A sail works essentially like an upright wing. This means that, if angled just right, it provides "lift" in the direction the ship is travelling. As a result, you don't actually travel fastest with the wind at your back, but at roughly 90 degrees off the side. It will come paired with some lean, but generally keeled ships are built to handle pretty hefty crosswinds without capsizing. In fact, most of the time, eventually the ship's hull will obscure enough of the sail that it no longer catches enough wind to keep tipping over. That means most ships are perfectly fine with a list of 45 degrees or more, depending on the type - any threat comes more from scooping up water rather than a potential capsize. It also means you're not using as much of the wind any more to move you forward, however, so you'll still want to try to limit how much list you're getting. How do you limit your list without turning away from that juicy juicy perfect wind direction? Simple: shift weight around. On the open seas especially, wind directions are pretty constant, so you just lock down the wheel to keep you at a constant bearing, and start moving cargo & people around and you'll be an ocean away before you know it.
So to optimize sailing speed, if you want to go north and the wind is also going north, you want to position your sails along either the SW-NE axis or the NW-SE axis?
@@bojackhorseman4176 When the wind is coming from the South and heading towards North, you'll get best speeds when sailing roughly between East and Southeast; or between West and Southwest. You're essentially sailing slightly upwind. There's minor differences based on what type of sail you're using - and this principle doesn't apply to square sails - but that's generally your angles. You would angle your sails so that the leading edge is more or less in line with the wind direction, so along the N-S axis. If you're unsure, there's a sailing manual in-game that shows a little picture of roughly how you want your sails depending on where the wind's coming from. It's not super accurate but a great little reminder.
Spoilers below: Not a mean comment, but for anyone playing Sailwind and maybe this makes it back to Tamto our Lord and Savior himself. Look up some Chronocompass tutorials, its not a real instrument but it is 100% real and functional for Sailwind if you understand it. Tomato slept passed happy bay traveling directly east, by like maybe being 15km northward over happy bay and completely overshot off the map with such a strong favorable easterly wind. Its also why he should have gone east first, then NE then N although that absolutely would've been a 10 or 12 hour stream of misery and Opissydeus references.
8 hours of pure unfiltered kino of a fruit trying his best to sail the seas. His life's purpose trying to reach the promised land known as Happy Bay as the gods subject him to their whimsy and folly.
It takes youtube a long time to encode longer videos. They could be up earlier, but they'd be limited to the shitty low res options for a long time. Tomato waits until the video is fully processed before publishing them.
For the sake of the Pit’s integrity, please refrain from the mention of real life politics. I was here, many ages ago, when the Great Red One came and disabled the comments as punishment for our sins. I wish not to relive such dark times.

The atmosphere and challenge in this game are so excellent and unique, plus it's perfect for streaming. I love this one.
The pit has flooded. Abandon all hope until the great drainage can finally commence.
The drainage follows directly into Urge, which then turns into Sailwind, which ends into an infinite loop.
Now I have something to watch while I play Sailwind
Watching him believe Poseidon was with him as Poseidon pushed him past the island was great
