First Generation Honda Insight EGR Plate Inspection and Cleaning

The EGR plate can clog up solid with carbon and many people find cleaning it helps with hesitation/shudder from the engine when a load was put on it or at acceleration. In this video I was doing more of a exploratory adventure into the EGR plate and didn't have any gaskets or even a torque wrench on hand. It is highly recommended that you that you replace the gasket - Gasket part number: 17146-PHM-004 . It is also recommended to replace the 3 O-rings on the individual intake runners. They are of a rubbery material and can harden and distort over time. Part Number: 17106-PHM-006

In this video I reused all of the old gaskets and That isn’t best practices. I seem to have gotten away with it for now. Part numbers in the description box under the video. Also a very good link to a insight central write up on the EGR plate removal process.

Your EGR plate was essentially clean compared to mine. I see no blockage on yours.

does that improve mileage or just reduce emissions ?

It's entirely an emissions thing... but since the engine is designed to operate with it working, it can become a performance thing... such as if it gets stuck open, or if it is clogged it will run too lean sometimes (since the exhaust gasses are supposed to prevent that). If this engine were designed without EGR it would almost definitely run better across the board, but it world produce more NO2 emissions etc...
