  • Cantaloupe is actually a vine plant, and has tendrils, that climb up things (if you let them). Cantaloupe prefers growing off the ground, and if you want a better harvest, with fuller fruit, and less bugs trying to eat it before you do, let your cantaloupe climb up the side of a fence.

Hello Rick. I really like all your videos. I would like to work toward this lifestyle. Knowing you both, you did your research on where to create your homestead taking countless factors into account. What general area did you settle on? I am researching locations now. Thanks again for the videos!

What are your search parameters? What things are you looking at that you want, and what things are you searching for that you want to avoid? Also, I am working on a new book right now about how to get off the grid, that will be addressing things like this. And, have you explored coming to Prepper Camp? www.PrepperCamp.com Lots of good information there about how to live the lifestyle we do.

@@SurvivalistGardener Thanks for the reply. Looking for good climate, like minded people, not too steep of terrain with decently fertile soil. Of course, we will form our own soil over time, but have to have decent rainfall, springs, decent state government despite us being rural, no temp extremes if possible, hunting/fishing opportunities as a bonus. We are in Texas but was thinking maybe E. Texas, Ozarks (NE Oklahoma/NW Arkansas/SE Missouri), E. Tenn. Kentucky. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated and look forward to getting your new book. Thanks for the Prepper Camp tip. I will take a look.

How do you keep them from falling off the vine when they’re ripe? Aren’t cantaloupes the ones that harvest themselves by disconnecting themselves from the vine when they’re ready?

LoganKirkman The simplest way to keep them from falling off is to support them in slings. This also works for squash, watermelon, and any other vining plants with heavy fruits. Just make sure that the supports are strong enough to support the weight of the plants.

We typically watch them as they start to get ripe, and as they get "brown veins". If they start getting soft, we take them down before the bugs can start drilling holes in them.

Found you on another site love what you are doing, had something similar in uk nicely hidden but had rotten blueberries move in and they drew to much attention to site.
Due to the comment below by Michael Martin, I’ll go on Amazon and look at your book.
Also like him we were going to move to x place but on research it was very bad choice, so still like the idea of Siberia, Alaska was on the list but not sure how true is mind control experiments I know it’s reall but will Alaska be one of the first places to use it against its citizens, also the military being called in due to Russia would this be a target, so gave me concern. Other place Missouri don’t know why but it popped into my head I like this idea as there is similar people and a community on research.
I just want somewhere hidden tree canopy, the more wilderness forest the better, as this means good water table and other reasons, with community, a place to raise children, build a good bunker with hydroponics etc so I can store 7 to 14 years of food for worst case scenario, I used to be happy just looking for a homestead place with community but now I want long term safety I want to protect the people I love and build on that community so we will survive .
Where we are a farmer would not sell his land surrounding people did so a new housing estate was being built he had say 11 water points now only 3 working as the construction planners affected the water table, he’s trees started to die, shocking, we also have a thing called compulsory purchase, scary
Going to check out and enjoy more of your videos while I can, all the best to you.

You might want to consider some of the more wooded and secluded areas of Tennessee.
