Things were far more creative back then, nobody sounded like one another, you had to be different and bring your own style or you were wack. There were a bunch of groups that were in the same lane as the pharcyde (a tribe called quest, de la soul. Digable planets, Pete Rock & C.L Smooth, etc etc) . This is what was on the radio at the time as well.

What you need to keep in mind is that hip hop was all underground back then as it didn’t really start selling major units until the late 90s/early 2000s. Today’s scene is preoccupied with selling units, merch, collecting views etc which has resulted in the most conservative period in hip hops history, where everyone is scared of taking risks, either stylistically or thematically.
