    I do this for a living and I would not recommend the oscillating tool with a rasp or even diamond blade. At least not for 1/16" grout lines (which are shown in the video). It will take the grout out yes, but it will also damage the bevel in the edges of the tile which will make it hard to look 'new' again. For 1/16" grout lines, I just use a utility knife and gouge it all out. It takes a while to do a whole enclosure, but it doesn't damage the tiles. After that I scrub the all the tile with CLR or something and give it a good wash/rinse because you don't want to be regrouting over scum.

    • @GreatWhiteNiko
      @GreatWhiteNiko 7 лет назад +3

      Good advice but shitty apartment complexes could care less about the damage on the tile. It is either cheap regrouting (if they can get someone to do it) or tile resurfacing. The resurfacing is normally done over mold, no real cleanup, just wipe with Lacquer Thinner to remove oils/scum off the tile faces That is what you get for cheap - pure shit.
      Other than that what you describe (utility knife) may seem easy to you. Trust me - a DIY guy will spill his guts removing grout. It is hard work.
      The oscilating tool makes such loud noise that a DIY guy will wish he paid an illegal worker to do that job. But people are cheap, they do all kinds of ridiculous things.
      That line of work is both nasty and back breaking. No other way to look at it. Pay someone to do it, it's worth it.

      CLR! Thanks, I totally forgot about CLR! You're definitely right about the utility knife. I'm right in the middle of grout removal on 4" square tile and couldn't use my Dremel or oscillating tool because they were scratching up the tile. I'm using four hand tools: a utility knife, a chisel, a grout saw, and an old kitchen knife meant for deboning chicken or something. I had an old neighbor guy sharpen the hell out of the knife and it's working great.
      Can I ask what kind of grout you'd use? I went out and got Laticrete and also have some unsanded grout in a plastic bag from Lowe's.

    You absolutely have to use a respirator mask. Dust from old grout contains silica and is carcinogenic. It's an absolute must. Great video.

      100% correct. Just went through OSHA 10 for the 3rd time in my career and they now stress silica dust hazards. What goes in to your lungs doesn't come out people need to understand this. Aside from the cancer risk you could end up with COPD from breathing in particulates and or chemicals.

    Hey Seth - basically had to do the same thing twice for my duplex rental property. Problem I ran into was that the tiles were spaced at 1/16 or less b/c back in the 50's they didn't have tile spacers. I had to use a utility knife for most of it. There were sections I could use a multi-tool with the diamond grit blade and it worked great as you demonstrated. I had to wear ear muffs though because of how loud it was, and I wore goggles and drywall mask

      Hahahahaha................tell me about it. I'm currently re grouting the shower and thought great, I'll just use the multi-tool. Pft, the spacing is a major issue so I have ended up using a utility knife and even that is hard to use in some sections.

      Clearly you have never re-grouted a bathroom, otherwise you would know this is what you have to deal with. Considering the condition of the bathroom, he did a stellar job. Remember this is a rental. It never pays in the long term to replace an entire bathroom. Repairs are deductible, a new bathroom must be depreciated over 27.5 years. You are obviously an idiot who has never even picked up a screw driver before. If you don't have anything intelligent to say, then shut up

    I have the same tile in pink and the exact same faucets! I want to rip it all out and put in modern stuff, like a Kerdy system and a glass door, etc but I'm being told to wait until around Xmas when plumbers and tile guys might have time available. What that really means is, "Wait until the time when plumbers and tile guys need to buy presents but nobody's hiring them to redo their bathroom because it's the holidays." So for now I'm tasked with removing grout and regrouting old 4" shower tile. Talk about polishing a turd!

    A Dremel with a grout bit works well in the corners and tricky bits around the rack attachments. I also cannot emphasize how important it is to wear a mask while doing this. Grout dust + moist lungs = new grout in your lungs... not too mention whatever nasty black stuff that was in the joints.

    Cut caulk with a utility knife then remove. Also remove the caulk using a carbide hand tool found in the tile section of the store. Use the same tool (has a triangular carbide piece) to scrape the grout. Way easier than the noisy vibrating tool + the hand tool gets in every corner.

    That tool is great, I only use it on projects that a Durarock scoring knife won't clear the grout. That knife will also get into the corners as well. I have one that is two headed and also a single head that gets into the corners well. Sometimes use the triangle shaped grout tool or the hand grout saw. Using the scoring knife does not make the dust that the oscillator saw does. It chips the grout out and much deeper than the oscillator. Easily vacuumed up. Did anyone notice the door to the next room was open when he is clearing the grout from the lines? The oscillator tool makes massive amounts of dust. Clear the room of any personal items, turn on the ceiling fan, close the door and tape it sealed, and cover the AC/ Heat vent to lessen blowing dust.
    Who uses a wood scrapper on a brittle porcelain tub? Razor blades, dental picks and alcohol work great at removing caulk. I didn't see where Microban was injected into caulk lines to kill mold.
    No protection on tub. I throw several towels in the tub and occasionally shake them out and vacuum residues. Can create quite a problem if something wrong goes down the drain. Why is there a tub full of dirty water? Rinse the new grout out of a bucket and pour residue in the toilet, be sure to flush a few times.
    This is more of a video on how NOT to re-grout.

    • @Valdesgreen
      @Valdesgreen 10 лет назад

      Randy, what about using the Dudrarock scoring knife to remove some of the top layer of the old grout (dirty kitchen floor tiles I'm trying to clean) so I can regrout. Will the new grout stick to the amount of grout left of the old grout? Your posting made here made sense by the way.

      for cleaning, use lemon juice, and a baking soda/water paste with a rigid brush with synthetic bristles. U need to remove at least half the depth of the old grout, use a razor knife along edges so u don't have to get very close with the electric/battery tools. If you're removing grout because of mold, u only need to remove the grout that the mold has set into.

    Add your work hours up and then calculate the time you could have saved by Re-tiling, straight over the top of the existing tiles, yes, they will stick even without having to cut or scrape the original tiles to form a base for them, just wipe down with a cheap spirit before tiling.
    I have done this hundreds of times and even having to remove say the tiles on the tap side due to the taps being up against the wall, is still a quicker and better finish, or think about changing the taps to ones that come away from the wall.
    TOP TIP 1 Never use small tiles when tiling, when you come back in say a years time it makes it so much easier to clean the tiles with a small brush and some STRONG Bleach, cheap bleach is not strong bleach, it is cheap bleach in water.
    TOP TIP 2 Always leave your grout just below the surface, this allows for a clean up and a re-grout in a year or so after your filthy Tennats or Flat mates have moved on.
    TOP TIP 3 FACT - Ventilation stops Mould, but the extractor Fan or Fans in a large bathroom will need to be running for at least 10mins after someone has finished in there, remember, opening a window after showing/bathing causes damp mould, it does not take it away! which is what you would think.

    • @joshgrossman7444
      @joshgrossman7444 10 лет назад +3

      Well I wouldn't say rich, I'd say they are stupid. People see a tile that fell off they scream "we need a new bathroom!!!" People fail to realize tiles can be re-attached, tiles can be re-tiled, etc. 1950's bathrooms can theoretically last forever if they are re-grouted every 15-20 years (more often for rentals). the thinset they used back then is superior to even the best thinset today.
      I still have 1950's bathrooms in my rental units, all re-habbed by me which includes re-grouting and re-attaching tiles. It's a rental, why would I rip everything out and re-tile. That adds 4-7 days to the renovation which is an extra 4 days that the apartment isn't being rented out. Combined with the fact there are other things he probably had to do in the apartment to get it ready to be rented.
      The 1950's bathrooms I have in my rentals look brand new with brand new bright white grout, triple sealed for for minimal maintenance.

      Yes, first world problems.
      It seems today most people ask "who can we get to do that"? Instead of "how can "I" get this done"?
      The other day I heard a 20 something dude discussing purchasing a $5000.00 mattress!!!!!!
      Have we become that soft?
      I guess if people are spending 5 grand on a mattress they will want brand new tile, maybe I should market tile at $200.00 an inch and it will become the new must have.
      Then an invisible set of clothes.

      jackchorn$5000 for a mattress, omg. That's spending $2500 for you and your wife for something you only spend 7-8 hours a day there. And break that down to 10 years that would be $.68 a night for each of you, wow. And just to get a better sleep and wake up every morning without your back hurting and get better sleep that would make you more productive. Better save your $.68 a day and be tired and in pain.

    • @jackchorn
      @jackchorn 10 лет назад

      Really.
      Is that how you justify it?
      Lets now add up the cost for your car, rising food expenses, school, energy, water, insurance on and on.
      The majority of americans have less then 10,000 dollars in savings.
      Where is the reality? But I guess supporting a lifestyle you can't afford with debt is the new normal.
      I sleep just fine because I live simply and with in my means.
      Maybe if you need sleeping pills and a super mattress to get a good nights rest then there are other issues in your life beyond a piece of furniture.

    I'm wondering how much harder it would be to just put up new tile...even if it meant putting up new (bathroom type) drywall? People would be much more inclined to rent a place with a modern style bathtub/bathroom, and it would increase the resale value of the house. This is assuming you could find nice tiles that aren't super expensive. Cutting tiles for the edges isn't too difficult, even with a cheapo tile saw.
    Going the removal route, I could see the tiles getting scratched up quite a bit if you're not Super Careful removing the old grout, and all that time+effort wouldn't add up to a final result worth the effort. Just wondering-

    Using a chisel to remove hard to remove grout? that's stupidity (blood on the tiles) - get an electric engraver with replaceable tips. It will get right into a corner. I think Dremel has a grout removal tool that will do, too (but a lot more expensive)

  • @hopefullyhelpful1

    Please don't pay attention to this video, you never use a chisel on grout joints using a narrower grout removing tool or using a utility knife and a lot of elbow grease is the proper way to do it. Using a chisel can lead to chipping your tiles, same goes for using electric multitool if you're not careful.

    • @joshgrossman7444
      @joshgrossman7444 10 лет назад +2

      Why? It's a rental bathroom. All it needs is a re-grouting and for the old tiles to be re-attached. I've rehabbed numerous 1950's bathrooms the same way he did except I had to use a utility knife for a lot of them since the tiles were spaced too close together. The tiles at the bottom along the tub are always the ones that fall off due to moisture and water damage. Repairing is easy - remove loose debris and re-attach. Then re-grout. It would take him a day to dig out the grout, and re-grout. Re-tiling the entire shower surround would take at least 3 days minimum.

      Josh Grossman It seems like those 1950's homes and buildings are a lot better than the ones built today, with the exception of lead paint and asbestos. The newer constructed homes and apartment buildings seem to require heavy maintenance after just 5 years or so.

Within months, the scratches will fill with that black mold your originally trying to get rid off but this time, NO FIX...

    Personally I would have retiled over the existing tile, or taken them out first, to start over, since the tiles and grout are in such poor condition with some already coming out due to water getting through to the backside. All the best- Michael

      Journey Perry I do my own renovations and I had to do the same thing he did - twice actually for two different bathrooms. Problem was, the tiles from the 1950's were spaced too close together so I had to use a utility knife. He actually had it easy being able to fit a carbide/diamond grit blade in there. I had the same problem with the loose tiles around the tub, only I had to re-attach 8 of them. All in all re-attaching all of the loose tiles and re-grouting took 3 days and $35 in materials. They were rentals so why gut and put in new bathrooms?

    • @journeyperry4932
      @journeyperry4932 10 лет назад

      I agree, why gut the bathrooms? If you run into having super tight joints again, I would spend a few bucks, buy a Dremel and the diamond wheel that cuts tile to grind the joints...this will make your life easier and will cut your time in half.

      Journey Perry Doesn't work well with how thin those blades are. Cutting ceramic is one thing - grout is a form of cement and those thin rotary tool disc don't last long against that type of material. It's also difficult to get deep enough down due to the small diameter of the disc even if using a right angle adapter. The utility knife and a carbide triangle scraper is the best you can do if you don't want to chip the tile.
      Removing recent re-grouts is easy. It's the old heavily sanded grout that was a B***** to remove.

      Clearly you don't know what's involved with re-habbing a 1950's rental bathroom. This is common stuff that you will come across. There is no easy way to re-grout a bathroom. He did what he was asked to do. Considering the project at hand, he did a stellar job by getting all of the grout out. Many just grout on top of grout
