Yes, that is the version to watch. Not only is she singing, but she is dancing strenuously at the same time. I would suggest that the only difference between Tina at that age and 2009 Tina is that she doesn't dance as wildly for this video. I would also suggest that the techniques she used to enable her to dance and sing at the same time are at work in this video; she has continued to sing pretty much the same way but has reduced her insane level of physicality as she got older.
Even in her 40s and 60s she slays Proud Mary! Janis Joplin and Tina Turner are my favorite vocalists from 60s-80s. RIP, Queen of Rock ❤🕊

We Don't Need Another Hero is another epic song of hers. And she rocked the screen in Mad Max Thunderdome! She was such an amazing person, given what life handed her early on. She is asperational on so many levels. She is deeply missed, but I am so glad she was with us!

I was blessed to have seen her live a couple of times. Her magic? She SAW every single person in the arena. She loved us. She gave us her ALL every show. We were in her living room, getting a personal show. Her life was so HARD, her final days were HARD. I wish there was more happy days in her life. I adored her.

What I tell people is always "The deepest regret comes from what we don't do or say as it is left undone." I had two tickets to see Tina Turner around 1983 at a club that I was an official photographer at. It was a dark and stormy day, so I gave the tickets away. I was thinking of staying home near the fire with a girlfriend at the time. The couple that went came back and told me that Tina Turner was the most incredible performer they had ever gotten to see up close and personal. She looks around the room as she sings, and engages each and every person like "I'm going to mke you feel these words!" That is what manyhave told me ... shortly after that show, Private Dancer hit the radio airwaves and Tina filled stadiums! I'd started going to concerts back in 1978, and I've been to thousands of of shows .. but that night is one that I regret missing for the rest of my life. I would have gotten great up close pictures and likely have met her too. Okay, smaking myself back to reality as I've got to consider all the concerts and shows I have been too ... we can't go to all of them. I am glad that you were able to have seen her in concert and that you felt her see you. She was simply the best!

Tina has an incredible story/history. She talks about her ability to project like she does coming from working in the cotton field. The only way they could communicate with each other while out working the fields was to yell. Be really loud. There are dozens of interesting videos breaking down and analyzing her voice and why it is so unique. She took this somewhat deep raspy voice created from what was probably damaged vocal cords and became a superstar. She also has amazing recordings teaching Buddist chanting. She was an incredible human being. She was a survivor.
Her chanting was really something else. Truly full of light. Glad she was here.
Early in her career she once had bronchitis, then pneumonia, then tuberculosis and a collapsed right lung! A survivor, indeed!
'Field holler'
I had the privilege of working one of her concerts at the A.C.C and she blew me away. I had always been a fan, but working in concert venues you learn fast that most singers do NOT sound the same live. Some also don't have the personality live that they try to portray on an album. With Tina you get what you see, she is as vivacious and energetic live as she was in videos. The energy in the place and the way she interacted with her audience was amazing. So happy I got to work her concert, definitely one of my favourite concerts of the hundreds I've worked. (top 5 )

The performance of that song back then, she was at the absolute top of her game, and he was an up and coming star. And they had a really awesome chemistry onstage together! Few people age as well as Tina Turner. She definitely aged like a fine wine. She's in her 70's and flirting so well with that crowd.
OMG, you must watch the younger Tina doing Proud Mary when she was still with Ike. It's amazing! One if their later tunes was Mountain High, River Low which is also fantastic. Phil Spector produced it and used his "wall of sound" technique which was probably a mistake, though.

I remember when she released the Private Dancer album in 1984 which launched her comeback. I was 12 at the time with no say in my daily activities so my mother dragged me kicking and screaming to a Tina Turner concert. After a couple songs I was all in, she is an amazing performer. Seeing her perform Proud Mary live is still a highlight memory for me. As to the legs, she has always been famous for her legs and has never hid them. Another great reaction thank you.
Tina Turners vocals were so raspy/raw but soooo smooth. I was fortunate to see her farewell tour in person back in the day in 2000 or 2001 her voice was still killing it as the vocals as well as her dancing skills.... you also should do a live Proud Mary of hers as well...
It was nice to hear your comments on vocal aging. I’ve noticed that with performers such as Willy Nelson and the late Tony Bennett. They both adapted their phrasing and technique to still produce great musical performances. Glad you referenced that!😊

I saw Tina in 1998 and to this day I think it’s the best concert I’ve been to. She always gave so much on stage and the audience gave right back. This was one special lady. ❤

As you're doing a great run of rocking ladies with huge voices, I would really love to hear your analysis of one of Joan Armatrading's hits. Not just the big hit 'Love and Affection', but 'The Weakness in Me' (which tears a hole in anyone who's been through what she's singing about), or 'Down to Zero', probably one of her most complicated songs. Please give this underrated vocal powerhouse some love. Lots of live videos available from her prime in the late 70's / early 80's, but she's still touring today...
Saw Tina at Wembley in the 90's, and her energy level was incredible, I swear her backing dancers were having trouble keeping up with her, and they were considerably younger, all this while still singing brilliantly.

Another good live track to do is "Proud Mary" by 'Ike and Tina Turner', it's from 1970, off the album "Workin' Together", someone uploaded a version which they called (incorrectly) "Rolling on The River".

Man, she really was some singer, performer and woman. She was just a queen in her own way. And I say, as long as you can get up there and do it, and lay down great takes in the studio, then go right ahead. She worked that stage with her own brand of fine magic.

My dad saw Tina live back in the 60s and said it was the greatest performance he ever saw and still is to this day. He said her singing and dancing were unrivaled.

I love seeing a crowd who are geniunely happy to see the act. All the cuts to the crowd show someone bopping along. It's something that you can't get from an audio recording, no matter how good the singer.

I was little when I saw her for the first time on Ed Sullivan show singing proud Mary, and she has been one of the people that I’ve admired all my life. She had a hard life at the start, but she was blessed at the end with a beautiful career and admires of what we call fans. She will be missed. RIP 🫶🏻💕❤️💕🤠
She spent a life on stage and her craft is unmatched..... I watched a small dance routine from her and without error she started by dropping her mic stand out of view and seamlessly lifted and locked it back when she started singing. so much detail leading to absolute perfection....oh and the voice of course!

Tina and her legs were quite well known. She duetted with Rod Stewart on Hot Legs. Very befitting. She was a beautiful, classy lady who could bring it on stage!
Chrissy Amphlett was a goddess of Australian music, and an absolute icon. In my opinion very underrated, and was taken from us way too early in life from Breast Cancer. In fact, their song "I Touch Myself" was used in a very success ad campaign in Australia to create awareness for women to check themselves for lumps, so it's a song that has saved countless lives.
You owe it to yourself to review her.
One of the best live duets Tina ever did was with Elton John on his song "The Bitch Is Back". The joy they had in performing it together not only flowed through the venue, but also into video footage to be shared by everyone else in the world. There will never ever be another woman or artist like Tina. She was a force of nature that we are all blessed to have her story and music to always remember and respect her forever.

I always loved the way Tina left that pitch bend just a little bit flat at the top on the word "love" whenever she sang "What's *love* got to do with it." It gave that phrase a bluesy kind of tone and an edge of pain that always tugged at my heart. Just one of many aspects of that song that I loved from the get-go. But I don't think there was any Tina Turner song that didn't just knock me to my knees.
She loved performing and that certainly drove her. But also, I think she had to be able to feel how much we all loved and admired her. She was a goddess.

I just discovered your channel and love it! I've always felt like singing was like speaking but with an extra layer of emotion that transcends speach alone.
I really feel that when I hear Liz Fraser from The Cocteau Twins. Especially on songs like "Rilkean Heart" where she does this sort of melodic crescendo that feels like some majestic bird spreading it's wings and soars ever higher into the clouds. Gives me goosebumps ever time I hear it.

Tina Turners (RIP, GNU) music is so good, Australian NRL (one of the footballs) has been working with her in various ad campaigns, since 1989. Simply the Best.
She was always dynamic and always had a deep, raspy voice. Over the years I never noticed any real change in the quality of her vocals. The quality of her singing, and perhaps some of the nuance may have grown overtime. But her vocal quality as a contralto never changed. Yes, she is one of the GOATs!!! ❤❤❤

Absolute legend, this lady. Fun fact, you can also hear her and the Ikettes do backing vocals throughout Frank Zappa's Overnite Sensation and Apostrophe (') albums. It took them several days to learn the very difficult middle section of "Montana", and when Tina brought Ike Turner into the studio to hear it, he said "What is this shit?!" and walked out, and later insisted Frank would not credit them on the album cover 😁
I am very grateful that you pointed out that age does not deteriorate singing, but changes it. Tina has found intelligent solutions to present the song familiarly and even sing important song passages powerfully despite the now smaller lung volume. This proves her ambition and greatness because she definitely had to practice it for a while.
Tina Turner was one of the classiest women in the performing arts (in my humble opinion)! To retain her ability to sing and perform well into her 70s was a tribute to her fortitude and determination to succeed, having survived the turmoil of her marriage to Ike and still surfaced with confidence and that ability to 'be'! I was there. The last of three times I saw her, all in comeback after Ike. She was magnificent. Powerful. Great sense of humor. One of the best performers I ever saw. Your comment that she has style is right on target. She gets it, she USED what she had. Saw Lena Horne on her last tour and MaryAnn Faithful a couple of times after her comeback too - there is something that is pure magic about older performers who totally GET style and what they have to work with. Tina Turner is an incredible performer. I remember seeing her onstage when it was over 100 degrees out...there were heat warnings and everything and she just pumped out a performance like it was nothing. She just gave it her all with sweat just flying off of her and she didn't give a damn. This was in the 90s.

Although she has endless Grammy awards, she is still a relative unknown to the younger generation and I think she be my favorite female singer of all time. They SHOULD KNOW. I 100% promise you will not be disappointed.

I wonder if Elizabeth has ever heard of Varttina (from Finland) they are a female fronted band, and difficult to describe, as their music ranges from aboriginal/traditional, to jazz, rock, folk, and just plain fancy dancy,
but all sung in ancient Finnish Karelian language. They truly use their voices as instruments and chop it up like guitar players rocking out.
I think she would fall in love with that band, as I did many years ago. FANTASTIC stuff 💖

Really, one more of her great performances, and it's really impressive how good Tina Turner could be when she was 70 - this show took place some 10 years ago and nowadays, as far as I know, she is retired.
She's done a lot to pop rock, music in a general way, she is one of the greatest singers - ever! - , so she's got the right to rest and enjoy her family.
Well, now I have to go put the headphones on, close my eyes, and sink solidly into my favorite version of this. Every time you do an artist I love - I have to listen to your analysis, and then I immediately play through and revisit why I do. This woman has seen it all, and brought a great many of us along with her.
I agree with the other posters in that Tina singing Proud Mary is another you should review. Her stage presence is amazing, and her voice simply commands you into whatever emotion she wishes.
It's crazy I just happened to catch this video on my way to a DJ a party with a set I'm kicking off with an older Tina song, Black Coffee (1972). Fabulous stuff!
