Ballyhoo are all over the bays in the summer months. I used to take my flounder boat out and once we filled a limit of flounder, we would break out big nets with small mesh and net ballyhoo. They are thick in the flats, with the best area around 3 feet of water. You can't net them from behind -they're just too fast. But if you come at them slowly from the front, they are pretty easy to net. We learned to just keep going until we had 5 or 6 in the net before dumping it. After we had several dozen, we would head to the jetties. Big trout LOVE ballyhoo. We used a single 5/O croaker hook on a heavy leader. Bring the hook up from the bottom of it's mouth, and out through that hard bone in the top of the heat. They are oily and tough, and we often caught 3-4 fish on a single ballyhoo. And don't worry about the size. We would happily fish with ballyhoo 12-15 inches long. Early on we would bring an underwater light, but we learned that we caught bigger fish in the dark. There is "phosphorus" in the water in the warmer months - small jellyfish that light up when something disturbs them. When you're fishing dark, they really show up. That's when we started to understand how violent a big trout strike is. When they blast a ballyhoo, there is a streak and then a great big ball of light in the water. Trout also understand that they have to come at ballyhoo from the front, so even though we only had a single hook up in the beak, we rarely missed a hook-up, even on those great big ballyhoo. I know this part is going to sound like a fish story, but those big jetty fish looked like DuraFlame logs in the ice chest. We didn't even bat an eye at 25 inch fish, and we caught fish that size every trip. But we caught a good number of 28+ fish. I haven't kept fish over about 22" in a long time, but back then we didn't think anything of keeping those big fish. There were some nights when we couldn't catch trout because the big redfish would crush the ballyhoo almost as soon as they hit the water. We would anchor up at the jetties, and to keep from swinging you have to set an anchor in front and another in back. One night the trout bite just suddenly died. We found out why when I hooked a tarpon that we estimated from length and girth to be around 50 lbs. I landed that fish at anchor on a Falcon rod and a Calcutta reel. So tarpon will eat a ballyhoo too. We also used to go out in the flounder boat the nights before we were going offshore, and net up a bunch of them. All that started out to say, yes there are ballyhoo all over the bays in the summer and fall. They start thinning out in October, and they are usually pretty much gone by November, depending on water temperature. I have to admit, I have never seen anyone foul hook one the way you did. I can almost guarantee you that you bumped into him from the front.
BTW - I saw a couple of people comment that it was a needle fish. Nope. I know you know this, but needle nose have two long jaws and teeth. Ballyhoo have a small mouth on top, and a long beak on the bottom. Also, ballyhoo have a red tip on the end of that beak. Needle nose never have that. That was a ballyhoo.
wow one day I want to catch a sheepshead for the first time. I saw last vid you use mono for your main line and this time you use braid . Is there any differnt?
Awesome trout and what part of the Jetty's was the caught at going to Rockport in about two weeks and don't have a boat but what Jetty's do you recommend to go to and what kinda live bait to use, Thank you...
@@JettyMan O lol I was like wth lol!! Balihoo that’s was a rare catch for sure ima try cast netting for them next time they’re trout candy when u cutt the long thing on there mouth…
Wait, what's the regulations on speckled trouts? I've fished in Galveston and never heard, or seen what regulations there are against keeping speckled trout.
I would see them about 10 years ago by the pier under the bridge coming up not the island called clems marina they would swim up to the light eating the minnows swarming the lights under the pier idk if the lights or pier is still there though

Where every thing that comes into the bays, and leave the bay is JETTIES.. Port A is a great place to fish. So yes there excellent places to fish > Lot of good eating on that fish! Shame had to throw it back in! Same with REDFISH! I hated like hell had to throw them back in. Males? FEMALES YES! NP WITH THAT..

Congrats on the trout! That was massive! Glad to see them back. 🔥🐟🤙
Yes sir can’t wait to catch more 💪🏻
Dammm bro! That trout was big! Great content
Thank you 🙌
Wow, what a nice trout! Super happy that you follow the regulations!
Of course!
First time viewer, glad you show your fishing set up.
Nice trout DAD 👍
😃👍
See the ballyhoo all the time out there fishing the surf, past week has been flat and fairly visible, great bait to get if you have a cast net on hand
Great video try using a shallow water large rapala with a fairly fast retrieve
I will give it a shot soon !
Thanks. Can you recommend a color, please?
@@joshgordon2484 For me I like blue and white, green and white, its also good to have a bright color one
Whats the model of lure?
Dam good catch bro, 👌🏾
25.5” is my all time trout PR. Caught mine in San Leon 😎
Love the thumbnail ❤🎉
thanks ! 😃👍
Ey we all have thumbnails 😂
Congratulations to your pops. Thx for sharing the new info on the regulations. Great video.
Thanks 🙌
Man you're doing awesome
Great job at explaining for people who could use the knowledge 👏 🤘
Of course brother thanks 🙏
Great catch
Thanks !
Good job. How deep did set the slip cork for? Size single hook and under the shrimps horn.
Around 9ft deep. Size 4 j hook.
Nice day fishin'!
😃👍
Man, I would love to be fishing there. Wish it was closer! New sub here
Thanks for sub! Yeah it’s a pretty awesome place !
wow one day I want to catch a sheepshead for the first time. I saw last vid you use mono for your main line and this time you use braid . Is there any differnt?
I was using mono this time too. I just had a shorter leader you can see it on the video. Mono is better for live bait and braid is better for spoons.
@@JettyMan that Yellow line is not braid?
Yes. Braid. On top of the braid is mono.
hell yeah JettyMan !! another killer video at the jetties ! Awesome ..what rod and reel do you use ?
Twin power 5000 2015 model. Rod Okuma 9’6 cecillio light
Awesome trout and what part of the Jetty's was the caught at going to Rockport in about two weeks and don't have a boat but what Jetty's do you recommend to go to and what kinda live bait to use, Thank you...
I fish the surfside jetty in Freeport
Live shrimp is the best bait to use !
First time going out there this past weekend and caught my first fish ever! Ol sheephead
Congratulations! I’m happy you got your fist fish ! Hopefully many more to come !
@@JettyMan thanks
Did I c an ankle bracelet 😂lol!! Good catch.
Bro what ??? 😂😂 I don’t have no ankle bracelet 😂

Yo what mic do you use with the GoPro? Seems to handle the wind pretty well.
same question. I wonder if its the media mod?
Purple panda microphone.
Jettyman, how do you decide to fish surf side or Quintana side jetty?
Weather time of year and any reports.
Wait, what's the regulations on speckled trouts? I've fished in Galveston and never heard, or seen what regulations there are against keeping speckled trout.
3 a day in the slot size 15-20 and one over 30 inches that counts towards your daily limit
@@JettyMan Oh ok, for a second I thought it was you can't keep them at all. My family caught em a lot, and we kept a few.
looks awesome buddy. whats the water temperature?
It’s sitting at around 73F
I would see them about 10 years ago by the pier under the bridge coming up not the island called clems marina they would swim up to the light eating the minnows swarming the lights under the pier idk if the lights or pier is still there though
The pier and lights are still there and Clem’s that spot is killer for trout
Jettyman, what weight of sinker above the swivel?
1/2 oz
Nice brother 👌
Thanks !
Great video! Are your slip corks weighted?
No
thats crazy ive only seen ballywho in the florida keys and it is some great bait
That’s why I was so surprised. I thought it was a needle fish at first !
What kind of reel and rod you’re using bro? Dope vids too!
Are you specifically jetty fishing in Galveston, Texas city area?
One sec, ima add you on my main account
Yes
Hey brother this is my other account, I’m a fishing brand owner, and wanted to know if I could give you some free gear, shirt hat, etc
Send me an email with your information 👍
The only time I’ve caught sheepshead on the flats was on a spinner bait. It was weird
Wow lol that’s very weird !
@@JettyMan I thought it was a fluke the first time. The other times, I have no idea.
How many did you get ?
@@JettyMan I think I caught 4 or 5 that day. I was fishing shamrock cove on the south shoreline of cc bay.
What kind of spinner bait, please. Size, color, single blade,Colorado or willowleaf please?
What do you by mean 15-21 over 30?
New Texas regulations. 3 per person 15-20 one over 30 as part of your daily limit
Nice Atlantic needle nose there
Nope. Needle nose have two long jaws. Ballyhoo have a small mouth on top, and a long beak on the bottom. Also, ballyhoo have a red tip on the end of that beak. Needle nose never have that. He caught a ballyhoo.
@scotthime6928 couldn't tell at first but I looked back at it and saw the little lip.
Nice...wondering which jetty is this? Not packery channel
just imagine someone with a dead pole and a live mullet....gut hook
How do you hook your shrimp?
Under the horn by the head

I will include it next video I make 👍

Surfside pier in Surfside Tx. It’s just south of Galveston and close to the Brazos River Outlet
Jangan diberi tau, nanti dia membawa pasukan 😂😂😂

Yeah was there !
Yeah I was there *
Trout is 15-20” now to keep
That’s right 👍
Where's this at? Fixing take my grandkids looking for decent spot
Surfside jetty Texas. Good spot just be careful because the rocks can be slippery and dangerous
Use half a crab to catch 50 inch redfish
Trouts are in salt water???
That 20 to 30 release is kind of dumb, if you ask me...
Definitely agree, good thing where close to Lousiana
Dude!!
When was this jettyman. Jettyman living large . Twin and stella?
What reel do you prefer out of these two? Dad is a good net man.
I prefer the Stella for live bait and the twin power for spoon/artificial. This was last Saturday. Thanks again for your comment Abraham!
I had to rewind a lil when I heard Stella!!
Muni Long 🤑
Thx for the vid
🤑🤑
Where u at?
why did u throw big trout ?
what are the rules for it ?
3 per person 15-20. Or 30+ any fish from 21-29 needs to be released

Color enhancements. RUclips lowers the thumbnail resolution so I fix the colors to make it more appealing
