Inevitably some boomer is gonna comment "stop talking and just play" but I really appreciate hearing your actual experience with an instrument. There's much more to how and why we use gear than just sound, I wish people would understand that.
Thank you. I put chapters so people can skip to the playing if they want to, and I was worried that I was talking too much in this video but I'm glad to hear that you like the insights.
Squier's 4001 he primarily played through the neck pickup as his bridge pickup was faulty, played through a 1960's Marshall bass head. Additionally he had the bass sanded down quit a bit due to repainting and even had floral wallpaper on it, significantly reducing to body weight which affects the tone, I did something similar in the early 1990's with a burgundy finish 1974 4001 (deeply regret in hindsight) and got really close tonaly. I find with a maple neck fender jazz I can get closer to that 'roundabout' tone with some good steel strings, either rotosounds or IT'S. Eq it a bit through my svt and I'm there.
I dig your taste man! Great explanations, examples, and playing. I completely agree about the Rick and VT Bass DI, I will not play a rick without one. That pedal just instantly Livens up the sound of a Rickenbacker and gives you the sound these basses are known for. I also had a Bongo and loved it for the most part but it did have that "too many controls" effect to it, you spend more time twiddling the knobs to get a "perfect tone" when other 3 or two band eq basses are much simpler to just plug in and get a tone that works. I'm more of a Spector guy these days. Also got to say you have a great speaking voice haha not to sound weird 😆.
Took the words right out of my mouth haha. Definitely agree about the Bongo; I generally keep the knobs flat and just do all the tone shaping on my VT Bass DI.
I've had two Zon Sonus's - a Sonus V & a Sonus Special IV that I bought at Bass Northwest in Seattle. I now have the Modulus VJ (jazz bass) with the composite neck, Chechen fingerboard & EMG active pickups & preamp. I use it with a SansAmp DP-3X (Dug Pinnick pedal) & it is incredible. The neck is so nice & smooth on the Modulus. If I could have any bass right now it would be the Zon Sonus Billy Gould model. Great video & Cheers!
Interesting. How do you find the neck width on the Modulus vs the Sonus? One thing I didn't mention in the video is that the neck on the Zon is a little wide for my preference; I prefer narrower like on a Jazz bass.
Great comparison! The Zon does sound amazing!!!

Good demo and your indepth knowledge n favour of your gears!
EMG 40DC on the zon?
I don't believe so,. As I recall, these are actually the Jazz-style EMGs that are encased within the soapbar casings.
That's a loads of In Absentia there, thanks but you didn't help - just makes the Zon GAS even worse.
