Been watching and loving sumo since 2016. I am 76 and my sumo buddy was 65. We first saw a vid of an interview with Yokazuna HAKUHO. We were intrigued; started watching videos on RUclips and NHK World TV's GRAND SUMO HIGHLIGHTS during tournaments. We were instantly hooked (as are most people who are exposed to this great sport). Sumo has so many levels of interest past the wrestling: spiritual ceremonies, traditions of the different clothing, 82 wrestling techniques, the new names rikishi get and the whole history of sumo which is ancient. Sumo naturally becomes an addiction. Enjoy the journey.
Some years ago, there was a official sumo basho in Vancouver, all the top rishi were there, including Akebono. Everything was just as would have been done in Japan, including the proper clay, straw and other materials, all flown in in advance. I attended the first day, and it was packed with Japanese flown in on charter flights just for the occasion, there was no English spoken and virtually no English signs... As you approached the venue, there were all sorts of flags flying and the sound of the particular drum to call in the crowds on the tannoy... The whole day was spectacular and completely immersive in Japanese culture.... Amazing
I think I added something to my bucket list. I knew there was more to sumo than meets the eye. But this is fascinating! The culture of the sport and how people love it.
A small warning, the majority of sumo is boring tradition and long winded talks, a match can take dozens of minutes to start. Most of what we see on tv is purely highlights and severely trimmed down. Basically 90% of watching sumo is sitting there and waiting for matches. Edit: not to say the tradition isn’t interesting but watching it over and over gets old, and it gets old quick.
@@jlim003 When did I say leave Sumo to the Japanese?... The most successful sumo of all time is Mongolian not Japanese, no one stopped him from doing that. There is also no one stopping an organisation from outside Japan setting up a professional Sumo League, but no body does because they don't want to. Fascinating sport and cultural tradition. Sumos are athletes more like skilled strategists than just relying on brute force or strength. They must be disciplined and mindful of their art and skill. All honorable and respectful of the discipline. Amazing.

A lot of people think they have regular “fat people” fat. Almost all of a sumo’s fat is subcutaneous, or stored under their skin. Of course this isn’t very healthy but “regular” fat people have a lot of fat stored in their organs as well.
tks a lot for posting. Its helps a lot all the person like me, who has interesting on knowing a little bit more about this milenar art. Im from Brazil.
1) Who knew Sir Paul Mcartney is a Sumo fan. Wow 2) How big is Sumo wrestling in Japan these days? Is it a growing or dieing out?? From watching this video it is steeped in culture and tradition and rituals.
A lot of respect for these people, they're more flexible than I am and I'm a twig lol. The anime Hinomaru sumo got me more interested in them, I recommend watching it.
becoming a yokozuna sounds like its more trouble than its worth. not only you should be the best in our sport which should be more than enough, but a council still has to decide if you're "worthy" to be one, and you also need to publicly swear to be a good boi.
Because, innovation has diminishing returns. Everyone expects things to advance when we hit a wall a while ago and now things are destined to level out and repeat.
If a rikishi doesnt have the correct character to be a yokozuna, then how was he allowed to be a wrestler in the first place? Sounds like a contradiction.
From what I read the place in the trenches for a sumo to succeed is most likely a situational nose tackle or a mauler type guard. They wouldn't be able to get sacks or halt pass rushers, but they can eat up a ton of blockers and double teams. (If they don't get called for holding)
Yeah grabbing the neck like that and pushing up is called attempted murder in the USA. Also I recently played through all of the Famicon and Super Famicon Sumo games (theirs a lot) Its interesting to note that sumo is very hard to get right right in video game form. None of the games I played were any good, and most of them had very clunky controls. I wonder if someone finally made a good Sumo video game?
Basically chanko nabe is chicken stew. But it is usually more than broth, chicken and vegetables. It can contain scrambled egg, tofu chunks and many different kinds of veggies. Most sumo wrestlers join between the ages of 15-19 and retire somewhere between 30-35. Very few remain after 35. No not just that soup, they eat tons of rice with it. They also eat other stuff, anything that helps them gain muscle and fat.
Some retired rikishes stay in sumo as coaches, judges or commenters. Others do various things....become restaurant owners, truck drivers, etc. The wealthy Yokazunas who don't stay in sumo become philanthropists and business men. Life expectancy for a sumo rikishi is usually shorter than the average. When they go out of the stable to enjoy a night on the town they eat anything they want. A lot of beer is also consumed and is allowed in their training diet.
They're stoic, disciplined, and graceful all at the same time! There's so Much beauty and culture here.
