Wow. Marcelo is the GOAT. I would never have thought of the escape at 1.03. Opponent has the kimura grip. Just as he was about to put his leg over Marcelo's body in order to do the armbar, Marcelo pushed that leg with his leg, causing the opponent to lose balance and has to post using his left hand and releasing the kimura grip. What a legend.

This move is more than just sitting up. Marcello's timing and his ability to exploit the slightest bit of space given to him is ridiculous. He makes it look easy.

Awesome video. Truly, I noticed how important the right arm is in escaping from this side control (leverage push placed on the neck of the opponent). My challenge is in my judo training when I get pinned on kesa gatame and my right arm is out of the equation. It'd be awesome if Sensei Marcelo could showcase a video on this specific type of escape that is applicable for both BJJ and judo. Thanks!

Clearly there is something that I’m missing because it looks like he’s just posting up on one arm and stiff arming while sitting up? I want to make this work but I feel like I’m missing a bunch

    This escape uses strengh?
Can you do it if your opponent is 120 pounds heavier than you?

I think this escape uses mostly your abs and a bit of your triceps since I see him grab his opponent's back-colar then stiff-arm it when he sits up. But before you do the escape, you have to swing your leg up, then explosively down so your upper body can follow up its momentum.
If someone is heavier than you, let's say 25% heavier, I think another escape is more effective. But I am not sure, just speculating.

It's a matter of timing. You shouldn't allow your opponent to place all their weight on top of you, especially around your chest and head.. If you notice MG, he rarely allows a person to settle their weight on top of him. And if they do, he keeps their weight on his hips.

Exactly! just like he said, MG doesn't allow people to settle in on a position. this is more difficult if the guy has you pinned down, for sure. if that were the case you'd probably have to shrimp and attempt some other stuff first to get him moving (MG does this a lot if you watch. just in general really, he plays with your base and gets you moving). however ideally you'd never let the person settle in the first place. he does this right in the middle of the pass when the person moves. it's all about timing and sensitivity.
as far as the technique goes i'm not so sure the legs going up and down to create momentum is the most important part. that might be a part of it in the initial sitting up part, but more importantly it's the shrimping and the way his arm creates a wedge between him and the opponent. the wedge does something very important; it pushes their neck and head away. this is super important because where your head points, your body follows. doing this puts the guy down off his upper body and some shrimping and the legs up and down with the abs thing mixed (depends on how he needs to move at that particular time) help him sit up. next it's all shrimping from there. once he's up and has that post he just butt scoots backwards (keeping the wedge) and blam, back to guard.

that being said, this would be a great escape to do on bigger guys (as long as you didn't let them settle). marcelo's style in particular is very good for a smaller opponent vs. a larger one. i personally recommend all short legged smaller guys to watch marcelo and learn to roll and flow like him. i've seen 140Ib people escape guard passes from 350Ib people with stuff like this. they KEY is never letting them settle.
