink for the taste. My girlfriend used to drink a bit much but I inspired her to moderate. She got me to drink more. I had gotten to where a bottle of scotch was taking years to finish. I easily went months without a drink. Now I enjoy it a little more. It doesn't matter. It never has ruled me. I feel the same about espresso and Cuban cigars.

I miss the feeling of the first beer taking away my anxiety and making me feel more relaxed. Anyway, I'm sure it's healthier, just not feeling great, and I was only drinking 8 to 12 beers a week. Sometimes over the week or in a day or two. Iunno, maybe it's just me or will take more time to feel better.

When I'm not drinking I'm so much more productive, but surely there should be more to life than crossing things off a to-do list (and I'm not sure the stuff on the list is that important anyway). I miss those lazy 'wasted' (as in wasting of time - and killing brain cells) afternoons/evenings drinking 'too much'. I wish I could find a way to disconnect and have a short break from life when sober. Mediation is great, but its hard and doesn't come in a convenient 750ml bottle. I agree the alcohol free beers are amazing, and the industry is up over 300% this year here in Australia, so I'm really looking forward to more options!

That's an interesting point to which I can actually really relate. I obly did a few weeks without drinking but I still had a similar experience.
I tried sober oktober the first time last year an i liked it so much that I even extrnded it to 6 weeks. Then I did dry January and I also apontaniously decided to not drink in Mai.
I experienced something pretty similar to you, when I drank the first beer with alkohol again, I ould relly taste the alkohol out. It was like as if my brain told be there is something poisenous in there. It kinda felt like my tastebuds were doing a chemical analysis and sought out the bas substance it was really weard. Especially after drinking so much alcohol free beer before (I still not quite like the taste the same but as you I drink it way more today and always have alcohol free beer at home as well).
Of course after only a few weeks without alcohol my brain was "reset to default" pretty quickly and after I had a few beers it decided that I "liked" the taste again.
The brain is a scary powerful thing in such regards...

awesome news Greg,, having been drinking non alcoholic beer for quite some time now, you learn a few things,,people respond to a person who states they dont drink differently than to someone who they think does drink,,, so I take my Hahn Zero or whatever I have that has no alcohol, and just fit in,,everyone sees me with a beer in my hand and accepts me as one of them,,,with me the only one knowing the truth of what I am drinking, unless someone asks me, and then I can tell them,it has no alcohol in it, let them try it and see for them selves that it tastes exactly the same as beer with alcohol,,, they are usually impressed and maybe down the road they will try it for themselves,,,as for the wine,,,there are some really good ones out there that have the alcohol removed and you cant tell the difference, except it doesnt have that pull to aggressively drink more,,,look for the ones that state " alcohol removed " some supermarkets have a small range, and on line you will find a range as well,,,just type in "wine with alcohol removed " , and you should get a wide selection,,, watch out for the triggers to return to the old habit of drinking alcoholic stuff and if you do, just stop again,,no need to tell you how you will feel the next day,,I accidently did it once, drank one glass before I realised, and it took three days to get over the effects of it,,never again,,ya dont need it,, oh, you will be surprised at some of the feelings and attitudes that you will have to face in the social situations ,,,as the old saying goes,,,,stay on the path, lol,,,,,

First beer at 14 also here, and yeah it was awful! First beer I really enjoyed, I was in my mid-late 20s and I was dared by a guy who'd been a motorcycle messenger in England to follow him from Cook's Corner (motorcycle hangout in S. California) to a British pub in Anaheim. I just managed to keep up because he was even crazier in traffic than I was, and besides he had a more agile bike. I got into the pub just in time to sit down and he puts a pint of Guinness in front of me. WTF is this shit, I thought, even the foam is brown. But I drank it, and when I was done, the alcohol did its work and I felt good, like I'd accomplished something. These days I'd really like to find a non-alcoholic Guinness that tastes at least almost the same.
