Grimes pushes her talents 'really hard'

  • She's only 24, but already releasing her third album Visions: Claire Boucher a.k.a. Grimes. With a sense of irony, the Canadian musician admits that she's 'pretty good at faking'. She says she doesn't know that much about music at all. "I just push the things I'm naturally good at really hard, but if I would play as a back-up musician in someone else's band, I would totally fuck it up for everybody."

People keep saying "she can't sing" when it hardly matters. First of all, her voice IS pleasant, and second of all, it's clearly more about the artistry/creativity for her than for expressing her talents. Art can be used as a medium for expression, and in many cases technical competence (especially when it's not accompanied by creativity/originality) can only get you so far...

Exactly! If only vocal sounds mattered in music what would be the point in instruments? I am a classically trained flautist, and learning an instrument is just as hard as it is putting together different sounds to make one song. Kind of like an orchestra. I agree I don't think she has the best voice in the world, but I think her music is very well thought out and she clearly has a talent.

It's really cool for me to watch this video right now. I feel like recently I've come to the same realization that she had: "anyone could do this". That is, whereas before I was conditioned to view music and art as something that other, more talented people did, now I'm realizing that one of the really cool things about music is that anyone can take part. Becoming a well-recieved popular artist is more challenging of course, but creating art is its own reward, and its best to focus on that.

Man....the Oblivion video(and song) is just excellent! Seeing that video in the spring of 2013 was my introduction to her genius.
I love her personal aesthetic....it's _so_ specific, yet so incredibly diverse and eclectic. She seems to curate a visual/sonic universe from whatever happens to be in her environment at that moment...and somehow makes it all cohesive and sensible.
I love how whimsical and free her creative process is. She doesn't overthink shit...she just goes for what feels right. And it works.

She's one of my many inspirations, definitely one of the most influential. The Nightmusic song & video inspired me to do some art (computer edited photography) it was really witchy and ethereal, kinda dark, mystical and reminded me of ancient druids in a forest. Other inspirations include FKA twigs, Fever Ray, Björk, Jónsi, Dawn Richard, Alice Glass, Purity Ring, Crystal Castles, Brooke Candy, Charli XCX etc. I think this is the most disdain I've ever had for mainstream music & I'm very thankful for lesser known, underground, alt artists, mainly in the alternative / EDM / art-pop genre, that are finally starting to gain the recognition they deserve.

Do you think selena gomez, Arianna grande, taylor swift actually make their own music? the buy those beats from someone and all their voices are autotuned.. not saying grimes is doing that but she could be just a figure head. by anyone can do this she might mean anybody can have others make music for you and that anyone can do.

The whole essence of music is the creative aspects of it. Any logic behind music discredits the emotion, creativity, and passion. Art should cease to be technical, we leave that for the robots, we shall aim to celebrate the spirit/emotion/god aspect within us all to experience art!

love her, shes being honest and not trying to fool herself. The music is simplistic at best, with lots of layers, and not really very good but if people like it thats all that counts, shes creating art and thats something subjective, getting as many fans as she has shows people like what shes doing. I just wish these people would also listen to some well crafted music, Seems every generation of listeners seems to be going backwards. In terms of being a singer lets call a spade a spade she is terrible but all the reverb creates something pleasant and angelic. There is an old saying in the biz about reverb units, it goes can you dial me in some more talent... enuff said she is an artist and striving for that and thats good enough for me.

At the end of the day it is all about good songs for me. I don't really care about the method because I am not some jealous/jaded/failed musician or some music snob. She puts a lot emotion and creativity into her music and if you cant tell than that sucks for you. +Chris Rudolph I completely agree with you and Random Username. The girl's having fun, so let her do what she does 'cause it's good. Basically every review on "Art Angels" mentions how simple the record sounds at first, but if you listen to it for multiple times, you can actually hear a whole universe of various sounds. That's Grimes's trick - her songs seem to be rather uncomplicated because of their structure and easily remembered melodies and choruses (definition of what exactly is a chorus in the majority of her songs is also another matter to discuss), but once you give them a profound listen, you begin to see the complexity of her work, plus no one should ever ignore her other talents. Besides, I don't even recall her ever saying "I'm a good musician/singer/artist/illustrator", like, she knows it herself she's not the best, allright. Her music isn't even suited or designed to be liked by everybody.
