- Back in 2012, bassist Christian McBride stopped by the KNKX performance studios for a mini-concert with pianist Peter Martin. It was one of the most elevating duet performance we’d ever heard.
This time, though, Christian brought his trio with him: Pianist Christian Sands, and drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr.
Together they’re one of the most in-demand trios on the international club and festival circuit. And here they are, ready to play 3 wonderful pieces of music, just for you.
The Christian McBride Trio includes Christian McBride (bass), Christian Sands (piano), and Ulysses Owens, Jr. (drums).

Trio? They sound like a full orchestra! What a delight!
McBride has so much soul in in solo. He knows when to give space and when to fly off lyrically. Masterful player.
As a bassist I have many favorite bass players. I somehow totally get Christian's jazz movements; walking lines or solos (in a hugely different way than others). I feel them, and each note seems just right. Even when he plays those really fast movements when soloing it feels slowed down to my ears, and I hear each note (always feels wow), and I'm always blown away. I think he is my favorite jazz bassist of all my favorites.

If I had a nickel for every time I've come back to watch this trio....I could hire them! This is THE top shelf of jazz, no doubt...the symbiosis between all three artists is amazing...add to that a masterful, beautiful tune, and just....enjoy....

...Oh and I had the pleasure of meeting Christian at the jazz museum in harlem when I visited NY in 2011. What a memorable and humbling experience. such a down to earth guy. I must visit the museum again. yeah I will next year.

I love Christian Sands' playing. He's got a little bit of Bill Evans in him, some Bobbie Timmons too. But still sounds like himself.

Gorgeous..And a beautiful time feel/groove... It's hard to believe anyone clicked a thumbs down on this, but I guess you can't keep (2) everyone happy by playing something super tasteful, grooving and well conceived..... Nice one Mr McBride. GREAT trio.

@Matthew Chang, Leave Melumzi be! Your ideas about what is 'narrow-minded' or otherwise might just suggest that you too are of the same ilk, i.e. we don't all hear the same stuff, or in the same way. Dig? So, why not just chill... and enjoy? Just saying.
In my opinion these are some of the finest young jazz musicians alive today. Every single tune they're playing it sounds soo nice. Chris sands, amazing pianist, who has an incredibly beautiful sound, mcbride, who is also stunning on the bass, so much passion, and of course, the drummer, ulysses is superly creative. Amazing! :)

When listening to this piece without watching the video, I picture a 1950s small venue; dark, smokey, lots of small tables all jammed together, candles in small glass bowls flickering on each table; and this jazz trio playing this soft melody off in the corner. It is the way jazz should be. Listen to this piece from their Out There album and it is a totally different feel - just as good but very different.

What size Is this double bass?
I just can't stand this trio, in a good way. The knowledge, accuracy, swing, creativity, feeling and finesse of the three of them makes me mad... and i little bit sad i'll never reach them.
I'm a bassist, so obviously I'm tuned in on McBride....but I'm also a piano technician....so I notice the out of tune piano...and to me, in this sense, is....just....jazz. Christian Sands is masterful at controlling that Yami-upright...and Ulysses is at home....clearly...can't fake that perfection.
+Dan Cartlidge I am no musician but I, too, hear the piano - at first I thought it was just my old ears, hearing the slightly 'off' plunkiness. That Christian Sands is able to wrest so much beauty out of that thing is a marvel.

Piano is quite out of tune - but it doesn't matter if it's played by a master like this one
also the cymbals the drummer ulysses is using aren't so good either but hes made them sound like 100k
FrancescoGuardi - The piano has been tuned since this recording and sounds much better on more-recent recordings. Overall, it's about the best upright I've heard. Lovely tone !
