Scotty, I bought a '95 Jeep Grand Cherokee. That's my horror story. The usual; fuel pump went bad, electrical issues plagued it, battery never stayed charged. After everything was fixed it still wouldn't run. I traded it for a running 1993 2.3L, 5-speed Ford Ranger, which ran for five years, no problem. I gave it away when I bought my next car.

Very good article, with brisk delivery and logical narration. The points about overfilling were clear and persuasive.
And viewers got a bonus-- the argument against running on a low fuel tank (below one-fourth tank) have not been made anywhere else (on RUclips). Running low risks bringing debris into the fuel line and damage to the fuel pump. And how many drivers know they have a fuel filter?
The old myths about gasoline volume shrinking during cold weather or overnight at the gas station were widely accepted, but few reflected that wineries use the constant temperature of soil to maintain their wine fermentation process. Likewise, the Germans with their beer, because soil is a good thermal insulator.
Although cellphones are not documented for causing a single flash fire at a gas pump, anti-static measures at gas pumps are more persuasive, especially in winter. Dry air allows a static charge to accumulate on even hand-held, plastic gas containers, which is why gas stations require such containers to be placed on the ground/concrete before filling.
    * I especially like the improved signature opening

I’ve seen on your show where you said . don’t overfill or top off your gas tank. One thing you didn’t say inn this video was that overfilling or topping of can make your service engine soon light come on. Well I’ve been topping my 2003 ford E250 off for the past two years . Never had a problem. Then about a month ago the service engine soon light came on. Had it checked and the guy at Winchester auto parts checked it and couldn’t tell me what the problem was. So he cleared the code. It stayed off for another couple of fill ups. Still topping it off. Then it came back on. Well following your advice on another video, saying not to ever top it off or a service engine soon light would come on so my landlord mechanic cleared the code, and I haven’t topped it off cents it’s been about a month now, and no light comes on, so I want to. Thank you for your great advice because I probably would’ve never figured out what it was. Thank you for your great advice. Keep on giving that great advice out. I appreciate it and so many other people you do a great job. Keep it up Godspeed.

When you have to drop the tank to change the pump and it always came in with a "near full" tank of gas in it. Ultra Heavy, Hard to syphon/pump out, pretty much guaranteed to get a nice stinky Gas Bath doing it. Yep, 1/4 tank and I always look for a gas station.

I was a transmission builder (we and the electronics guys are the highest paid individuals of any full-service repair shop) and one of the rules with the pump in an automatic transmission is if it can move the vehicle, the transmission has enough fluid in it to keep from burning up the pump. Same with a fuel pump. If it can run the engine, it is getting enough fuel run thru it to stay cool and lubricated. Simple as that. Now, consider never letting the tank run lower than 1/4 full. Every time you fill up, you are only replacing 3/4 of the fluid in the tank at the most. The rest is stale, and over time, this could possibly cause running problems.

Well I had to replace that EVAP canister on my 2000 Grand Am and my mechanic even told me not to do that but I still get more gas by continuing to fill it up. So I'm not sure, Scotty says you don't see any significant reasons to doing that but I can get up to half a gallon by doing that and really I've only been doing that because of the crazy fuel prices, but maybe its not a good thing if I'm sending fuel back to the pump. Newer cars have more range due to fuel efficiency and larger tanks so I'm looking to get a Honda Civic or Accord in the future.

I’ve been in the habit of topping of the gas tank since 1972. I heard vehicles from 1996 and newer that over filling is a bad idea. I learned this too late. My current 2006 pickup, I’ve owned since new, with 135K on the odometer. The past few years it’s gradually getting worse at accepting gas into the tank. I got to the point where it would only accept 3.5 gallons (on empty) very slowly, and pump would not fuel any further. I paid mechanic about $1300. (To repair). The fuel goes in very slowly, but I can fill it. I wish I could have heard this sooner. When I got my truck back from the mechanic, (a week ago), I filled up in the normal way, by topping off the tank, so it is absolutely full. I realize my conduct caused this problem (now).

Honda and Toyota both have one-way valving systems to stop liquid back feed to happen from the tank to the vapor system. Along with bubble top tanks designed to have a 1 liter air bubble at the top of the tank you can not fill with fuel. These have been in use for over 8 years.

Back in the 70's I was maintaining and driving a fleet of Dodge B300 passenger vans. They had steel tanks which could hold 26 gallons, but because of a bad filler design, you couldn't easily get more than 22 gallons into those tanks. It was bad enough that Dodge revised their "specifications" to a 22 gallon tank. When I was patient and let the tank burp, I could get the extra 4 gallons in. Especially when driving cross country, I liked to assure that extra range.

Most of the time I've just been refueling when my car tells me to. I think I will stop doing that and refuel much earlier, thank you!
As for horror stories, my old car had a problem where refueling could take up to 30 minutes because I think there was a blockage or something in the pipe, and the gasoline would quickly rise up and trigger the automatic shutoff valve. I had to feather the pump and fill the tank agonizingly slowly until the tank was full. AND ON TOP OF THAT, THE FUEL GAUGE WAS BROKEN. It was a complete nightmare to deal with, and when the transmission eventually went out I was relieved to be rid of that problem, despite how much I liked that car.

Mhhh! I've been told, 3 or 4 years ago that, my whole gas tank/Evap, solenoid...etc... needs to be replaced because, the lock ring which holds the sensor/fuel pump/sending unit is made out of metal and, it is no longer tight meaning, it is rotten. Compared to older models, it appears that this ring is molded to the tank, not like the good old days that required a hammer and flat head screwdriver, to spin that ring off. I was a mechanic until early 90's. A lot of "stuff" changed and it infuriate me. Can't rebuild nothing in nowadays. Just replace and throw away the core. By the way, my vehicle is a 2010 Silverado. I'll change the fuel filler cap first but, it seems to be available at the car dealer ONLY. "Sailor coarse language".

The problem, Mr. Kilmer, is many gas stations have aging nozzles and/or our vehicles have an aging evap system, and the nozzle shuts off prematurely. I can think of many instances where I've been able to pump several *gallons* of gas after continuing past the first nozzle shut-off (often re-starting the nozzle many times), and at least one instance where I took the nozzle shutoff as "done" and almost ran out of gas on the way home despite having more than enough gas capacity to make the trip, had the tank actually been full. I *always* try to get another slow "snort" of gas in, unless I am completely unconcerned with having a full tank.
Perhaps in a future video, you can explain why some older cars seem to trip the gas nozzle prematurely. My 1990's Civic seems to be especially prone to that, whereas my mid 2000's Caravans less so.

I ALWAYS Top off the tank before a long trip, I don’t like running down to empty or when the fuel light comes on and don’t have a problem with sediment or water in our Yaris. The only thing likely to prevent me topping off is the need for funds …. It gets up past 40c here in summer and so topping up for just around town is not so sensible as when you park a black Yaris in the sun and it overflows while you shop … fuel expands most when in your fuel tank in the heat … best not keep it in the car with you if you can help it ….

I remember two brands of older cars: Honda's and Chryslers that when gas was low and the car was in an incline it had a hard time starting. No major issues when on a level surface It had to do with the design of the fuel pump. Also fuel lubricates the pump and cools it too.
