I think I took like months of regular 1 hour typing practice per day and went from 40wpm to 115wpm. Then I sort of maxed out at 115wpm. It's probably gonna take a long time to get to 150wpm.
I used to teach these all the time, and there are a few ways to do them faster and easier. 1: Get extremely explosive doing perfect form pullups. This is starting from a complete dead hang, and pulling all the way until your chest presses into the bar. If you cheat this, it's only going to take longer and you'll need to sacrifice somewhere else to make it happen, leading to a really ugly muscle up. You don't need to be able to do 20 regular ones this way, but being able to do a few with a lot of explosiveness is key. 2: When you've got the pull up section down and you're consistently getting to the top quickly and you start your attempts at transitioning to the dip, act as though directly above the bar there's a pane of glass. Try to smash the glass with your forehead. You've probably heard that your body tends to follow your head, and this is no exception. Use the momentum to bring your shoulders, then upper arms, then elbows over the bar. The dip is by a wide margin the easiest part, so to be honest I wouldn't even worry about it unless you're awful at them. 3. Less volume, more frequency. Doing fewer reps and sets per day, but doing it every day will get most people there way faster. People think you don't have enough time to recover, but with less workload per day, there's less to recover FROM. In addition, all exercises with complicated motions (bench press, squat, deadlift, clean and jerk, snatch, etc) are SKILLS as much as they are strength based. Muscle ups absolutely fit into this category. Skills in general improve faster the more often you practice them, rather than how much time you spend doing them per session. I sincerely hope this helps somebody!
I will try this out. Right now I can do about 17 consecutive pull-ups (not explosive). Update will follow of course, but be patient lol. EDIT: Just an update. I have done some muscle ups with elastics before corona, but have had to put it in a break since I don't own a pull up bar. I do have some dumbbells at home to train with tho so I can still train somewhat :) EDIT 2: Damn 8 months has passed. I have had my ups and downs with fitness, but you know what? I can do muscle ups! I still chicken wing (working on that) and I need some kip, but I can do a few now. If you're wondering how I did it, here's how. I actually followed a proper workout plan and paid attention to my diet (mostly cut down on alcohol haha). I put muscle ups on hold for a while, while training the whole body (including back and biceps), gained some muscle and tried a few days ago with success! So if I can do it, you can also.

This video was really inspirational to me. Ever since watching it I've wanted to be able to do muscle ups myself. I was beginning at a similar position to you, able to do 5 unassisted pull ups. I started in the summer and now at the beginning of December I managed my first 3 consecutive unassisted muscle ups. I've watched this video many times, and it gave me the drive to continue. One thing I would say to anyone else teaching themselves muscle ups is just to be careful of your elbows and tendons, because it's easy to injure yourself given all the accumulated shocks through the elbows. If you feel pain, stop and consult someone to make sure you're you're not going to cause yourself issues. I had this briefly but managed to ease back into training. Thanks again though to Mike for the inspiration to achieve this
In all fairness at least he's truthful. As opposed to a guy who looks like he just jumped out of Tekken being like OMGGG I DID 10 MUSCLE UPS FIIRRRSSSTTT TRYYYYY

I love that even though you have almost a million subs, probably make a bunch of money off of youtube, and have sponsorships, you don't have spotify premium.
it's pullups, not heavy lifting, i for example train in calisthenics everyday, and i have no problem, food is very important, and if i feel too tired or something, i take a day off, but i alter the workouts like, today heavy pullup workout and other stuff, tomorrow i do less pullups and i focus on legs or abs, whatever, you can't overtrain with bodyweight, it's an endurance and strength exercise, and endurance is build by working everyday, not 3 times a week
i was so proud of you when i saw you progressively get better. This exemplifies what dedication really is, I'm so proud of you. I genuinely felt happy for you as you progressed more and more throughout the video
That first muscle up, and his pure excited reaction had me tear up. So cool! That feeling of setting out to do something and seeing the results of your work!
Thank you very much for the video, you didn't show muscle ups, you showed patience and determination, you showed people that they have to be patient and determined to reach their goals. 🙏

I can't describe how inspirational this video has been to me. Today I was able to get my first unassisted muscle up, plus two more on top of that, after nearly 2 months of hard training in nasty British weather. After every training session, I would come home and watch this video. Seeing the joy on Mike's face as he reached the top of the fifth rep made me remember what I was training for. Fantastic video.
I just conquered the muscle up about a month ago! It took me a few months to learn, I first started with the kip-up and kept going then one day I just went for it and got it, then the next time it just got easier and easier. Practice makes perfect
This is very inspirational. More so than most of your videos (I like those too). But to see you train for 90 days just for a RUclips video, when a lot of us can't find the desire to do those first few pullups for our own personal gain really makes me want to try harder. Thank you
I am smiling out of joy coz i know how difficult it is and how great you feel once you finally able to do it. I am also on my journey to do my first pull up . I practice daily and I can feel getting stronger every day .
Wow man! Absolutely awesome. I doing a 100 pushups a day for 30 days. Next stop is muscle ups. Thanks for the motivation very few people on earth can actually do muscle ups.
You're a freaking inspiration. I'm 57 and have been on this journey, and I think it will take me longer than you did it in, but I am going persist after seeing your consistency and dedication to achieve this goal. I can do chin ups and almost a pull up, so I have a long way to go. I can lose 30-50 pounds to make it easier and myself lean and once I can do 6 pull ups, I will reward myself with getting a resistance band to help me on starting the muscle ups.
This video motivated and helped me so much in my muscle up progression. At first I couldn’t do one (3 weeks into training) and after watching this video and getting motivated I tried it until I got it on 7 weeks. The feet kicking up really made a big difference and was the key factor on how to learn muscle up fast! Hope this helps anyone else.
I can do 5 pull ups now and have challenged myself to do 1 muscle up in 30 days. I'm training everyday and your video helps heaps and its so motivational! Bet nothing feels better than achieving that first muscle up!
It took me personally 6 Months of training almost everyday to get from 2 pull ups to 2 muscle ups. Please do not rush!!! Learn to do clean 15-17 pull ups and 30 dips and than start learning muscle ups! It was mustake, I wasted A LOT of time on that
As someone on his way to do his first unassisted pullup (still got a long way to go, I'm 1.93m tall 87kg and need 50 kilos of support lol) but this is still extremely inspiring, it's all about that slow methodical progress, learning and adjusting every single time we try, thanks Mike!
I came back to watch this video since I started training for Calisthenics today, and I went to Kennington Park in London, and then I realised Mike is training IN THE SAME SPOT I was today. This is probably a sign for me to keep pushing and believing in myself. Thank you for this video!

EDIT: Just an update. I have done some muscle ups with elastics before corona, but have had to put it in a break since I don't own a pull up bar. I do have some dumbbells at home to train with tho so I can still train somewhat :)
EDIT 2: Damn 8 months has passed.
@@AwesomeSmiley87 cmon mate, i can do about 8 pull ups, im working my way to do it
Thx alot!!
I don't know why but for me it's easy af...
Edit: I work out probably once a week

Imagine how fast he would have been able to do one if he used full range of motion in his pull-ups
Or if he even used the correct technique to muscle up
Technique comes with practice.
He probably wasn't strong enough at the start and didnt want to go to the gym and use a lat pulldown or assisted pull up machine
@S its because we all lift and obviously know stuff about it
It is very easy when u can do pull-ups it is the triceps that are hard. For that I did some dips and was done. I can do 7

Its crazy how fast a person can actually start to get cut by just doing it and having the determination it shows we really can do anything we out our minds to
This video was really inspirational to me. Thanks again though to Mike for the inspiration to achieve this
Ye, vid is interesting to watch, but his program is too hasty, so the technique ends up being rough and dangerous
In all fairness at least he's truthful. As opposed to a guy who looks like he just jumped out of Tekken being like OMGGG I DID 10 MUSCLE UPS FIIRRRSSSTTT TRYYYYY

Thats just ignorant
that one learn ‘quick’ video that takes 93 days
you cannot develop strength faster than that
depends on the body, the did a total of 31 hours of training, over the course of 3 months, you can half that if you pump up the training everyday
ofc because the body hasn´t to rest....
it's pullups, not heavy lifting, i for example train in calisthenics everyday, and i have no problem, food is very important, and if i feel too tired or something, i take a day off, but i alter the workouts like, today heavy pullup workout and other stuff, tomorrow i do less pullups and i focus on legs or abs, whatever, you can't overtrain with bodyweight, it's an endurance and strength exercise, and endurance is build by working everyday, not 3 times a week
you need to buy resistance bands on day 1 :)
Mike Boyd: literally the only guy who has ever worked out in a button down shirt lol, great stuff though dude
a prole hey I do that all the time
i was so proud of you when i saw you progressively get better. This exemplifies what dedication really is, I'm so proud of you. I genuinely felt happy for you as you progressed more and more throughout the video

When resistance bands turns into assistance bands.. 😂
Using resistance bands to help build strength to do a pull up has been around for a long time....

It's a sign that he did his first muscle up on day 69😏
What a shit joke
Just because 69 is a sex position doesn’t mean that every thing that to do with that number is purposefully intended to be “sexual”. Grow up.

This video motivated and helped me so much in my muscle up progression. At first I couldn’t do one (3 weeks into training) and after watching this video and getting motivated I tried it until I got it on 7 weeks.
