Confirm that. Was at the SJBC WNC two weeks ago for the first time. Chris took me to the start and showed me (complete noob) around the course. He's a super friendly fellow!
I rode this course 3 laps at the 'Tour de Mar" a two day stage race in 1965.. First day was a little crit around Pescadero, then this course the second day. Got dropped on the final climb and couldn't catch what was left of the group on the last descent. I think Mike Pickens won by 5 minutes. Who cares where I finished, I sure don't. I was just glad I did it. What a great course to race bikes. Good on you guys.

When you’re a crit racing sprint specialist, it’s so important for team building to show up at the hilly road races and switch to a support role. When I started racing I was on an amateur club team, and one of the things that I emphasized was that none of us was a superstar, but everyone had a contribution to make, and any of us could win a race on any given day with a properly coordinated team effort. I live in New England, and there are hilly road races and fast technical crits. I was one of the crit racers who would play support for the road racers, and not only did I bank credit for help at the crits, training hill repeats and support riding at the road races made me faster and stronger in the sprints.
I'm definitely not at the same level as these guys. I race cat 4 and masters, but I can relate to the emotional outburst at winning. I'm not the strongest or fastest guy. I've had some good results with top 5 and top 10 finishes. However, I did cross the line 1st in one race a few years ago. Knowing how hard it is to win with my abilities, I screamed too. It was hundreds of hours of hard work and doubt erupting in one combined explosion of emotions. I may never experience it again, but I got to once. That's more than a lot of people can say. Thanks for the video.

Congrats. What did you call the type of climbing when you start at the front and gradually drop back?
"Sag" climbing, you start near the front and slowly sag to the rear through the climb. But not off the back completely, that way when everyone lays off on the descent you can make your places back up
I've also heard it called "LAG" climbing.
Was the finish at the top of Haskins? (thought they used to finish down in Pescadero)

I noticed that there were still a few riders on rim brake bikes. Would the weight savings with rim brakes be a slight advantage in a race like this? Few riders can afford both top level rim AND disc brake bikes.
A few grams makes no difference Your brain and legs are everything.
The ~500g difference between a rim-brake build and an equivalent disc-brake build is worth maybe .1mph at 6.5w/kg on a 7% climb. It might be the difference in a photo finish, but these climbs never end in a photo finish. Meanwhile the disc bike will help on Stage Rd descent if you decide to attack there, and it will help on damp days...Pescadero is frequently covered in a marine layer, it happened not to be that day.
I had built a disc bike up just before this race and hadn't sold my rim brake bike yet (both factor O2s) so I had the option and chose disc.
The disc bike weighed about 350 grams more but I still chose it due to the descent down from the main climb and the second descent on stage road. Both are very high speed (~40 mph/65kph avgs) with a few corners that require heavy breaking. Both are also after the key climbing sections in the race.
Being able to brake later and be in more control allowed me to grow gaps that were caused on the climbs as well as lower my heart rate quicker. Which I think saved me more energy than the 1.5 watts I lost due to it on the final climb.
It's crazy that this is on half open roads with oncoming traffic. So unnecessarily dangerous

@@pancakekun9008 junior racers have had gearing limits. But they're being removed going forward due to junior gearing supply shortages.

This bike was really easy to assemble ruclips.net/user/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.

I need 2 explanations though, if I can:
1. why is only one person a state champ, if you are all saying it is a team sport realy? The whole team is working for 1 guy to win, but in the end only that person is the champ and not the whole team? It's like if only the best scorer would be NBA champ and not the team. Or in the NFL, only quarterback would be the champ. No, if the whole team is working towards the same goal and helping in, all should be champs or at least on the podium.
2. Why is the "podium" turned towards the sun so that all the d*cks are sticking out so much? :P
I thought the same thing about world champs and Olympics too. Same thing but much bigger scale.
@@daviddang82 exactly. Those should be like that eve more, since countries are represented. However for us (Slovenia) it is already hard to decide who to work with since we have 2 best cyclist on the world in Pogačar and Roglič. Sweet worries though. hahaha... Still, should be a team champ not a single rider.
This is why many teams, including team Mike's bikes, shares any winnings with the whole team. But there's still only one person who is crowned champ and it depends on the course and how the race develops. Successful teams are full of selfless riders who perform their respective roles

My only regret in life is not finding cycling until I was an obese 33 year old. I'm now 40 and fit as I can be but with Pesky coming up fast for 2023 (my second time racing it) I can only hope to not be last. Hey. That's still as good goal as any 🥲
