The reason I explore far is too get some systems to my name. No one will even notice, but it feels like I am leaving something of myself in the game! :)
^^ This. I have a couple of "First Mapped" credits to my name, inside the bubble no less, but I want to find something in the game that no one has seen before. I'd love to get a "First Discovered" credit in E:D. The day that I find an unexplored system is going to be a looooooong day for me because I'll be mapping every single object in that system! 😁
I love exploration. I live for exploration. It's like this in my real life. I have always explored, first by motorcycle when I was young. I lived in the desert and would take extra gas/oil/survival gear and go as far as my dirt bike would take me, then when I was older I did the same thing in a built 4x4. Yes, I had crazy adventures including breakdowns in the middle of nowhere. Now that I am retired with health problems this gives me the ability to see what is over the next hill so to speak. This game gives me the tenuous experience of real space exploration. I have always wanted to explore space just to see what is there.
Aren't we lucky that we lived long enough that we could have simulations this good?! I mean growing up when games were so primitive as pac man (or worse!) - I DREAMED of things like this!!!
I had planned to go a max of a couple thousand light years from my home system. I am now over 5,000 light years away and won't be returning for a while. Videos like this one have helped inspire me to go as far as I can.
The people that don't understand exploration and it's appeal, are the same people that can't understand why someone would play an MMO alone most of the time... You did a great job explaining the appeal to Elite itself, not just exploring. It really is a 'do what ever the hell you want' type of game and that's what's great about it. And they'll just keep adding things I can add to the list of 'things I want to do'. I'm an astrophysicist, passionate about all physics, and Frontier did an amazing job. And there's no doubt that if I were rich, I would gladly double their staff to work on E: D alone. You know what? I now have a life goal...
Exploration is the best part of Elite! Everything is always different (minus the 1st 2/3rd of the jump animation). Combat: How many guns can you shoot at how many different ships? Measurable. Mining: How many rocks can you shoot? Measurable. Trade: How many products can you deliver to how many stations? Measurable Exploration: How many planets can you visit? NO ONE KNOWS! Less than 1% of all visitable starsystems have even been discovered!
Explorers and Content Creators like you were half of the reason I decided to become an explorer myself, just hit Elite yesterday and am posted up at Explorer's Anchorage for my trip around the outer arm!
I appreciate you putting my earlier comment in your video. Sometimes it's good to see how others can screw up so you can learn from their mistakes, so hopefully I'll show someone what NOT to do. I probably was looking away from my screen for no more than 20 seconds before my ship was exploding. Regarding what you were saying about why we explore, I have a little to add. Part of the reason is the pure joy of discovery. You're finding stars, planets and moons that have never been seen before. You're literally going where no one has gone before, seeking out new life (sound familiar? ) Another reason? Ego. For me at least this is a real reason. I'm putting my name on planets that, hopefully, many others will see. It's something that will last for as long as this game is running. I think I'm finally ready to get back to my voyage to Beagle Point. It'll take some time, but I do hope to see you there if you haven't moved on by the time I get there. Cheers, and safe traveling, Commander.
Great video, as always, Geist. Once again, thanks for taking us on this journey with you. I love your opinions on exploring, goals, and personal preference in Elite Dangerous so I'm glad someone asked so you could fill us in more on what keeps you exploring. We all have our own reasons for what keeps us going, whether it's in a game or real life.
I find your videos inspiring. I'm longing for the days where I have space legs to walk upon but for now my Xbox one and I will continue to explore without the benefits of legs after all I can still fly up the side of a mountain just like you did in this video. Thanks for sharing keep it up
Sorry SG, but I was chuckling as you tumbled down the side of the mountain. Because it reminded me of how many times I've done that! Going up a mountain is usually easy. Coming down is where the real adventure starts!
I made it to sag in like 2 days and I had barely started playing the game. I decided to go to Colonia and to return the the bubble, and play more of the game and if I'm still here in a few months I'll consider doing this challenge again.
I played the original Frontier game back in the 90’s and I spent months of game time traversing the galaxy. The map allowed you to look beyond the galaxy edge like scrolling, which took as long as actually travelling. When I finally got something else onto the map it was actually an exact copy of our galaxy. My mates pissed themselves over how much time I invested in this trip and search. Wasn’t sure I felt let down, surprised or joyous. I wanted to find out whether this duplication was actually by design or some random generation by the game itself. Wonder how many other early Frontierists made this journey too
As soon as I solo a Hydra I'm building a Phantom to fly to Beagle Point. Upon return I hope I'd have triple Elite and will go to Sol for the first time ever. Then I may sadly throw in my wings after a glorious career. Goals...
Geist meister, just a quick thank you for some great advice and really useful tips. I started playing Elite a few weeks ago. I'm now a couple hours from Sagittarius A. Would have never made it without the awesome videos that taught me so much.
Thanks for the warning on space madness in a previous video. I'm taking my slow boat to Colonia and I've found the unnecessary risk taking almost running away with me on planetary landings.
Huge thanks for not constantly bashing odyssey every chance you get - it makes all of your videos so much easier to watch when you don’t actively hate the game
My current goal is to find a glowing green gas giant in the Elysian Shore region. I will probably never find one, but it's exciting checking every new system I enter. It's like opening booster packs of trading cards
In late Dec. 2018, early Jan. 2019 I made my first trip to Colonia, then to Sag. A *, back to Colonia, back to Sol. I remember being able to plot a route of 20,000 LY at a time. Not long after I completed that trip, I discovered I could no long plot further than 5k LY and it's been that way (for me) ever since.
About exploration, after you honk then use the fss scanner , I then look at the system map and look at the info on each body but I really can't disciphor that info on whether I should actually go to a certain body. Yes, if a body has geological or biological life that im looking for I might go, but is there more important info in the system map that you use to make a decision? Thank you
I always want to go out there and find things, see things, and just try to find what's out there. That said, it's going to take me forever to get to Explorer's Anchorage since I'm going to want to honk and scan every system along the way.
Jumping in elite can either be the most boring thing or the most intense thing; I jumped out on a white dwarf and went through its jets before stopping just outside of them once
You know... I tried mining, and it was OK, I might go back and do that some more some time. Dabbled with combat, but that'll take a ton more practice flying to become proficient, fun though. But exploration has really got me. I'm not really even a video game kinda guy, but I've got close to 200 hours in ED doing this. That's a lot for me. I had been trying to get the guardian FSD booster... long story, but I blew up my SRV in the process. And I sat in orbit contemplating whether I should go get another SRV, or... "ah, fuck it - I've got 50ly jumps, and spatula goose is doing this with 35. I'm heading out." Picked a start at the limit of my single-jump range towards galactic center and haven't looked back. Why do I do this? This is all just a game, for christ's sake. But really, isn't all of life just a game? Yeesh. Did I just say that? Whatever. I do it. I might find something cool. I like to put on some stoner-psych-doom and fly around the rings of some unknown and never-seen gas giant. Or doing a high-altitude pass over some planet, looking for something unusual to check out. No, it's not real. But it's real enough for me. (Head tracker added a lot to this) Totally hooked on your ED exploration videos. More more more. Please.
To me exploration is to find something new, unique, and or different/strange few of my finds range from 13g ammonia world, a 10+ water world few other high gravity we can’t land on yet, one day maybe. A binary pair of Wolf-Rayet stars with a super giant star that orbits them. Why I explore in elite to find something different or crazy.
Also, I've never climbed a mountain, but if you must know, I'm attempting to toast a marshmelon. Probably followed by a stirring rendition of "row row your boat" led by a cantankerous southern doctor.
Didn’t somebody find Raxxla? I heard it’s a system and not a planet where you type in a certain code while in hyper jump and you’ll emergency stop and drop into the Raxxla system. This is what I heard anyways
My primary long range exploration vessel is the Asp Explorer. Diamondback Explorer, Krait Phantom, and the Anaconda are also excellent choices. The Hauler is the best budget choice.
I explore for the same reason I liked finding fossils. When you find a fossil, you are the first human being to ever set eyes on the remains of that creature. It is true discovery in its purest form, at least that I can ever hope to do. When I survey an undiscovered system, I like the notion that I am the first human to discover the planets therein, first to map them, and now the first to set foot on them and first to discover any life on them. Bring on earthlikes, ammonia worlds, water worlds please FDEV....
I just started playing Elite and I'm thinking of following the BSG path (through the Helix and Orion nebulas, and then straight out from there ~2000LY). Am I in for anything interesting?
Hey. What is this pop-up menu with gamepad sticker and things like map, supercruise etc? Is it some kind of special controller function or program? I wish i had this on my PS4 controller.
Is your intro a whole song and can I find it somewhere? I have tried to use shazam but it gets a different result every time... (on one of the outros without voiceover)
You are aware that several hundred of us are going to memorize that star address and try to find it right... A permit locked system on the far side of the galactic core...
The whole nebula is permit locked. There are many permit locked zones, especially nebulae, all over the place in case F-Dev needs a spot to release new content. I find it annoying.
Would you mind showing us your controller settings? I cant find settings that are comfortable for me. Was playing on m&k untill now. Thank you very much.
He uses a HOTAS setup I believe. Quite a few cmdrs use them, and almost everyone has things set up differently. It's all about finding what works for you in your keybindings and running with it. I personally use a Xbox controller with almost entirely custom keybinds due to some motor control issues with my left hand.
IMO I can't imagine finding exploration in Elite interesting unless you're able to read what all the numbers and stats mean on planets and stars. That gasp when you drove off the mountain is the exact moment when space madness goes away and your ready to continue on your journey
8:25 “a primordial soup if you will, don’t mind if I drive over you”. That made me laugh harder than it should have.

Similar to how I got into exploring, grabbed a DBX, and set off to do my 5kly for unlocking professor Palin, 28kly later I remembered why I set out.
I was the very first commander to enter Explorer's Anchorage within the very first minutes of it coming into existence.
Wow, that’s very impressive! Must’ve given you some sick bragging rights haha
Nice! Congrats!

I just checked. 3 years ago Frontier Development has provided an exact figure of the metric: 0.028%. There are still some places to discover :-)
@@krzysztof_jablonski FDev's Zac and !Bruce said it on stream a few weeks ago. Was something like 0.4% now, which is a huge jump in 3 years.
It is 2022 and 0.05% of the galaxy has been explored. Approx ~40k years to go for 100% if we continue at this rate.
@@Tooterbooter Its 2024 and FDev says that we're up to 0.07% now.

The rock: Sorry no
Did the exact same thing recently. You can't damn plot because of the huge chunk of permit locked stars and I had to go under it. I smell Raxxla...
"Alright Raxxla where the hell are you" XD
Permit locked in a nebula it seems...

It really annoys me that you can't filter the galaxy map to systems where you have something in it flagged with your name on it.
After watching your videos I have made the decision to land on all planets with huge creators and jumping over the edge.
Uncut, unedited 40 hour version with you talking to yourself when?

I can't believe I completely missed that
The RC shits itself a lot since Odyssey for me.
Has anyone tried to travel outside the Galaxy… or at least to the very, very edge?
Every ship has 20.000ly range. Out of that the system can't plote the route. Knowing that i easy plote 360 jumps from the first time.
There’s a lot to be said (and saved) for having super cruise assist 🙄
