Thanks for sharing the video and the "chatting" makes it more of a real-feel & honest review. I was in the market for new woods last year and had a chance to try several options. I ended up with the Callaway XR's, 5W & 3W, for various options but i love the way feel, sound and more importantly how i can make shots that i never could before. I looked at a lot more expensive and popular models and leaned that i could not play them any better than the ones i purchased. After reviewing this video, it has me thinking of the new technology Callaway has implemented in their new clubs but not sure i can be sold something even the manufacture can't explain how it works.. lol

Strike Brah! I am no expert but when you see the shape of the back of the face it seems like the have engineered in thick parts and thin parts in waves to react to the face deforming in waves when the ball is hit. But wouldn't that reduce the size of the 'sweet spot' ? They have obviously been looking at the club head deforming hence 'Jailbreak' stopping the top and bottom of the club pushing apart at impact. Just an opinion. loving the vids. keep 'em coming.

Mark, 24:00 is exactly what Callaway have done using their super computer. They simulated hundreds of thousands of strikes all over the face and then the computer designed the face to do "as well as it could" for all of those strikes. The face isn't designed to give you the same results everywhere on the face; it's designed so that when you do mishit it (not every can hit center strike every time like you brah), your LOSSES are less than with a different club. They're making the bad hits better, but they can't make the bad hits as good as the good hits.

I bought my 3 wood about 4 or 5 years ago and haven't really tested one since. I've considered replacing it, but whereas I hit driver between 8 and 10 times a round, I probably hit 3 wood twice. Most people don't play off the blacks on 7,000 yards like you guys.

Interesting talk about the club tech. When you think about it, why does the clubs have different faces? Why does one have groves and the other club has the new flashy face? Should not both the clubs have the new flashy face if the tech is so good? And if both the clubs have the flashy tech behind the face, surely the groves have to alter the shot somehow? But in the end of that day, I don't really care. As long as it looks good behind the ball and I hit it straight I'm happy.

Last three wood I bought was Taylormade RBZ Stage 2. I’m somewhat inconsistent with it, but sometimes hit it fairly well. I’m looking at replacing it with one of these to hopefully pick up a few yards, since I’m not as young as I used to be! I’m thinking the sub might be for me, since I tend to spin everything a bit too much. Good video.

If I can attempt to explain. Say you know a common average speed of an ostrich running. That's just average based on lots of observation. Now say you said I'm building the perfect ostrich. I know the ones with 3.5 inch claws combined with 5 ft legs runs slightly better than average. More observation means you can make assumptions. Now imagine you have so many observations of toe strikes, top strikes, close to heal strikes and you let the "super computer " choose the best thickness for every square centimeter of the face... you get that mad pattern. (Varied thickness) and then you put that in a human hand and it works. Boom AI = maths on shit loads data. Just AI sounds good. "This driver has simple maths done so many times it made some gains" won't sell drivers. Love the channel. Keep up the great work 👍

The tech discussion reminds me of a comment I heard about fishing lures. Some lures are meant to catch fish, others are meant to catch fisherman. I think that a lot of the tech claims are simply designed to increase sales. They have to find some way to convince you that their new club is better than your old club. While there have certainly been massive improvements in club technology over the last 20 years, it makes you wonder why all of a sudden from one year to the next a club that looks essentially the same as last year is supposed to be much better. I’m actually with Mark on this one. If you can’t explain to me in a simple fashion why it’s better, I think it’s just marketing.

As a guess, I reckon the face works through something to do with the different oscillations depending on where the strike location is? Surely the face will oscillate differently closer to the edge compared to the centre and the unusually shaped inside of the face may be involved with minimising the effects of this. Perhaps it dampens the oscillations of the mishit to keep spin off? Just a guess, I'm a biochemist not a physicist!

I tested a new 3 wood this past year as a replacement for an old Cobra Baffler Rail F that'd been in my bag since 2011. I ended up finding a mint example of my old one and have gone back to it. New one didn't fly any farther, wasn't any more forgiving. Just not sure there's been much innovation in the fairway wood category for quite some time.

Quick explanation about the face. Instead of using a gradual change in materials thickness to push CT to regulation limits like an engineer (person) would do they allowed a computer to engineer it. Not constrained by a person's, "I don't want to set up all the equations in my software", an AI will use lattice or wave patterns to expand ball speed across the face while keeping it in spec. This expansion is likely to be trivial in a fairway wood. Okay, not so quick. It is like a trampoline. A person, "yeah, uniform mat, same springs all around. Done, easy". An AI will churn out all the maths to maximize the efficiency across the whole mat by changing thickness and elastic properties of the mat. The mat may have thicker, less elastic, areas and thin, more elastic, areas. If you ask the question, "why is this part thicker"? The answer is that modeling shows it increases energy efficiency. PGA/R&A: "The Characteristic Time of the clubhead shall not be greater than 239 µs. A maximum test tolerance of 18 µs is associated with this test."

What’s then the manafacturing tolarance from one club to another? Can this have an impact on the quality of the product, it’s performance and how do you control manufacturing mistakes and variances? I don’t believe that hype unless I tried it, it’s longer and reduces dispersion.

    • @jamesl5352
      @jamesl5352 5 лет назад

@@bernddreilich7100 The engineers include the manufacturing tolerances during integrated product development (IPD). Basically, you tell the computer what your manufacturing tolerances are and the computer won't develop a design the requires tighter tolerances than can be manufactured. I would expect the PGA/R&A to approve manufactured models that fall within their 18 µs tolerance. I still don't see what all the fuss is about. I expect these developments to be trivial, at best.

The face tech works like this: designers look at each point on the face and calculate the rebound. the face thickness is varied through the entire stretch of the face to optimize each of those points. The challenge, as you analyze one point and change the thickness of the face to optimize rebound speed for that point, that change can accidentally change every other point on the face as well. So you then need to go back and recalculate the rebound for every other point again when you make a change to optimize the particular spot you are analyzing (because you don’t want to slow down other points). You have to do these calculations over and over again, looking at a point, changing face thickness, then determining the unintended consequence to other points. You run this process over and over until you have a face thickness profile that optimizes every point as much as possible. The AI marketing is a sales term for the design process doing these repetitive calculations and changes until the face is optimized as much as possible for every point (not every point can achieve ideal rebound, so there is an “ideal” final balanced solution to get the most possible, based upon the engineering goals). Since this is such a iterative calculation process, a large computer helps do them. In the past, club designers would likely pick out say 10 specific points and do the calculations like this repetitively for those 10 points as they change face profiles. But since we now have faster computers, they can select 100 points on the face, or 1000 points on the face and let the computer vary thickness and re-run the calculations. If you allow the computer to alter the face design, then run the calculations, stopping when you reach an “optimal” thickness profile, the result is an “artificially intelligent” designed face.

Star Wars?? When I was a kid, the Disney movies I went to see in the theatre were "The Boatnicks" and "Now You See Him, Now You Don't."

Will lower spin fairway woods & drivers help or hinder higher handicappers, who more often don't find the centre of the face? Is low spin just about straight strikes or does it also reduce side spin and help keep the ball flight straighter?

The original Tron back in the early 80's great film, question, how did the Callaway R&D team manage to launch these clubs if there sales teams don't understand how they work! Great testing 👍

Nice Video ! 3 wood is a hard club to strike off the deck for most golfers! Mark do see if you can find out why it works mate?

Mark, I'm afraid to even consider "recent" clubs that have "face tech" like this because like you said, if I don't totally get it, how do I know it doesn't potentially hurt my game. So, is it reasonable to avoid these clubs or do I need to just trust it?

The original Tron was great. I didn't mind the second. Also, the 2nd one was not a remake, it was a continuation of the original.

Whoops - and a soft landing. Loft is your friend yet I don't recall you reviewing a 7 wood!
