- We witnessed Meshuggah at Tuska 2018 open air festival and interviewed Meshuggah's Mårten Hagström there. We talk with masters of "math metal" and djent, so let's see what he had to say to us.

This is what it looks like when intelligent people make music and when intelligent interviewers get to ask questions. Well done on all fronts.
Karol Kozak Thank you so much! We'll do our best. Cheers!
Karol Kozak meanwhile we got 6ix9ine topping the charts....fml music industry bs....real talent is completely tossed away nowadays.
that's consumers' music for masses yeah, meshuggah were never even dreaming about becoming this big if u look at the interview .. it's one of a million bands formed that made it and it is good so :)
I think the interviewer was kind of getting pretentious towards the end with the whole mathematics thing but Martin deflected it perfectly with the, "fat Swedes" comment.
Example, krhm...
"Do you use beard products and do you wash your beard daily?"
🤣
That's so hilarious!
😋
"We're not for the casual listeners going to the gym, drinking their smoothies, at five in the morning going in to crunch numbers at a bank."
Me: going in to work at 5 am to crunch numbers, drinking a smoothie, listening to Meshuggah
I regularly come back to this video just to read your comment lmao
Literally me LoL
Lol, Meshuggah on the headphones was a must when I worked on my exel spreadsheets at university before going to the gym later. Humming along, drinking my protein-shake.
Best way to crunch
Meshuggah is pretty awesome at the gym too I think you'll find, smoothies be damned!
Meshuggah is the ONLY thing I listen to when I go to the gym. Gives me +10 str, +10 con and +20 char.
I like your RPG thinking.
The only issue I have is that Meshuggah is most certainly a band you go to the gym to. I love doing cardio to polyrhythms.
unun septium Most confusing gym metal music.
or to lift, its gets you there
Oi I am a SocDem Gotta say I do my lifts with all kinds of music. Sometimes it's fierce black metal, sometimes traditional heavy and some occasions technical death metal. Hell, I've lifted even to Pink Floyd!
oh but they are really good because of the low notes and the very strong rythmical playing it is pretty good
No polyrhythms in meshuggahs music
Can I just say that’s exactly how I listen to Meshuggah? Drinking coffee, working out, nice joy rides along the beach, peaceful walks on nice days. Their stuff is the best kind of meditation
"It's not something you hum along.." I beg to differ, Marten.
The thing I love about meshuggah is their modesty, people all over the world are inspired by them, yet they're just like "yeah we are okay I guess"
...Agressive technical intelligent experimental progressive violent neckbreaking unexpected non-djent Metal..!!
A friend of mine has a band that was fondly labelled as "Kierkegaardian Space Prog" (they're Danish). :)
Drunk Marten is very insightful Marten
I met him at Ozzfest. He is as really a chill dude.
He isn’t even drunk
This is amazing. I just saw Meshuggah in Bethlehem, PA in December 2023 and I never thought I'd get a chance to see them live... For me listening to Meshuggah is like staring into the abyss and loving it. I love their unique fingerprint. Hearing Marten speak on it is really fun and inspiring. Cements my love even deeper.
Meshuggah makes all other metal sound like easy listening
Daniel Emmanuel Yes mate, everything sounds gay after their stuff.
that's almost a problem with them. after meshuggah I sometimes struggle to listen to some other bands that I loved before. its actually hard now...poor me I guess
@@SaleTheBlock try ULCERATE and say that AGAIN!!
Or carbomb? Hehe
ah the post Meshuggah effect
Mårten's state: Transformation into Santa Claus in progress! Great interview (not so hard with such a nice interviewee)!
Attila Gyukics Thank you!
Crystal Meth Santa Claus
I have to say -
I wake up at 4:30 AM to go to the gym multiple times per week listening to Meshuggah, & I work in financial services crunching numbers to Meshuggah. I also enjoy the occasional smoothie :P I do connect with their music on a different level than a casual listener bc I can hum along after learning the drums/music
Good point! You sound like one of my good friends who also goes to the gym around 5 AM and he's the type who could just listen to Chaosphere or something and work out. Well, I could also do that with Meshuggah, but more likely 10 PM than 5 AM :)
Omg I read your words "hum along" at the same time I heard him say it! Synchronicity!!!
I was literally drinking a smoothie listening to this... after doing yoga haha ON MY WAY TO CRUNCH NUMBERS AS A DATA SCIENTIST.
@@RautaMetal im doing it at 5 today.
Wow, probably the first decent interview I've seen on youtube. Good job
Thank you!
Marten and Tomas seem like such cool dudes. Meshuggah is one of the greatest bands ever.
God I love meshuggah.I'm waiting for Frederik to come back.Marten rules.
Guess whose back
@@yujonpradhananga9999 Yes Yujon! So fucking happy, great news AND they're in the studio.
Great interview. Meshuggah is life. Marten is dope.
Thanks!
Awesome interview! I have to admit that I've never been a big Meshuggah fan but these guys are legends in their own right for sure. He seems like a very chill and down to earth man.
Thank you! Well, me neither really, but much respect to these guys for creating a genre of their own and doing their unique stuff all the way more than 30 years.
They are very down to Earth for guys out of this world.
I had the pleasure of speaking at length with Mårten and Tomas after their show in Silver Spring, MD in the spring of 2012. Very down to earth. I had to go get them to come talk to us, because they had no clue we were all standing there waiting to talk to them. A memory I’ll cherish forever. AND I got a couple of pics with Mårten and Tomas. 🤘🏼
Mårten, I’m pleased to correct you. Your music IS enjoyed by smoothie-drinking number-crunchers. I’m neither of those, but I’m a Louisiana native, cowboy-lookin, bass playin, hammer swingin, plant-workin safety man who LOVES some Meshuggah. Looking to see them live for the 6th time. The sooner the better.
My recent listen to Meshuggah moment was while vacuum cleaning my house. I can even dance to it!
Yes, we need more frutile bread machine, please.
sonofthem2 lol its the sequel
marten seems like the coolest guy ever. i would love to hang out and have beers with him. if that were ever to happen, that would probably be the best day of my life
I remember being in 7th grade in 97 and ordering Contradictions Collapse. Started there and never looked back. Favorite band to this day. Great interview.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Can relate. The first Meshuggah album I got was Destroy Erase Improve in 98. One of my favorite bands to this day \m/
I listen to Meshuggah at 5 am on my way to school every morning!
Tis the perfect way to prepare for a day full of unending bullshit lol. I wish I knew about Meshuggah when I was still in High-School. I probably wouldn't have gotten in fights half as much as I did.
this guy is truly, an OG.
10:11 classic. Long live the Meshuggah!!! Love from Texas
Man I was planning to see then with Tool when they came to Houston area... and totally forgot to buy the tickets.. prob the biggest mistake of my life
Humberto Flores was that early 2000s? I've seen both separately in Houston. Absolute masters.
H town hold it dine
Max Vasquez lol yezzir
These guys will go down in history as total innovators in prog. IMHO.
Guys , please watch them live ! I watched them live at Rock am Ring 2018 and i was really amazed not just by their playing but also by their sound. Its freakin heavy!
They came to India twice, but I didn't even know what they were back then. :'(
Their live sound is the most amazing thing ever. I couldn’t believe how good it sounded, I thought the albums sounded good, but man…. Those live guitars just vibrate your whole body in the best ways
I hope that they will never stop tossing ideas at each other. , because I will never have enough of Meshuggah's albums. The greatest metal band of all time, all my other idols in musici are fans of this band.
when "I" came out it changed music for me.
man congrats on comming out
Marten is such a legend and such a funny guy
NOTHING topped it off for me as far as extended range.
Been playing 7/8 strings for years now.
Love em.
I dont know about anyone else but i cant have a good day in the gym WITHOUT listening to meshuggah
What a guy! Inspiration overload.
marten seems like a down to earth djentleman
Hah that wordplay. Yeah, he is that.
It's funny how he says Meshuggah's music isn't for casual listening, crunching numbers, and drinking smoothies when lately I put them on when I wash and twist my hair lmaoooo
axeslinger94 Well, of course there are exceptions to every rule :)
I listen to meshuggah every day, it’s perfect for all occasions. I literally cannot stop listening to them. Just saw them in Orlando two days ago.
You guys are musical Gods...scientists who split atoms of time in precise manner and leave 64 yr olds like me in complete awe. Been following you guys since the mid-90`s & you improve like fine wine.
once he gets talking his accent almost completely goes away
Watch an interview with Tomas. His accent is almost nonexistent.
One of my all time favorite acts of any musical genre. Awesome interview Rauta!
Colin Spliff Thanks!
I honestly thought Periphery's Misha Monsoor created the term "djent." That said, yes, I accept Meshuggah as being called "math metal," not "mathcore" (math rock being prog+jazz); and yes, I love djent. Oversaturated online, sure, but still fun to listent to those 8-string notes. Brings some groove and funk to the insane madness.
He's said to have accidentally popularized it, but not coined it (as Marten confirms)
OK, it's not music for 'casual listening going to the gym', but it definitely IS music for going to the gym!
They'll never die.
And I want to be buried with their merch with me in my casket
Greatest band ever. It's always the crazy ones that are on the cutting edge taking it to a new level. We love you Meshuggah. Thank you for your brilliance and staying true a humble to your art. The creative evernewing spark is the infinite source fountain of endless music to be born, just like life each the same but infinitely different. I dropped all covers crap many years ago and started playing PURELY in the pursuit of chasing that creative cutting edge of only playing something we had never jammed before - and we recorded it on-the-fly to capture the magic as it happened. I have meshuggah to thank for this - they taught me how that EVERYTHING is changeable and it does't have to be ANYTHING unless you make it to be. It's the ultimate exploration of self and euphoria shared with your musical partners. Feel free to enjoy
I only wish the band would read this.
Great question, great interview and also good production and filming!
Call The Mothership Thank you a lot!
This was another enjoyable interview. It flows similarly to a conversation, various subjects come up and with ease.
With the 8 strings I dunno, I've only tried them in store but like he said, 6 to 7 isn't much change but 8 it's a big change. Although it didn't appeal to me, nonetheless there's a learning curve and different approach which I can respect. I also assumed "djent" was just some weird internet/youtube joke or meme that caught on with skateboarding kids into metalcore which is basically Blink182 with 7/8 string dbl bass, growl-shouting.
J. Fomoiri Thanks!
Even though I knew djent prior to this one, I didn't consider it as a genre until like last year or something. For a long time I took it as a slang word for certain "hipster" metal.
Ehkä paras Meshuggah haastattelu jonka olen nähnyt. Loistavia kysymyksiä ja enkun ääntäminen priimaa. Suuret kiitokset! 🤘🏼
Kiitos!
Not only do they produce unearthly heavy music, they are cool down to earth people too
These are great questions!
Thank you!
What is your own definition? " I don't care if it's progressive, I care that it's heavy". It's not music for casual listeners. I like how Marten explains Meshugah's music.
One of the coolest guys/guitarists in one of the most badass amazing bands ever. Love listening to interviews with Marten, would be great to meet him and learn from him someday.
The whole "gym, crunch numbers, smoothy" comment I think applies more to Marten not thinking yuppies like their music but actually a lot of yuppies do like Meshuggah, which isn't a bad thing but I am glad Meshuggah isn't going out of their way to make yuppie music.
Just so you all know a lot of modern djent bands are yuppie music.
Thanks for the info! Might be a cultural thing, too, because I think Meshuggah over here in is mostly listened to death metal heads and others of that sort. I might be wrong of couse!
Someone got beat up by a yuppie
I like how Mårten is well aware of all that Djent meme and just deal with it joking even, easy and chill.
Most hips-djentlemen would play a 4-strings down tunning concept guitar, he need to make a signature of that shit :v.
Wrong Marten, Meshuggah is ABSOLUTELY appropriate for gym workouts
We meshuggah fans need to see..... Frederick thordendal do an interview.
i drink my smoothie on the way to work in the morning blasting meshuggah haha
I love how Marten is like "we make some retarded music haha" and literally every djent band exists because of them. AND he's somewhat apologetic for accidentally creating a whole movement. Phenomenal.
Some proper Nordic mentality there.
I literally listen to them at 5am on my way to work, in the office, sipping coffee.
very friendly & honest, something not outsiders would expect from metal pioneers /,,/, ♥
hilarious and that's how a genre was born!!!! You see I told my mom being drunk leads to great ideas...
Not for going to the gym... uh-huh... okay Marten... whatever you say
Their music can replace steroids
here in florida ….I wake up and listen to yall with coffee and I hum and whistle meshuggah while working. and people will ask what the hell are you tying to play. they never pick the right band. but my wife and kids know
oh...i will hum, i listen in the gym and while i'm drinking my smoothies
That "God" is so down to earth...How refreshing!
Yeah, he's a cool guy.
Worth noting, Meshuggah have definitely been listened to by me at the gym whilst drinking an Americano at 5 am. Literally the only thing that gets me out of bed sometimes.
Nice!
They are the best!!!!!
Super awesome interwiev!
Voidwork Thanks!
"it's not music you hum along" me going TFF TFFF TFFF TrrrrrFFF singing the riffs of the songs while I casually brush my hair
"Not something you hum along to, not music for casual listeners going to the gym, drinking their smoothies..." OK, I'm not a gym bunny, nor do I drink smoothies, but if I did, I'd probably do it to Meshuggah at point.
I would love to hear meshuggahs version of ac dc and can’t wait for that 4/4 album.
Wonderful interview!
And about the gym thing: Meshuggah is my go-to band while working out 🤘🏻
Thanks!
I exclusively listen to Shuggah at the gym... and every other place too.
Dylan Allender yeah, ive gone for a run aswell with a meshuggah album playing. Why not?
08:45: "Now you've taken this screwed up fucked up music that nobody wants to listen to. And you've been hauling it all around the world for 30 years and people still give you the time of day."
Mårten working hard to promote the band as usual!
Scandinavian "self-irony".
I think it was really more a brutally honest comment on the usual first-time reaction - I just liked the total disregard for marketing-speech and mindset where one borders on simply begging to be liked. It is way too common and completely uninteresting so it made me happy to see that they haven't shut off yet! So ironically my comment was ironic in celebration of this! :)
Eske Knas Aye!
nice interview
scolio1978 Thanks!
I'll have my smoothie with some Meshuggah please.
Marten went from looking like my dad to looking like my grandfather in like 1 year.
That's what mathmetal can do to some.
Haha
This guy sounds so young, nice interview
Rlottt Thanks!
Great interview.
Thank you! In hindsight too short, but back then Rauta was so much smaller and we got only short time slots.
@@RautaMetal there can be greatness in short spurts.
TRRTA TRRTA TRRTA TRRTA TRRTA TRRTA got stuck in my head tho
MESHUGGAH for life.
I love how self deprecating and funny he is. For being an awesome musician he's not at all arrogant!
The best kind of artists are like this IMO.
For what Ive seen in most interviews, all meshuggah's members are pretty chilled and not at all arrogant, just more reasons to love this band
I want to have a buddy like Marten. Just seems like such a nice chill fun friend. I bet that has so much to do with the longevity of a band just being a decent person to be around and to be creative with.
Damn straight! These kind of ppl bring a smile to my face.
Yes.. Great interview.. Men and Metal.. People should work out to Meshugga
Vin Kalman Thanks, man.
Very nice interview 👍
Thanks!
I dunno.. I’m going to the gym and getting smoothies while absolutely blasting Future breed machine
I used to dislike Meshuggah. I didn't "get it" and was not a fan of the strange rhythmic play. Now, I even have an 8-string M80M (Mårten's signature) and create my own shit and listen to them for inspiration.
Brilliant Mister Jerry!
Ty!
Well Marten, I work at an office, crushing numbers and listen to your music while doing it :)
he laughs from the heart :-)
Mårten is wearing a t shirt of a swedish hiphop group called Sthlm inkasso - incredibly unexpected. (Rip Onda) These guys keep surprising me after all these years...
My favorite album by them is Catch 33, but they need to redo it w/ real drumming. I do believe the drumming was done on the drum machine
Meshuggah is EEM (Extreme Experimental Metal)
Confirmed, God has blessed Djent while he was drunk.
So humble about their music but its still fucking genius!
"something you don't hum along". Yeah. Well, sir, that's not true
There are always exceptions :-)
Hum along to it? Challenge accepted
LOVE this interview. Fuck you for making me feel good
Thanks!
Marten is just the coolest
Marten, I hate to be that guy but I exclusively listen to your music while working out or crunching numbers lol
come on bro Meshuggah is the reason I hit
PRs in the gym
