  • The world seems to be fascinated by African culture and design. So why isn't the fashion industry on the continent blowing Paris and New York out of the water? The issue appears to be as complex as the patterns of African prints. To help understand what investors are looking for in the industry CNBC Africa is joined by design giants David Tlale, JJ Schoeman and the Group Marketing Manager of African Fashion International Sizwe Ndimande.

    I believe that African Fashion should continue to maintain their quality along with their fundamental history within their rightful cultures and origin. In my opinion African Fashion is Luxurious attire with a rich history made with premium quality. Here in the west their is no such thing because most fashion item are set for mass productive while entailing low cost production exploiting other countries who under pay their workers. So in conclusion African fashion should not only be catered to their people but to those that are seeking to reconnect with their culture and ancestor which will educate and bring pride to the consumer and raise their awareness of their mother land. Africa doesn't need to compete with exploitation. Offer the rich quality your continent provides along with unmatched fashion design. Love and Peace!

      Africa should focus on their infrastructure serving each county, with each country owning their IPs for their designs. and then after each are aligned proceed to set up the continent in the global market with licensing opportunity for other countries to use and expand the African platforms.

      These are lies u tell urself to make urself fell better. African fashion sucks. Outside of Yoruba's and Senegalese. Most of you people are just imitating European fashion , thats why africas fashion is just dead.

    African fashion is not new, the African designers make outfits that are so western, too expensive for the ordinary African, our medias don't support it, the designers are influenced by the wrong group, we need things we can relate to, simple

      I think with the internet and globalization/colonization, more Africans are looking to redefine the African identity, however, i don't think the designers who look to the west will last long because the western aesthetic doesn't usually fit in with the African identity. The price points is also a good point you bring up. Its so expensive to product quality goods and still make profit, and most africans cant afford it. There needs to be a system overhaul if the industry is to grow to the point where it give the imported goods and secondhand clothing stiff competition.

      Cant say that when Africans are obsessed with western design. One of the consequences of colonialism :(

    The clothes are very expensive....no mass production, the ones that are cheap are poor quality

    This is very encouraging discussion and didn't realize South Africa despite being ahead of Kenya, still deals with the same structural issues we have for the industry. Hopefully we can all combine efforts and come up with the systems and solutions to make us more relevant to the rest of the world {Lorna from MIA MARA CREATIONS Kenya}

      I found this very surprising as well. It seems the challenges that the domestic fashion industry is having are "fundamental infrastructures" and once we solve this issue, the industry will definitely grow. We have the youngest population in the world, that in itself should show for something- Everybody needs clothes, right?

      @@KupsieInk over the years I've realized that there are things done in Kenya to benefit afew. Getting rid of mtumba would be the greatest game changer. Even with Covid and the mtumba ban the factories negotiated that with the government because they weren't getting the big international orders. The government are more interested in making us a manufacturing hub than developing the industry as a whole
      But we have very good skilled talent here

    • @KupsieInk

      @@lornathesewist I agree completely, and i think the problem is that the government is stuck in the stone age in terms of development. No one is looking for "KENYA uniform" and that's part of the reason Kenyans don't like buying locally produced clothing for fear of looking exactly like your neighbor in church (oh the horror😱) Manufacturing also doesn't account for the incredibly wide range of sizes in African populations, especially women.

    Because our value chain is so modeled after the western mode of operations, the systems are breaking down. Mass production doesn't work in Africa! This is a westernized idea of fashion that is really lost in translation when it comes to the African continent. Why do you think the second hand clothing industry is so successful? Other than the price points, people are attracted to the fact that it is very difficult to bump into someone wearing your outfit (the horror!) something you can't expect with chinese imports or store brands. Niche fashion is the future!

    Mr. Indoor Sunglasses hits the nail on the head at 7:53. Selling raw materials is a losing battle. Finished goods are much more valuable whether in terms of domestic or international trade. South Korea, Chile, Singapore and, of course, China are the standard-bearers of recent economic success. Economic protectionism to develop nascent domestic industry gets the ball rolling. Once domestic industry is internationally competitive, let foreign products in at high tariffs and send out the high value-added goods.

    This is so interesting listening to this now in 2019 because the interest in African fashion ihas only risen. I work with designers to help them to source such fabrics and artisans in Africa and my work is getting busier these days. African fashion is just fashion and it’s competing well with Paris nyc or london fashion today

    Actually under cover African fashion does heavily influence western designers when we talk about smock dresses colour pattern colour clashing and you go go on. Yes African brands are in infancy but let's us deceive ourselves that the west wants African Designers to thrive on their own last of all why get a white man to talk about African fashion he is not African just a White man who has African nationality
