  • Learn to Muscle-Up. This is the ultimate Calisthenics skill. It took me three months of training before I did my first one. I was aged 55. This video is my journey.
    Now at the age of 59, I am getting stronger and fitter with age. I am able to perform multiple muscle-ups, and my form is still improving. I wouldn't call them strict muscle-ups, but the kipping of the legs is massively less than in this video. Please join, subscribe and support me in turning the clock backwards.

      Same, I gave up at 28 years old, it was so frustrating. I think the easiest way would be some kind of personal trainer, who can tell were your weakness is and what body part you have to work on. This video is quite an inspiration for going back to training.

    When I was 20 I could do 25 good pull ups . Injured my shoulder walking onl my hands so had a pain in my left shoulder most days . At 64 without training and 30 lbs heavier I did 3 chins . I saw a you tube that stated most shoulder pain can be resolved by dead hanging I tried it two months ago and the pain went. At 66 retired I have the time work on pull ups . I have installed a pull up bar on the wall and built a pyramid of platforms 6 inch levels from fully stretched out to my chest just above the bar. Using the pyramid I have done negative chins and dips to the floor starting at the lowest level . The lowering is now 15 seconds at the bottom so I’m progressing up the pyramid. My overall pull up strength is increasing rapidly now. Losing body weight also.

I went and bought an assist band yesterday and tried this morning. Even my trainer said it was hard, but he did one. So, I'm not going to quit, your video is great and has given me the motivation. Thanks, and keep up the great work.

      Bernard, great to hear you are able to do the prerequisites of 15 pull-ups. And being 64 in a few days times makes it even more special. You sound like you are in great shape. Buying the resistance bands gets you used to the feeling of flying upwards over bar. If you can crack the technique, ie , the swing, when to pull, etc, you’ve got this.. when you pull, pull as hard as you can and drive the knees upwards the bar at the same time. It will be a kipping muscle up, but they all count. Receiving comments like yours inspire me to want to make another video. The one you watched i made three years ago. I’ve improved a lot since then. Let me know how you get on.. excited for you.

      @@funwithcalisthenics 😅 Oh well... At least you have something cool to talk about and not just the usual corona/Ukraine/government crap that most guys your age keep on rambling about. My father in law does Kung Fu and works out as well. So once he's done with his political statements, the rest of the conversation is actually pretty enjoyable. With my dad, it's hard sometimes. I love him and all, but I'm really not motivated on visiting him often cuz I know it'll end up being a 1-2h monologue again where I already know 80% of the content by heart and the other 20% is just news about China, Russia or America. Even when times were more peaceful, he'd always Google out a random war somewhere that he can "keep on getting informed about". Don't get me wrong though. I agree with most of his opinions and I really don't have a high opinion about humanity and the direction this world is going. But as long as you are blessed to be able to lead a decent life on this planet where so many suffer, use that time for something smarter than to just Google how many people are suffering. You're neither helping yourself nor them by doing that. You who did a muscle up at your age surely inspired more people than all the other dads together with their boring government stories.

    • @funwithcalisthenics
      @funwithcalisthenics  11 месяцев назад +1

      Robert that was a great read. Being a dad myself with kids, I think you really nailed it. I’m also guilty of many things your dad does. Although in recent years I have probably become a little more approachable, and entertaining I guess. I didn’t visit my dad too often, and my kids don’t visit me that frequently. I think it’s a little to do with the crazy world we live in. Let’s leave it at that. Anyway, personally, I find having a hobby or interest like this really helps me mentally to deal with many things. People often say that about sports. Go easy on your dad, he probably loves you more than you’ll ever know.

    • @robertbogomolec8763
      @robertbogomolec8763 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@funwithcalisthenics Don't worry, I don't blame him for anything. I'm actually grateful to have a dad like him cuz he opened my eyes and my mind in many ways. I agree with him in many of his opinions, it just gets annoying when he keeps on talking about the same stuff instead of just realizing that I agree with him, that most people will never agree with him, that this world will still be f*cked up no matter how much we discuss it, and that he could do so much more with his time and energy instead of just watching ex-CIA agents talking about America's undercover plans and stuff like that. I'd love to go with him to the streetworkout park or just play a video game in coop mode. But he kinda stopped doing anything else than "keeping himself informed" and that's the biggest dad-move of them all and that's what makes me frustrated. Like you said, having hobbies helps a lot. The world doesn't really offer much positivity by default. So if you forget how to behave like a little kid and create your own childish positivity, you're pretty much stranded. That's why I don't mind still allowing myself to get excited about muscle ups, bike rides, video games, playing the guitar and stuff like that. I know that all-in-all it's just a bunch of stupid and meaningless activities, but at least it has a positive effect on me. My dad is a pretty intelligent person and thus suffers from the biggest demise of such people - he can't stop behaving less intelligent and can't allow himself to have some simpleminded fun. 😅

I started 10 months ago with 2 bands totalling 80kg and have gradually progressed to a single medium band of 25kg where i seem to have stagnated. How long did it take you and did you encounter any sticking points or was it smooth and steady progress all the way? Many thanks again for sharing your journey!

    • @funwithcalisthenics
      @funwithcalisthenics  3 года назад +8

      Hiya, thanks for commenting. Firstly, the progress you’ve made from 80kg in bands to 25kg is seriously impressive. I don’t think there are many 60 year olds that could claim that! It seemed like an I possible task for me, and although it was progressing and I was single minded it wasn’t easy. What you don’t see in my video, is that during the three months it took me, I also managed to lose about 1/2 stone in weight while working hard on my pull-ups. Immediately after completing this video I picked up a shoulder injury so I couldn’t progress and clean up the form. Know I have a minor elbow ache, hopefully I’ll be getting back to muscle-ups again soon.
      My recommendation is to watch loads of videos on the technique, and visualise performing it.
      Think .. explosive pull downs like you are slamming the hood of your car and pulling your knees up (kipping) at the same time. And come around the bar, in a curve.. whilst working hard on building your pull-up max. How many can you do?

      Thanks for the quick response! Yes, i have watched dozens of youtube videos and i know the theory behind a successful muscle-up, just seem to lack the explosive strength needed. I can do 12-14 pull-ups, probably 12 clean and at least 15 straight bar dips. Am now practicing chest-to-bar pull-ups to improve on explosiveness but it's a really slow process and i haven't seen any progress since reaching 25kg band around 2 months ago :(

    Great work, I will say this, the MUSCLE up done properly takes a long time to develop. By done properly I mean not swinging. Doing it like this is fine if thats what you want but personally I prefer the route of taking the months required to develop it as a true muscle up, powered strictly by muscle pull, not swing or kipping. Starting with the chest to bar pullup from a dead hang, moving to chest to waist, and finally muscle up. Yes it takes a long time and like all Calisthenics moves requires discipline and commitment but for me thats part of the reason for doing it. Its achievable by strengthening the back, bicep and forearms to the point they can pull you up sequentially using strength alone from almost a dead hang. Sure it takes much longer to achieve but the strength developed is transferrable to so many other skills.

    • @MultiMyNickName
      @MultiMyNickName 11 месяцев назад +1

      Totally understandable, I think everyone starts the same because its hard to accept the reality of Calisthenics which is quite simply, as you seem to know now as well, that its one day at a time to every skill. What seems like slow progress becomes constant progress and the results as the body gets stronger are amazing. Personally the first 8 months for me are the hardest, I think after that it gets easier to settle into a discipline of patience and accepting the time it takes to build the strength day by day. Im almost 50 now as well, but I love Calisthenics training and train 4 sessions a week every week, 2 push 2 pull. The results in ower and body development are far better than I ever achieved in a gym!@@funwithcalisthenics

    First of all, huge thumbs up for the dedication and hard work Sir! :) I really hope to have the same fitness level in this age in the future! :) On the other hand, I would suggest working on the basic pull up and chin up strength. I would recommend building up a strong foundationon those: at least 10-12 reps of pull ups per sets with perfect form, without kipping. Also you might find useful practising explosive pull ups. Then the muscle up should be a piece of cake. :) Keep up the great work! 🙏

    I remember my muscle up journey
    - The bands really helped me understand the position needed
    - You want to go up and over the bar not just straight up, aiming for your abdomen to be above the bar
    - I learned there's such a thing as an over-swing. You have to find the "sweet spot"
    - Being explosive! I found that I had to use more explosive energy than I thought
    - High pull ups will help and once again aim for the abdomen to be at bar height, but a muscle up is different technique as it's up and over the bar like a "C" shape
    - As you can over swing in the setup you can also over swing by how far you're shooting out to go above the bar it's a "sweet spot" on each.
